Sen. Gillibrand: “We all knew” that insurance plans were going to get cancelled

posted at 10:11 am on November 18, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s segment on ABC on Sunday just about perfectly encapsulates precisely why all of the feigned Democratic discomfort, disgruntlement, and even outrage pouring out over President Obama’s utterly shattered “if you like your plan, you can keep it” promise is so ludicrously disingenuous. As the Democrat from New York so aptly details, everybody involved always knew that lots of people losing their current insurance plans was not merely an accidental side feature but indeed a central premise of a functional ObamaCare rollout. People had to get kicked off of their plans at current market prices and start paying for more expensive ones in order to account for the inherently riskier insurance pools that ObamaCare creates by eschewing preexisting conditions limitations and bestowing everyone with more “comprehensive” coverage. Gillibrand, like many of her fellow Democrats still obtusely determined to forge ahead, focuses on the latter part of that equation, enthusiastically touting the totally awesome ways in which ObamaCare covers more things for more people, like birth control and pregnancy expenses for women — without making them pay more than man, never mind that they consume more services! …The former part of that equation, however, wherein somebody still has to pay for all of those things (hence the skyrocketing premiums so many Americans are now encountering), she and other Democrats are choosing to ignore.

Women also are more likely than men to be hypochondriacs and visit the doctor more. Those extra visits were priced into the higher premia women paid prior to Obamacare.

Of Course, they knew. This is just a democrat Senator, who is not up for reelection, so she felt safe making this statement. Voters have a short memory. A whole lot is forgotten between now and her next campaign. The other Democrats are probably really pissed at her.

DAT60A3 on November 18, 2013 at 10:26 AM

I’m assuming this was just a mis-speak by Chuck Schumer’s second vote, but it does seem to be part of a tone in the last few days of Democrats trying out the “What kind of idiot didn’t know plans were going to be cancelled?” strategy. It’s more in the pundit class than in the pols themselves — especially the ones having to face the voters in 11 1/2 months — but the idea appears to be to make the low-info voters think everyone with any brains at all knew this was going to happen, and you must be one of the dumb, out-of-touch people if you didn’t.

It’s a soft form of intimidation, and it’s more likely to backfire than to work. But the ObamaCare backers are throwing anything they can think of at the wall right now to see if it sticks.

The part of the Dem excuses that irks me is the one that comes next. We all know that people were going to have their policies cancelled but Obamacare is such a wonderful upgrade they’d be crazy to cling to their substandard policy! As if a 52-year-old male is going to ever use his three “free” pregnancy exams under his new awesome health plan.

Am I the only one that’s suspicious the reason the roll-out was so awful was to use that chaos to try to soften the exposure of the lie? They are still peddling the once the web site is fixed things will be better line.

What they are dealing with is 15 million getting cancelled as a prelude to 80 million next year. The perceived gains in health care will have to protected at all costs as they try to make it accepted by a majority.

Looks like Gillibrand rides a flying unicorn that craps skittles, just like Obama. Its all going to be awesome, we will allay their concerns, I have looked into their eyes in the ER, women, birth control, my son took too many puffs off his inhaler, we all knew that this would happen, but don’t worry everybody will love this, no more pregnant women kicked off their insurance (does that even really happen?), blah, blah, blah. All in that overly emotional too concerned voice that makes you want to slap her. Finally, 65 year old women have access to birth control and so will men. Yay!!! Premiums will sky rocket but the ER is finally free, free I tell you!!!! Look into their eyes….

Oh come on! Don’t any of you remember Blumenthal from Connecticut? He lied many times about one of the most sacred duties, to serve in the military, to his constituents and they didn’t seem to mind. Hillary was caught in so many lies that it made one dizzy to try and keep up with them. Slick Willie lied daily with no consequence. Since when does lying affect a Demorat? Obama has lied almost every time he opens his narcissistic mouth and so has his Attorney General Holder with nothing but adulation from the left and uninformed voter. This bimbo knows all of this and is cleaning her plate of unsightly items before the next election.

inspectorudy on November 18, 2013 at 11:48 AM

We had to lie, it was for your own good. You’re just too stupid to know what that is, so you’d kick up a fuss if we tried to explain the facts to you. Look at what we did, not what we said: We killed the Republican bill to guarantee you could keep your plan, what did you think was going to happen? And you’re all dumb enough that it would have worked if the web site hadn’t crashed on takeoff and gotten the press more interested in headlines than keeping our secrets for us. Heck, you’re all so dumb you’ll probably let us get away with it anyway.

slickwillie2001 on November 18, 2013 at 12:29 PM

Nothing like the vapid junior Senator from New York reminding us that what we’re seeing from Obamacare are ‘features, not bugs’, but that the jacobin progressive fascists had no qualms blatantly lying to the American people in order to enact their bankrupt agenda.

Millions losing coverage and being forced to pay double or more in order to facilitate massive wealth redistribution efforts while gutting the healthcare industry is, apparently, a small and necessary price to pay in order to expand government control and power over freedom and liberty.

The saddest part of this is not the progressive fascists enacting their bankrupt agenda, but in the 35-40% of the population who want something for nothing and are willing to trade votes for being bribed with their own money.

Lies only work because people want to believe the lies. The same people who believed these lies will continue to support these liars, because to do otherwise would be akin to admitting that they were stupid enough to believe the lies in the first place and to acknowledge that Democrats are nothing more than lying lefties. And then they would have to consider that the GOP and the Tea Party might actually have been telling the truth after all.

There are two narratives at work here, and it’s very satisfying interesting to see how they conflict:

Narrative 1 (red state Democrats): Mean old Barack Obama tricked us and we thought the plans were going to work but we elected leaders were LIED to and should not be held accountable for our naivete in the next election pretty please

Narrative 2 (blue state liberal Democrats): The whole point was to get healthier and less riskier people kicked off the plans that were right for them, and dropped into expensive plans so that they could subsidize all the people that didn’t qualify for insurance before on account of being a losing proposition for insurance companies look at how redistributive our plan is meant to be do you think we’re progressive enough yet

One group is trying to save their own skins, while the other group is inadvertently throwing them under the bus. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ‘em.

the totally awesome ways in which ObamaCare covers more things for more people, like birth control and pregnancy expenses for women — without making them pay more than man, never mind that they consume more services!

Conservatives should be very careful how we talk about this part of Obamacare.

Democrats claim that charging women more for insurance is “sexual discrimination”, even though it is because women need more health care services, on the average, then men.

But if you discuss it as “women shouldn’t pay more then men” the LIVs will eat it up.

So I would instead suggest that we make sure to call it out as making people buy services they don’t need – men getting maternity coverage, octogenarians getting drug addiction treatment coverage, etc…because the LIVs will see this as ludicrous.

If you look at the old actuarial tables, it is/was only true that women paid more during a period from 18-35 or so, after that and before that, men pay more. More because their health problems in old age come earlier, and because men are generally in more hazardous occupations.

Bush lied by claiming Saddam Hussein sought uranium in Africa. 00-Plame was a top secret CIA operative outed by hard-liners in the Bush inner circle. Kennedy was killed by a racist right wing conspiracy, not a Communist. “Swift-boating” is lying for partisan political reasons; Republican operatives in the military lied by claiming John F. Kerry was never in Cambodia. It never ends. And people remember the lie. Words like “swift-boating” go into the lexicon with lies built into them.
