Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson suspended by A&E for comments on homosexuality

posted at 9:31 pm on December 18, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Phil Robertson is the patriarch of the very popular Robertson family of the very popular A&E show, “Duck Dynasty.” The Robertsons, who run a multi-million dollar duck call and hunting gear company, are beloved for their good-natured family drama, creative country fun, and down home senses of humor. They’re also vocally devout Christians, and Phil credits Jesus with keeping him sane and his family together when he was headed down a very different path.

In an interview with GQ, Robertson talked in part about homosexuality, paraphrasing a Biblical passage:

“We’re Bible-thumpers who just happened to end up on television,” he tells me. “You put in your article that the Robertson family really believes strongly that if the human race loved each other and they loved God, we would just be better off. We ought to just be repentant, turn to God, and let’s get on with it, and everything will turn around.”

What does repentance entail? Well, in Robertson’s worldview, America was a country founded upon Christian values (Thou shalt not kill, etc.), and he believes that the gradual removal of Christian symbolism from public spaces has diluted those founding principles. (He and Si take turns going on about why the Ten Commandments ought to be displayed outside courthouses.) He sees the popularity of Duck Dynasty as a small corrective to all that we have lost.

“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong,” he says. “Sin becomes fine.”

What, in your mind, is sinful?

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,” he says. Then he paraphrases Corinthians: “Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

He also said this, which is the part of his views on sexuality getting all the headlines:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina – as a man – would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me.”

It’s certainly a colorful expression of his personal preference, and expresses mild confusion for others’ tastes, but it’s not a terribly mean-spirited comment.

Now, he’s been suspended by A&E indefinitely because they object that the devout Christian and social conservative cash cow who averages 14 million viewers per episode might express views on homosexuality that differ from, say, those Pajama Boy might express in his Oberlin Race & Gender in the Media symposium. (For perspective, A&E’s “Breaking Bad” series finale— the most talked about finale in the history of all TV ever—attracted 10 million viewers.)

“We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson’s comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty,” A&E said in a statement, which was reported byThe Hollywood Reporter. “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely.”

Because GLAAD is mad, and though there’s no evidence that Phil Robertson has ever discriminated against gay men and women or treated them badly, he must be punished for his views.

GLAAD:

“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe. He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples. Phil’s decision to push vile and extreme stereotypes is a stain on A&E and his sponsors who now need to re-examine their ties to someone with such public disdain for LGBT people and families.”

This statement doesn’t really seem to match Robertson’s actual comments, but I’m guessing they’re just in cut and paste mode at this point. Robertson offered this statement and will appear on Megyn Kelly’s show tonight:

“I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together.

“However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

To the Left, it doesn’t matter how Robertson actually treats real people. The thought that homosexual acts are wrong is enough to make him a bad person who should be fired. He’s literally guilty of a thought crime against humanity even if he is literally tolerant of gay people every day of his life. There is no room for tolerance of him.

I don’t agree with Robertson’s remarks, but this is clearly an overreaction. Even those who are more critical of Robertson than I think this was a bad move by A&E. Maybe if he had talked about someone defecating in a specific gay political figure’s mouth, he could have gotten a few more weeks on the air. (For the record, I wasn’t a huge fan of Martin Bashir or that Martin Bashir got fired for saying something dumb, as I think we should allow room for people on both sides to say things that offend people without getting fired.) I’m sure it’s a misreading of A&E’s audience, who will not take kindly to this decision, and probably the Robertson family, who will have countless offers to do their show elsewhere and, oh yeah, also have a multi-million dollar company to keep them occupied.

Twitchy’s keeping track of the backlash.

Phil Robertson listed a bunch of behaviors in his diatribe. When the heck did this become a country where you couldn’t decide you didn’t like someone else’s behavior.

Do gays really think this helps them? Do they think that shutting dialogue down will suddenly make people “accept’ them or do they just want to force acceptance by the end of a sword?

I don’t think Phil is the kind of guy to back down. This is going to be interesting to see how it plays out.

And Phil was right about the Bible, of course. It is a joke to think that Huffpo, GLAAD, the HRC and other Baal-worshipers are the arbiters of true Christianity.

Conservalicious on December 18, 2013 at 9:46 PM

The Left will attack opponents of homosexuality as Christian bigots but religion aside, homosexuality is simply unnatural.

Even if you are a Darwinist atheist you would be able to reject homosexuality simply due to its lack of procreative purpose. The purpose of intercourse, natural heterosexual, intercourse, among almost ALL animal species is procreation. Without male/female intercourse the human race would die. Homosexuality is a biological abnormality and dead end.

So gays can whine all they want about us being bigots because we think their behavior is immoral, disgusting, and contrary to scripture but we can just counter by saying homosexuality is biologically unnatural and a perversion of the natural order. God can be removed from the argument and when He is, their most potent line of attack is removed.

Charlemagne on December 18, 2013 at 9:47 PM

We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

that statement by Phil is just as offensive to the Left and The Offended as anything else he said.

This ought to be interesting. Let’s see how long he’s kicked off the show and how the family feels about it. Somehow I don’t see Walmart pulling Duck Dynasty merchandise off the shelves, but time will tell.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina – as a man – would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me.”

It’s certainly a colorful expression of his personal preference, and expresses mild confusion for others’ tastes, but it’s not a terribly mean-spirited comment.

Actually, there’s no confusion there, at all. Male homosexuality is all about anuses. But to even speak of that is disallowed – firstly because it was never polite conversation in any way, and secondly because the gay lobby could never face up publicly to what male homosexuality is really about.

It’s interesting that as AIDs was sweeping the gay community (and Haitians and later Africa) there was never any discussion about particularly dangerous sexual practices – like ana.l sex – nor any discussion about why gay males were so disproportionately affected. In fact, there were never any serious scientific studies about ana.l sex and AIDs through all of the first decade and then some … because even pointing out any relationship with ana.l sex (a mainstay and foundation of male homosexuality) was not allowed. Not even when the spread of AIDs among heterosexuals in Africa became so rampant (and with the fact that ana.l sex was widely practiced among heterosexuals there … coincidence!).

Instead, we were all told time and again that AIDs was not a “gay” disease and that the heterosexual community was about to be swamped with AIDs any second … which, of course, never happened.

What Robertson said in that sentence is as clear and true as one can get about male homosexuality and what it is really about.

RdLake on December 18, 2013 at 9:52 PM

To the Left, it doesn’t matter how Robertson actually treats real people. The thought that homosexual acts are wrong is enough to make him a bad person who should be fired.

Good summary of the difference. The Left is about what you think; the Right is about what you do. The Left cares about how you view the world; the Right cares about how you treat people.

Another way to say it, the Left loves humanity, it’s just individual people they can’t stand. And if the Right thinks humanity is depraved, but treats people well, then, isn’t that better? Isn’t the social contract based on how we treat each other, not on our views?

Seriously, the guy answered a question. This is that Prejean woman all over again.

Just because someone thinks homosexuality is a sin doens’t mean that person hates gay people. If that were true, then by the same logic vegetarians must then hate meat eaters because they think eating meat is wrong.

Then you have this jack-assery spoking by someone from GLAAD:

” By taking quick action and removing Robertson from future filming, A&E has sent a strong message that discrimination is neither a Christian nor an American value.”

Seriously? Where does it show that the guy is discriminating against gay people?

And then the same jack-ass says this:

“”Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe,”"

What would a very, VERY anti-christian (and I don’t say that because they are gay) know about what true christians believe? And what lies is he referring to? Everything the guy stated was an opinion. Hence his “but that’s just me” remark.

DethMetalCookieMonst on December 18, 2013 at 9:59 PM

I’m of two minds:

It’s a network. He *works* for them. It’s a private agreement/contract. They can fire them if they feel he’s bad for their business.

Then again:

Why in the Blue Hell does approximately 1-5% of the population get to push the other 95% or so around, as they see fit? (normally libs have real problems with that kind of disparity, where are they on THIS?) Why is the Network THAT AFRAID of that small percentage of the viewing population? ESPECIALLY for that show. What are the chances more than 1% of THAT demographic are watching Duck Dynasty?

Political correctness has turned into the tyranny of the minority.

i am happy that he quoted the Bible’s position on homosexuality. i wish more celebrities would have the courage to do this. though i’m not even sure if i would have the courage. once you reveal that you think homosexual behavior is sinful according to the Bible, tons and tons of people hate you and ironically, you are accused of being a “hater.”

he clearly said that it was just his own opinion. he said “that’s just me,” so he is not imposing that view on others. and i will talk about my own opinion now: i honestly can’t for the life of me understand how it would be exciting to do something sexual with the same sex. i don’t get it. i see a girl’s body every day when i look in the mirror, so why would i be excited to touch other girls’ bodies?? i don’t understand how that isn’t boring. i don’t get it and if only someone would explain it to me.

Do gays really think this helps them? Do they think that shutting dialogue down will suddenly make people “accept’ them or do they just want to force acceptance by the end of a sword?

melle1228 on December 18, 2013 at 9:42 PM

just shows how afraid they are of people who believe homosexuality is a sin. they want to silence anyone who says it. they will not tolerate it. they only listen to people who agree with them. they can’t stand hearing another point of view. it’s too scary for them.

i really wish “gay-rights” supporters would understand what it’s like to be a supporter of the Bible’s views on sexuality. they claim that people are intolerant of their views, but what about us? it’s not like we can go around talking about our views either. people hate us as soon as we do it. it’s amazing how they can’t stand a different opinion. i see people all the time who think that homosexuality is okay and everyone should accept it. yet i don’t get angry and try to silence anyone who says that. i’m used to people saying things that go against my Biblical beliefs. i see it all the time. why can’t these “gay-rights” people accept that some people have a different opinion? i can, so why can’t they?? it makes me so incredibly upset.

Off to go look for one.

The Left plays for keeps and they usually get what they want.

Punchenko on December 18, 2013 at 9:58 PM

No doubt. They will crush dissent at almost any cost and use all the tricks. They care not for what he really said. It is about twisting it for their own use.

CWchangedhisNicagain on December 18, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Yup. The high priests of “progress” guard their media soapbox jealously and will not let a popular counterculture figure like Phil Robertson rob them of it.

AllahsNippleHair on December 18, 2013 at 10:06 PM

We are getting to the point where if you dare express opposition to gay marriage or speak of homosexuality in negative terms then you will be harassed, destroyed and prosecuted.

This is an ongoing, full assault on Christianity, in an effort to stomp out the influence of religion, and on those who refused to go along with the politically correct line.

This is extreme intimidation and bullying by the same people who preach “tolerance.”

Getting suspended from A&E is kinda like being suspended from the professional wiffle ball league.

On to bigger and better things Mr. Robertson.

“Phil Robertson’s remarks are not consistent with the values of our faith communities or the scientific findings of leading medical organizations,” president Chad Griffin said in a statement. “We know that being gay is not a choice someone makes, and that to suggest otherwise can be incredibly harmful. We also know that Americans of faith follow the Golden Rule — treating others with the respect and dignity you’d wish to be treated with. As a role model on a show that attracts millions of viewers, Phil Robertson has a responsibility to set a positive example for young Americans — not shame and ridicule them because of who they are.

First off, who the heck made GLAAD and the Human Rights campaign arbiters of what a True Christian is and spokesmen for Faith Communities? Nobody, that’s who.

Second, there are people who change their sexual orientation in midlife so there are at least some people who do indeed choose it and it’s ridiculous to suggest it’s harmful to say otherwise. Never mind the suggestion gays are born that way which is scientifically unproven and not likely to ever be proven.

Third, it is not disrespectful or undignified to state what the Bible says is sinful, PERIOD. The Golden Rule states you should treat others as you would be want to be treated. I am sure Phil Robertson would be fine if someone told him what they thought was sinful even if it included some of his own behavior. So he is fine as far as the Golden Rule goes.

Finally, no one supports everything. The idea that if you do not support gay sex you are a bad role model is just plain stupid.

I don’t agree with Robertson’s remarks …

What, MKH, is disagreeable in his remarks? Or, is your issue the straight-forward, graphic manner in which he expressed them? Substance or form? Hmmm?

Am I the only one who isn’t shocked that AtheistFeeevaaah didn’t post this thread?

Eph on December 18, 2013 at 10:09 PM

So in today’s America its not enough to tolerate homosexuals you must approve of their activity.Interesting how these gay groups are up in arms about comments made by one man on Duck Dynasty, while remaining silent as homosexuals are executed in Iran and other Islamic countries.

Hera on December 18, 2013 at 10:09 PM

I am SHOCKED that one of the ‘Bigs’ at a conservative website bastion such as HotAir would say this. (Please Note The Heavy Sarcasm)
