US Army Lt. Col. proposes new gun control platform

posted at 2:01 pm on December 8, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

This story relates to an op-ed which was published earlier this week in Esquire Magazine, and it provides a chilling look at precisely how far askew the debate over Second Amendment rights in this country has swung. I expect to see all manner of anti-second amendment rights arguments from denizens inside the ivy covered walls of universities, liberal politicians in major cities and the feces infested tent camps of the former Occupy movement. But this one should catch our attention, being written by an active duty Lt. Colonel in the United States Army. Meet Robert Bateman. (Hat Tip to BIZPAC Review).

After citing the sad story of an Alabama fan who shot another team supporter last week and professing embarrassment for his own nation, Col. Bateman identifies what he sees as the crux of the problem.

Five of the nine members of the Supreme Court agreed that the part in the Second Amendment which talks about “A Well Regulated Militia, Being Necessary To The Security Of A Free State…” did not matter. In other words, they flunked basic high school history.

The lengths to which Justice Scalia had to go in his attempt to rewrite American history and the English language are as stunning as they are egregious. In essence, what he said about the words written by the Founding Fathers was, “Yeah, they didn’t really mean what they said.”

You have got to be fking kidding me. Seriously? You spent nearly 4,000 words to deny the historical reality of thirteen words? That, sir, is an embarrassingly damning indictment not just of you, but of an educational system that failed to teach history.

It would be a waste of space to detail for the umpteenth time the number of historical and legal fallacies in those few paragraphs, so we won’t spend the time here doing that today. The man is flat out wrong on nearly every count, and most of you reading this already know the real intent of both the Founders and Justice Scalia on this issue. But from there, Bateman goes on to propose a new plank for any willing political platform committee which would allegedly set matters to rights. Hang on to your hats, because here’s where it gets frightening.

I am adding the following “Gun Plank” to the Bateman-Pierce platform. Here are some suggestions:

1. The only guns permitted will be the following:
a. Smoothbore or Rifled muzzle-loading blackpowder muskets. No 7-11 in history has ever been held up with one of these.
b. Double-barrel breech-loading shotguns. Hunting with these is valid.
c. Bolt-action rifles with a magazine capacity no greater than five rounds. Like I said, hunting is valid. But if you cannot bring down a defenseless deer in under five rounds, then you have no fking reason to be holding a killing tool in the first place.

2. We will pry your gun from your cold, dead, fingers. That is because I am willing to wait until you die, hopefully of natural causes. Guns, except for the three approved categories, cannot be inherited. When you die your weapons must be turned into the local police department, which will then destroy them. (Weapons of historical significance will be de-milled, but may be preserved.)

3. Police departments are no longer allowed to sell or auction weapons used in crimes after the cases have been closed. (That will piss off some cops, since they really need this money. But you know what they need more? Less violence and death. By continuing the process of weapon recirculation, they are only making their jobs — or the jobs of some other cops — harder.)

4. We will submit a new tax on ammunition. In the first two years it will be 400 percent of the current retail cost of that type of ammunition. (Exemptions for the ammo used by the approved weapons.) Thereafter it will increase by 20 percent per year.

5. We will initiate a nationwide “buy-back” program, effective immediately, with the payouts coming from the DoD budget. This buy-back program will start purchasing weapons at 200 percent of their face value the first year, 150 percent the second year, 100 percent the third year. Thereafter there will be a 10 year pause, at which point the guns can be sold to the government at 10 percent of their value for the next 50 years.

6. The major gun manufactures of the United States, less those who create weapons for the federal government and the armed forces, will be bought out by the United States of America, for our own damned good.

The anti-gun rights crowd has been so successful in peddling their pablum that an officer in our own Army has bought into it lock, stock and barrel (if you’ll pardon the phrase). Nearly every wish list item from the far left wing of the Democrat party is in play. They seek to regulate gun ownership and use through taxes, followed by restricting the types of available firearms to technology which is a century or more old. And over the longer span of time, to slowly confiscate every gun not in the hands of the police and the military. (And some of them aren’t too sure about the police, either.)

This is what you’re facing today, and a prime reason why we should continue to avoid giving one inch to the various “reasonable” demands for “minor concessions” as they pop up in Congress and around the states. People like to scoff at the “slippery slope” argument in most debates (sometimes with good reason), but here it remains completely valid. This is the agenda where all such proposals are heading, and now they’ve got an Army officer spouting it. Remain vigilant.

Supposedly, Col. Bateman has been peddling this idea for a while not, and simply used the Alabama shooting to trot it out again. The idea that military guys would only want the military or other government entities to carry guns is a pretty common thought in other parts of the world, but not here.

Odds are good the Democrats try to enlist Batemen to run in a Purple district sometime in the near future, using his Army resume to fool the low-info voters. Of course, I’m pretty sure the NRA and others will keep people appraised of the colonel’s policy stances (has anyone ever gotten a negative number rating from the NRA on gun control? Batemen could earn that honor).

So it’s a civil war he wants.

The musket was the M-16 of its day. It was the mainstay of European armies in the 18th Century. So we should be allowed to own them. I will concede dumping the select fire option for the civilian market, and go solely with the semi-automatic version, the AR-15, just to show how reasonable I am. But that’s it.

You can see part of the takedown here:

And just to amplify what others above said, we have a Second Amendment for a reason and it ain’t hunting, skeet shooting, collecting or even for self defense of our persons and property, although all of that is a very nice and welcome side benefit.

We have our Second Amendment rights to protect us against a tyrannical government. Period.

And I submit to you that when the Founders were contemplating the inclusion of this amendment into the bill of rights that a scenario much like what we have today in Washington is exactly and precisely what they were thinking about.

Remember, the Second is not a limitation upon you, the citizen, to keep and bear arms, it is a prohibition against the government to infringe upon the possession of arms. They knew that any void in the literal meaning of the wording would be a slippery slope towards the very act of confiscation that ignited the Revolution at Lexington and Concord.

Sounds like we’ve got ourselves a pampered prince who is looking to use the shared political viewpoint of the progressive left to advance his career. For him, it’s probably not a bad idea since this Administration has already demonstrated that it will happily work to purge the senior levels of those officers who do not share their political agenda or viewpoint. But it doesn’t make him any less wrong.

BTW- If it is against the UCMJ to attend / participate in political rallies when in uniform, how does making and promoting a political statement using one’s position and stature within the Armed Forces differ?

The intent of gun control is taught by the British, China, The Soviet Union, and Islamists. Gun control leads to gun seizure, and the sole purpose is to disarm the populace, allowing the government to kill, and intimidate those who disagree with the authority.

Our earned freedom (what marginally remains) is only maintained by our ability to own guns. It has been proven, time and again, the first step to passivate a society is to remove their means to defend themselves. The British attempted to disarm the North American colonies, they disarmed India, and their other colonies. The Soviet Union, China, and other communist regimes disarmed their populations. Islamists disarm those they oppose. What those countries all have in common, is that as soon as they disarm the population, they commence in wholesale slaughter, and imprisonment of the the opposition.

Gun control has nothing to do with safety, any more than Obamacare has anything to affordable or care, or abortion has to do with women’s health.

Do you think that U.S. progressives won’t attempt to slaughter and imprison their opposition? Are our progressives somehow more benevolent than those in Asia, the Mid-East, Europe, and Africa? Go to liberal and progressive websites and read how many of the posts fantasize about murder, death, and rape of their opponents. It isn’t rhetoric, it is their fondest desire.

Rio Linda Refugee on December 8, 2013 at 2:56 PM

Wow, this some of the most stunningly badly reasoned out pieces of tripe I’ve seen in a long time.

Basically it amounts of.

“Eff the supreme court, and eff you too! Lets just confiscate guns by force!”

Granted, he’s talking about slowly doing it by force, but by force never-the-less. The complete and utter lack of respect this individual for the due process of the legal system, for his fellow Americans, and ultimately for the constitution itself, is nothing short of shameful.

Simple fact of the matter, is this.

First, most guns used in crime are of the ultra affordable variety. You’ve heard of the term, Saturday Night Special, well that’s the sort of gun most commonly involved in crime.

Second, there’s no way to get rid of these guns, if people truly want them. They’re low tech weapons, and the components could largely be made in any average machine shop in the nation. You know how the left freaks out about guns made via 3D Printers? Well those guns are crap in comparison to what you could make in a proper machine shop. The left hasn’t realized just how easy these weapons are to make, when they do I suspect they’ll have some sort of existential crisis.

Third, there is no firm correlation between rates of gun ownership, and crime. This is something else the left just doesn’t want to face right now. It’s true that places like The UK, and much of Europe, has much lower levels of gun ownership than America, which is unsurprising, as guns were a larger cultural factor in America then in most of these nations. Well, despite that lower gun rate, the rate of violent crime isn’t all that much lower. If the lefts argument held true, countries with only 1/8th the gun ownership levels, would have 1/8th the crime. in reality, the violent crime rate is often only about half that in America, and frequently even that mark isn’t achieved. For better stats though, you can compare American cities and counties with high gun ownership rates, and compare them with crime rates. By far, the overwhelming majority of area’s with high gun ownership, also have very low violent crime rates.

The real difference, the single factor that drives violent crime in America, more than any other, isn’t guns, it’s Gang violence. Often time gang violence doesn’t even involve guns, or weaponry. Instead, you just see thugs in places like Chicago, knifing each other, or even simply beating each other to death.

You remove violent crime related to gun violence, and America’s violent crime rate then plummets So pretending that it’s guns, is a stupid political sideshow. If these jokers were serious about reducing violent crime, they’d be pushing to fix failing school systems, and to give law enforcement the resources they needed to break these gangs up.

Instead, these bozo’s spend untold millions every year, trying to convince people to give up their rights, for no good reason.

If it weren’t so dangerous, it’d almost be funny.

WolvenOne on December 8, 2013 at 2:58 PM

This is ObamaCare with bullets, and, like O-Care, people will be VERY unhappy when they learn what is going to be taken from them without their consent.

I wonder what his plans are for getting illegal guns out of the ghettos, though, since the amount of actual crime committed by a legal gun owner is very slim.

And I second what others say: Molon Labe, Sweetheart. It took me almost a year to get my Glock 17, and anyone who tries to take it away needs to be prepared to advance through a hail of bullets.

The removal of warriors in the military must have accelerated since I was on active duty. Back then, it was highly illegal (from an ethics perspective) for an active duty officer to use rank on anything political- and make no mistake this is not just an “opinion piece” when he openly rejects the part of his oath to “protect and defend the United States Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic.” LTC Bateman, is an enemy of the state as far as I’m concerned.

And BTW the disclaimer he gives:

These opinions are those of the author and do not reflect the United States government, the United States Department of Defense, the United States Army, or any other official body. As for the NRA, they can sit on it. (Sorry, I grew up with Happy Days. “Sit on it” means something to those of my generation.) R_Bateman_LTC@hotmail.com.

Does not discount the fact that he should not have used his rank in the first place. Robert Bateman could have written that commentary without issue. It is another thing entirely when he uses rank and affiliation with the Army.

Bateman is president and founder of Alliance Defense Marketing Associates LLC, a “global premier risk management” firm that does work for the DHS.

According to the company’s website, part of the services offered by the firm include, “Homeland Security operational initiatives.”

According to Bateman’s official LinkedIn page, he also personally specializes in “Defense/Homeland Security/Law Enforcement operational initiatives.”

Note that he is an active duty officer, not a reservist, acting as a private-enterprise contractor to both the U.S. and foreign governments.

This violates several provisions of both the U.S. Code and UCMJ.

At the very least, Bateman (I refuse to dignify him with rank) should be cashiered immediately. Furthermore, considering that among his contract customers is the People’s Republic of China, his access to classified material should be revoked even faster.

Since promotions to flag rank have to be confirmed by Congress, any attempt to frock him with even half a star should end with his appearance in front of a Congressional committee concerning his willingness to violate the Constitution hew took an oath to uphold.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. He is not entitled to pursue his on the taxpayers’ dime.

At a press conference today, President Obama announced plans for the first ever federally funded Muslim outreach program. The program will be available nationwide for all elementary school students grade K-12 beginning February 1st, 2014. The program is designed to educate children about the fundamentals of the Muslim religion and Islamic belief.

President Obama spoke with reporters to explain why it is so important that these outreach programs exist. “The Muslim community deserves our full understanding and respect,” Obama said. “We have killed millions of Muslims overseas since the September 11th attacks. These folks are not all bad. In fact, most of them are hardworking citizens just like you and me. I encourage every student in America to participate in your school’s Muslim outreach program. Learn about the Muslim community, the beauty of the Sunnah and the magic of the Qur’an.”

Speaking of traitorous aholes that need to be thrown up against the wall.

Sure nice of this chap to be a sterling example of why 2A exists. We should be thanking him.

Pay close attention folks…

This is the kind of military guy who would give an enthusiastic “Yessir!” If ordered to turn his weapons on his countrymen.

In his eyes it would be a lawful order.

Prediction – Bateman will be Army Chief of Staff by 2016 after his superiors are all purged.

Steve Eggleston on December 8, 2013 at 3:27 PM

Wrong guy. Never rely on InfoWars for anything

JohnBrown on December 8, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Then put the correct one up. He needs to be known because he’s dangerous to the ones he’s supposed to defend.

Lt. Col. Bateman sullies the Army and its proud history of leaders such as Patton and MacArthur.

Bitter Clinger on December 8, 2013 at 3:28 PM

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. He is not entitled to pursue his on the taxpayers’ dime.

eon on December 8, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Sorry, as far as I’m concerned, he has violated his oath of office. It’s one thing to be a federal worker and run businesses or websites on the side, like that DHS guy who advocates the violent killing of whites. This guy should not be entrusted with our nation’s defense and he certainly should not be holding any sort of security clearance (basically making him unemployed as an Army officer).

Happy Nomad on December 8, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Funny how EVERY other amendment in the Bill of Rights protects the individual from encroachments by the government yet, according to Bateman and his ilk, the 2nd expands government power by keeping firearms away from citizens.

Bitter Clinger on December 8, 2013 at 3:32 PM

Correct me if I’m wrong( since it’s been many years and beers since I wore a uniform) but isn’t it frowned on for a active duty officer to make such a political statement while using his rank?

warren on December 8, 2013 at 2:25 PM

Normally – and according to regulations and tradition – yes.

Unless…the powers that be approve of your message…

…or if the powers that be directed you to write the message.

And, since the swine’s message is completely in keeping with that of the current regime, it is probably a combination of the two.

Either way, bateman is stupid, an idiot and a traitor…both to his oath and to America.

Solaratov on December 8, 2013 at 3:32 PM

eon on December 8, 2013 at 3:18 PM

Agree! He has a right to his opinion (despite his obvious disdain for the Constitution). But not a right to use his position in the Army to promote it.

tngmv on December 8, 2013 at 3:32 PM

So this military man has breached his oath of office, and should be dishonorably discharged with extreme haste.

Happy Nomad on December 8, 2013 at 3:34 PM

Sheesh.

The ONLY Amendment that contains the phrase “Shall not be infringed” is the Second.

I recommend, then, following his logic that all the Press from now on has to be cranked out on a hand press. No machine. No radio. No TV.

And soldiers restricted to horses.

You know the drill…extend their analogy and gore their favorite bull.

But then, most leftists are like that. Especially when they’re wrong.

Solaratov on December 8, 2013 at 3:44 PM

You can no longer trust the military to defend our rights and freedoms.

Thanks Republicans for making this a fact, rather than something to feared happening in the future. Yes, I blame the Republicans, because we never could trust the Democrats to keep this from happening, and it is the Republicans who claim to defend the Constitution that are always bending over backwards to enable the Democrats. Remember when the Tea Party ushered in a brand new Republican Majority House in 2010? Remember how the Republicans acted between that election and the new congress taking over? Yup, one of the most regressive active lame duck session in the history of this nation. More legislation got accomplished in that lame duck session of two months length, DURING HOLIDAYS no less, than happened in the entire 2 prior years. ALL OF IT BENEFITING the regressive Democrats and all enabled by Republicans bending over and taking it up the backside with pleasure.

Obama has been replacing our military leaders with no pushback at all from Republicans…

nonpartisan on December 8, 2013 at 3:41 PM

Actually, how many 2nd graders need to die before the anti-gun nuts realize that the only thing that stops a crazy person is someone better armed than the crazy person. Guns or no guns, there are still going to be crazy people out to kill 2nd graders.
Having guns in the hands of law abiding citizens prevents crime, it does not promote it. Every single place were citizens legally carry is safer than it otherwise would be. Every single time there has been a mass shooting, it has been were citizens are barred from carrying guns.
Keep your delusions. You will still never win the argument.

astonerii on December 8, 2013 at 3:47 PM

.
. EDIT ALERT
.
Lt. Col. Bateman is a Lieutenant Colonel (O-5), not a full Colonel (O-6)
.
Thus, the proper rank abbreviation is either Lt. Col. or LTC.
.
Please edit accordingly.
.
.
.
FWIW, Bateman displays the characteristic wood of someone who really, REALLY wants to wear the pants with twin pipes on the leg, not just one, and will DO. WHAT. IT. TAKES. to get that promotion.
.
Fine, make him earn it … don’t just give it to him.
.

Arbalest on December 8, 2013 at 3:48 PM

Screw this jerk . . . he’s just looking for attention. The military is only a reflection of society and has its share of moronic kooks.

rplat on December 8, 2013 at 3:49 PM

When you live in a country where only the police and the military have guns, that’s called a Police State. This gentleman who has taken an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States, has absolutely no idea what the Constitution even is. He’s in the US Army and is OK with a Police State in the US.

His superiors need to educate him on the Bill of Rights. Maybe by making him a Captain?

Wow, so much stupidity in one short post.
As long as we seem to want to claim that our government is OUR government to control, we need the right to determine it’s path, and when the government decides it no longer needs the consent of the governed to control the governed, then WE need the 2nd Amendment. YOU, sir are the anachronism here.

john1schn on December 8, 2013 at 3:52 PM

What guns?
I don’t believe in gun registration. It’s my right to own guns (or not). It’s not govt’s business to track my gun ownership.

Private ownership is the keystone of freedom. Ownership implies I have control over my assets and what I choose to do with them. If I choose to use my laptop as a flyswatter or my shotgun as a pool cue, I will.

Any guns they think I have, were stolen. If asked, it’s my prerogative not to file a report. I don’t have to file a report when my television set dies or is stolen.

I’m a peaceful guy, but can only be bent so far.
