Obama to Netanyahu: Can you chill out on complaining about my Iran deal?

posted at 2:31 pm on November 30, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

It’s been clear ever since the deal was struck that Israel was no fan of the six month “temporary arrangement” being cooked up with Iran. Bibi Netanyahu was out in front of the press calling it an historic mistake and refusing to have his nation bound by any such agreement. His criticism – along with that of many of Israel’s supporters – hasn’t tapered off since then, even though the White House seems to have bought itself six months to come up with something more palatable. But the President isn’t one to just ignore the concerns of a valued ally like Israel, so he placed a call to suggest to Netanyahu a new plan for moving things forward. Hey… how about you just shut up?

President Obama has sent a query to Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu, asking the fiery and blunt-talking prime minister to take a break from his criticism of the U.S.-forged deal with Iran.

The Washington Post reported that Mr. Obama made the request during a phone call with the Israeli leader.

Mr. Netanyahu has publicly slammed the deal, saying Iran has won concessions that put Israel’s security in jeopardy. In the phone call, Mr. Obama said he’d keep Israel authorities in the loop on the final settlement arrangement —which could come as early as in six months — if Mr. Netanyahu could quiet his rhetoric a bit, The Hill reported.

Mr. Obama also reiterated that America and Israel have the same policy goals over Iran.

I’m not the expert on the Middle East here (I’ll leave that to Allahpundit), but even I don’t see this as a really high probability pitch. The real problem here may just be the one which was highlighted by the fact that Bibi came out blasting with a public statement on day one. Things have changed in the American Israeli relationship and this looks like a very telling symptom of it. There was a time when that press conference probably wouldn’t have happened. First of all, Israel probably would have either been at the table for the negotiations, or at least had a US rep on the phone with them keeping them updated as the talks proceeded. And if the deal looked like too much of a loser, Netanyahu would have picked up the phone and had the ear of the White House, cutting things off at the pass before they reached such a strained point.

Clearly Bibi doesn’t feel that’s a viable option with the current administration, so he winds up taking his case to the international community on CNN. Everyone is still painting a bit of a hopeful face on things – a requirement to be sure – because the day will have to come when the relationship gets back on a more historically normal keel. But for the time being, expect more of these public spats, at least until Israel feels they have the ear of the White House again.

You would think that a program to spend “$20 million per year for 10 years to aid 10,000 minority students each year, including blacks, Arabs, Hispanics, Asians and native Americans” would be referred to somewhere other than one obscure 1979 column, but I haven’t found any other word of it.

Maybe the funding materialized, maybe it didn’t, but what’s particularly noteworthy is that this black Islamic lawyer who “for several years [had] urged the rich Arab kingdoms to cultivate stronger ties to America’s blacks by supporting black businesses and black colleges and giving financial help to disadvantaged students” was also the same lawyer who allegedly helped arrange for the entrance of Barack Obama into Harvard Law School in 1988.

Such crusaders have a nasty habit of either not noticing how much damage they do, not caring about it, or seeing it as the recipients’ “just desserts”.

One of the most enduring myths about Barack Obama is that he’s been a better foreign policy president than a domestic one. Given his feeble record at home, that isn’t saying much. And now, after the wholesale collapse of his “soft diplomacy” throughout the Muslim world, that myth has finally been shattered.

http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2012/09/20/real-reason-obama-snubbed-netanyahu/

Indeed, when it comes to foreign policy, it’s amateur hour in the White House. This rank amateurism was on full display in the confusing and contradictory manner with which Obama treated the two most important leaders in the Middle East— Prime Minister Benjamin “Bibi” Netanyahu of Israel and Mohammed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood president of Egypt.

“It is not a secret that we in Bahrain have felt [threats that] affect our security, with all foreign-related links to that.”

Bahrain, which hosts the US Fifth Fleet as a strategic bulwark against Iran across the Gulf, has suffered frequent unrest since 2011 when its Shi’ite Muslim majority took to the streets demanding reforms and a bigger say in government.

The Sunni Muslim monarchy in Bahrain and in neighboring Saudi Arabia have regularly accused Shi’ite Iran of fomenting the unrest. The Islamic Republic denies such accusations.

Law firms are businesses. Produce or you’re out, even if you are diverse window-dressing. Law firms are very, very careful on documenting performance reviews to avoid discrimination lawsuits.

Nobody believes you. You have been proven to be a fraud on numerous occasions. Go fluff obambi some more.

VegasRick on November 30, 2013 at 4:09 PM

whether you believe me or not is of little concern to me…I know that I did graduate from there, and that’s all that really matters

nonpartisan on November 30, 2013 at 4:12 PM

thank you for belaboring the obvious

I graduated from Harvard Law myself and know well what it takes to make partner at a top firm…Obama certainly had ‘it’ to be partner if he so chose

nonpartisan on November 30, 2013 at 4:04 PM

I’ve been practicing in Philadelphia for over thirty years, and have seen several cases in the legal papers on discrimination by diversity associates who didn’t make partner. The associates always lost. (That doesn’t include the ones who never filed suit because they knew the performance reviews would be in evidence (a former colleague and mediocre lawyer found this out at his new firm.)

To make partner here, generally:

2000 to 2500 billable hours a year of quality work.

Bring in $100,000-200,000 of new business (i.e., steal it from another law firm, unless you know a lot of people strting new businessea).

Charity work on your own time that gets the firm’s name in the papers. (hospital board, homeless shelter, pro bono, etc.)

Able to get along with others. (Obnoxious genuises are rarely tolerated).

Obama would probably fail on all accounts.

You lie like the poseur you fluff, numb nuts.

I don’t know why but I can’t stop laughing…..

If I may. I think he means after the dog eater is out of power, there is a leader again in the White House who doesn’t help the enemy while kicking our allies in the teeth and loves the USA and believes in American exceptionalism.
I hope he’s led out in cuffs.

RovesChins on November 30, 2013 at 2:46 PM

Yes, I understood that full well.

I would argue that after 3 more years of BHO’s ME policies, such an option will no longer exist.

sopartisan again do you have brain damage? Seriously, have you had a stroke or an injury?

Wethal on November 30, 2013 at 4:12 PM

yes I know well the requirements to make partner

those hours would actually be on the low-end for a firm such as Wachtell, where it is not uncommon for associates to bill upwards of 3000 hours

I think had Obama chosen the law firm route, he would’ve naturally gravitated towards litigation over transactional corporate practice…so a Cravath might’ve been his destination

His towering height, thunderous voice, and unparalled intellect would’ve made him a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom and out…he would’ve been chased by clients and I wouldn’t be surprised if he weren’t made partner (perhaps non-equity to start) by the end of his 4th year

And knowing him, he would’ve probably left the partnership after two years and started his own firm Obama & Associates, and would’ve been one of the biggest rainmaking litigators of this century
