Dems wonder: Why hasn’t Obama fired his advisers yet?

posted at 10:41 am on December 2, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Good question, especially concerning those whose jobs revolve primarily around keeping the President informed.  President Barack Obama would be less knowledgeable about what happens in his own administration than most low-information voters if not for the fact that he watches cable-TV news, never knowing about the IRS targeting his political opponents or the fact that his centerpiece legislative achievement was being programmed on TRS-80s in Kathleen Sebelius’ garage … at least to hear Jay Carney explain the lack of executive competence in the White House. After a year full of embarrassing scandals and costly political blunders, The Hill reports that Democrats want heads to roll — now:

Former administration officials and Democratic operatives say President Obama is ill-served by his current White House staff and must reboot his second term team following the disastrous ObamaCare rollout.

First-term insiders argue the White House’s weakness was defined by a lack of preparedness, messaging blunders and failure to keep the president informed.

They say Obama’s team lacks depth after the departures of longtime advisers David Axelrod, David Plouffe, Robert Gibbs and Patrick Gaspard, and suggest new people must be brought on.

This gets to the point Robert Gibbs made earlier, which is that the White House has destroyed its own credibility.  That, however, isn’t a problem with Obama’s advisers but with Obama himself.  How many people lost their jobs over Benghazi over the false narrative that it was just a demonstration over a YouTube video, not to mention the lack of preparation for trouble on the 11th anniversary of 9/11? Zero. How many people got fired in the IRS scandal? None.  The same people who lied to Congress about the NSA’s activities are still in charge of them.

ObamaCare is a special case, though, because it is (a) paradigmatic for big-government advocates that central planning produces better results, and (b) it is entirely a self-imposed measure of political competence.  It took 44 months before the White House could claim that they have achieved “private sector velocity and effectiveness,” which as Chuck Todd notes is a perfect rebuttal to (a), and no one has gotten fired over the failures or the supposed lack of a heads-up to Obama, which answers (b), too. Failure in this White House has no consequences, which means that the same incompetents continue working on the same failures and keep producing the failures we have seen all year.

A competent executive would have made examples of a few people long ago as a message to the rest to improve their work.  The problem is that we don’t have competent executives in this administration, starting at the top.  Obama won legislative achievements in his first term without any operational success, which went unnoticed because either the metrics for success ended up being far too foggy (the 2009 stimulus package), or the delivery dates went too far in the future.  The lack of competence is so obvious now that a few firings probably won’t help matters; it will take a house-cleaning now to prop up Obama as an executive. If that doesn’t happen, Democrats will pay the price in 2014, and they know it.

Update: Ron Fournier concurs:

President Obama needs to fire himself. Not literally, of course, but practically: He needs to shake up his team so thoroughly that the new blood imposes change on how he manages the federal bureaucracy and leads.

A series of self-inflicted wounds during his fifth year in office, capped by the botched launch of the Affordable Care Act, have Americans questioning the president’s competence and credibility. History suggests the second-term presidents rarely recover after their approval ratings fall as much as Obama’s have this year.

History also suggests there are two types of White House shakeups. The first is mostly cosmetic and aimed at sending a signal that the president is serious. He fires somebody, anybody, as a sacrificial lamb. The second is deep cleansing – that rare occasion when a president rebuilds his team to change himself.

This is what Obama must do.

It’s notable that after the months-long series of blunders and scandals, we haven’t seen either version of a White House shake-up.

I think at this point they are screwed no matter what happens. If they fire someone that would be an admission of failure and this administration likes to pretend it’s beyond failure. No matter what happens it’s always someone else’s fault.

If anyone deserves to be fired in this administration’s opinion it would be the American people for “failing to understand” Obama’s supposed “brilliance”?

We are examining this the wrong way. The question shouldn’t be why no one is ever fired in this administration, but why does this administration reward incompetence. The answer is not comforting. The very few who have been fired were ultimately fired for insulting Obama or those closest to him. This is not an executive branch, but an banana republic bubble.

As long as you don’t go off the reservation and start criticizing the policy, you’re not going to be canned if you’re a higher-up, though Team Obama will throw as many lower level folks under the bus as they need to to keep deflecting blame from the supposed head guy.

Obama doesn’t care about these blunders!

He has expanded the welfare state, the EPA, the IRS, all agencies, and politicized the entire bureaucracy. He has succeeded with his soft revolution. To him, the economic problems are nothing compared to the goodies that his base is getting.

With his permanent dependent majority, and Eric Schmidt’s new progressive data mining operation, Obama’s people will rule from here on. Unless the good Lord still loves us.

It’s notable that after the months-long series of blunders and scandals, we haven’t seen either version of a White House shake-up.

And nobody is madder than Obama.

I think it a twofold problem for the lazy stupid one. First, fired people talk, which would probably shore up the evidence that the White House knew just how bad this roll out was going to be for months. They may not be lying when they say the website is night and day better now than it was in October but that only speaks to the darkness of the night and not the light of day.

Secondly, if you fire people over this, who is going to willingly step in to take charge. It’s like firing your contractor halfway through building a house and expecting a new contractor to fix all the problems and complete the job while taking full responsibilty for the outcome.

Happy Nomad on December 2, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Schadenfreude on December 2, 2013 at 10:44 AM

This is probably the closest reason to the truth. Most of Obama’s “advisors” were likely handpicked by Jarrett and Michelle, and without their permission, Obama won’t be firing anybody.

It’s also worth noting that Obama doesn’t CARE what the American people think. He’s just going to impose his will be decree instead of legislation if he can’t get Congress to cooperate. Congress has no stomach to check what is essentially dictatorial rule so “popularity” polls mean very little.

Even if Obama loses Congress and the Republicans take control of the Senate, so what? Is Mitch McConnell going to stop Obama from ruling by decree? Far from “elections having consequences,” I view them as being nearly meaningless since no amount of voting against Democrats seems to stop them.

Barack Obama has the team he wants. They are there because of their loyalty to him and their shared ideology. Furthermore, as an ideologue, Barack Obama, remains convinced that the his vision and direction is the only one that is correct. He is convinced that this is a broken, unfair, and unjust system in a broken, unfair, and unjust country.

Just as Alinsky, Ayers, Wright, Davis, Cloward / Piven, and other mentors have told him, in order to ‘fix’ the country, pain is necessary if the country is to be quickly moved onto the ‘right path’.

He will not change because of his hubris, arrogance, and narcissism. Those who are complaining are little more than annoyances, people who he holds in complete and utter contempt.

lea on December 2, 2013 at 12:18 PM

I worry that the emphasis on calling it “Obamacare” and on Obama’s massive failures in making it not happen, are letting the Democrats in the Congress and the Senate too much off the hook. Obama and his team were not deeply involved in the writing of the ACA, and the deepest problems with the act are in its inherent structure, and not with its implementation (for which Obama deserves to be pilloried.) It is a badly written law from start to finish, but Obama isn’t the one who wrote it.

Especially with mid-terms coming up, it is important to remember the members of the House and Senate who passed a bill without hearings, without proper debate, using unprecedented legislative maneuvers to pass it on a party line vote.

There is enough blame to go around. Do not let other Democrats hide behind the flaming wreckage of the law’s implementation.

HakerA on December 2, 2013 at 12:23 PM

This is beyond hilarious.

Obama is an incompetent, narcissistic imbecile who has never in his life had to answer for any mistake, bear the consequences of his decisions, or do much more than race-bait. He cannot fix the problem because he has no concept of what the problem is in the first place. He thinks it’s a “messaging” failure and that his Ministry of Propaganda is going to pull him out of it and paper it over like they have ever since his typical white grandmother purchased his grades and bought off the Hawai’i police to keep Prince Choom from being arrested.

There are no competent people in the Obama administration. Moreover, Obama is incapable of hiring competent people because he equates competence with dumb, blind loyalty. All one need do is look at Valerie Jarrett to recognize that; she worships Obama as a god, and everything she touches implodes as a result.

The media is pleading with Obama to save their own reputations at this point, to give them something, ANYTHING they can spin for their six-plus years of blind, stupid, racist loyalty and their attempts to pretend that black skin equals intelligence and competence. And it ain’t gonna happen.

Good question. In the private sector, Cruella’s head would have rolled long ago, but she’s a strongly pro-abortion liberal, so she is safe.

bw222 on December 2, 2013 at 12:29 PM

The One does not fire people for the same reason LBJ didn’t. He doesn’t want them out there telling everybody else that he’s running things as a one-man show, with everyone else in “shut up and do as you’re told” mode.

He especially doesn’t want anyone talking out of school about the way he conned the American people, and his own party’s Congressional delegation, into O-care. Granted, it’s a socialist wet dream for the left, but it has to at least work at about 50% capacity to achieve enough “success” to avoid the incoming fecal storm when people find out exactly how much “free health care” is going to cost them.

The thing is, right now, the O-Care website working is the worst thing that could happen to The One. When people see what they’re going to get hit with in costs and high deductibles, that’s when the pitchforks will come out to be sharpened.

All he’d need then would be one disgruntled “firee” to tell everyone that far from being out of all the loops, he was obsessed with this (which he was) and micro-managing it through his minions like LBJ did the Buffs over Hanoi (which he did).

The result would make the Pentagon Papers mess look like a mild spring zephyr with rose fragrance by comparison.

The One might find himself “encouraged” to depart 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue early- by his own party.

Which he wouldn’t. And the result of that would make the GOP “civil war” look like a debate at Oxford.

No wonder it failed – there aren’t any 5″ floppies left.

President Obama needs to fire himself, seriously.

Perhaps they couldn’t find the boot tape?

or the fact that his centerpiece legislative achievement was being programmed on TRS-80s in Kathleen Sebelius’ garage

Hey, that’s low. I’m sure any semi-competent developer could have done way better on a Trash-80 than these morons.

Not literally, of course,

Uh, yeah. Thanks for clearing that one up Ron. You’re not exactly Shakespeare in the metaphor department.

Hot Air poster wonders: Why hasn’t Obama been impeached?

But there are plenty of other pro-abortion liberals he could replace her (I’m not sure which person you are identifying as Cruella) with if he wanted to.

It’s not just his competency as an executive that is behind all the problems they’re having; it’s largely due to ideology. You can have the best chef in the world bake a cake made of crap, and it’ll still taste like crap.

BKeyser on December 2, 2013 at 2:16 PM

Nice gambit, firing people for not telling the Prez what he doesn’t want to admit he was told.

Anybody worked in government? The White House Counsel is involved in IRS targeting but didn’t happen to mention it — ever — to his boss? Impossible. Go down the list.

But, this is their answer. Heard no evil, saw no evil, was told no evil.

No way a man with ears that big didn’t hear a thing.

IndieDogg on December 2, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Of course you jest? I still have my TRS-80 Model I and it works but no way could it be used for Healthcare.gov. Nor could the Model III but the Model II from the early 1980′s could have run the system quite well. That’s with it’ 64K of ram, 8in floppies and a 25lb 20 Meg hard drive that cost $2,200.00.

jpcpt03 on December 2, 2013 at 2:51 PM

SO many great comments on this thread. What a read.

Firing anyone at all would mean he isn’t perfectly competent as an executive (a “better chief of staff than his chief of staff,” if you will) and therefore it isn’t all the rubes’ and racists’ fault. Can’t have that gettin’ out.

inviolet on December 2, 2013 at 2:57 PM

As long as you kiss his petootie, you can stay, no matter how incompetant you are. That is the bar.

“The problem is that we don’t have competent executives in this administration, starting at the top.”

And they are all Democrats…

… but the GOP Establishment asks that we not mention that fact.

Seven Percent Solution on December 2, 2013 at 3:33 PM

The die is cast on this one. The Zero administration will not, cannot, ‘clean house’. The reason is as clear as it is poetic — when you are fundamentally a criminal enterprise, you can no more get rid of the incompetent people you have (they know where the bodies are buried) than you can hire competent ones from the outside (they’d LEARN where the bodies are buried.)

Nope. He’s stuck, and stuck good. No getting out of this box other than to make his fellow criminals competent somehow. Heh. Good luck with that.
