Kurt Schrader’s “shifting” views on Obamacare

posted at 9:21 am on November 13, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

A quick note this morning on one of the Democrats who has been “coming around” on the subject of Obamacare, specifically Oregon Congressman Kurt Schrader. Allahpundit brought you the video yesterday as part of a larger story arc, where Schrader chimed in on just how dishonest the President had been regarding, “If you like your plan..”

Let’s revisit the highlights of that first.

Very misleading…

I think next year at election time people are going to want to know, was I able to sign up? What is the shape of the benefit package I’m going to get? How much is it going to cost me at the end of the day? I think this will… the sign up problems – the horrendous problems we’re seeing now – will be way in the past. But I think the President was grossly misleading to the American public. I knew right away as a veterinarian, I have my own business, my policies got cancelled even before the Affordable Care Act. I would change policies on a regular basis trying to find the best deal for myself and my employees…

So I think the President saying you can stay with it, and not being honest about how a lot of these policies are going to get cancelled, was grossly misleading to the American public and causing stress and strife at a very difficult time.

But it turns out that this really is a new tune for Schrader to be singing. According to what used to be on his own congressional web site, he was singing with the choir long before he began hitting some sour notes.

In a statement, Alleigh Marre, an NRCC spokeswoman, accused Schrader of “blatantly misleading voters in the face of changing political winds and the plan’s botched rollout.”

According to the GOP committee, Schrader once had a section on his website discussing the new law after it was passed in 2010 that included this language:

“If you are insured and happy with your coverage, nothing changes.”

That description of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act — often called Obamacare — is no longer on Schrader’s website. The congressman’s spokesman, Cody Tucker, said he couldn’t discuss the issue until he talked with Schrader, who he said was on a plane for the next several hours.

To be fair, we should welcome Schrader on board the reality train if he’s willing to acknowledge the mess this has turned into. (And was always destined to be.) But at the same time, I don’t think you get a free pass to begin chucking tomatoes when the wind shifts without owning the fact that you were part of the crew selling the rotten fruit in the first place. This seems awfully convenient timing for somebody who is worried about earning another term in office next year with an angry electorate banging on the doors.

Politics makes for strange bedfellows, but Congressman Schrader is jumping from bed to bed a little too quickly. Own the mess you helped create and then help us clean it up, sir.

Name the last time one liberal owned a mess….#nevergonnahappen.

He’s come to the realization that obozo is no longer an asset politically, but a millstone. Most liberals will come to this realization soon enough, and the game of musical chairs will begin. The mad scramble will be fun to watch.

I wonder how this azzhat would feel if the government was going to take over the vetinary field. A whole lot less imprortant than health care but he doesn’t care. He got his 30 piecs of silver.

Of course, he also has his “seperate but equal” healthcare, pension, regulations, exemptions from insider trading and laws, loan waivers etc.

Screw him and his ilk. Once the government takes over healthcare lets go after vetinarian and dentists. Lets shut them all down.

acyl72 on November 13, 2013 at 9:31 AM

When the Democrats eventually get over being whacked in the head by the healthcare.gov 2-by-4 and come up with their spin to justify the idea that ObamaCare stinks and the answer is to go to even more government control of health care with single-payers, rest assured if he thinks the spin is convincing enough to sucker the swing voters, Rep. Schrader will be among those jumping completely back on board.

So when is media going to demonize the GOP for not helping to fix this mess? This would be pretty funny if it weren’t so damn serious.

BTW, please don’t misunderstand and think I meant a general “you” as in “you (D)s are damaging savings accounts” or “you liberal/progressives are forcing private funds once available for local churches and charities (and tax deductions) to be given to massive insurance corporations at the point of a gun”. I don’t mean it that way at all.

I mean you specifically.

Congratulations again, verbaluce, for what you’re accomplishing against middle class Americans. You’re getting exactly what you wanted.

Oh! He was just flying with his own wings.

Seriously, Senator Mark Warner has the same problem as he enters 2014 and his reelection campaign.

In 2010 Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) promised the people of Virginia that he was “not going to support a health care reform plan that’s going to take away health care that you’ve got right now or a health plan that you like.”

Well, in 2013, we are on day 43 of the rollout and he hasn’t said a word about Obamacare. I would hope the VA GOP is already prepping ads.

He’s a victim of his own religion. He worships O and the state, so he never read the bill. Simple as that. O and Pelosi told him to vote for it, so he did. They told him what to tell his constituents, so he did.

These leftists go to Congress with the intention of making speeches on behalf of “the people” and getting perks. I guarantee you he was sold the Utopian hope of this piece of crap and believed everything his handlers were telling him.

When a conservative told him it was a lie, he instinctively believed they were the liars doing Halliburton’s and the Koch’s bidding. No way O and Nanc would lie to him. These people are idealists who honestly believe their job is to make speeches and pass Great and Glorious Legislation with cool progressive titles and all will be well.

I still contend he’s a victim of his own idealism. He just trusted that a kajillion-page bill would do exactly what he was told it would do. I guarantee no Democrat ever asked “how is thing going to work in practical terms?” Hey, the bill is called “The Affordable Care Act,” how could it not work, right?

He’s a rep in the minority in the House. We don’t need his help to clean it up. In fact, since he not only failed to do his due diligence in the passing of this law, opting instead to pass a law before reading, assessing and debating it adequately, but defended the law and refuse earlier efforts to repeal as well as amend the egregious provisions of it, his help now would cast a taint on any efforts to correct the problems.

Schrader has spent his five years in the House sipping his slurpee while letting Obama drive the country into the ditch. It’s best if he just got out of the way now while serious adults solve the problems he helped create.

Dusty on November 13, 2013 at 10:24 AM

Jazz and Ed, you need to include the crew that loyally distributed the rotten fruit– The majority of the Media were either cheerleading the law, whitewashing the negative implications of it, or branding anyone and everyone that voiced criticism of it as racist.

If some of that ‘gets on you’, then you too own it, as well.

Jackson on November 13, 2013 at 9:47 AM

It will be interesting. I have little optimism though. The Oregon GOP is mostly hopeless. They’ve got some better leadership lately but I don’t hold out much hope. Keep in mind that Schrader is a guy who post Arizona/Giffords shooting publicly called out “violent right wing rhetoric” in the local paper. I loathe this idiot. Even the Oregon RINOs have called him a “moderate” who can “work with people from the other side”. Yet he’s been a straight line democrat on his votes following Pelosi’s lead.

http://www.examiner.com/article/oregon-rep-schrader-holds-beck-limbaugh-responsible-for-arizona-tragedy

The R candidate in 2010 against Schrader was good, best they’ve had in years and lost by 5% IIRC. Last year it was “Fred Thompson” who lost by 10% and the only reason I knew his name before the ballot was mailed out was due to a neighbor with a sign in his yard since August and that I listen to local right wing radio.

oryguncon on November 13, 2013 at 12:33 PM

So, this guy is a liar as well. Should come as no surprise, he’s a Liberal Progressive and believes the means justifies the end. That is until they get caught in their lies, ie..Obama. Slightly off topic, but when are the conservatives going to stand up to the questioning of “what are you going to replace it with”? This to me is a loaded question that is used on almost every forum where the Democratic Progressives debate with the Republican Progressives. To me the better question is, “how do you intend to fix this broken program”? At least this would do two things: 1) admit the law is a failure; 2) allow the voice of conservatives to be heard on a grander scale.

DDay on November 13, 2013 at 12:46 PM

When the going gets tough, the liberals change outfits. We saw this with Iraq when Clinton, Biden and Kerry voted for the war. When the media circus ensued, they changed their position and blasted the President. With TARP, the Democrats lambasted every Republican that stood in its way. Remember Jim Bunning, ex-Phils pitcher (yea) and former Congressman from Kentucky? However, they strapped the whole bank bailout on the GOP.
So, does this surprise anyone? It’s time to fight! The people need to be reminded what happens when Congress becomes a rubber stamp and don’t do their jobs, like read the bills they are voting for. Also, this is what happens when the media allow the Democrats to say and do whatever they want – “we have to pass this bill to find out what’s in it”.
Like I’ve said in the past. The GOP shouldn’t be targeting the Democrats, they should be targeting the media. Every discussion that comes up should be about the media failing the American public. That they wear their political agendas on their sleeve. That they will publicly humiliate anyone who disagrees with them, without any serious discussion. Once you take away their viewers (and the advertising dollars that come with it), you take away the biggest microphone of the Democratic Party.
