Crisis: Reid calls “special meeting” of Senate Democrats on ObamaCare

posted at 5:11 pm on November 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

I don’t get it. Sebelius claims that “the marketplace is working.” What is there to talk about?

Actually, I can think of two items on the agenda.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday will convene a special meeting of the Senate Democratic caucus and senior White Officials to discuss the troubled rollout of ObamaCare…

The Senate leader said President Obama called him Tuesday evening to discuss healthcare and other issues.

Several Democrats have signed onto a proposal sponsored by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) that would force insurance companies to let people keep their health plans if they like them.

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) said he would have a better idea of what proposals Democrats will push to improve the new law after the Thursday meeting.

Agenda item one: Are they really going to cover their asses politically by passing Mary Landrieu’s bill knowing that it’ll increase the damage to ObamaCare? If you support the law, as every Democrat does, the last thing you should want to do in the wake of the website meltdown is further discourage healthy people from signing up on the exchanges. Give ‘em back their old plans and you’re guaranteeing that the risk pools for new ObamaCare-approved policies will be even sicker and older than they already are. And the older and sicker they get, the higher premiums will have to be next year to make up for the losses, which will further discourage healthy people from enrolling. There’s a two-word term to describe that phenomenon. Hint: One of the words is “spiral.” And yet, not only is Landrieu’s bill still in play, other Democrats like Mark Udall are introducing their own “keep your plan” bills.

Agenda item two: How long before the Healthcare.gov Chernobyl is finally contained? Administration sources keep reassuring the media that November 30th is still the target date, but Sebelius told people listening to today’s HHS conference call that they might want to consider enrolling directly on individual insurance companies’ websites instead. (You’d lose your subsidy if you do that, but something like 41 percent of people whose plans have been dropped aren’t eligible for subsidies anyway.) Jim Moran went so far as to say, “They are not going to meet the November 30th deadline, I would bet anything on that. If I had a farm I’d bet the farm on that.” (Another Democrat who spoke to BuzzFeed for the story at the last link described the meeting with White House aides this morning as “incredibly tense.”) How much longer do they have to wait for good news? If the website is still in ruins next month, Obama — and congressional Democrats — will be forced to consider extending the enrollment period or delaying the mandate. If there’s no avoiding a shinola-eating vote in December, why not take a more politically popular one now on “keep your plan” to mitigate the damage?

I’ll leave you with this, from health-industry expert Bob Laszewski: “The audacity of this administration to continue telling people to keep going back to the website and the call center when they knew full well that only 25 people per day per state were making it thorough the gauntlet that is Healthcare.gov is startling. This program is in grave danger of collapsing if the administration cannot dramatically grow the size of the risk pool and attract healthy people to it.”

Here’s agenda item number three.

106,185 people have ENROLLED when the state numbers are included.

It is now EXACTLY 6 weeks to January 1, 2014 when those people are, theoretically, expecting to have new insurance policies in place.

How many of the 106,185 enrollments have had data successfully RECEIVED by the insurance companies?

Either that or a “Federal gay rights/abortion rights act” to divert attention.

kcewa on November 13, 2013 at 5:32 PM

Are they really going to cover their asses politically by passing Mary Landrieu’s bill knowing that it’ll increase the damage to ObamaCare?

Yes, in all likelihood. What they are grasping for is a gesture, most likely futile, to stop the bleeding and make it appear as if they are doing something to fix the F6/EF6 rated EpicClusterFarkNado.

He’s going to remind them that not only do they have to protect their own ‘phoney baloney’ jobs, (harumpf), they also have an obligation to protect the credibility of the President and his Administration.

How long before the Healthcare.gov Chernobyl is finally contained?

With the exception of the effect listed as the parting question by AP, this really is something that is going to have a significant radioactive ‘half-life’ even if they do manage to get the capacity to the point that it can support 60,000 to 65,000 concurrent users.

The website is just the tip of the iceberg.

What about the data quality to the insurers or the accuracy of the subsidy information? What about the effects of subsidies being paid directly to insurers – and the risks of adverse selection impacting premium prices? How about the costs and effects of the expansion of Medicaid and the IPAB? The lies around ‘if you like your Doctor’ or ‘if you like your hospital’?

And all of this is even before we get to the effects of the employer mandate – where the HHS itself estimated that nearly 2/3rds of all employer insurance plans would have to be replaced – impacting some 93 million people?

Johnnyreb on November 13, 2013 at 5:35 PM

This program is in grave danger of collapsing if the administration cannot dramatically grow the size of the risk pool and attract healthy people to it.”

All along.

There really is no “good” option for the Dems at this point. Delay it and it collapses. Pass any of the “now we really mean it, you can keep your old plane for reals” bills and it collapses. The young are not going to show up because they don’t have the money or interest and whoever convinced themselves that this would occur in the numbers large enough was high on paint thinner and meth.

Same goes for TheCarnivalBarker. He can’t sing a bill of repeal as that would be the ultimate embarrassment for a small man who lives of off praise and adulation. He can’t go forward as-is because it will collapse.

You really have to wonder what leverage Reid will have as far as stiff arming the caucus.
Yes, the alphabet networks have finally given some coverage, but I believe what is happening is getting personal for both Senate and House members.
It’s one thing to call or write your rep on some more or less abstract issue, generally only fairly tuned in voters do that (read that “not LIV”). It’s another when the wife or husband opens the mail to discover the insurance they had is now being cancelled. Sh1t just got real, and these pols are hearing about it daily and loudly.
If you happen to be a GOP rep, “Hey, I tried, I really really tried”
If you are a Dem rep, you got nothin’. Nada. Callers and constituents that just lost coverage or just realized that coverage is now unaffordable don’t want to hear a bunch of mealy mouthed Bullsh1t.
So they are freaking, and for good reason. I have no idea how this will turn out, but I guarantee Dem House and Senate members won’t be happy regardless (that part makes me smile a bit). But again, I have to temper any glee with the fact that lots of hard working folks are getting shafted big time, and the number will grow regardless. I’ll get by this year at least, but some will really suffer, and that sucks.

It can’t be ‘fixed’.

ajacksonian on November 13, 2013 at 6:09 PM

Just a simple reminder to the GOP Congressional Leadership….

…when your opponent is making a massive mistake, get out of the way. Do not try to ‘help’. Prep yourself to pick up the pieces once they are done making their mistake, and then capitalize / fix it.

In other words, your strategy has to be REPEAL and REPLACE.

Let the Democrats forward the ‘fixes’ and then watch as Obama has to decide if he will veto or support. (No matter what they do, unless they repeal and replace, the clusterfark will continue.)
