Quotes of the day

posted at 8:31 pm on December 20, 2013 by Allahpundit

Duck Dynasty could very well be done.

Sources connected to the hit A&E show, and the Robertson clan, tell E! News that the family is “very serious” about leaving the reality series, after the network suspended patriarch Phil Robertson for his GQ interview, in which he grouped homosexuality in with bestiality as deviant behavior.

“They’re an extremely tight-knit family and they’re not going to let this get in the way,” a source connected to the family explains. “[Phil] is the reason for their success—they’re not going to abandon him. They’re also not about to let anyone threaten their religious beliefs.”

***

Now, I don’t agree with Robertson’s take on homosexuality. Heck, I don’t even like duck hunting. But I also don’t care. What I object to is the insinuation that I have to.

And what I find absolutely ridiculous is the feigned shock that an avatar of the redneck renaissance might actually have politically incorrect or just plain religiously orthodox views on homosexuality. Seriously, who called for the fainting couch when they read his interview in GQ?

Duck Dynasty has been a huge ratings success, receiving fawning coverage from the elite media. Much of the coverage has also been incredibly condescending, like aristocrats in Victorian London having a grand time inviting a Zulu tribesman to dinner. Everyone says, “Look at the funny rednecks,” until Robertson says something that you would absolutely expect to hear from a guy who plays a redneck on TV. Then suddenly everyone is scandalized? Please. Isn’t the whole point of these shows to demonstrate that there are lots of different kinds of people out there? Isn’t that a good thing?

***

But no matter how nice you are, it’s never enough. Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson, in his career-detonating interview with GQ, gave a rather thoughtful vernacular exegesis of the Bible’s line on sin, while carefully insisting that he and other Christians are obligated to love all sinners and leave it to the Almighty to adjudicate the competing charms of drunkards, fornicators, and homosexuals. Nevertheless, GLAAD — “the gatekeepers of politically correct gayness” as the (gay) novelist Bret Easton Ellis sneered — saw their opportunity and seized it. By taking out TV’s leading cable star, they would teach an important lesson pour encourager les autres — that espousing conventional Christian morality, even off-air, is incompatible with American celebrity.

Some of my comrades, who really should know better, wonder why, instead of insisting Robertson be defenestrated, GLAAD wouldn’t rather “start a conversation.” But, if you don’t need to, why bother? Most Christian opponents of gay marriage oppose gay marriage; they don’t oppose the right of gays to advocate it. Yet thug groups like GLAAD increasingly oppose the right of Christians even to argue their corner. It’s quicker and more effective to silence them.

As Christian bakers ordered to provide wedding cakes for gay nuptials and many others well understand, America’s much-vaunted “freedom of religion” is dwindling down to something you can exercise behind closed doors in the privacy of your own abode or at a specialist venue for those of such tastes for an hour or so on Sunday morning, but when you enter the public square you have to leave your faith back home hanging in the closet. Yet even this reductive consolation is not permitted to Robertson: GLAAD spokesgay Wilson Cruz declared that “Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe.” Robertson was quoting the New Testament, but hey, what do those guys know? In today’s America, land of the Obamacare Pajama Boy, Jesus is basically Nightshirt Boy, a fey non-judgmental dweeb who’s cool with whatever. What GLAAD is attempting would be called, were it applied to any other identity group, “cultural appropriation.”

In the broader sense, it’s totalitarian.

***

In the 1960s, radical philosopher Herbert Marcuse popularized the “repressive tolerance” theory of modern progressives. “Liberating tolerance would mean intolerance against movements from the right and toleration of movements from the left,” Marcuse pontificated. “Certain things cannot be said, certain ideas cannot be expressed, certain policies cannot be proposed.”

The tolerance mob’s insatiable quest for power and control has led to such unhinged witch-hunting that many of its own erstwhile allies are balking. Novelist Bret Easton Ellis called GLAAD the “gatekeepers of politically correct gayness.” He was attacked as a “self-loathing gay man,” but unlike A&E, he didn’t give in. “An organization holding an awards ceremony that they think represents all gays and also feels they can choose which gays can and cannot be a member of the party is, on the face of it, ridiculous.”…

GLAAD’s counterculture warriors know full well: It’s a small leap from forcing Phil Robertson, the Boy Scouts and Rush Limbaugh out of the public square to forcing wedding photographers and cake bakers to serve gay customers against their will and mandating that Catholic medical providers and Hobby Lobby violate their religious conscience and cover abortion pills in order to stay in business.

***

A&E has the right to its decision, but suspending Phil for his beliefs, even if expressed crudely, seems ungracious. The Robertsons’ Christian values are, in large part, exactly why the show is so popular. Millions of viewers have made it the top reality show of all time because they reject the moral bankruptcy of other reality families. Indeed, the Robertsons’ Christianity has been very profitable for A&E.

The outrage over Phil’s intolerance also seems blindly hypocritical. Many of his most indignant critics, including prominent voices in the media, are the very same people who are overtly intolerant and dismissive of Christians, regularly condemning them as idiots, fanatics and loons.

A colleague of mine — someone I like very much — once said that parents who taught their children the creation story should be charged with child abuse. Another colleague of mine likened a Christian community in Florida to Jonestown. I’ve heard many others openly wish that anti-abortion Christians had been aborted. This is the kind of tolerance to which Phil Robertson should aspire?

***

This is what happened. The whole idea of the show was to parade these nouveau riche Christian hillbillies around so that we could laugh at them. “Look at them,” we were supposed to say. “Look how backward they are! Look what they believe! Can you believe they really live this way and believe this stuff? See how they don’t fit in? HAHAHA”

When the producers saw the way the show was shaping up, different than they envisioned it, they tried to change course. They tried to get the Robertson’s to tone down their Christianity, but to their eternal credit they refused. They tried to add fake cussin’ to the show by inserting bleeps where no cussword was uttered. At best, they wanted to make the Robertson’s look like crass buffoons. At worst they wanted them to look like hypocrites.

They desperately wanted us to laugh at the Robertsons. Instead, we loved them

And then we pointed at them. We pointed at them and said things like, “I wish my family was more like them. I wish we prayed together as a family. I wish we were together like the Robertsons.”

***

“Look, I wouldn’t have certainly said it the way he said it, that’s for darn sure,” Santorum remarked, without saying he disagrees with the sentiment behind Robertson’s statements. At the same time, Santorim said he didn’t believe GLAAD or A&E’s objections had anything to do with the “coarseness” of Robertson’s language.

“What he did was crude and coarse, no doubt about it,” Santorum continued, “but what they really object to was the fact that he quoted scripture and they didn’t like that and that’s what they are really objecting to.”

Well, duh! For the past two years there have been grumblings from the Robertson clan about A&E’s attempts to control their on-air proselytizing. Some A&E Big Wig grossly underestimated the Christian Rednecks, believing that they would choose the cash rather than abandon Phil.

Hey. At least we are all having a National Conversation about homosexuality and personal freedom. Damned shame we can’t do the same about race.

There is something ugly and destructive in there. It stinks of the self-righteous contempt for others of a fool who thinks he knows all the answers, and in whose arrogance finds justification for treating anyone who disagrees with vulgar contempt. You would be well-served if you could find it and rid yourself of it. It will do you serious harm in the long run if you don’t. The fact is you don’t know it all, and your arrogance is going to backfire on you. Try to find some humility, and a better understanding of the humanity you share with most of the rest of us. What appears to you to be the moral high ground may not be, and would not justify your disrespectful misbehavior even it it is.

Today is Dec. 21st, 2013, four days from the largest celebration on earth of the birth of Jesus Christ. And the celebration of His birth is competing head to head over the Duck Dynasty controversy. It is almost impossible to log on to the Internet without seeing photos of the Duck Dynasty cast with a related story. Turn on the TV and there are discussions and commentary from the 3 major networks as well as all the major cable channels. And I think this competition and exposure is a good thing…not bad. In my opinion, the buzz about Phil Robertson’s comments actually is helping to put Christ back into Christmas.

For years the mainstream media, the liberal progressives and others have been trying to marginalize Christianity and the celebration of His birth. Using various tactics, they have attempted to hijack what is commonly celebrated as a Christian holiday by Catholics and most Protestant denominations, and turn it into agnostic celebration for all people, regardless of their belief or non-belief in God and Jesus Christ.

While the origins of Christmas date back before the founding of our country, Christmas day was not declared a legal holiday in the U.S. until 1870 by President Ulysses S. Grant and Congress. Although it is true that Christmas is technically not a “Christian” holiday in the U.S., it was meant to be celebrated as a day for all citizens to reflect and give thanks in a manner as they deemed fit. Over time, it was then adopted by many Christian faiths in our country as a day to commemorate and celebrate the birth of Jesus.

I personally have no problem with with non-believers and others wanting to celebrate the legal holiday to suit their purposes and values, or lack thereof. However, that should be a two-way street, and the Christian majority should not be forced away from their holiday beliefs and traditions to suit a small minority of others. From a legal standpoint, everyone has the right to celebrate or not to celebrate as they choose. As long as all public safety concerns are addressed properly and thoroughly, any attempt to deprive one group of their celebratory beliefs actually should be an unlawful act according to the definition and declaration of the legal holiday.

This annual controversy over Christmas and it’s religious connotations will never end. We seem to live in a society where we must please everyone and ultimately end up pleasing no one. I remind all those that cherish the wonderful Christmas music, complete with the references to the Virgin Mary, Heaven and baby Jesus to stand strong and stand against those that want to take Christ out of Christmas. We must always be allowed to wish others a Merry Christmas. We must never lose the liberty to display the manger scenes in our yards and within our homes.

Phil Robertson and the Duck Dynasty crew has managed to put many of our Christian beliefs on display for the entire country and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. I thank them all.

Bandit13 on December 21, 2013 at 1:37 PM

No they don’t. With the exception of Mormons, whose religion borrows heavily from Christianity and who generally consider themselves Christians, no one is asking people to meet and get to know personally their god. Muslims think God is transcendent, and to suggest he’d get down into the trenches with people is blasphemous. Most of the others believe “God” is either a dispersed presence in the Universe that one should become vaguely aware or, or that many gods comport themselves something like cryptids that are rarely encountered (and best avoided), or that no gods exist, but a satisfying mysticism is available for people wanting one.

Only Christians are asking if people know God personally, and encouraging them to meet personally, and warning that choosing to live without God is choosing to ultimately die.

One of the implications of your remark is that conservative people are pining for the ability to execute Gays. Since you pulled that idea from your ass — or more precisely, you are parroting someone else that pulled that idea from their ass — there’s really nothing to argue with. Believing something negative about people, by the way, in the absence of any evidence that it’s true and in the presence of evidence that it’s false — makes you a bigot. Surprise! And you thought it was the other guy.

Another implication of your remark is that God cannot exist because imperfections exist in creation. To correct you, I would have to explain why a perfect set is not made from perfect elements, and the difference between being perfect in general and being perfect having made selections that restrict best to a subset of options — but the explanation would be so far over your head I’m not going to inflict your inevitable series of snarky, dumbass responses on myself. Pearls. Swine. Look it up.

What else . . .

^ More cave diving. Social conservatives are trying not to get too excited, trying not to throw a party, and you accuse them of having exploding heads. One of their own just took a stand and didn’t back down. They are happy, not frustrated. The heads that are exploding are on the left, among the gay activists who thought their cordon on free speech was air-tight.

Like now, the general population of Man didn’t live in caves two thousand years ago. I feel silly writing that, but — someone has to tell you. Try The Nature of the Gods, if you learn to read good. You’ll find houses, technology, thoughtful discussions, a small number of men having sex with pretty young boys, a spherical earth — all kinds of things. America, basically, without flushing toilets or electricity.

The people that came before you were not less than you in any way; you are not more evolved; you don’t even know more; you certainly don’t understand more. You could learn a great deal from them if you could get over your dumb idea of your post-modern superiority.

You missed a good one in this run of links; and one that summarizes my thoughts well:

http://reason.com/blog/2013/12/19/of-ducks-and-gays-and-tolerance

There may have been a good reason why classical tolerance of expression was summed up in the epigram: “I disagree with what you say, but will defend to the death your right to say it!”

That has a different feel than: “I disagree with what you say, I think you are evil for having said it, I think no one should associate with you and you ought to lose your livelihood, and anyone who doesn’t agree with me about all that is skating on pretty thin ice as well, but hey, I don’t think you should be arrested for it.”

Which of those quotes for “tolerance” do you aspire to and hold most dear?
