White House ready to go on offense over ObamaCare or something

posted at 11:21 am on December 3, 2013 by Allahpundit

The short version:

The long version:

“To kick off the new effort, the President will hold an event at the White House to discuss the health care law’s benefits already in place for millions of Americans and make the case for why we need to move forward to make sure the law is a success.”

The first event is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, but it is just the first wave in a tsunami of information the Obama administration plans to unleash.

This will be a daily event through December 23 as the White House plans to highlight benefits of the Affordable Care Act — sometimes on its own and other times with the help of supporters of the reform package.

The offensive is a sign the White House no longer feels weighed down by the problem-plagued HealthCare.gov.

That can’t be true, even in a White House as willfully blind to the website’s problems as the one that greenlit this Chernobyl for an October 1st launch. Take a gander at our Headlines section this morning. Garbled data, phantom enrollments, massive security problems — all of it conspiring to potentially destabilize insurers, which has credit agencies worried and murmurs about the coming federal mini-bailout growing louder. Unless HHS has reason to believe the site is now more stable than anyone else knows, they’re taking two huge risks by launching a PR campaign. One is the risk of people swarming to the site to enroll and crashing it, something they feared so much as recently as last week that they encouraged liberal nonprofits not to launch any PR campaigns of their own. The other risk, paradoxically, is that the site won’t crash and insurers will be inundated with new applications that they either can’t process, because the information’s too mangled to decipher, or won’t process because there’s currently no way for applicants to pay their first month’s premium through the website. What’s changed to make the White House think that drumming up interest in enrolling in the home stretch before the December 23rd deadline is worth those risks?

Maybe nothing. Maybe this is all just a form of political disaster management:

The focus on Obamacare benefits is a political necessity for congressional Democrats, the large majority of whom will face voters in less than a year. Democrats wrote and passed the law in the face of unified Republican opposition, and if voters aren’t aware of the law’s upside — or can’t remember it amid all the problems with the rollout — Democrats will be holding onto an anchor rather than a buoy.

Democrats in the White House and on Capitol Hill say that in order to get back on offense on Obamacare, they have to draw a two-sided picture: Democrats delivering benefits on one side, and Republicans trying to deny them on the other. That, one party operative said, is what polling says will help them win. Instead, Democrats have spent the past two months blaming a president of their own party for the deficiencies of a law that they own.

If they know that the next eight weeks, at least, will be filled with more ObamaCare landmines exploding — and they will be — then they’ve got three options. They can stand around waiting for them to go off and then hem and haw their way through the wreckage when they do. They can try to change the subject to some other area of policy, like Iran, and hope somehow that the media remains fixated on it hour-by-hour until, er, February. Or they can swallow hard and try to defend the law, if only to force reporters to squeeze a little “ObamaCare has good intentions” pap into news stories about people suffering lapses in their coverage next month because they can’t get the farking website to work or can’t afford their new premiums. Stay the course, in other words. It’ll all pay off eventually! — even if “eventually” means 2017 or later. “[V]oters will grasp that one side is trying to solve our health care problems,” insists Greg Sargent, “while the other is trying to sabotage all solutions while advancing no constructive answers of their own.” Will they, though? I usually stay away from ObamaCare/Iraq analogies, but I’m thinking a big “well, what would you do about Saddam?” campaign by the GOP in 2006 wouldn’t have done much to hold back the Democratic wave in November. If you screw up so badly that the public comes to believe you’ve made an already bad situation worse with your “fix,” blaming the other party for obstruction won’t help you. Democrats are betting, I guess, that this new PR push will help convince people that O-Care hasn’t made things worse, but if you can remember another instance of an Obama publicity campaign succeeding, let me know.

As for what this means for the site’s functionality — more people logging on, more load on the site, more chaos for insurers in trying to make sense of the 834 data — I think the real significance of today’s PR push is that the White House apparently seems resigned to that happening anyway. If you can’t prevent a big technological mess from happening next month, might as well do some political triage even if it means making the mess a little bigger. The next year is going to be a ceaseless balancing act between those two priorities, fixing the law as best they can for awhile and then shifting to PR to buy a little more time with the public while the remaining technical problems compound. Gonna be a long 12 months.

Update: Indeed:

Again, no matter. The crisis that these errors will create in January is January’s problem. Today’s crisis, one of internal cohesion within the Democratic Party, is more acute. The left demands that caution be abandoned in favor of a hollow display of force.

These panic-inspired offensive operations against ACA opponents are not designed to achieve any strategic objective. They are politically inspired and are aimed at achieving a political goal. Each has had the temporary effect of increasing Democratic unity, but the president cannot overcome the static conditions of the terrain on which they are fighting. The underlying problems associated with the ACA are fracturing the Democratic Party. So long as the ACA remains unreformed, the Democrats are in a losing position.

Apparently the only thing they have left is a full blown propaganda campaign, and it has already started. Leftists everywhere are already wearing fake smiles and talking about how the whole thing has turned the corner. I guess they’ve decided their only option is to drink, be merry, and enjoy the band as the Titanic sinks.

At some point the whole charade implodes, though. You can’t pretend you aren’t drowning when the water is over your head. Come January Democrats will be scrambling to exchange this super awesome gift called ObamaCare.

Until unions decouple themselves from democrat orthodoxy they are the enemy as defined by Precedent Obama. And yes, I’m very glad to see Detroit can proceed with the bankruptcy. The municipal unions down here control every seat on their boards and those folks are in bed with our big city administrations who have all created the pension mess of their own doing. They are broke and need to be eliminated.

Other than doubling down, what other choice does the lazy shiftless rat have? After three years promising quality affordable healthcare to all, Congressional Dems lacing up their track shoes and getting ready to bolt, and the debacle that is the website……. What other choice does the bastard have?

IMO, they are banking on the idea that they’ll be home free if they get through the next few months will BS campaigns like this month’s parasite of the day feature. I think that is optimistic. And for that we get to enjoy a higher deductible, higher out-of-pocket, higher maximum, and a 10% higher co-insurance until we reach that maximum.

Of course, I absolutely expected this but still – thanks a lot for nothing, chump.

This is Obama’s ego, pure and simple. He simply cannot admit that people aren’t buying into the Soviet-style propaganda anymore, that they’ve seen this with their own eyes and don’t like it, so he naturally falls back on more propaganda. It’s remarkable. Obamacare has become a national punchline, and it will only get worse as more people are kicked off plans and forced to pay more for less. Yet, he’s bought into his own press in thinking yet another meandering, staged speech will fix everything. It’s the legislation, stupid.

What’s changed to make the White House think that drumming up interest in enrolling in the home stretch before the December 23rd deadline is worth those risks?

When has this Indonesian White House ever worried about any risks? They don’t care what happens. They don’t care if the site ends up electrocuting people trying to log onto it. They’ll just “pivot to the economy” again and pretend that nothing is wrong.

After 5 years of this BS – day after day after day – how is it that you still don’t really get it? Barky doesn’t care about any of this stuff and doesn’t care how poorly anything works (if it works, at all) or how incompetent he looks. All he has to do is scream “raaacist!!” (along with his MSM brownshirts) and wait a few days for some other major disaster to divert people’s attention. In the meantime, he just lies and says whatever he wants to say. Baghdad Bob had nothing on Barky and his junta.

They made it through Benghazi, Fast&Furious, 9/11 part II, Peregruzka!!, the Gulf oil spill that they helped make as bad as possible and screwed up in every way, … and people immediately forgot as the next disaster appeared. Barky even got re-elected in the face of the most retarded, inept, incompetent, anti-American insanity that the nation (that used to be America) had ever seen, or even caught wind of.

Barky doesn’t care about anything. If he doesn’t like something he just lies about it. Transparent, outright, intellectually offensive lies that not even an 8 year old would believe. And he gets away with it. So, why would you think he or his junta is worried about any “risks”? Risks to what? LOL.

Policy? The lazy shiftless bastard isn’t selling policy. He’s pushing his agenda and thinks that he can shift public opinion by those speeches. It didn’t work for amnesty (he ended up doing an EO to pander to Latinos). It didn’t work for the gays and their demands (DADT repealed by EO). It certainly didn’t work for gun control (rejected by Congress).

Up until now, the only glimmer of success was selling Obamacare. But, of course, the Obamacare he was selling only shares a name with the one that is being forced on Americans now. It was the typical bait and switch. We can’t keep our plans. We can’t keep our doctors. And I have heard of no family saving over $2500/year on healthcare costs.

Tsar of Earth on December 3, 2013 at 12:11 PM

An ideologue is defined as 1) an impractical idealist; 2) an often blindly partisan advocate or adherent of a particular ideology.

Barack Obama insists that he is not an ideologue. Yet, all of his actions belie those words and demonstrate clearly that he is an ideologue zealously fixated, not on addressing the healthcare challenges we have, but on the government’s seizure of 1/6th of the national economy regardless of the havoc that is being done.

He’s doggedly pushing through what amounts to the destruction of our healthcare industry, including coverages for over 100 million Americans, all in the so-called name of benefiting about 15 million ‘uninsured’ – most of whom are uninsured by choice.

The EpicClusterFarkNado is such that it can’t be spun via just another campaign-style PR campaign. Obama’s quite overrated as an orator (but not bad at reading a teleprompter) – and even in his legend in his own mind status, he can’t sell as viable the EpicClusterFarkNado.

The bill might have been rammed through Congress, but in a world where the laws of economics and human nature are inviolable, sheer force of ideological rhetoric cannot ram this POS into relevancy or success.

Athos on December 3, 2013 at 12:11 PM

Obama will never, ever back off from ObamaCare, even if it ends up destroying the country, because it would be too humiliating for him, which is something he can’t stand. Me, I don’t care either way if Obama is humiliated. It gives me no satisfaction. My point is, he’ll hurt the country to protect his own pride. Pause to let that understanding sink in. It’s true, you know it’s true.

… I’m starting to believe that Chief Justice Roberts is smarter than we ever gave him credit. If his objective was to bring 0bama and the Democratic party to their knees, for generations to come, his scheme is working brilliantly (although it is pretty painful for the American people).

The Schadenfreude is delicious to watch.

UltimateBob on December 3, 2013 at 12:07 PM

It’s not his “brilliance” at all. I hate the man more than obama, for not being one, in spite of this.

Too many will suffer and die, even if he’d ever right what he so wronged.

p.s. you owe me royalties …but for friends it’s gratis :)

Schadenfreude on December 3, 2013 at 12:14 PM

I’m starting to believe that Chief Justice Roberts is smarter than we ever gave him credit. If his objective was to bring 0bama and the Democratic party to their knees, for generations to come, his scheme is working brilliantly (although it is pretty painful for the American people).

UltimateBob on December 3, 2013 at 12:07 PM

Not even close. Benedict Roberts is nothing but a lowlife, moronic, traitorous douchebag who tore the Constitution to shreds, along with the underlying English language it’s built on. There are no explanations for what the despicable POS did other than he’s lowlife scumbag who helped put the final nail in America’s coffin. “Smart” and “Benedict Roberts” should never appear in the same sentence, Neither should “American” and “Benedict Roberts”.

ObamaScare was clearly un-Constitutional. The mandate penalty clearly was not a “tax”, and, “taxes” on inaction are clearly not part of the historic definition in our English. And that idiocy was all compounded by the lowlife Roberts declaring the mandate penalty definitely NOT to be a tax in order to hear the case and then declaring it was a tax in order to decide it – both in direct opposition to how Barky’s imbecilic lawyers were even arguing their side.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on December 3, 2013 at 12:14 PM

The Republicans should help with this. There should be a massive effort to make the public aware that the web-site is open and ready for business. The Republicans should also do as much as possible to show how affordable the rates and deductibles are. Also they should do what they can to let the public know to be patient, as the payment and info reconciliation gateway hasn’t yet been built, so you really don’t have any friggin’ insurance in the first place.

oldroy on December 3, 2013 at 12:16 PM

I find Obama and his Stan-run Healthcare System very offensive.

kingsjester on December 3, 2013 at 12:17 PM

State-run.

kingsjester on December 3, 2013 at 12:17 PM

obama used the word “lies” in his run. Play them back every time someone says “one should not use “lies” with the presidency”.

Schadenfreude on December 3, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Not only that, I’m tired of leftists telling me that I should “respect the office of the President” even if I don’t like 0bama.

This dishonest, bumbling stooge has proven time and again that he is not worthy of the smallest shred of dignity that the office holds. He has used State of the Union addresses to attack his political opponents, private citizens, and even the Supreme Court. He boasts that “I won” and feels that it’s not necessary to negotiate with Republicans. He has dissed our allies and given our adversaries everything they want and more. Etc, etc. You get my point.

0bama has NO class and deserves NO respect.

Spot on. Thanks for straightening me out.

Part of me just wants to believe that this whole debacle might have been by design. 0bama pushed 0bamacare, thinking that it wouldn’t get past the SCOTUS. Now that it has, it’s blowing up in his face.

0bama is being hoisted by his own petard.

Bob – you may be right. Your comment on pain to the people – well, it is well deserved. IIRC, Roberts stated that he isn’t “ruling on the ability of the American people to vote stupidly.” (quote may not be exact). The point is that he was making a ruling on law not the stupidity of the voters to elect scumbags who will leverage our earnings as a “tax”. However, he HAD to know somehow that this would collapse in on itself due to its shoddy workmanship. My gut tells me that no one knows this law better than SCOTUS because they all probably had to READ the entire thing in order to come to a judgement.

Oops! Sorrry……..it’s this one.

obama’s lies, documented

avagreen on December 3, 2013 at 12:45 PM

During the ‘Budget Battle’ (There has not been a budget since Harry Reid took over in the Senate / since the Democrats won a ‘super majority’ in the federal government – even with that ‘super majority’ they REFUSED to pass one) and the debt ceing increase battle, the GOP agreed to fund EVERY SINGLE PART of the Govt….except for Obamacare, which cotained over 20,000 violations to the US Constitution. (According to the Constitution every American must be treated equally – every one of those 20,000 waivers was/is a violation to the Constitution. The largest slap in the face was forcing Americans to pay 70% of the premiums of the liars & thieves in the federal govt that forced ‘Obamacare’ on them.

What did Obama do to get what he wanted? Obama inflicted as much pain on the American people he could in an attempt to force Americans to demand the GOP abandon the Constitution and give Obama whatever he wanted. He closed federal government-run parks and historic sites. He spent more money barracading war memorials and in hiring guards to keep vets from visiting THEIR open-air monuments than it would have cost to simply allow them to visit. Obama even ordered the closing of PRIVATELY OWNED parks and historical sites.

So does anyone really think for a second that this would-be TYRANT would hesitate for a second to ramp up the doling out of any amount of pain and punishment to Americans for daring to reject his health care bill and threaten to destroy it by not complying with the law and not buying it?

Wake up! Since before the ink was dry of Obama’s signature on the bill newly signed into law Obama began making changes to the law, a CRIME and VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, as pointed out by justice Kennedy, not only changed the government’s argument when the lone court case regarding this law so far was heard but he also RE-WROTE THE LAW…not once but TWICE! These actions were a VIOLATION OF THE CONSTITUTION’S SEPARATION OF POWERS. Since the only entity that can legally, Constitutionally alter a law once it has passed is Congress and since Obama has bypassed Congress every time he changes the law, Obamacare – legally & Constitutionally – no longer exists. Obamacare is alive, yet close to life support, as Obama CONTINUES to modify the bill in violation of the Constitution whenever he sees fit and/or needs to in order to keep it ‘alive’.

This whole ‘Obamacare’ chapter in American history should be a Constitutional Scholar’s (which Obama claims to be)/Professor’s DREAM to teach about in class, laughing over an over again as they do. A TRUE Constitutional Scholar could not teach about and DEFEND the actions Obama and Roberts have taken to keep the Obamacare law ‘alive’ with a straight face.

If a President attempted to convince you he can offer you a US-wide government-run program that would 1) Not cost a dime, 2) would pay for itself, 3) would lower the cost of health care, & 4) would REDUCE the deficit, which would be the 1st time in this nation’s 200+ year history, HE is an idiot.

This will be a daily event through December 23 as the White House plans to highlight benefits of the Affordable Care Act — sometimes on its own and other times with the help of supporters of the reform package.

Yay!!! Three weeks of a media feeding frenzy feel good party. Then Christmas vacation with visions of Obamacare dancing through their heads.

The more they build this up, the harder the fall will be in just a few short weeks. Already a disaster, this guy must believe that he can just speechify his way into Obamacare working. He must really believe this, there is no other explanation.
