Boehner slams righty PACs over budget deal again: “Frankly I think they’ve lost all credibility”

posted at 1:01 pm on December 12, 2013 by Allahpundit

Confession: I did not expect that this lame budget deal would be Boehner’s red line for tea-party criticism. But maybe it had to be that way. If he’d slammed them in October, when Cruz and Lee had galvanized the base against the bete noire of O-Care, it might have cost him his gavel. The stakes are lower now — he proved he was willing to shut down the government for a conservative cause, everyone understands that any budget deal with Democrats will vary only in shades of badness, and enough people have tuned out of the news in December that there won’t be any grand revolt against him. If he wants to throw down the gauntlet to groups like the Club for Growth and FreedomWorks, now’s as good a time as any. And who knows? Maybe he legitimately feels it’s “ridiculous” for conservative PACs to shriek over a compromise when the stakes are as small as they are here. Take it from me: Even a RINO has his breaking point, my friends. Our candy-asses can stand kicking only so many times.

Is this smart, though?

The more antagonistic he gets with outfits like Heritage Action, the greater the risk that they’ll elevate this vote into a litmus test and the greater the pressure there’ll be on Republican fencesitters in the House to vote no. Then again, the vote’s only four or five hours away. This was the point of jamming the bill through this week — the quicker you move, the less time conservative PACs have to build opposition. Members want to go home for Christmas. They’ll risk some short-term grassroots wrath over a vote that people almost certainly won’t remember a year from now.

Here’s video from his presser. Watch for the big “Are you kidding me?!” freakout at 1:30. Terrifying exit question:

Apparently Eva missed the Democrats enthusiasm for locking the GOP out of the room when Obamacare was drafted and refused to allow even a single amendment to the bill. That’s their idea of compromise.

besser tot als rot on December 12, 2013 at 1:46 PM

Sorry it took me so long to get back.

The difference between the two is that this budget is pretty much nothing. We will quibble over whether it really cuts or raises spending (I would vote slightly increase – though it is so small as to be a rounding error). This is the status quo. Our population, for whatever reason voted for not wanting to face financial reality. SO be it.

Amnesty and the minimum wage increase are not the status quo – and require an affirmative change. Thus blocking is possible. Neither shut down the govt (or 15% of it or whatever it was). So your linking of these three things is pretty counterfactual.

I am not for shooting anyone who thinks this deal is good or bad. I would imagine even those GOP who think it is good are saying that in a political sense, it takes a weapon out of Obama’s arsenal and pretty much leaves him powerless to stop what is coming at him with the rollout of his signature accomplishment.

The dems are starting that same war with Warren with the crazy notion that Obama is not left enough – and there fore Hillary definitely won’t be. I’m not interested in creating a false mutiny over this issue. Senate rules have always allowed 51 votes on budgetary matters. This tweak means nothing, and its not like Reid will abide by anything he says today anyway. Fact is I would tell Boehner that any procedural commitment you made you should just change when it is convenient.

Obamacare is just going to get worse.

Bigger problem is that the country is divided and DC loves to accumulate power. It is a drug. That is why it only gets worse, not better. We need the states to begin to stop the feds. The feds don’t have the ability to stop the states from doing what they choose to do. Take on the DOJ, the EPA, etc. What are they going to do when you defy them? They have no ability to enforce what the states choose to not let them enforce. Every state has more manpower to protect their own interests than the fed has to enforce theirs.

Work at the local level and start getting local govts who will essentially ignore the feds. They have standing on every single thing Obama is doing.

WASHINGTON – It’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of the budget deal.

“Embrace the suck,” House minority leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi told fellow Democrats Thursday morning, a source told Politico.

“We need to get this off the table so we can go forward,” she added. It’s a way of telling her colleagues the budget deal negotiated with Republicans is the best they can get.(More….)

Meanwhile, Republicans don’t seem in much danger of losing any of their seats.

What a difference two months make. In October, amidst the government shutdown, people like MSNBC’s Chuck Todd were talking about a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives. That scenario seems like science fiction now.

So Obama no longer has much political pull, and his gravitational pull may be destructive to his party. In this regard, the president is very far from finished in terms of the damage he might do.

Ohhhhhhh. I see. You don’t really have any. This is just trying to bulls*it an answer hoping we won’t notice. That might work on your final, but it won’t wash here.

Bitter Clinger on December 12, 2013 at 4:06 PM

You don’t need to sing it in a Dr. Seuss rhyme, but you certainly need to provide specifics.

Saying that you would pass legislation that takes a “carrot and the stick” approach just makes it seem as if you don’t have a clue what you’d do if you had control of the House and Senate.

Soros’ car needs washing Boehner. Better snap to it. The perfect fake tan can wait.

viking01 on December 12, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Boehner, and the other members of the GOP Congressional Leadership are unhappy because they are being called out by the conservative PAC’s, think tanks, and individuals.

They looked at the poll numbers, and figured that since the GOP was benefiting from the EpicClusterFark and the resulting lack of openness, transparency, and honesty from the Administration, they would do whatever they could to ensure that there would not be another government shutdown in January that could be blamed on the GOP by the progressives and the lapdog media.

To achieve this, they signed off on the ditching of the sequester – something that they held onto even throughout the Oct government shutdown – and increasing spending while running the usual shuck and jive around spending cuts in years 8,9, and 10 of the 10 year projection offsetting the near term increases. Then all of this was wrapped in a promise of ‘when we get control of Congress, hopefully in the wake of 2014, and control of the WH, hopefully in the wake of 2016, we’ll do the ‘right thing’.’

As I’ve noted, if the progressives are driving us down the road to their ‘utopia’ at 150mph, and the ‘GOP leadership’ says this is wrong, and then votes to drive us down the SAME ROAD at 75mph, the only thing we’ve done is slow the trip to the destination – not change direction or destination. And that is what this country really needs – a new destination.

‘Going along to get along’, or avoiding a fight, or avoiding giving the sycophants in the Ministry of Truth ‘justification’ for attacking you isn’t leading. It’s following or cowering. It’s not fixing the problem or giving us a different / better destination. It’s kicking the can down the road so the GOP leadership elitists can pat themselves on the back and remind us that they’re special.

We need leaders. This batch isn’t leading. It’s time to get a new batch in there to lead. If the one’s there now don’t like it, then either lead or get the **** out of the way.

Speaker Boehner the message has been loud, clear and simple: stop the spending.

You aren’t doing that.

And until you pull out all the pork, all the subsidies, and all the gifts, plus all the funding from Obamacare, you can really stop complaining about other people playing with the lives of the American People via the budget. That is ALL that the Progressives on both sides have been doing for a century and it has gotten us to this horrific point and you want to do MORE OF IT.

That is Stuck On Stupid in overdrive.

Right on, sister.

“The Republicans’ dirty little secret in this process has always been that their own appropriators hate the sequester almost as much as the Democrats do.”
