Video: Was tip-denial viral story a hoax?

posted at 9:51 am on November 26, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Did a New Jersey waitress dupe the media over an $18 tip? Two weeks ago, the story from New Jersey that went viral focused on a restaurant bill that had a note slamming the waitress’ lesbian lifestyle in place of a tip for a $93.55 meal. “IM (sic) Sorry,” the hand-scrawled note read, “But I cannot tip because I do not agree with with (sic) your lifestyle and how you live your life.” The story generated outrage and a deluge of donations, which Dayna Morales pledged to forward to Wounded Warrior Project.

But hold the outrage for a moment, and the donations, at least through Morales. The family with the bill says that they did actually leave a tip — for $18, or roughly 20% — and have the bank statement to prove it. NBC’s Today interviewed the family this morning:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

NBC New York has more details, which seem damning:

But a family contacted NBC 4 New York claiming their receipt from the restaurant shows they did leave a tip, and provided what they said was a credit card statement as proof.

The husband and wife, who asked to remain anonymous, showed NBC 4 New York a receipt that appeared to be printed at the same minute, on the same date, for the same $93.55 total, except with an $18 tip.

They also provided a document they said was a Visa bill, which appears to indicate their card was charged for the meal plus the tip, for a total of $111.55.

The couple told NBC 4 New York that they believed their receipt was used for a hoax. The wife says she is left-handed and could not have made the slash in the tip line, which she said looks to be drawn from the right.

“We’ve never not left a tip when someone gave good service, and we would never leave a note like that,” the wife said.

The husband said he and his wife have both worked in restaurants and believe in the value of tipping, and noted that he didn’t vote for Gov. Chris Christie because the governor doesn’t support gay marriage.

“Never would a message like that come from us,” he said.

The family believes that the hoax may have been retaliation for a misunderstanding that happened at the beginning of their meal, after they were told “Dan” would be serving them. Regardless, the restaurant later told NBC New York that they would investigate what happened — especially since the family got charged the full $111.55 for the meal by the restaurant, a fact corroborated by their credit-card statement.

Don’t let this keep you from donating directly to Wounded Warrior Project, which is a fine organization. But it should be a lesson in retaining some skepticism about strange claims of victimization, especially petty incidents like this. Even if it was on the level, was this really a news story at all?

And if you haven’t heard, Matthew Shepherd was killed by fellow gays in a drug-related/robbery incident. You can take down your posters now, Libfree.

mankai on November 26, 2013 at 10:02 AM

The information that the Shepherd murder was drug- or money- based (not a hate against homosexual based) crime actually came out a few years before that book, in an article on the internet by ABC News. I never did understand why other conservatives didn’t realize that, and did not realize it until that new book that came out a few months.

That information has been around for a long time. I guess liberals had so thoroughly beat the “he was killed for being homosexual” line into the ground that even manyconservatives believed it without question.

TigerPaw on November 26, 2013 at 11:56 AM

Why would I expect them to? It’s not like the gays have some unified organ like the NAACP is for blacks — someone of great repute whose word constitutes the conscience of the gay community…

Let’s look at it another way. When a heterosexual (as we both apparently are) commits a crime of moral turpitude, is there a heterosexual organization which speaks for all of us which steps up and says “We heterosexuals had a member screw up — she lied about the tips she received from supporters of homosexuality.”

Nope — ain’t going to happen.

unclesmrgol on November 26, 2013 at 11:34 AM

LOL, loser.
I am talking about individuals recognizing her as someone they should OUTCAST. Those who care about their own reputation should make certain to show everyone else that not only does she not represent them, but that they are pushing her out of their enclave of support.

If someone associated with me did something this dispicable, you better believe they would be pushed completely out of my sphere and I have done so on more than a handful of occasions for lessor immoral behavior.

That is how you keep the government out of things like this. Self policing your community by making those who do disgusting things like this suffer significant consequences within the community.

astonerii on November 26, 2013 at 11:59 AM

The left believes America is bigoted. So when they see what they feel is confirmation of this “fact”, they pull out the megaphone. Plus it gives them a change to push their agenda.

Hard Right on November 26, 2013 at 11:52 AM

This is going to come across as glib and slightly psychobabblish …

I think the racist, the bigot, the homophobe, is primarily inside the leftist, rather than in the world. The leftist separates the world into groups like gay/straight, white/black, rich/poor. Then in his mind he exalts the minority and downtrodden, the gays, the blacks, the poor. But they don’t understand you don’t have pride without shame, you don’t have exaltation without denigration, you don’t have up without down. It’s two sides of the same coin, and he doesn’t realize, it’s his coin. So he believes he has the good side of the coin, and it’s other people who own the bad side of the coin. It’s in him, but he attributes it to others. You can’t have “I’m gay and proud” without the flip side “I’m gay and ashamed”. The leftist projects the bad stuff onto others and keeps the good stuff for himself.

Paul-Cincy on November 26, 2013 at 12:03 PM

Remember the hangman nooses left on door knobs at some college campus that proved fraudulent?

The family should sue the restaurant out of business. I believe the only way to dramatically reduce manufactured “hate crimes” is to make the penalty so harsh that employers are forced to get out in front of incidents and acknowledge the fraud, or at least note the possibility immediately. The company could/should have gotten a receipt from the credit card company as soon as the allegations arose.

People who make fraudulent “hate crimes” allegations should be in jail, or unemployable, or both.

Rode Werk on November 26, 2013 at 12:11 PM

You’re comfortable casually and unabashedly lying, so you don’t mind it in others so long as they’re on your team. You may even expect it for the any-means-necessary win.

This is very, very typical of gays. There have been and continue to be numerous stories through the country over the last 25 years of gays planting stories, even vandalizing themselves, in order to generate news stories. They do it partially to generate sympathy for themselves, but mainly to demonize those who hold that homosexuality is intrinsically disordered.

Rode Werk on November 26, 2013 at 12:11 PM

And more importantly, they should be friendless. Trying to pull something like this should pretty much leave the person with mom, dad and a couple siblings as their only (if grudgingly) place of moral support. In this instance, she should be shamed out of the gay community and be tossed aside by any potential muff divers as an unworthy mutual masturbation partner.

I miss Michelle Malkin’s blogging.

Whenever she’d write about a hoax like this, she’d link to all the previous hoaxes done in similar fashion in recent years.

Malkin put so much into her work, and she was always so thorough. She always gave lots of context and had so much passion while blogging.

Ed, it would be nice if you followed Malkin’s lead and blogged in a less passive way and always remembered to provide lots of context and “round-ups” of similar stories.

I am sure you see the irony of the situation. A lesbian that is mis-identified as “Dan” expresses her hate of the couple by staging a fake “hate crime” by the couple. But it’s okay. She’s a homosexual, so her victim-card allows her to get away with only a “tut-tut.”

So far she is not forced to return the donations.
So far she is not losing her job.
So far, she is not even forced to admit she is the one that forged the receipt. (the police should be hiring a hand writing analyst and finding out and preparing to charge her with something.)
Thus far she has faced not even a tut-tut and should face far more.

Maybe not, but it does chip away at the usual leftist and homosexual activist narrative that homosexuals are only the victims in our culture, that they are forever persecuted by meanie Republicans and Christians, and are never, ever the aggressor.

When I said “maybe not.” -Come to think of it, her homosexuality does in fact play a role in this story, because she is using it to stage sympathy for herself and get donations from people.

Taking her cue from the waitress who recently hustled thousands of dollars from suckers, er, supporters over her claim that a couple who bought a carry-out didn’t tip her and instead wrote the N-word on the receipt.

cheeflo on November 26, 2013 at 10:52 AM

That one was also most likely a fraud. The customer who allegedly wrote the “n word” insult on the bill denies that he did it, and even hired a handwriting expert to compare his handwriting to the writing on the bill. The expert said they were not a match. But the phony “victim” waitress still pocketed a lot of donations from duped strangers who felt sorry for her after she posted a photo of the “insult” online, which was probably the whole point of the exercise anyway.

This latest “gay” insult feels like just another copycat incident by somebody looking to make easy money and generate pity for herself (while also perpetrating the myth that gays are under constant assault from hostile strangers, and thus need special legal protections).

thuja on November 26, 2013 at 1:12 PM

Looks to me like the gay waitress did a reprint of the receipt, which is extremely easy to do…you just press a function key like F6 and then type in the ticket number…and then she turned in the reprinted receipt to the restaurant including the tip and then she doctored up the original in order to draw attention to herself.

Unless they tell you which way they roll, it’s just a guess.
That’s my main point – I’ve never had a server TELL me which way they go.
That’s just not relevant to any conversation that should happen between server and customer in a restaurant – unless one of you is actively trying to “pick up” the other – or unless one of you is so incredibly forward and such a busy body (or bigot) as to directly ASK. There’s just no good reason to ask or tell in that situation.

I pointed it out as well, and got flamed by hundreds of comments from people calling me a “typical right wing denier of hate” and asking me why on earth such a fine upstanding young lesbian would ever make such a story up.

Cue today’s revelations, and the exact same people are leaving comments like “Just because they produced a credit card bill doesn’t prove anything. They could have forged it. I’m not going to judge until we have solid proof.”

For some reason our society has created a very large group of people that have a very strong sense of entitlement. That sense of entitlement is the necessary and sufficient variable for a group of personality disorders: anti-social, narcissistic, borderline, and histrionic. I contend that liberals/leftists have at least a mixture of behaviors from these disorders and many could be diagnosed with at least one of the disorders. These people range from the pain in the necks, easily offended to those willing to destroy other peoples’ reputations in order to prevail in life. I also contend our culture and its institutions have been thoroughly penetrated by these people, and this will unceasingly get worse and worse.

Furthermore, EVERYONE gave her the benefit of the doubt by crucifying the couple. And the funniest things, if the made up paper said NOTHING about Christians, and yet they all assumed this was a Christian who did something like that.

The completely biased coverage has everything to do with her being gay. And the media and it’s ilk were fast coming to her aid. Can’t ever question a “victim” group.

Gosnell was local story, but this rates national coverage?

Oh. OK.

Nothing worse than lying homosexual scum.

Dollayo on November 27, 2013 at 2:52 PM

I like those activists on the Today show saying: “It’s bizarre”, “It’s a mystery”…..No it’s not really a mystery at all, it is a big lie, by a lying homosexual to defraud people of money. This piece of scum should be fired immediately and prosecuted for creating a fake charity by using deception.

It appears Dayna Morales has a reputation among friends and former co-workers as a liar.

you have got to spend a few min reading this Daily Kos thread and some of the nuts that were defending her.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/11/26/1258509/-Was-the-Dayna-Morales-story-a-hoax

apparently the belief in a huge conspiracy of forged visa docs is MORE plausible than the possibility that a lesbian lied.

Seems like the old saying of…Ray Charles, could have seen this coming…is apropos.

Isn’t she trapped inside the body of someone else, also?

Or born with dissonant genitalia?

Or oppressed by Darwin?

Or some b.s.?

Who’s Gosnell?

What is wrong with these sodomite’s brains?

We already know their moral condition.

This is NOT a tough one as the idiot lady says. This waitress has been outed as a habitual liar. She shaved her head and claimed she had cancer. She was kicked out of the military, and the family has proof of this lie. They have the receipt and the credit card statement. That’s like 100,000% a closed case. Why do we have to suffer fools???????
