Video: Will this ad be Democratic Kryptonite in 2014?

posted at 8:01 am on December 18, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

It’s rare that one single ad in a state-wide contest gets this kind of attention — especially this far out from an election.  Of course, it’s rare to see an entire political party adopt the same blatant lie to sell an unpopular program, with total unanimity, and have it blow up in their faces so completely.  Every Democratic incumbent on Capitol Hill who was in office in March 2010, or defended ObamaCare since, probably has repeated Politifact’s Lie of the Year at least once or twice on camera. Ending Spending makes sure that New Hampshire voters know Jeanne Shaheen participated in that lie, and she’s just the first (via NewsAlert):

Chris Cillizza wrote yesterday that every Democratic incumbent should be scared of this ad showing up in their race:

The Ending Spending ad can be replicated in virtually every single state where an endangered Democratic Senator (or House member) is running.  Find footage of said member praising Obamacare, followed by noting the “lie of the year” award and then follow it up with how many people in the state/district had their policies canceled because of the ACA.

The potential ubiquity of the ad is matched by its potential power. Remember that more than six in ten registered voters in the latest Washington Post-ABC News polldisapprove of President Obama’s handling of health care — including an eye-popping 50 percent who disapprove strongly. (Eighty-eight percent of Republicans and 70 percent of independents disapprove of Obama handling of the health care law.) And,nearly half (47 percent) of voters said that Obamacare is making the health care system worse while just 19 percent said the ACA had made things better.

Add it all up and you have a very scary situation for Shaheen — and any other Democrat, which is almost all of them, on the record supporting the ACA.  Get used to this ad. You are going to see it thousands of times — in various forms — before 2014 is over.

If the GOP and its allies have any intelligence at all, this ad had better make an appearance in those races. In fact, it should make appearances against non-incumbent Democrats, too, just to remind voters that the alternative will be to send more rubber-stamp officials for Barack Obama. In 2013, “you can keep your plan” is the (belated) Lie of the Year. It will be the Argument of the Year in 2014.

The message is clear for Democrats:

If 2014 isn’t a complete and total rout of the weasels in D.C., it may very well end the Republic. My fervent hope is that those idiots in the GOP and RNC, etc., are smart enough to fund this ad and numerous others like it from January to December 2014 – every day, every week, and every month – all year long. Lord help us.

ObysmalCare sucked up taxpayer dollars and will continue to do so, all for further federal intrusion into our lives.

But wait, there’s more…

Look at other ways that federal dollars are wastefully spent. An embedded link shows Dr./Sen. Coburn’s further lists of federal profligacy.

DaveDief on December 18, 2013 at 8:28 AM

Many Dims are still insisting that they (and Obama) didn’t know this was a lie. Pretty hard to square that position with the fact that the White House had political strategy meetings in which Obama’s top political advisers debated whether or not he should keep telling the lie to the public, or if he should add qualifiers and conditions to the statement, in an attempt to try and limit the blowback when the lie was exposed. They chose to go with the lie. They figured Obama could weasel his way out of the lie (like he has so many other times), and that the media would provide cover and assistance (like they have so many other times).

Despite their best efforts, it’s not working. The public is angry and as we go into next year and more people get screwed by Obamacare, they’re going to get even angrier.

The Dims are going to reap what they’ve sown. Enjoy the harvest, losers.

DaveDief on December 18, 2013 at 8:28 AM

I also remember that what put Obama, Pelosi, and Reid in the position to pass ObamaCare were the elections of 2006 and 2008, and a significant part of those wins were Democratic complaining about Republican deficits, and Democratic promises of “no more deficit spending”.

Compare the promises and statements made by Democrats in 2006 – 2008, to the reality of what they’ve done in power:

2006:

Over the past decade, the Republican controlled Congress took our nation in the wrong direction. Too many Americans are paying a heavy price for those wrong choices: record costs for energy, health care and education; jobs shipped overseas; and budgets that heap record debt on our children. For millions, the middle-class dream has been replaced by a middle-class squeeze…

Democrats are proposing a New Direction for America…

With integrity, civility and fiscal discipline, our New Direction for America will use commonsense principles to address the aspirations and fulfill the hopes and dreams of all Americans. That is our promise to the American people….

Our federal budget should be a statement of our national values. One of those values is responsibility. Democrats are committed to ending years of irresponsible budget policies that have produced historic deficits. Instead of piling trillions of dollars of debt onto our children and grandchildren, we will restore “Pay As You Go” budget discipline.

Budget discipline has been abandoned by the Bush Administration and its Republican congressional majorities. Congress under Republican control has turned a projected $5.6 trillion 10-year surplus at the end of the Clinton years into a nearly $3 trillion deficit– including the four worst deficits in the history of America. The nation’s debt ceiling has been raised four times in just five years to more than $8.9 trillion. Nearly half of our nation’s record debt is owned by foreign countries including China and Japan. Without a return to fiscal discipline, the foreign countries that make our computers, our clothing and our toys will soon be making our foreign policy. Deficit spending is not just a fiscal problem – it’s a national security issue as well.

Our New Direction is committed to “Pay As You Go” budgeting – no more deficit spending.

2007:

After years of historic deficits, this 110th Congress will commit itself to a higher standard: pay-as-you-go, no new deficit spending. Our new America will provide unlimited opportunity for future generations, not burden them with mountains of debt.

- New Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 01/04/2007

2008:

“The problem is, is that the way Bush has done it over the last eight years is to take out a credit card from the Bank of China in the name of our children, driving up our national debt from $5 trillion for the first 42 presidents – #43 added $4 trillion by his lonesome, so that we now have over $9 trillion of debt that we are going to have to pay back — $30,000 for every man, woman and child. That’s irresponsible. It’s unpatriotic.

- Barack Obama July 3, 2008

In 2006, Democrats complained about Republicans having created the four worst deficits in the history of America. But the last budget passed by a Republican House, Republican Senate, and Republican President (passed in 2006 for FY 2007) had a deficit of less than $161 Billion.

The Democrats have held majority control of the budgeting and appropriations process for FY 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013. Those six fiscal years have produced the SIX worst deficits in the history of America.

The same Democrats who complained of Republicans having created “the four worst deficits in the history of America”, the same Democrats who promised “no more deficit spending”, went on to create the SIX worst deficits in the history of America, blowing away what previous records by a huge margin.

Republican majorities added $4 Trillion to the total national debt over the course of 12 Fiscal Years (FY 1996-2007)

Democrat majorities added over $8 Trillion to the total national debt over the course of just 6 Fiscal Years (FY 2008-2013).

Democrats, after promising fiscal discipline and no more deficit spending, have done the EXACT OPPOSITE, and have been deficit spending at OVER FOUR TIMES THE RATE of their Republican predecessors.

And remember, the last budget passed by a Republican House, Republican Senate, and Republican President was passed in 2006 for FY 2007 and resulted in a deficit of less than $161 Billion.

Democrats made deficit spending and the national debt a campaign issue in 2006 and won both houses of Congress with promises of fiscal discipline and “no more deficit spending”.

Now, Democrats think that fiscal discipline is old and busted…

I guess ads featuring a large blue bovine only covers up a certain amount of incompetence.

Speaking of military disasters, I was reading about the battle of Midway last night. The Japanese launched attacks against Midway and a diversionary attack on the Aleutians to draw American forces away. At the end, the Japanese lost four aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser. They did manage to take two largely uninhabited islands in the Aleutians. The spin from Tokyo was that those carriers were sacrificed so that Japan could take Alaska. When I read that, I couldn’t help but think of Jay Carney’s spin over Obamacare where every bit of bad news is dismissed as something we should have know about all along.

The Ending Spending ad can be replicated in virtually every single state where an endangered Democratic Senator (or House member) is running.

Why stop there? Even in deep blue states, the local GOP manages to field candidates. While the national party won’t pour money into those races, producing this kind of ad can’t be too expensive and those candidates should do it.

Super-majority for the GOP, anyone?

The national party’s message should be “Give us a super majority, and we’ll pass constitutional amendments to make sure politicians never lie to you like this again.”

A new Contact With America, anyone?

I don’t trust the national GOP much more than I trust the Democrats.

Best bet is to make sure state legislatures become even more conservative so they can lead the fight against DC.

And please urge your state legislators to join the Article V Caucus and support an Article V convention so we can start taking power away from DC.

Pretty much.

The GOP isn’t losing because it’s lacked an argument or an ad. It’s been losing because it’s hostile to the interests of its base, tied to unpopular wars, foolishly chasing minority votes at the expense of its base (“What up!?”), and dishonest.

Allahpundit: “It’s odd how not a single one of these pro-amnesty Republicans ever has their immigration epiphany as a candidate.”

The Republican Party can lose regardless of what the Democrats are doing and how vulnerable they are. Just run on more wars, liberal values disguised as “moderation”, and defeating your own base, and it’s done.

Great 30 second ad … however, seeing that the Gimmedat’s have almost the ENTIRE medial cabal behind them, supporting them, editorializing for them, this ad will be minimized by EVERY talking head on the tube.

The Gimmedats could be caught in a motel room with a young girl (see: William Jefferson Bly Clinton) or a dead boy (see: Menendez, NJ) and the media will move heaven and earth to protect them.

“Inc.” equates to “BIG CORPORATE” which negates the ad fully in the lifetime-of-brain-washed minds of a Democrat voter.

Lose the “Inc.”.

Carnac on December 18, 2013 at 11:31 AM

That ad is more effective in NH than in other states, because only one insurance provider is on the NH “exchange”, so that Obamacare effectively changed a competitive insurance market into a state monopoly, as was pointed out by New Hampshire’s other Senator Kelly Ayotte (R).

If the ad is adapted to other Senate races in other states which have more than one insurance provider in the exchange, the part about only one provider would have to be edited out.

Senator Ayotte also pointed out that the leading hospital in the state capital of Concord is not in the “network” of hospitals reimbursed by the single insurer, so that people who have received care there will have to switch hospitals. This claim might be adapted to other states where major hospitals are no longer in the “networks” of Obamacare-qualified insurance plans.
