Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on December 1, 2013 by Allahpundit

Bet you thought this morning’s Sunday shows would lead with the status of Healthcare.gov, now that the key November 30th deadline has come and gone. Nope: The topic du jour is the Iran deal and national security, with House Intel Committee chief Mike Rogers visiting “Meet the Press” and “State of the Union,” Senate Foreign Relations Committee chair Bob Menendez appearing on “Face the Nation,” and former CIA director Michael Hayden getting the spotlight on “Fox News Sunday.” Is the Iran enrichment detente merely a bad deal or a historically bad deal? We’ll find out.

There’ll be time enough for chitchat about the O-Care website next Sunday, I guess. If, after endless White House blather about repairs, the site ends up being unusable this week too, the media will have no choice but to cover it. The sound of the Democratic stampede will be too loud to ignore. The full line-up is at Politico.

Iran, powers to meet next week on carrying out nuclear deal
DUBAI Sun Dec 1, 2013 7:26am EST

(Reuters) – Envoys of Iran and six world powers will meet next week to start working out steps to implement a deal under which Tehran is to curb its nuclear program in return for some respite from sanctions, a top Iranian negotiator said.

The landmark November 24 interim accord between the Islamic Republic and the United States, France, Germany, China, Russia and Britain is seen as a first step towards resolving a decade-old dispute that has stirred fears of a new Middle East war.

Enrollment in health plans — the most important measure — has been accelerating.
But the performance of the troubled HealthCare.gov website, which consumers in 36 states are supposed to be able to use to sign up for health coverage, still falls well short of basic standards for Internet-based commerce.
Errors on Web pages and unscheduled outages remain far more common than on commercial sites. Some consumers still run into dead ends when navigating deep into the application and enrollment process, say advocates who work with the site to enroll uninsured Americans.
Moreover, while parts of the site that consumers use function much better, the complex systems necessary for processing applications and sending consumer information to insurance companies still don’t function properly, insurance industry officials say.

The White House announced on Sunday morning that it has met its “goal” of ensuring that HealthCare.gov “will work smoothly for the vast majority of users,” noting that the beleaguered site can now accommodate 50,000 concurrent users and 800,000 consumers throughout the day.
HealthCare.gov had originally been designed to handle 50,000 visitors, but “as few as” 500 users crippled it in early October, though capacity grew to 25,000 by mid-November.
In an 8-page report filled with performance charts and graphics from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the administration tics off a series of improved metrics: more than 400 bug fixes and software improvements, response time is now running under 1 second, error rates driven down from over 6 percent to under 1 percent, and the system is available 90 percent of the time.
“There is more work to be done to continue to improve and enhance the website and continue to improve the consumer experience in the weeks and months ahead,” the report notes.

Weird story from UK…

“A pregnant woman has had her baby forcibly removed by caesarean section by social workers.

Essex social services obtained a High Court order against the woman that allowed her to be forcibly sedated and her child to be taken from her womb.

The council said it was acting in the best interests of the woman, an Italian who was in Britain on a work trip, because she had suffered a mental breakdown.

The baby girl, now 15 months old, is still in the care of social services, who are refusing to give her back to the mother, even though she claims to have made a full recovery.

The case has developed into an international legal row, with lawyers for the woman describing it as “unprecedented”….”

Obama rightly predicted errors would remain. The department reported the website is up and running 95 percent of the time – meaning a 1-in-20 chance of finding a broken website remains. The government also estimated that pages crashed a rate less than once every 100 clicks.

There is no way to independently verify the administration’s figures.

The nation’s largest health insurer trade group said significant problems remain.

Karen Ignagni, president and CEO of America’s Health Insurance Plans, said insurers have complained that enrollment data sent to them from the website include too much incorrect, duplicative, garbled or missing information. She said the problems must be cleared up to guarantee consumers the coverage they signed up for effective Jan. 1.

Iranian missile group delegation visited Pyongyang as Geneva nuclear talks were underway

Iranian missile technicians secretly visited North Korea as part of joint development of a new rocket booster for long-range missiles or space launchers at the same time nuclear talks took place in Geneva, according to U.S. officials.

Several groups of technicians from the Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group (SHIG), a unit in charge of building Iran’s liquid-fueled missiles, traveled to Pyongyang during the past several months, including as recently as late October, to work on the new, 80-ton rocket booster being developed by the North Koreans, according to officials familiar with intelligence reports.

The booster is believed by U.S. intelligence agencies to be intended for a new long-range missile or space launch vehicle that could be used to carry nuclear warheads, and could be exported to Iran in the future.

Recent U.S. intelligence assessments have said that both North Korea and Iran are expected to have missiles capable of hitting the United States with a nuclear warhead in the next two years.(More……….)

James Capretta of the Ethics & Public Policy Center, and Neera Tanden, President of the Center for American Progress.

.
Well that was a complete waste, as talking to any progressive about anything always is… too bad Chris Wallace likes her so much and thinks she is so cute ’cause she acted like she was in complete control and had no qualms about interrupting and talking over her opposite, James Capretta of the Ethics & Public Policy Center. I think he was chosen for his non-aggressive demeanor and soft voice.
.
Anybody on a panel with Neera Tanden needs to have a roll of duct tape handy… it can cover spewing holes quite nicely.

There was a slew of these in Tarrant County a couple of years ago…In 11 cases it was a family who squatted on multiple properties.

One squatter got 10 years probation.

They seem to move around from state to state.

I actually got onto healthscare.gov just now and created an “account”. Darn — I thought it would crash.

And, apparently, the front end is “fixed” so that the number of users is limited. None of the problems with the back end and getting information to the insurers is working. But since you can’t see that from your home computer (at least until some Chinese hacker has emptied out your bank account).

One victim (from a couple of years ago) in Tarrant County was in Houston getting Chemo.

That treatment can take months.

In another case in Florida it was a bank foreclosure and the judge sided with the squatters.

In Texas the law that is exploited is an old law whereby ranchers who were tending abandoned ranchland next to their land could file a claim…but this has been exploited by squatter networks, some of which are criminal gangs.

Yeah.

Once you open an account at the website you can’t close it….even if you don’t purchase a plan.

“The testimony at a congressional hearing could increase concerns among many Americans about Obama’s healthcare overhaul, popularly known as Obamacare. Opinion polls show the botched rollout of the online marketplace for health insurance policies has hurt the popularity of the effort.

The website collects personal data such as names, birth dates, social security numbers, email addresses and other information that criminals could use for a variety of scams.

In a rapid ‘yes’ or ‘no’ question-and-answer session during a Republican-sponsored hearing by the House of Representatives Science, Space and Technology Committee, Republican Representative Chris Collins of New York asked four experts about the security of the site:

‘Do any of you think today that the site is secure?’

The answer from the experts, which included two academics and two private sector technical researchers, was a unanimous ‘no.’

‘Would you recommend today that this site be shut down until it is?’ asked Collins, whose party is opposed to Obamacare and has sought to capitalize on the failures of the website since it opened for enrollment on October 1.

Three of the experts said ‘yes,’ while a fourth said he did not have enough information to make the call….”

The full line-up is at the Democrat National Committee’s partisan media clearinghouse, Politico.

At least Politico bothered to post it. What’s wrong here? It used to be customary.

Bet you thought this morning’s Sunday shows would lead with the status of Healthcare.gov

…Iran deal and national security

Big squirrel…over there…plus, the China grab.

Yes, they can.

The world laughs at the USA. obama is just a tiny boy.

Schadenfreude on December 1, 2013 at 12:03 PM

From insiders, the updated and ‘improved’ website only ‘works’ from the front end. Nothing, not even going through all the steps on the site, will enable anyone to sign up. Nothing at the back end works, nada. They haven’t even attempted to fix, or to test from start to finish.

Today is like yesterday, no matter what they say.

2014 people will die due to obama and obama’care.

2014 people will lose their jobs or their full time status, due to obama and obama’care’.

2014 the economy will tank due to obama and obama’care’.

Media, Iran squirrels. Die in obama’s azz, you chitconsumers. It ain’t Beluga caviar, fools. I hope you all choke. YOU no longer deserve to live/work freely. The constitution gave you much but you NO longer deserve/earn such freedoms.

Schadenfreude on December 1, 2013 at 12:12 PM

The reason the US gov’t treats the people like morons is because the majority are just that. It’s the self-made downfall of the once good land, the beacon of the world.

I’ve heard that once you create an account, you cannot escape the website as an insurance path even if you find you do not qualify for subsidies. You are blocked from going directly to insurers to buy a package. Can anyone confirm?
