Video: Sticker shock greets those who successfully navigate Healthcare.gov

posted at 12:01 pm on December 3, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

“Now that those glitches have been taken care of,” Newsnet 5′s Debora Lee reports, one Ohio woman finally went shopping for health insurance on Healthcare.gov — and wishes she hadn’t.  “I thought it was supposed to help,” Liz Binns told Lee, but now she asks, “How can I pay this kind of money out?”

Welcome to the (kinda) fully functional ObamaCare (via The Right Scoop):

Binns had been trying to navigate the government’s health care website since October to find affordable insurance for her husband, a 60-year-old who has a pre-existing condition and whose job doesn’t offer coverage.

What she finally found for him Monday carries a premium of more than $400 a month and a $5,000 annual deductible.

“How can I pay this kind of money out?” she asked. “It’s going to take at least a second job and praying that I would make enough on a second job just to pay for this health insurance.” …

“I thought this was going to be the miracle for us,” she said, “and it’s not.”

You don’t apply to governments for miracles, even though Barack Obama clearly needs one at this point more than ever.  He’s banking on making a few more speeches to distract everyone from the financial consequences of ObamaCare, but it doesn’t work when those consequences become personal and ongoing.  Every clinic visit that requires cash now rather than a co-pay because of increased deductibles, and every paycheck lowered because of premium increases, will remind the Binns and everyone else just how much they’re losing thanks to ObamaCare’s disruption of a market that had been largely functioning well for most Americans.  And when the fall of 2014 approaches, tens of millions more will find themselves tossed into the same position.

It’s not the website. The website has been a distraction for Americans.  It’s the bill coming due that Obama will have to explain … every day until the midterms.

I’m having a hard time feeling bad for this lady, when the USA has long been the last best place for medical care because the rest of the world has long been trotting ahead of it down the redistributionist/socialist healthcare model.

The facts were there for her and about 150 million other Americans, but they refused to see it. Miracle. Hah. If it sounds too good to be true, it always is.

Liberalism is warmed-up old ideas that have found wanting wherever they are tried.

portlandon on December 3, 2013 at 12:04 PM

Yes, whoever could have suspected that the government could not add tens of millions of uninsured individuals to the health care rolls, create dozens of new health care bureaucracies, impose multiple new fees, taxes, and regulations on health care providers and consumers, impose multiple new coverage mandates — while simultaneously reducing health care costs for the majority of Americans.

Next you’ll be telling me is that Santa isn’t real . . . .

It’s this kind of ingratitude that hurts the most. So what if her husband is 60-years-old and has a pre-existing condition. Doesn’t this stupid woman know that her husband is not covered for pap smears and maternity issues- including pre-natal care!!! And after spending $4800 for premiums and forking out $5000 in deductibles it will all be free for the rest of the year.

Put another way, how many couples in their 50s and 60s can’t afford $10,000 in healthcare a year? Somebody has to pay for Sandra Flukes birth control!

People haven’t learned to read the names of new laws carefully. The politicians usually tell us very clearly what the law will really do. Just read the title and assume it will do the exact opposite:

“Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act”

“Patient Protection” means no protection for patients

– loss of medical data privacy (unless it’s for AIDS or abortion, then it’s a secret.)
– loss of identity security on a website with no data protections
– loss of familiar doctors and health systems

“Affordable Care” means expenses everywhere

– premiums go up
– deductibles go up
– co-insurance goes up
– essentially just a tax to transfer wealth to Democrats’ favorite constituencies.

“Act” means it doesn’t actually do anything

– so badly built that all is chaos.

If it were up to the GOP, or rather Conservatives, Insurance would be factually affordable, medical care would be far less expensive, the requirements to become a doctor would be more appropriate, the amount of education to perform simple and easy medical tasks would be lower, and the chances of that man being a pre-existing condition without insurance rather than being an insured person would be lower, but at his own discretion.

But hey, lets make medical care cost more. So much more that liberals are now talking about pushing grandma off a cliff seriously. “Isn’t it time to just let the old people die?”

-You can’t keep your insurance if you like it.

-You can’t keep your doctor if you like him/her.

-You can’t use your policy to go to the top hospitals.

-The IPAB is a death panel. It, while being completely unaccountable to the voter / taxpayer, will ration care. People will die who could be saved because of decisions made by the IPAB.

-You will be paying substantially more for less coverage, fewer in network doctors and hospitals, and with more annual out-of-pocket costs…and despite this, the private insurance companies are going to be hammered with adverse risk related costs. And all of this will get worse each successive year.

-The cost of this EpicClusterFark to the taxpayer will soar each successive year, well above the $2.5T – $3T estimated for the next decade. Medicare / Medicaid will accelerate towards fiscal disaster and by 2017, we will see nearly 40% of the federal budget dedicated to healthcare.

Yeah, this is more than just a partially completed and dysfunctional website. But just as the EpicClusterFark was rammed through Congress, the same morons are going to try to ram this through reality regardless of the cost. The ends justifies the means.

Obama will never have to explain the bill. Exactly who will hold him accountable to explain? The MSM? Mitch McConnell? Republican leadership anywhere? Bwahahaha!!!

The Republicans refuse to fight. They’re part of the “Governing Class” with no incentive to create actual change.

Look to California for a glimpse of your future. Republican leadership gladly surrendered to a permanent minority status “to preserve what little we have.”

The Electorate’s too busy attempting to pay the bills both parties have dumped on them.

Obamacare’s here to stay. The Republican’s haven’t got the nerve, backbone or smarts to get it repealed – Even with a majority of in both the Senate and House with a Republican President. They’ll never “risk” it.

If you want change, get involved at your local precinct level with the expectation it will take 2 generations to turn America around.

Lesson for the rest of us: DO NOT check those three boxes on the application form.

Tsar of Earth on December 3, 2013 at 12:38 PM

Forgot the important ones…
Tax cheat in need of an audit.
Litterer in need of a fine.
Red light running speeder in need of ticketing.
No fly list applicant.

astonerii on December 3, 2013 at 12:50 PM

You trusted Obama…?

What a SAP!

Kuffar on December 3, 2013 at 12:50 PM

How do you think Ted Cruz became a Senator?
Gerrymandering.

lostmotherland on October 17, 2013 at 1:39 PM

puahahahahahaa!!!!! Damn you’re stupid!

jawkneemusic on December 3, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Thank you, Lord, for not making me stupid like you did the obamabots and LIVs.

MisterElephant on December 3, 2013 at 12:46 PM

The lord does not make people stupid. He gave them free will so they could choose to be stupid.
Of course, those people are at home relaxing right now while I am stuck at work where at an absolute minimum 25% of my labor gets siphoned off to let them be lazy good for nothing degenerate scum.

astonerii on December 3, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Let’s see… $4800 a year premiums and a $5000 deductable…

My advice – screw Obamacare save your $5000 pay the fine and if you do get sick, go to the hospital and demand to be cared for.

Send the bill to lostmother(f*ck*r)land

Kuffar on December 3, 2013 at 12:56 PM

You don’t apply to governments for miracles

Um, I think you’re forgetting that Øbama’s mere nomination was the day the waters began to recede and the planet began to heal. If those aren’t miracles, I don’t know what is.

Lostfu*kerland’s minions not as dumb as assumed.

Schadenfreude on December 3, 2013 at 1:01 PM

“I thought this was going to be the miracle for us,” she said, “and it’s not.”

And you thought it was hyperbole when we said some people worship Obama….

There Goes the Neighborhood on December 3, 2013 at 1:06 PM

What happened to that phony phrase,”bending the cost curve down”? One must assume that Obama meant to say, “get bent”.

Mason on December 3, 2013 at 1:06 PM

If it was up to the GOP she’d be even worse off. Pre-existing conditions? Too bad. What’s your plan? Oh right. You don’t have one.

lostmotherland on December 3, 2013 at 12:09 PM

A year from now, a lot of people won’t have a plan.

This is so true. I completely agree.

djl130 on December 3, 2013 at 1:08 PM

“I thought this was going to be the miracle for us,” she said, “and it’s not.”

The deal has been altered. You should pray it isn’t altered further.

BobMbx on December 3, 2013 at 1:08 PM

If people had been paying attention they would have known it was going to be like this before the bill was signed.

sadatoni on December 3, 2013 at 1:13 PM

If it was up to the GOP Tsarists she’d you farmer’s would be even worse off. What’s your 5 year plan? Oh right. You don’t have one. Only Stalin has one!

lostmotherland on December 3, 2013 at 12:09 PM

FIFY

questionmark on December 3, 2013 at 1:14 PM

She asked for a miracle from a fake jesus created by the lying msm. He was lying again, Liz, when he said premiums would go down by $2500, too. You will be able to find a policy for your husbands pre-existing condition but he didn’t promise that you could afford it. Oh, and you won’t be able to keep your doc, either. See this is how it works when govt controls your life.

Kissmygrits on December 3, 2013 at 1:15 PM

astonerii on December 3, 2013 at 12:53 PM

I wasn’t referring to the grifters and welfare-system gamers. I meant the average Joe who was so stupid as to place (or misplace) so much faith in a low-class, unknown, unaccomplished used car salesman to begin with. And not just once, but twice (2008 and 2012).

How do people get to be so stupid?

MisterElephant on December 3, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Story after story like this in the media…but never do I see or hear reported who they voted for in the last two elections…

PatriotRider on December 3, 2013 at 1:15 PM

lostmotherland on December 3, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Our plan was not to make things worse.

We win.

Chuck Schick on December 3, 2013 at 1:20 PM

“I thought this was going to be the miracle for us,” she said, “and it’s not.”

I’m sure she thought the same when she voted for her favorite Democrats too!

cajunpatriot on December 3, 2013 at 1:24 PM

“I thought this was going to be the miracle for us, and it’s not.”

I thought that my rainbow farting unicorn would have arrived by now, but it hasn’t.
