Hill staffers hit errors galore as they try to sign up for ObamaCare

posted at 8:15 pm on December 6, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, Hill staffers!

Capitol Hill staffers are hitting multiple obstacles in trying to enroll in the Obamacare exchange just days before the federal government’s deadline for getting coverage.

They and lawmakers have until Monday to sign up on DC Health Link, the District’s insurance exchange, if they want to maintain the government’s generous employer contribution to their health insurance.

But as crunch time approaches, Democratic and Republican staffers are getting error messages, denials, notices that they’re enrolled in multiple plans and incomplete confirmation — as well as a website that went down briefly Thursday.

Officials at DC Health Link say that they are working quickly to fix each problem. But the snags are causing a lot of frustration and grief.

I feel for anyone who has to go through this process who didn’t have a direct hand in passing this thing. As for the true believers, it is quite useful to have them experience exactly what the rest of America is going through. And, this is what that looks like:

wpid-Screen-Shot-2013-12-06-at-9.16.25-AM

We are in the best of hands.

Rep. John Boehner’s journey through the system has been well documented. It took him 3-4 hours to find out his premiums will double and his co-pays and deductible tripled.

“I’m thrilled to death, as you can tell.”

An amendment to the Affordable Care Act required federal lawmakers and their personal staff to forfeit their government-sponsored health care plans and enroll in state-based insurance exchanges. The goal was to make lawmakers experience what many Americans face in the individual marketplace.

But with the enrollment deadline looming, the complaints are growing louder — and are aimed particularly at the D.C. small-business exchange that members of Congress are supposed to enroll in.

The D.C. exchange’s log-in tool experienced technical difficulties Thursday morning.

“Sigh. I was just in the middle of signing up,” the chief of staff for Sen. Marco Rubio, Florida Republican, tweeted in response to an internal Senate email about the hiccup.

Sen. Ted Cruz’s speechwriter and communications adviser Amanda Carpenter has also been tweeting her experiences. She went to a physical DC Health Link help line offered for staffers after her first online attempt failed.

There was no one there:

The metaphor is apt but that doesn’t make it fun for Amanda, who would like to stay insured. How long before Obama decides he can waive this part of the law?

“Your session got expired.”

The law is demanding that people give the very most sensitive of their personal information to a website that tells you that your session got expired. Not a high level of confidence in that.

The list of those without waivers or exemptions is rapidly growing shorter than the list of those who have waivers or exemptions.

When, after all the waivers and extensions have been handed out and pocketed, does this law qualify as discriminatory practices perpetrated against a minority of citizens?

Yeah, my insurance agent is having explosive arguments with the folks over at HealthCare.gov…..
His job is being threatened. He said when his corporate clients start getting into this next year he
is not sure what will happen. All of the folks like me that had individual policies with him that were canceled are pretty pissed off…..it’s costing more and the process is uncertain. Many of us are wondering how long and if we will be covered before the system blows.

Really? Who ‘expired’ it?

If the session simply exceeded a preset time limit, shouldn’t that read “Your session has expired.” ?

Enrollment Errors Put Medical Coverage at Risk

The Obama administration said Friday that the enrollment records for roughly a quarter of all the people who signed up for health insurance on its website in October and November could contain errors, raising questions about whether those consumers would get coverage in time to pay for their medical care next month.

Even now, the administration said, it may be sending incomplete or erroneous information to insurers for one in every 10 people who enroll.

In some cases, the government did not notify insurers of people who enrolled online at HealthCare.gov. The government refers to these people as orphans because they completed the application process and selected health plans, but the information did not make its way to insurers.

An administration official said the government would do everything possible to “rescue the orphans.”

Why does any healthy person want to stay insured? There’s no such thing as insurance anymore. Just wait until you get seriously ill, then sign up. It’s legal, it makes perfect sense, economically, and best of all, it’ll help to crash the whole system.

I think it’s just poor grammar, however. What else would one expect in DC, with one of the worst education records in the country, thanks to Obama killing their voucher program, while his own kids attend one of the most exclusive private schools in the country.

Actually, that is a bit of myth as the only time you can apply is during open enrollment periods. But to that point, I encourage those with no pre-existing conditions to simply put together a decent accident policy and a critical illness policy. Those two should have interim coverage to get you to the next open enrollment period. Pay the discounted penalty the first year. Wolah, saved yourself a few grand.

So it’s okay that a government website uses poor grammar?

The only cool thing about this is that all those staffers for Congresscritters, who are college educated, have to obey the law enacted by their bosses and provide all their personal information to a website that informs them that their session “got expired.”

APACHEWHOKNOWS on December 6, 2013 at 8:52 PM

Nope, that was a Republican administration. All of this Obamacare crap rewards Obama donors.

But let me add that the excess back in the 1980s was over-stated. Along with toilet seats and screwdrivers one of the common complaints was the cost of coffee makers. But when you peeled back the details you would find that the DoD wanted a coffee maker so robust that it would still be brewing joe for folks that came to pick up the pieces of the aircraft that had disintegrated around it.

Best one I remember was a program that turned out coffee makers for about $5000. The special feature was that these coffee makers would not spill even during inverted flight. Prevents all kinds of spills during air maneuvers.

Only problem was that they were designed for the P-3 Orion anti-submarine aircraft. If a P-3 ever flys inverted, he’s looking at the sub from below. (P-3 can’t invert, it crashes.)

Precisely. Why should anyone buy overpriced, unnecessary insurance before they develop a serious or significant health problem? Just pay-as-you-go then buy insurance when and if you become seriously ill . . . they can’t turn you down for a pre-existing condition and if your relatively young you’ll save a lot of money.
