Chris Matthews on his Obama interview: “He came to us. He came amongst us.”

posted at 10:11 pm on December 5, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

And, lo, the president came upon them, and the glory of the president shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

As for the interview itself, it was “extraordinary,” according to other MSNBC contributors.

It includes such insights as Joe Biden will go down in history as one of the greatest veeps of all time. And, the real problem with the media is that it puts far too little faith and focus on government’s awesome successes.

And, because it’s hard to keep up with all of Matthews’ inane utterances, we missed this stunner from “Morning Joe” today:

Matthews was on “Morning Joe” this morning to promote his interview with President Obama when he launched into a rant.

Obama “has had a very difficult opposition out there … who from the very beginning wanted to destroy this presidency,” he said. “And some of it is ethnic, and some is good old ideology. But they way they treated this guy is unusual in our history.”

“Al Gore accepted the fact, even though he won by 600,000 votes, that W. was president. And the Democrats accepted the legitimacy of George W. Bush 100 percent,” he added, when host Joe Scarborough tried to push back a bit.

“There is an asymmetry here between the hard right and the Democratic center, there is a real asymmetry, Joe,” he continued. “There really is. And to say that they are both the same is not true.”

Like most liberals you live in a fantasy world. Not only have you not bested RWM in a conversation here, you’ve bested no one here. The newest, least informed conservative commenter here on Hot Air is like a walking encyclopedia compared to you. You’re a shill and a sycophant with nothing but your opinion to offer as your proof to anything you claim here. That you would assert that you’re ready to take the gloves off with RWM is tantamount to a drunk at a bar trying to pull themselves up off the floor to have one more go at the big sober guy who has already knocked them down three or four times. You know nothing. To steal a line from a movie, we’re all stupider for having had to read what you write here. Every time you offer a comment, our collective IQs drop in an exact proportion to the length of your comment.

You’re the president of the Liberal Moron Club here on Hot Air and even your members are smarter than you. At least some of the others have read biased liberal sources and offer them as proof of what they claim. They at least have skewed liberal media articles they link to you. You do nothing but type. I half imagine before you type a single word on your computer directed at us you hit yourself in the forehead with a bat several times to insure maximum incolherence.

For greasy, homoerotic, press-Zero-fellating, this is the high water mark. It cannot be outdone without actually reaching across, pulling out the royal penis, and sucking on it on live TV. Which means –

It’s all downhill from here. The press has now officially done EVERYTHING it can to prop up its demiurge. If this doesn’t save him, the wad is officially shot.

It had to happen.

Dirty Creature on December 6, 2013 at 8:54 AM

Matthews is a joke.

But this:

When Mandela was imprisoned and struggling to end apartheid, the Republican Party — through the policies of the Reagan administration and the work of party activists — opposed U.S. sanctions against the white supremacist regime. Though they didn’t support apartheid by any means, they turned a blind eye towards the cruelty of the system and failed to support Mandela in his time of greatest need. Today, Republicans will cheer on Mandela, but the Republican Party’s historical relationship with South Africa, and Mandela in particular, exposes a sad chapter in the history of the American right.

lostmotherland on December 6, 2013 at 8:54 AM

Chris Matthews on his Obama interview: “He came to us. He came amongst us.”

Seriously, if he said that, he needs to be off the air, now.

Religious fanaticism and delusional cultism are never funny. If Matthews thinks this is an appropriate way to relate to an elected official, he’s in the wrong business.

Rhetoric like that belongs at an ashram on Big Sur in the Seventies, not passing itself off as “journalism”.

Get Matthews a robe and some sandals, and find him a guru he can worship with glazed eyes and a vacant expression. It seems to be about what he’s adapted for mentally.

(Sending NP with him is optional, but I wouldn’t object. Unlike others here, I fail to see the humor in the latter.)

um, even most conservatives would acknowledge that Obama is one of the most gifted speakers of recent memory

nonpartisan on December 5, 2013 at 10:41 PM

Again, I ask, as I have done on this site and other sites for the past 5 years every time someone makes this claim:

1) Cite me something memorable Obama has said that will be remembered in 20 years.

2) cite me something Obama has said that is a new thought.

3) Cite me something Obama has said that is unique.

Obama has above-average delivery when speaking from a teleprompter. However, the language employed is not memorable. There is no phrasing in anything that Obama says that is unique, new or poetic. He has no great quotes that will be remembered 6 months after any speech he gave, let alone 5, 10 or 100 years from now.

And, the substance of what he says is average and pedestrian at best. He says no new thoughts. He does not describe anything in a new or unique way. He does not have new ideas or even new ways of phrasing old ideas.

This liberal claim that Obama is a great speaker is an assertion without a basis. He gives decent delivery of utterly forgettable and cliched speeches.

the only quote he gave that is memorable is “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan” and that is only memorable because it was such a blatant lie.

So, what is your basis for claiming he is a great speaker. And don’t just give assertions, give analysis with cites to actual words Obama uttered. You won’t do it because it can’t be done.

Dishonesty, what else is new.

All conservatives must face the liberal press on a daily basis. Because 90% of the press is liberal.

but, honest discussion is, as always, impossible with a liberal. You can’t be honest because you are so wrong on every issue. That is why every thing you type is a lie.

But in different ways to different people.

See, “sock puppets for Jesus” is admirable if you are a worshiper of Jesus. So my laughter isn’t scorn, like yours must be.

“Sock puppets for Obama” is not even a comparison, since the Narcissist-in-Chief doesn’t even proclaim himself to be any more of a deity than most ego-centrists do. Why worship someone who loads you up with guilt, won’t promise you eternal life like most religious figures do, and can’t keep the promise he has already given you? He gave you a free phone and Food Stamps, but he hasn’t cooled the earth, made oil out of algae, or forced another human to care for your health.

So how do you compare yourself with KJ?

Your link actually made KJ’s point. You may think your reference was spot-on, but it was spot-on-you.

Only a fool would compare Jesus and Obama, and almost as big a fool would compare Jesus’ disciples with Obama’s.

There is nothing about you extremists on the left that is rational or fair minded.. nothing.. You repeat the same tired lies over and over..

After McGovern,.. the democrat party became the party of raging nutjobs.. working hand in glove with their media arm to portray the right as “extreme”.. when we’re merely mainstream.. in every poll ever taken, conservatives outnumber self admitted progressives two to one..

and you still claim 20% isn’t fringe..

The media outside FOX is just as bad, you live in deep blue cities, surrounded by like minded self re-enforcing liberal ideologues, where stepping outside the fence gets you ostracized and fired.. your bubble is so thick now.. liberals have convinced themselves that most people think like you…

the biggest deception of all..

When conservative talk-show people introduce their questions to GOP officials with “What would you say to those of us who say….”, you should perk up: criticism is implied, even if not always expressed personally.

Even with a soft edge, it is still far tougher criticism than libs endure from libs.

Yet ALL the conservative talkers do it.

Dems will not tolerate criticism from their questioners, soft or other.

Chrissy used to be tough, as was Charlie Rose. Not anymore.

Obama has lowered those expectations, too.

Compared to anyone in the media… interviewing Obama?

You actually think any of these drooling fanboy media hacks are tough on Obama?

ever?

They have NEVER displayed any doubts about a thing he says, and never will.. They know he lies to their faces, and they let it slide.. every time.

Imagine a GOP president ever getting that same free pass from CBS NBC ABC…

so it’s obvious you’re on drugs.. if you think an interview long session of royal @ss kissing by Matthews is in any way comparable to the way we treat our own.. Hannity is partisan.. not stupid like Matthews.. and he knows his audience has no trust left in the rino establishment, and that skepticism shows..

which you would know, if you ever watched him..

instead of relying on ignorant stereotypes.

rwenger43 on December 6, 2013 at 10:16 AM

The media itself admits how hostile this president is to ANY criticism, that they retaliate, “punish” impudent outlets… they with hold access, use the IRS.. the DOD to steal your files..

and they just roll over…

You’d think wrecking press freedom would anger even them.. but it doesn’t.. So desperately scared the liberals will slap the racist sticker on them, they can’t even ask Obama why he’s proven the single most divisive president in history… then ram it in his face when he claims it’s racism, with the proof it’;s never been about race.. but about the lunatic fringe ideology that he embraces.. Like socialism.. Critical Race Theory, Liberation Theology.. and every other debunked and discredited “theory” he’s adopted..

He’s not even very bright,.. Jarret says he’s “never been intellectually challenged”… a lot like saying Forest Gump has never been intellectually challenged, because he’s never understood the questions or ideals. Obama made up his mind in 1978 and hasn’t let a new thought in since..

Not the mind of a thinking man, just the musings of a party apparatchik..

mark81150 on December 6, 2013 at 10:26 AM

verbaluce on December 6, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Like always, dishonest.

I never said Hannity was a journalist and I certainly don’t consider him a journalist. I said he is tougher on republicans than most liberal/mainstream press are on liberals.

And that is true.

You are dishonest. You never honestly acknowledge conservative positions or arguments, preferring instead to always construct straw men; you never honestly discuss facts and you never honestly put forth what the liberal position is, instead swinging wildly between whatever claim du jour you believe helps.

You are dishonest through and through. And, again, that is because your ideology requires it. If you were honest about anything, you could not make an argument. For instance, it is impossible to honestly argue 0 because math does not allow it – that expanding medical coverage will cost less and not require some rationing. And yet your routinely made those claims, because your ideology requires it. If your ideology allowed you to be honest, you would have argued “yes of course costs will go up as we cover absolutely everyone for everything, and of course access to care will decrease to some extent, but then everyone will have health care.”

Of course, your ideology doesn’t allow honesty so you, and all other liberals, argued against reality that costs would go down and access would not be affected whatsoever.

And that is just one quick example. Your ideology is littered with them.

As for Matthews – I don’t expect Matthews to ask tough questions of Obama, just as I don’t expect anyone from ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN to ask tough questions of any liberal. That isn’t the point. but, of course you realize this – as always you argue dishonestly.

Instead of saying “yes, Matthews is a clown and his treating Obama like a messiah is ridiculous” you have to come on here and say “wow, it’s absurd that you make fun of Matthews, you must all be really angry”. And then follow it up with “hey, Matthews may be a clown, but look at Hannity (who, by the way, has never come close to acting like the idiot Matthews does toward Obama).

And I say that disliking Hannity immensely. I don’t think Hannity is particularly bright or entertaining. But, he is not remotely the clown that Matthews is.

rwenger43 on December 6, 2013 at 10:16 AM

It’s ignorant to suggest this is Obama’s doing.
For better or worse, we live in world of 24/7 hyper media.
Candidates and politicians of all stripes have plenty of options to get their messages out…and social media is changing that too.
Add to that the fact that various ‘news’ outlets feel they must target and appeal to a particular politically, socially, and economically minded audience. The result is MSNBC, Fox News, Matthews, Hannity, etc. The fact that you and others blame Obama for this is merely another result.
Remember how crafty the Reagan amin was in using cable news?
Or how George Bush utilized Twitter and Facebook to get his talking points distributed?
Exactly.

The proper prism to view this event is the following: Under any normal circumstances, even Zero would have had more dignity than to go to someone as sure to utterly lick his nads as Matthews. It just plain looks bad. It looks desperate. It’s the lowest of low hanging fruit.

That he stooped to that just to get a safe interview means that, even in today’s press, there was nobody else that was enough of a sure thing. Think about it.

That says that even Cpt. B+ knows he’s finally on the rocks.

No, actually it does not. Quite aside from being a very unusual usage, saying he is “not above” implies that he is not a part of the group “average Americans”. It’s similar to misusing ‘but’ and ‘and’ for similar or opposing thoughts. The syntax is okay (and nobody always using perfect syntax) but the meaning is nonsense.
