Video: Schumer not exactly thrilled with the Obama-Kerry Iran deal

posted at 8:11 am on November 25, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Sen. Chuck Schumer made an appearance last night at OHEL last night, a non-profit focusing on support for Jewish families in the US, and according to JPUpdates.com blasted the deal with Iran just cut by the Obama administration in no uncertain terms.  Declaring that Republicans and Democrats in the Senate were united in keeping sanctions in place, Schumer pledged to fight for full nuclear disarmament in Iran rather than appeasement at the expense of Israel:

NY Senator Chuck Schumer assured pro-Israel Jews, Sunday evening, that Democrats and Republicans are untied to stop President Obama from easing the sanctions on Iran, until Iran destroys its nuclear capabilities and gets rid of all centrifuges and enriched uranium.

What Schumer actually says at the very beginning is this: “Democrats and Republicans are going to work to see that we don’t let up on these sanctions, as this agreement did … [splice] … until Iran not only gives up all nuclear weapons, but all nuclear weapon capability.” Now, it’s possible that Schumer said something a little more conciliatory in the cut, but gauging by the audience reaction, it doesn’t seem likely.  This is not explicitly a declaration against the deal, but it’s about as far away from an endorsement as Schumer could get without declaring his intention to fight it.

Israel isn’t too happy about this deal either, CNN reports this morning:

Obama basically got six months to show that he can work with Iran to give up its nukes, six months in which the Israelis will have to sit on their hands. How well has that worked out so far? Er …

Iranian officials announced the upcoming construction of two new nuclear plants on Saturday, just hours before the United States and Western nations signed a nuclear pact that will allow Iran to continue enriching uranium, the key component in a nuclear weapon.

Senior Iranian officials said that they are ready to build a second and third nuclear reactor in addition to the one currently operated in tandem with Russia, according to state-run media reports.

But hey, at least we have a piece of paper Obama and Kerry can wave over their heads. Anyone see their umbrellas?

Update: David Shor figured out at least part of what Schumer said in the splice. I’ve added it to the transcripted quote.  David is working on getting a more complete version of Schumer’s remarks.

Again….Neville Chamberlain is smiling somewhere, since he is no longer “King of the International Bad Deal” as Kerry and Obama take the crown.

And this kids, is why Chuckie gets re-elected every time…

As to whether or not he actually gives a hoot about Israel surviving is a debate for another day.

Obama called Netanyahu yesterday to assure him that if Israel likes their land they can keep their land.. Period.

I’m personally glad chucku thinks that the Dems and Repubs are untied in support for sanctions. I’d rather know that they were united for more sanctions. Kerry is a sucker and an embarrassment. Freudian slip?

By the way, I heard that the administration is making a website where the Iranians can show their compliance. HaHa.

A little late for that now, Chuck. You didn’t see this coming when you spent your glory days advancing the Liberal agenda? Where did you THINK it was going to lead?

Waiting for Bill Clinton to weigh in…
If it is any kind of success (even if it is a failure), then bad news for Hillary in 2016.

If Bill praises Kerry deal…then bad news for Hillary in 2016.

Are there any red lines in this deal?

Schumer said earlier in the day the House and Senate would be pushing tougher measures against Iran for passage in the wake of the Obama-Kerry deal. The question of whether or not that’s a sham will be if it’s veto-proof when it can pass without Obama’s signature.

The House shouldn’t have any problem doing that, especially if Iran maintains it’s belligerence, and there shouldn’t be a problem getting most of the Senate GOP on board. Then it comes down to the Senate Democrats, where the main vote-counter/persuader on the Democrats’ side happens to be one Charles Schumer. If he makes these statements opposing the deal and a few weeks from now says “Golly, I just can’t come up with that 67th vote,” we’ll have a good idea that Chuck’s comments on Sunday were simply the urbranite version of what the former senior Senator from New York, Daniel Patrick Moynihan called “Boob Bait for Bubbas”, when Bill Clinton pretended to be sympathetic to the concerns of rural Americans in 1992 to get their votes, and then moved left after being elected.

Well obviously I dislike almost everything Schumer does, but he is such a sleezy politician I can’t read this kind of thing, Schumer is not Joe Leiberman.

Is he Obama’s useful idiot or does he stand for anything? real facts from others on this blog would be helpful. Is this a set up to make Mrs. Clinton and Schumer come in and pretend to restore sense? Looks like my suspicious mind running in circles this morning.

Schumer is the kind of Jew that would have been a porter on the trains to Dachau. He doesn’t give a damn about Israel.

Sadly, President Obama has left Pastor Saeed in Iran to die.

Fallon on November 25, 2013 at 9:55 AM

You can call it the Obama-Kerry deal, but negotiations have been going on for years in secrecy. This is more Shrillery than Lurch. No doubt Israel knew all about this betrayal from the start and that has been a contributor to the hard feelings between Bibi and PBHO.

MJBrutus on November 25, 2013 at 10:06 AM

slickwillie2001 on November 25, 2013 at 10:20 AM

I served with Kerry when he was a dumb boot Ensign. Looks like he has not progressed much.

So Schumer has finally figured out he is Jewish!. It is hard to know if he has led the liberal Jewish Community down the Primrose Path or vice versa. As a strong supporter of Israel, I have had many arguments with the liberal Jews who proceed to talk about Palestinian rights etc. and misunderstood Moslems.

שַׁקרָן

Exactly. (Hebrew for “liar”)

Yet we keep voting for him, why? Because in the end, politics is local, and Schumer understands this. He doesn’t care if we diagree with him on issues of national import like abortion, healthcare, or Supreme Court justices, as long as he is on the right side of the things that we care about locally.

bigdubs on November 25, 2013 at 10:37 AM

Schumer just detaches himself and walks away from the blame… not like it’s at all on him and his proggie ultra-partisan political entire life’s work. Nooooo, he didn’t have anything to do with Barky being in control, he’s got clean hands. Same with ObamaDon’tCare, I’m sure. Chuck is so pure.

Funny, I always think of Schumer as PART OF the Obama Administration.

ctmom on November 25, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Everybody here is thinking Neville Chamberlin and that is absolutely wrong. Chamberlin duped himself into thinking that if just gave Hitler the Sudatenland that would be the end of it. Obama letting the Iranians have nukes is just the beginning. I leave it up to the reader as an exercise to figure out what role Obama is playing.

jerryofva on November 25, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Chuck Schumer, who has supported without hesitation every single part of the Obama agenda and who has driven the destructive DNC policies that are killing our country, job, healthcare and economy suddenly…cares?

Is there an election coming up where Democrats need Jewish voters to continue the destruction?

Given his record, Chuck Schumer is probably the most disingenuous person on the planet.

Marcus Traianus on November 25, 2013 at 11:15 AM

Funny, I always think of Schumer as PART OF the Obama Administration.

ctmom on November 25, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Yes, that’s what is interesting about this. It erodes two aspects of Schumer’s power:
1. It’s harder for him to tell Jews that Democrats care about Israel
2. It undermines the almost unanimous sanctions that the Senate put in place against Iran

Not everyone in the Senate will see the recent power grab as a benefit for Senate democrats, rather it makes them a routine pass-through for the Executive.

smoothsailing on November 25, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Don’t treaties have to be ratified by the Senate to take effect? If a ratification vote were held, and Upchuck Schumer and other Dems voted against it (as well as Republicans), couldn’t the entire Obama/Kerry deal be overturned?

Steve Z on November 25, 2013 at 11:23 AM

Yes, this true…and why BHO has dubbed this an “interim agreement” and not a treaty. This at the heart of all things progressive, call something by a different name as if the change in verbiage changes the reality. The same program has been used throughout the BHO’s term, you can see this right now with Obamacare is now the Affordable Care Act.

It is why the progs change their moniker to libs, and then back again. It is Orwell writ large!

Archimedes on November 25, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Israel just wants the U.S. to kill it’s own soldiers and risk it’s own national security in a war wit Iran. The best way to ensure war with Iran is to keep these kinds of sanctions in place.

BTW, Iran has every right to hate Israel or the United States. Just as I have every right to hate tyrants like Obama. I’m of the opinion that I wish Iran did have nukes so Israel would have to put on their big boy pants.
