White House now trolling local media for positive ObamaCare coverage

posted at 1:11 pm on November 26, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

What happens when a previously-adoring national media starts reporting on your failures and rejects your spin?  If you’re the Barack Obama White House, you start looking for media you can spin — even with transparently risible stunts like barely-attended protests staged by Obama’s former presidential campaign:

President Barack Obama has bungled HealthCare.gov so badly that he’s told senior aides to not even try to win positive coverage from the national press.

Instead, they’re going local.

In the past month, Obama and his Cabinet have hit nine of the top 10 cities with the highest concentration of the uninsured, while senior administration officials have held almost daily reporter conference calls in nearly a dozen states to challenge Republican governors who refuse to expand Medicaid.

Obama’s political arm, Organizing for Action, is taking a similar approach, holding protests — some only attended by a dozen or so people — that win coverage on the local pages of the nation’s small-town newspapers. …

Josh Earnest, the principal deputy White House press secretary, got top billing in front page stories last week in The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg, S.C., The Post and Courier of Charleston, S.C., and the Portland Press Herald in Maine — offering the same talking points that the administration repeats daily in Washington without much notice.

And while the White House briefing room is dominated by national news outlets, just behind the door where the communications staff works is a wall covered with reproductions of front pages of local newspapers. Stories about Obama’s initiatives are outlined with yellow highlighter.

Don’t get me wrong — I’m not knocking the strategy as a political effort.  For one thing, the White House doesn’t have much choice, as the national media have focused on the overall failures and the statistics that expose the “you can keep your plan” lie.  Talking points now generate laughter rather than headlines from the White House press corps, at best. This isn’t so much a deliberate strategy as it is a default.

However, bear in mind that the White House and OFA have had success with this approach before. In last year’s presidential election, we ridiculed Obama’s strategy of ignoring the beat reporters for national politics in favor of entertainment media and local news — where the star power of a sitting President (and this one in particular) guaranteed few probing questions would cross Obama’s path.  What followed was an avalanche of myth-cheering, while the national media focused their critical attention on Mitt Romney in Obama’s absence.

That is the limitation with this strategy, though. Obama isn’t running for office, and there isn’t anyone else on whom the national press can focus in his absence. Besides, the stories from local news media have hardly been more positive than that of the national media, except for the reporting on OFA and White House stunts.  The failures of ObamaCare have already impacted millions of people directly through cancellations, higher premiums and deductibles, and worse coverage — and those people have tens of millions in personal contact with them who have heard about their horror stories.  The White House can conduct dozens of dozen-participant rallies to get themselves on the local evening news, but it will stand as much chance of reversing their political momentum as a snowball has of stopping an avalanche.

They are desperately stupid in the WH and all around.

The looser-stories affect the others, the Rs and indies. Those stories, especially when the dead will begin to be reported on in 2014, will be front/center.

Two observations:

1) Obama is always campaigning. That is all he really knows – campaign and sell. Do both of those enough, and he remains convinced he can sell triple keystone priced ice cubes to Eskimos in the middle of an Arctic winter.

2) The Obama vapid campaign / sell strategy focusing on local media works when it’s only about theory or a theoretical point – like arguing if healthcare is a right or the importance to get the family of Jane Doe, age 6 suffering from cancer, health insurance after her father is laid off from his job after 15 years.

But where it fails is when the argument is grounded in reality – with millions holding health insurance cancellation notices in their hands – ending coverages they were promised they could keep.period. Or when a mother with breast cancer getting treatment in the area’s top cancer hospital with top oncologists, gets a cancellation notice from her insurance company, and after struggling to get O’care coverage, see’s not only her out of pocket costs quadruple each year, but she loses access to her hospital and doctor as they are now ‘out of plan’.

The light that reality is shining on the veracity of Obama and his Administration is one that they cannot just turn off by changing venue or topic.

Holidays represent a chance to reflect on some of the most wonderful gifts in life: religion, our loved ones, and all the blessings we’ve been given in our lives. They’re a time that creates camaraderie between strangers, and reminds us of our community ties. No one – not even the president – should hijack the holidays to make them a time where we emphasize our red-blue divide, not what holds us together as a nation.

…..funny, the left always seems to not want to hear from anyone but there own, and aren’t too big on Customer service, wonder why that is? Especially since they are a tech company?

http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-has-no-phone-number-2012-11

Back in September, I wrote a small item pointing out the fact that it is impossible to reach any LinkedIn staff member by phone (unless you already know their direct line).

Writing that post was a huge mistake.

Unfortunately for me, that story is now the No.2 Google result for “LinkedIn Phone Number.”

Now I frequently get calls from people trying to reach someone at LinkedIn, or people who believe that I am a LinkedIn employee. Multiple calls per week, not including hangups. (The top Google result is for a site that has a phone number that doesn’t work; LinkedIn’s own pages don’t really rank; so my story appears as the only useful piece of information on LinkedIn’s phone number situation.)

The no-phone policy is frustrating for users and potential advertisers who just want to talk to someone at the company about their accounts or the buying ad space.

Some of the complaints I’ve heard are reasonable, and distressing. And the stakes are increasingly high: More and more companies require a LinkedIn resume rather than the real thing for job applications.

One woman told me she left her job and then realized she had stored her LinkedIn password on her old employer’s computer. She didn’t know how to get it back. Another LinkedIn user told me she accidentally created a second account for herself — and found herself locked out of both. Get locked out of LinkedIn and you could get locked out of your career.

They’re the kind of problems that are most satisfyingly solved with a simple call to an employee.

And, therefore, I get all LinkedIn’s calls.

So, for the record: I am not a LinkedIn employee, and I don’t know the phone number of anyone in the Help Department.

If you are looking for help from LinkedIn, you CANNOT call them on the phone. The company would prefer it if you went through these channels:

The LinkedIn Help page.
The LinkedIn Help Twitter account.

But please don’t call me.

Alternatively, Mr. Weiner, you might want to consider offering your members and customers a way to speak to a human being at LinkedIn.

I’ve wondered about people that are able to live on ‘other than what the IRS defines as income’, like investment vehicles that you have total control over or simply cash.

You could flip-flop year by year, taking out enough in odd years to live through the even years where you get big subsidies.

Those that have access to IRS-approved income-deferral plans can also play them to suck up big government bucks.
