Manchin: Hey, let’s delay all ObamaCare enforcement for a year

posted at 2:01 pm on December 22, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Alternate headline: Hey, maybe those Republicans had a point in September, huh? Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) tells Candy Crowley on CNN’s State of the Union that Democrats and Republicans should come together to approve a one-year delay in any enforcement of the individual mandate in ObamaCare, considering the facts that (a) people can’t enroll through the government websites yet, and (b) the latest (illegal) change from the White House has more or less meant a de facto delay anyway. Why not make it official at this point, and see what happens?

“If it’s so much more expensive than what we anticipated and if the coverage is not as good as what we had, you’ve got a complete meltdown at that time,” the West Virginia Democrat said in an interview that aired Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “This transitional year gives you a chance to adjust the product for the market.”

Here’s the problem with that approach, and also with the latest change from HHS and the Obama administration.  This year’s premium prices were predicated on forcing everyone to buy comprehensive policies, even those who don’t really need them. Not only did Thursday’s change remove the moral argument that non-comprehensive plans are inadequate under all circumstances, it also gave millions of Americans a free get-out-of-comprehensive-insurance-jail-free card. Delaying the mandate will mean that insurance companies will be forced to escalate premiums even more sharply in the fall of 2014 for the 2015 year, and the dynamic that Manchin describes will be even worse than it is now.

ObamaCare is already collapsing under the weight of its own mandates, as anyone who understands risk pools predicted when the bill was being debated. The web-portal issues are just the icing on the cake.

Come together and delay the Individual Mandate for…a year?

How about in a year we repeal the entire government takeover mess you help create Joe? That would be when Republicans finally reclaim Harry Reid’s personal dictatorship- which was once called the U.S. Senate.

Then we can replace it with common sense reforms in the private system, which prior to Obamacare was the best in the entire world?

By the way, help me understand how Manchin has consistently voted against the entire Obama agenda that has systemically destroyed our entire country….crickets.

Marcus Traianus on December 22, 2013 at 2:11 PM

Sorry, Joe, the Senate Majority Leader you voted for won’t let it come up for a vote, and the President you campaigned for will veto it. But please, keep telling us how “independent” you are… we’re riveted.

Death Toll.

Pythagoras on December 22, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Looking at the numbers we have about a million signed up for ocare or privately with pre-existing conditions, a million on to medicaid, 6 million cancelled but many have found private plans so Mr._resident where are the 30 million you destroyed our healthcare system for?

tim c on December 22, 2013 at 2:57 PM

Delay? What Joe, just long enough to get last the elections? Delay won’t improve Obamacare. It’s a bad piece of legislation. The only option us repeal.

Charlemagne on December 22, 2013 at 3:00 PM

I think it’s pretty obvious that not nearly enough people will sign up for Obamacare. What happens then? What happens to the health insurance industry? Do we just end up going back to the way things were? Will there be some obscure section of Obamacare that will be repealed without any fanfare that will bring it down? Obviously something will have to happen when 60+ million people don’t have health insurance.

Capitalist Infidel on December 22, 2013 at 3:05 PM

Too little, too late.

A delay of the mandate ENSURES it will “collapse of its own weight” in cost overruns. The mandate is what – in their flawed theory – forces young healthy people to pay double or more in premiums to cover benefits for the older and sicker, the subsidies for the lower incomes, and the benefits for the million new Medicaid freeloaders. Without that premium income, there is no revenue to pay billions and billions of benefits and tax credits.

Insurers will bleed red ink – that the federal government had to promise to cover for three years in order to entice them to offer plans through the exchanges – and not only does this blow up the deficit and need congressional funding, but it also guarantees the next year’s premiums will be even higher, making it even less likely the healthy will sign up.

Sorry, Joe, you can’t fix this turkey. It came pre-baked.

WV, you got what you paid for: Lying Nothinburger Joe Manchin.

Joe, the GOP offered a chance for your socialist cadre to delay this nightmare, and you opted otherwise. You own it, and it can burn to the ground and leave every Democrat in the ash heap.

This was all part of the plan: Collapse the healthcare system and implement single-payer so we are all dependent on Big Government.

Maybe Joe will get a new shotgun for Christmas and he will shoot the Obamacare bill to prove that he really hates it. And idiot voters yet again will fall for that act.

Philly on December 22, 2013 at 4:07 PM

“This transitional year gives you a chance to adjust the product for the market.”

Joe, the product for the market is socialism, not health care. The Dems problem is that even your own voters aren’t falling for the lies any more because they found out it was all about income confiscation and redistribution. Yeah, Democrats are clueless and it took some time for them to get the sick joke.

The web site is another failed attraction in this three-ring circus. Your clown car is riding on rims.

Philly on December 22, 2013 at 4:12 PM

This cannot be un-done. And bear in mid the fact that these insurers are regulated by the States not the Feds. Obama sought to destroy the US Health Care system and he got what he wanted..

I hope he gets swallowed up by a volcano.

Did anyone ask this retard what, exactly, the above means?

“It falls under its own weight if the cost becomes more than we can absorb.”

Did anyone ask this imbecile where the cost that becomes more than we can absorb goes?

These are just two, count them — two, trivial, insignificant reasons, why everyone in DC ought to taken to Guam and made to stand on it’s edge until it tips over into the sea, IYKWIMAITYD. Don’t even get me started on the big reasons.

AshleyTKing on December 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

I think the best thing that could happen to sink this once and for all is for the House to not allow this thing to be delayed. Let it collapse under its own weight. We shouldn’t do anything before the elections.

COgirl on December 22, 2013 at 5:01 PM

Manchin was formerly a governor (an executiv) and couldn’t foresee the flaws in the whole bill? And doesn’t understand the vacousness of his “solution”? Not too brilliant.

What about all those folks who have lost insurance, and cannot now get any? Effective January 01, we have millions of folks who got cancelled: what happens to them?

An even better idea, Joe, is to delay it forever.

Joe Mahchin wavers back and forth between sanity and his wobbly, Liberal self. To say he is confused is an understatement. However, it appears that the folks in WV appear to like it that way.

virgo on December 23, 2013 at 3:10 AM

Everyone LOVES the idea of DELAYING Obamacare….but no one wants to even mention getting rid of this nation-destroying ‘Liberal Nightmare’. WHY is that?

o Obamacare was the 1st bill based on nothing but lies and a Liberal agenda, rammed down the throats of a majority of Americans who opposed it.

o Obama KNEW millions of Americans would lose their jobs and health insurance as a result of the law being passed before he waged his ‘LIE’ campaign and rammed it through.

o Obama had to include in the law a ‘punishment tax’ for the sole purpose of FORCING Americans to comply.

o Obamacare is the 1st LAW ever accompanied by a multi-BILLION dollar ad campaign after it had passed to make the law ‘popular’ & encourage Americans to comply…even though it is a LAW and carries a FINE if people don’t comply.

o The Law is SO HORRIBLE that Obama began ILLEGALLY changing it not long after he signed it. To date Obama has made over 2,200 UN-CONSTITUTIONAL waivers and changes to the law by by-passing Congress to make them…because he is DESPERATE to keep his Liberal Nightmare and march to ‘Single Payer’ alive.

o The law has resulted in even upper Middle Class families being labeled ‘Hardship Cases’ because they can’t afford the higher premiums (that come with lower/fewer health care benefits). It has / is DESTROYING the Middle Class.

o Doctors are opting out while simultaneously Obamacare excludes many doctors, hospitals, and health care facilities – You can’t keep your health care & you can’t keep your doctor, either.

o It is adding a massive number of new patients onto an already overcrowded medicaid program that was already in jeopardy of financial collapse.

So Rep Manchin, why is POSTPONING this pain, nation-destroying, job losing, insurance dropping, Middle Class killing, Socialized Obama agenda-driven Nightmare such an appealing option to you rather than REPEALING / KILLING IT?

Let’s be honest for a minute…OBAMACARE DOESN’T EVEN EXIST ANYMORE! It’s already GONE! Thanks to over 2,250 CONSTITUTIONAL VIOLATIONS made by a Socialist, dictator-wanna-be in an attempt to keep this nation-destroying LIE alive by by-passing Congress every time, Obamacare – as originally passed – doesn’t even exist anymore.

Obamacare has, and continues to be, a mutating, gangrenously-spreading Socialist ‘CANCER’ that is destroying the ‘patient’ – America!
