Quotes of the day

posted at 10:31 pm on November 12, 2013 by Allahpundit

President Bill Clinton — the man President Barack Obama once dubbed his “Secretary of Explaining Stuff” — once again has some explaining of his own to do with the Obama White House.

In an interview released Tuesday, Clinton called for a fix to the Affordable Care Act that would put an end to the wave of insurance cancellations that have been a public relations disaster for the White House and prompted Obama to apologize last week for having repeatedly assured Americans that they could keep their insurance if they liked it.

Clinton’s endorsement of legislation to address the cancellation issue again put the former president in a place Obama had refused to go — a familiar spot for the Oval Office’s current occupant…

Aides to Hillary Clinton did not respond to a request for comment about whether Bill Clinton’s views reflect her own.

***

House speaker John Boehner says in a statement that he agrees with former president Bill Clinton when it comes to “honoring the committment” President Obama made that if Americans like their health plans they can keep them.

“I applaud President Clinton for joining the bipartisan call for President Obama to keep his promise to the American people,” said Boehner in his statement. These comments signify a growing recognition that Americans were misled when they were promised that they could keep their coverage under President Obama’s health care law. The entire health care law is a train wreck that needs to go. And while the two parties may disagree on that point, it shouldn’t stop reasonable Democrats from working with us to shield Americans from its most egregious consequences – like the millions of current health plans being canceled.”

***

Mr. Clinton’s comment adds to the already intense pressure on the White House from both political parties. It carries special weight given the former president’s role in Mr. Obama’s re-election bid and Mr. Clinton’s own long history of involvement with health care policy…

But it is unclear what kind of administrative fix the White House could propose that might satisfy the president’s critics and the Americans who are losing their insurance. White House officials say they do not want to embrace a solution that allows insurance companies to sell what they consider to be cheap and substandard policies.

One option would be for the administration to somehow compensate people who have been kicked off their policies and now face higher premiums for better coverage. But it is not clear how the White House would propose to pay for such a plan, or whether it could do it without legislation.

***

“We have created a tiff – in the media – we have created a tiff between President Clinton,” Belcher continued before Blitzer interrupted him.

“We created Bill Clinton?” the CNN anchor asked. “How did we create Bill Clinton?”

“We’re reporting that – what Bill Clinton is saying which is, in fact, exactly what the president said to NBC,” Belcher submitted. “He talked about how we should fix this and people who want to keep their health care plans, we should work out a way to fix this.”

“There is not an inch of difference between where Bill Clinton is and where the president is,” Belcher concluded. “This is a creation of the media.”

***

Dem leaders are also pressing members internally with the case (which they are also making publicly) that the Upton plan would essentially preserve the worst aspects of the individual insurance market — allowing discrimination against people with preexisting conditions and allowing higher charges to women — thus undermining Obamacare’s protections, the source says.

The source adds that Bill Clinton’s widely reported comments today are not making this any easier for Democrats. Clinton said that “the president should honor the commitment” made to people who want to keep their insurance, “even if it takes a change in the law.” This sounded a bit like Clinton was trying to echo Obama’s own similar comments to NBC last week — in which he agreed a fix was necessary for these folks and said such a fix is forthcoming – but made a hash of it. However, Clinton’s spokespeople have not clarified the remark — which has also been distinctly unhelpful for Dems, according to my source — and so the damage is done.

***

Hours after Clinton’s comments, the U.S. Senate’s No. 2 Democrat, Richard Durbin of Illinois, said that although the White House has long resisted alterations to the Affordable Care Act, Democrats should be open to “constructive changes” to improve the law also known as Obamacare.

Another influential senator, California’s Dianne Feinstein, issued a statement shortly afterward, saying that she would join Senator Mary Landrieu, a Louisiana Democrat, in sponsoring a bill that would allow Americans to keep their current insurance plans, even if the plans do not meet the new law’s standards for coverage.

“Too many Americans are struggling to make ends meet,” Feinstein said in a statement. “We must ensure that in our effort to reform the healthcare system, we do not allow unintended consequences to go unaddressed.”

***

The irony of Bill Clinton coming out to advise that Obamacare be changed — somehow — to let everyone keep their current plans is that he’s the reason Obama made the disastrous promise in the first place.

Veterans of the effort to pass Clinton’s health-care plan believed that their core mistake was producing a plan that upended the insurance arrangements of almost every American…

In this, the plan violated the fundamental paradox of health-care polling, which is that even though most Americans believe the health-care system is a mess, they’re reasonably happy with the insurance they have…

But it’s a bit rich for Clinton to argue for a plan that leaves everyone’s insurance unchanged. When he managed this policy process, he believed the optimum policy upended almost everything. He knows that it’s functionally impossible to reform the health-care market if you upend nothing. This is the kind of argument that, in another context, Clinton would be delighting in explaining, carefully and persuasively, why it’s so very wrong.

In the Keep Your Plan Act of 2013 they need to put in some contingencies. If certain targets aren’t met next year, then much of Obamacare is rolled back. For example, if the money allocated to it cannot sustain it, it then needs to be scaled way back and replaced.

But not replaced with “single payer,” but I really think we should put in a replacement if possible. Maybe a bipartisan replacement can be like McCain’s 2008 health plan, with decent mechanisms to help those the preexisting conditions, and the poor (but without HUGE expenditures!).

Another thing to consider when trying to come up with “replacements” for Obamacare is the free-market oriented medical system in Singapore.

In Singapore there is active dynamic price competition, and everyone has (mandatory) health savings accounts, so everyone pretty much purchases their own medical care, so the cost of medical service is something insane like 80% less than here: http://www.amazon.com/Affordable-Excellence-Singapore-Healthcare-Story/dp/0815724160

even Kristen Powers is tired of the authoritarian left telling her than she was a dumb bitch to buy a substandard plan

so funny…morons

and, in other news, it looks like the GOPe is panicked…trying to paper over the civil war on their side of the aisle. You know, the one where McCain bitched about the angry birds, and the Chamber has promised to slap down any opposition to its immigration plan.

you know, the civil war that Rove so happily waged smearing various candidates that stood up to the powers that threaten the sweet deal he gets. That civil war.

So do the Insurance Companies get any say at all in which customers they want to insure and via which types of plans?

Or, do the Insurance Companies just have to do whateve President Obama tells them to do?

Things sure do get complicated when private companies start working with Socialists.

Good comment in support of Upton’s bill by Athanasius in the earlier thead:

They aren’t trying to make it more palatable. Upton’s bill has two effects: 1) if it actually works to get people back their plans, it effectively makes Ocare completely unworkable, thus making repeal more likely at some point. He is not trying to “salvage” Obamacare, but put the fatal nail in the coffin. 2) It makes the political point that the GOP finds Obama’s lying reprehensible, and stands with those millions of people to whom he lied. That sounds like pretty good politics to me.

anotherJoe on November 12, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Repeal don’t alter the thing for goodness sakes.

Oh and I swear I saw Obama’s twin today on my way to work. I seriously did a double take. He had the ears and everything.

“Cheap and substandard” is in the eye of the beholder, and the WH/administration should know all about cheap and substandard. The American people have been suffering under cheap and substandard governance from Obysmal and his Dem enablers for longer than I can tolerate.

The buyer of health insurance should be the only determiner of what policy fits his/her own needs. End of story.

essentially preserve the worst aspects of the individual insurance market — allowing discrimination against people with preexisting conditions and allowing higher charges to women — thus undermining Obamacare’s protections, the source says.

This argument is absurd on its face. There were and can continue to be health insurance offerings of high-risk pools for those with pre-existing conditions. Statistically, too, women are a biggest consumers of health care. Why shouldn’t their premiums be higher?

Let’s also take a hard look at some of the other “goodies” of Obysmalcare and ask why those who have been responsible consumers of healthcare/health insurance should pay the freight for nonsense.

Any expansion of subsidies to address this train wreck will only hurt the taxpayers. Who is kidding whom here?

Repeal this legislation and allow the American people to enjoy status quo ante.

onlineanalyst on November 12, 2013 at 10:59 PM

I wish someone would tell the truth about this because keeping your plan is no longer an option. What Republicans should be saying is that, as much as we’d like to pass some magic legislation where you can keep your plan, that’s done, finished, It was finished the day the Democrats passed a law that gave the administration too much leeway in writing the rules for it. It was finished the day HHS started writing rules that forced insurance policies to be cancelled if they didn’t meet the criteria in those rules. It was finished the day the Democrats decided they could pass a bill with little Republican input and no Republican votes and force it on all Americans. So, we’d love to pass a bill to make this all better but it’s going to take a lot more than that and, regrettably, it appears the President and the Democratic Party still want to play politics with your health care and not sit at the table and try to fix our health care system. The only way for that to happen is for the American people to feel more pain, because the Democrats right now are not worried about your pain they’re worried about your votes. When the time comes that they’re more concerned about your pain than your votes, this thing will be fixed. If that time doesn’t come before next November, I certainly hope you’ll vote a straight Republican ticket for the House and Senate because, we will fix it and fix it right with, or without, the help of the President, if we have enough of a majority.

There’s your message Republicans, now run with it.

In January or February, when the blades of the fan are almost at standstill due to the sh!t sticking on them, the Rs should roll out a fix that (1) repeals O-care in its entirety and (2) replaces it with a market-based program that deals with the real issues of pre-existing illnesses, portability, and keeping your own doctors/hospitals.

Now, of course, such a fix will not pass (the Senate, or maybe it will, now) or, if it does pass, let’s let President 404 veto it. It’s a win, win.

I’d like to say that before I vote a ‘straight’ ticket for any party… I want to see what they do about this mess.

If the GOP crosses the isle to help ‘fix’ Obamacare with the Democrats… I’m not voting for them.

Repeal is the only viable way forward. There is no fix for the mess the Democrats have created and if I see any move toward a ‘bipartisan’ piece of legislation that does anything other than repeal Obamacare, particularly if it leaves the IPAB intact, I won’t vote for any congress member who has a hand in it.

The GOP has betrayed us on too many occasions recently to expect they will necessarily do the right thing this time.

The bastages are going after self insured now, they ARE NOT LETTING UP!! They cannot and will not allow biz that pay for their employees HC costs cuz they do not use any kind of Ins what so ever, so Obama and the dems are going after this last bastion of self insurers…

It ain’t over…

Ever see a three year old throw a tantrum? The LEFT isn’t going to let this go just because Americans are suffering and even dying. It’s going to have to be taken from them.

REPEAL.

exactly Jackie. Single Payer has been their wet dream for decades. They are even more delusional now as it is in their grasp. They won’t give it up.

Good evening, TXUS. :) I hope you’re well this evening.

Oops. I got an error message on the link. Of course… with the political class we have…and Obamacare… that’s quite apropos.

Precisely.

I see this as make or break time for the GOP. They will either stand with the American citizens who elected them…and REPEAL OBAMACARE… or they will stand with their brethren of the political class across the aisle and try to ‘fix’ it.

If they do anything other than REPEAL, I will never vote for any member of the political class who has a hand in it.

im surprised no ones posted the

Thank you very much, was kind of you. Just the political stuff is bringing me down. We can’t change anything and then have to watch our “leaders” dump on us or cut and run.

arnold ziffel on November 12, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Thank you, President Obama! I signed up for ObamaCare just two short weeks ago and it was so easy. I got though the whole application and approval process through that fantastic new web site and in less than 5 minutes on my very first try. And the results are amazing. My acne has cleared up, all the grey has disappeared from my hair, I’ve lost 2 inches from my waist and I can now read the fine print on the eye chart. I feel at least 25 years younger. Thank you, President Obama!!!

I agree. They shouldn’t step back from their repeal position or help “fix” Ocare. The Ds should be made to come begging to them for help with this disaster.

I don’t see it though. Just reading about the budget conference and the D asks (revenue, revenue, revenue), they are too far gone at this point.

I’ve got news for the RNC…I’m not settling again.
