Perfect. Seattle elects a socialist to city council

posted at 2:31 pm on November 16, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

I suppose it’s time to party like it’s 1969. Or something.

Seattle voters have elected a socialist to city council for the first time in modern history.

Kshama Sawant’s lead continued to grow on Friday, prompting 16-year incumbent Richard Conlin to concede.

Even in this liberal city, Sawant’s win has surprised many here. Conlin was backed by the city’s political establishment. On election night, she trailed by four percentage points. She wasn’t a veteran politician, having only run in one previous campaign.

But in the days following election night, Sawant’s share of the votes outgrew Conlin’s.

“I don’t think socialism makes most people in Seattle afraid,” Conlin said Friday.

Well, that’s just fabulous. So where did this new, rising political star of Seattle politics come from? The bio shows that she first rose to prominence as part of the Occupy movement. (Natch.) And she ran a campaign based on plans. Boy howdy does she have some plans.

This year, though, she pushed a platform that resonated with the city. She backed efforts to raise the minimum wage to $15; called for rent control in the city where rental prices keep climbing; and supports a tax on millionaires to help fund a public transit system and other services.

Here’s the unedited Seattle King5 interview with the newest elected official.

So, with all that in mind, perhaps we should ask Boeing if they really, really want to work all that hard to keep their plant in Washington for the 777X?

And even if it’s NOT her real name, I STILL blame her parents.

ROFL

The Gates Foundation.

Now you get to reconcile the billions that the Gates Foundation has provided to charity versus the fact that Bill and Melinda are two of the richest 1%’ers on the planet.

Obscenely rich dude whose success allows the existence of the GF versus him never having gotten rich in the first place if he had only been taxed more and had his wealth spread…liberal conundrum alert!

Bishop on November 16, 2013 at 5:49 PM

I have no problem with Bill Gates (though I think he should pay more than 15% on his capital gains). Unlike, say, Mitt Romney, he actually created jobs and wealth by bringing a new and useful product into the world. I actually have a friend who worked for the Gates Foundation at a fairly senior level. it’s all good.

That doesn’t mean, however, that Bill Gates, his wealthy minions or any similar demographic should be able to dictate urban policy (or tax policy) for their own convenience. You need the occasional socialist around to say “hey, we all love zippy tapas bars with pan-national wine lists, but that doesn’t mean you deserve a zoning variance to throw the grannies out of the old folks home so you can build it.”

urban elitist on November 16, 2013 at 5:40 PM

You moron.

Microsoft millionaires don’t live in the city proper any more than Microsoft resides within the Seattle city limits. They live in quite wealthy suburb cities that know which side of their bread is buttered on and who does the spreading.

Besides, she is just one of 9 lefties on the council; Seattle city politics has been dominated by lefties since the Carter years and it shows. She is just another libtard tool. City is going to cr@p. The out neighboring ones, where Microsoft, Google, Costco, etc. call home are actually doing quite well. Limo liberals value their money; not yours.

By the way Moron, the city’s homeless problem has skyrocketed and the place is run by liberals.
Now who cares for who????

My buddies and I hope she gets her $15/hour min. wage; they are needing an excuse to raise rents. Hers included.

Mitt Romney leveraged the tax code and impoverished formerly middle class workers for a living. His “success rate” just meant that he found another sucker to pick up the company Bain had gutted and try to keep it alive a few more years. He wasn;t an entrepreneur, he was an accountant.

George Soros must have slipped your mind as a foil to use against Bill Gates, although you also have a very limited knowledge of business if you believe someone working in private industry who doesn’t create a “useful” product isn’t contributing positively to the economy.

I love Microsoft. I love capitalism.

OK, I’m lying. Microsoft and capitalism are both functional but imperfect solutions to the challenges they are meant to solve. But the largely work and they’ve both done OK by me and I’m pretty OK by them.

However, being a successful capitalist (or employed by one) doesn’t mean that you have all the answer for every problem in the world. Microsoft millionaires — like poor people – tend to the world in terms of their on need and whims (which they tend to present as moral or practical absolutes, because that’s just how people are). All I’m saying is that having an articulate voice for individuals who aren’t wealthy, powerful, or well-organized is a good thing. It keeps the debate honest. Otherwise you have a roomful of people who are very much alike finding themselves in agreement — the AT&T of city councils.

George Soros must have slipped your mind as a foil to use against Bill Gates, although you also have a very limited knowledge of business if you believe someone working in private industry who doesn’t create a “useful” product isn’t contributing positively to the economy.

That’s typical of lefties though, excusing hyper-wealth of their own while pointing fingers at those on the other side.

Rich Democrats have been dictating urban policy for decades to get what they have wanted. See lifelong Democrat Peter Angelos, who is the majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles. He’s gamed the Baltimore political system for gain for his team for decades.

On the other hand, consider New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. He donated equally to both O’bama and McCain in 2008, and donated to Romney last year. But unlike Angelos, when Kraft built the new Patriots stadium complex, 99% of it was privately financed.

By the way, there is a reason that zoning regulations have variances. You’re just too dim to figure it out.

False dichotomy. One that the ruling class loves. I’m sure in 1843, plantation owners were saying “what, they should beg in the streets? At least we give them food and clothing.”

When one small group gets much richer and one larger group gets much poorer, it’s hard not to think that the game is rigged. Often there is a middle ground.

Keeping the Plan You Like

By Kathleen Sebelius, Secretary of Health and Human Services

Throughout the health reform debate, the President has been clear that we should build on the insurance system we have, keeping the parts that work and gradually fixing the parts that don’t.

The Affordable Care Act is designed to let Americans keep their health insurance if they like it while adding important consumer benefits to give businesses, families and individuals higher quality care at lower prices and more control over their own care.

-snip-

The bottom line is that under the Affordable Care Act, if you like your doctor and plan, you can keep them. But if you aren’t satisfied with your insurance options today, the Affordable Care Act provides for better, more affordable health care choices through new consumer protections. And beginning in 2014, it creates health insurance exchanges that will offer individuals and small businesses better, more affordable choices.

Good for Seattle! I wish them EVERYTHING that comes with a socialist government.

Joseph Schrumpeter and Max Weber met in a Vienna café, with Ludo Moritz Hartmann and Felix Somary also present. Schrumpeter indicated how gratified he was by the socialist revolution in Russia. Henceforth socialism would not just be a program on paper– it would have to prove its viability. To which Weber, showing every sign of deep dismay, replied that Communism at this stage of developement in Russia virtually amounted to a crime, and that to take this path would lead to human misery without equal to a terrible catastrophe. “That’s exactly what will happen,” agreed Schrumpeter, “but what a perfect laboratory experiment.” “A laboratory experiment in which a mountain of corpses will be heaped!” retorted Weber in feverish tones. “You could say the same thing about any dissection room,” said Schrumpeter. Every attempt to deflect their conversation to other topics failed. Weber spoke even more loudly and vehemently. Schumpeter remained guarded and quietly sarcastic. The others present listened with curiosity, waiting to see what would happen. “I can’t take any more of this!” Weber finally exclaimed, abruptly rising from his seat. He walked out, followed by Hartmann, bearing Weber’s hat. Schrumpeter remained calmly seated, commenting with amusement: “How could someone shout like that in a café?

Give your moral superiority stand a rest.

And while you’re resting you can point out the third world country that is such a shining example of anything close to Americanism. After all these years and the cheap and plentiful technology and communications, there must be one, somewhere. If not, then please explain why that is.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on November 16, 2013 at 7:35 PM

And, to be clear, those policies should be cancelled. They are theft.

urban elitist on November 16, 2013 at 7:05 PM

Theft? Someone willingly enters into a contract that provides them with benefits they need at a price that is mutually agreed to and that is theft? Are you suggesting that my refusal to fund a junkies substance abuse treatment by subsidizing their insurance pool is theft?

Not only a Neo-Confederate but a RACIST Neo-Confederate…your “National Divorce” envisions a very WHITE America and all the rest, eh?

Again cast back over our Founding Documents, see anything about skin colour? No I see a lot about Inalienable Rights and Creator, but nothing about White….

ANYONE can be an “American”…I was happy that during the 1990′s more people named “Nguyen” bought a house in Hollywood than anyone named “Smith”….that fact might have caused yo dyspepsia but to me it was a good sign…

Again Russia is very white, how democratic, Republican or free is it? Tell me about white people and freedom gain, and Mud People and their propensities…

Never enough money to pay the workers. Always enough money to buy a garage with an elevator.

urban elitist on November 16, 2013 at 7:12 PM

OHMYGOD!!! The world is coming to an END! Someone actually used money to PAY for an elevator and a construction crew to build a garage and install said elevator. What do you have against elevator manufacturers and their employees? Should those in the construction trade starve on the streets?

Primordial you are just a lazy thinker, you “think” because Locke was white that Locke’s thought was BECAUSE he was white, when instead it had everything to do with Christianity and Bacon and a host of underlying ideas…Locke COULD HAVE been Chinese had China undergone a Christian conversion and a Bacon emerged there….

The European Enlightenment could have been African or Chinese or Latin American…it was by happenstance it was European, it had NOTHING to do with genetics and EVERYTHING to do with philosophy and intellectual underpinnings.

I mean, most of the world is in the third world and they have had the benefit of being able to see America for over 200 years and copy anything they wanted from us. There must exist some great freedom-loving individualistic Constitutional Republic somewhere …

So yes, you are a racist idiot with your delusions of a National Divorce, which is going to leave us, apparently, with a WHITE Constitutional Republic and then all the Mud Peole in their Thrid World H3ll holes…

It’s really pitiful how low they have to stoop to find what they think is dirt on a fine man like Governor Romney.

But in the days following election night, Sawant’s share of the votes outgrew Conlin’s.

Anyone else find this… odd?

A 5% shift in the vote results from uncounted ballots AFTER election night when (presumably) the majority would’ve been counted?
