Gallup: Support for ObamaCare drops more than 10 points net when you call it “ObamaCare” or mention Obama

posted at 2:41 pm on November 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

Good lord. You know times are tough for The One when his big health-care stinkbomb actually starts smelling better to people the further removed from it he is.

I wonder if the White House already knows this from its own polling or if O’s decision to start calling it the “Affordable Care Act” again was just his way of shedding an increasingly heavy albatross. Who wants to be the one to tell him that the albatross is him?

gal

I shouldn’t be surprised but I am. It stands to reason: Many a low-information voter out there couldn’t tell you the first thing about what ObamaCare does or what the problems with it are. All they know is that there are lots of people in the newspapers and on TV grumbling about it and progressively fewer people defending it. “ObamaCare” is bad, whatever it is. Throw the word “affordable” into the mix, though, and people start to perk up. Some of them doubtless are so ignorant about policy that they don’t know that the ACA is ObamaCare. They’re reacting to keywords here, essentially: “Affordable” good, “ObamaCare” bad. The reason I’m surprised is that I wouldn’t have guessed that O’s personal popularity had fallen so low that mentioning him in tandem with the “Affordable Care Act” actually drops support for it a few points. Until very recently, The One’s favorable rating — i.e. his personal popularity — had remained net positive even during periods when his job approval tanked. The Big Lie seems to have changed that, though. Mention “Obama” now in the context of health care and you see the numbers sink, either because the very ignorant are putting two and two together and realizing that the “Affordable Care Act” signed by Obama is in fact ObamaCare or because they now think so poorly of him personally that they reflexively downgrade any policy for which he’s responsible, whether or not they know the details of it. The latter may well be true — remember, in both the big ABC/WaPo poll a few days ago and the Pew poll I blogged last week, his numbers were in freefall on virtually every issue, not just (or especially) health care.

Just for fun, a reprise from last night’s QOTD via the Washington Free Beacon.

If I were to construct a President I would furnish him with some way and qualities and characteristics which the present one so sorely lacks. He would not demand any man’s compliments, praises, flatteries; and he would be far above exacting them. I would have him as self-respecting as the better sort of man in these regards.

He would not be a merchant, a trader. He would not buy these things. He would not give nor offer to give benefits and exemptions for campaign contributions and votes. I would have him as dignified as the better sort of man in this regard.

He would value no support that he did not earn by demonstrated competency; not that born of benevolences contracted for. In his philosophy there would be no scapegoats. He would recognize in himself the Author and Inventor of this disaster and all the other disasters of his administration and the Author and Inventor of the Vehicle and Appliances for their commission; and would place the whole responsibility where it of right belongs: upon himself, the only utter incompetent.

He would not boast.

He would keep private his admirations of himself; he would regard self-praise as unbecoming the dignity of his position.
He would not have the spirit of vengeance in his heart. Then it would not issue from his lips.

He would spend the rest of his life trying to forgive himself for making America worse off when he could have made America better off the same effort and he would spend the rest of them living with his half-brother in Kenya studying rice picking.

In a bid to stem taxpayer losses for bad loans guaranteed by

Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) proposed that borrowers be required

One of the most disturbing aspects of this entire affair is the stench of lawlessness that surrounds it like a miasma. President Obama carps impatiently that he will simply direct insurance companies to reinstate the policies that they, in an effort to follow the law, have been required to cancel. He says that he will direct that application of the law be delayed a year — but he says nothing about where he is supposed to get the authority for such actions. The president’s response to the embarrassment of the eponymous legislation he shoved down the throats of the American people is one of the most disturbing occurrences of his administration. Since Magna Carta in 1215, a test of legitimacy has been the extent to which the sovereign is subject to the laws of the land. Obama is not a sovereign, exactly, but he acts as though he were above the law, that the law (like taxes) were something to be imposed on the rest of us but which he and his magic circle of apparatchiks could ignore or “delay” or partially implement at their pleasure. The law is binding upon us little people, and upon insurance companies, which would be severely penalized should they fail to abide the provisions of that intricate legislation.

I suspect that one of the reasons Obama’s approval rating is in free fall is because of his obvious surprise and petulance in his public encounters over the disaster of Obamacare. He has made some grudging half apologies, but it is clear that the only thing he is sorry about is that he cannot — not yet, anyway — simply decree what happens with health care in this country. He believes himself above the law and is impatient about finding a means of achieving that discretion. For our own good, of course. Many observers on the Right have long known this about Obama. Suddenly, though, it is out there for all to see. The American people don’t like tyrants, even smooth-talking, Harvard-educated ones. The great trek away from Obama and what he stands for — above all, government unlimited — has begun. The journey will not be pretty, but I think it is all but certain to continue.

Obamacare Now More Unpopular Than The Iraq War In 2006…

Via Washington Examiner:

Support for President Obama’s health care law has dropped 16 points in the past month — and that’s just among Democrats.

The finding, from a CBS News poll, is one of several startling numbers from polls released in recent days showing rapidly eroding public support for Obama’s signature legislative accomplishment in the wake of its botched rollout. [...]

With the 2014 midterm elections now in the horizon, what’s most striking is how closely Obamacare polling is starting to resemble polling on Iraq in fall 2006, when a public backlash against the war enabled the Democrats to take over control of both chambers of Congress.

A Gallup poll taken days before the Nov. 7, 2006, election found that 55 percent of Americans had come to view sending troops to Iraq as a mistake, compared to 40 percent who said it was not.

Yet in the CBS News poll released Wednesday, 61 percent of Americans were found to disapprove of Obamacare, compared to 31 percent who approve. In the Washington Post poll, the numbers were 57 percent to 40 percent.

Resist We Much on November 21, 2013 at 3:20 PM

The Seven Deadly Lies of Obamacare:

(1) “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan, period” (except that you can’t keep your plan, because Obama’s ‘grandfathering’ rule was written so narrowly that almost no existing plans could qualify, and your insurer was forced to cancel your plan);

(2) “If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor” (except that you can’t, because your Obamacare insurer is restricting your network choices);

(3) “Obamacare will bend the cost curve down and lower the average American family’s health insurance premiums by $2,500 a year” (except that it has actually increased the average American family’s health care premiums by more than 40%);

(4) “Obamacare won’t add one thin dime to the deficit” (except for that trillion dollars in new public debt that Obamacare is now projected to add to the deficits over the next 10 years);

(5) “Obamacare won’t lead to health care rationing” (but don’t tell that to Obamacare’s Independent Payment Advisory Board that is going to be rationing health care by refusing to authorize government payments for certain procedures/medicines, etc.);

(6) “Obamacare won’t affect Medicare benefits” (except for the half a trillion dollars that Obamacare cuts from Medicare spending to fund Obamacare); and,

(7) “Obamacare will solve the problem of the uninsured/will solve the ‘free rider’ problem” (except that it won’t, because the government’s own projections show that, even after Obamacare is fully implemented, there will still be at least 30 million uninsured Americans, even under the rosiest scenarios. Also, Obamacare does not repeal E.M.T.A.L.A., the federal law that gives people the right to show up in the ER and be treated, regardless of ability to pay, regardless of insurance status, and regardless of citizenship status).
