When mass shootings don’t matter… to the media

posted at 8:01 am on November 8, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

First, the bad news: as you’ve no doubt heard, there was another mass shooting. Nine people shot, three dead. The good news: A “person of interest has been taken into custody.

DETROIT – A convicted felon who was wearing body armor when police arrested him in a Detroit suburb will be questioned in an investigation into the fatal shooting of three men in a back gambling room of an east side barbershop.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig described the man as a person of interest in Wednesday evening’s shooting at Al’s Barber Shop that left six other people wounded. Speaking at a Thursday news conference at police headquarters, Craig said the bloodshed may have stemmed from an ongoing feud.

Craig did not name the person of interest and provided few details about the arrest. He said Rochester police picked up the man north of Detroit without incident on an unrelated felonious assault charge.

That’s pretty terrible. And of course, the reason you must know about it is that the press must be all over this story, right? Well… not so much. I heard seond hand that CNN had done a fifteen second throw before commercial on it. Buzzfeed managed five whole sentences about it. ABC News put up a 26 second video segment. Huffpo – always quick like a bunny to talk about the evils of guns when so much as a single person is injured – managed a fair number of paragraphs. But it was entirely factual, with no opinions on the causes, the evils of society or what have you. In short, this story essentially hit the mute button wall shortly after it hit the air.

Why is this? Could it be that the shooter(s) and the victims didn’t fit the right profile?

Lorne Carter told the Detroit Free Press that he was smoking a cigarette against the wall of a nearby business when he heard what sounded like 30 to 40 rapid shots.

Detroit has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country. Including Wednesday night’s barbershop slayings, 289 criminal homicides have been committed so far this year in Detroit.

Criminal homicides accounted for 386 of the 461 death investigations in 2012.

“Anytime you have … shootings of nine, it certainly does rise up as one of Detroit’s more violent incidents,” Craig said.

Craig said one person was shot and three others wounded during a shooting in October 2012 on the city’s west side. Seven teenagers _ including five students at Cody Ninth Grade Academy _ were shot and wounded while waiting at a bus stop near that school in June 2009.

This took place on the East side of Detroit. I wonder what could be missing from this story which prevents the scholars at MSNBC and CNN and the New York Times from launching into a lengthy tirade on the evils of guns and the deplorable lack of safety for citizens? Could it, perchance, be that the shooter didn’t fit a particular profile? Were the victims, gathered together in a back room for an evening of gambling, not quite sympathetic enough figures? Were their lives somehow less valuable or the shooter not quite evil enough? Or – just maybe – does this shooting not fit the right profile to make tasty political sausage? Does the fact that this city already has some of the most restrictive gun restriction laws in the country make it somehow less newsworthy?

Things that make you go “hmmm.”

rbj on November 8, 2013 at 8:08 AM

the bloodshed may have stemmed from an ongoing feud.

There is no mention of race anywhere in the story but, like Chicago or New Orleans, black-on-black shooting in Detroit is so commonplace that it isn’t even reported most of the time. The weapons in these crimes are not legally obtained or registered. So, for the gun grabbers, there really is nothing worth noting.

Well, if that “scientific” study linking racist whites to guns holds any water, they must have been white. Also racist. Probably a bunch of those TEA party types too, what with their notions of individual responsibility and limited government.

You know, a typical Detroit resident.

Also, Baltimore is one homicide away from the 200 club, must be due to those lax gun laws MD just passed.

The reason is obvious why the story got buried by the national news liberal medis

happened in a highly restritive gun area
shooter was black and so were the victims
the victems were adults
the entire group was involved in criminal activity
the shooter had a criminal record and was breaking the law by having a weapon
the city has one of the highest levels of minority on minority murder rates in the country.
and finally
no whites were involved

With all the tongue-wagging going on in the media about racist gun-toting tea partiers, they don’t realize their own racist actions. In not giving this mass murder more coverage, they’re stating quite clearly that white suburbanites are more valuable than inner-city blacks.

But, you know, the tea party is racist and all.

Pope Linus on November 8, 2013 at 8:25 AM

sniffles1999 on November 8, 2013 at 8:17 AM

When I was living in Michigan (other side of the state from Detroit), there were gang wars going on between blacks and Hispanics. Not once was this fact acknowledged by the police or media. Night after night of “isolated” shootings on the south side of the city.

The reason I finally got out of a policeman I knew, you don’t have a “gang war” in town if you never call it a gang war. And so long as the only victims were black and Hispanic gang members the community-at-large is mostly uninterested. I suspect that this story is much the same. Whatever the hell was going on really doesn’t matter to the residents inmates of Detroit so long as it doesn’t spill over into their lives.

I live in the Detroit area, and I was thinking about the complete lack of coverage of this story by the usual media hacks yesterday. A guy goes into a New Jersey mall and kills no one but himself. Wall to wall coverage. Ten people shot, three of them killed, in a single incident in Detroit and crickets.

Happy Nomad on November 8, 2013 at 8:38 AM

“Does the fact that this city already has some of the most restrictive gun restriction laws in the country make it somehow less newsworthy?”

Jazz you are wrong here. Detroit’s gun laws are the same as the rest of Michigan’s. Michigan is now a shall issue state. When Michigan loosened their gun laws up a few years ago, Detroit’s car jacking a plummeted. The reason? Because pistol packing granny’s started shooting at cracked up car jackers when they tried to take granny’s Caddy.

That said, Detroit has nothing like Chicago’s insane restrictive gun laws. The only restriction to thwart residents in Detroit from packing legally is if they are a felon or not. That is the only angle you have to claim Detroit has restrictive gun laws.

Happy Nomad on November 8, 2013 at 8:38 AM

No idea. I suppose it’s possible that the motives are being embargoed by the local media, but I doubt it. I think that no one is talking to the media. The victims were involved in, or knowledgeable of, criminal activity at this barber shop. They aren’t going to talk to the media. And the police have not charged anyone yet, so they are holding their cards close to their vest until formal charges are brought. We don’t even know who the person of interest is, yet.

Nine people shot, three dead.

Obviously these people do not have adequate gun control. They need to spend more time at the range improving it. At this rate the body count will remain ridiculously low relative to shots fired.

Oldnuke on November 8, 2013 at 10:33 AM

As a resident of Southeastern Michigan, I wondered as well about this. The morning after the shooting, I turned into the TODAYShow to see if this would be a lead story. No mention at all.

The simple truth is, the media can’t spin this as an act perpetrated by “A White, male, NRA supporting, possible Tea Party Member who bought an “assault” rifle (gun, whatever) legally from a store.”

This story should be emailed to every news anchor in the networks, and ask for a comment as to why it was not covered like the crazy loon who was shooting escalators in a mall before committing suicide.

Try all caps next time. It means you’re shouting.

1) The in-depth reporting on this issue has not provided us with facts to determine if this was murder or a friendly game of Crips and Bloods that got out of hand.

2) The in-depth reporting on this issue also leaves us wondering what the biographies of those who got shot would say. I’ll concede that the reporters might be having trouble locating childhood photos of the wounded and dead.

3) When do you think we’ll learn how many times the “person of interest” has dialed 9-11 in the last decade?

This is but a very short list of data points that we require as a society in order to form the correct judgement of the individuals involved in the story.

I’m sure we’ll be getting this info, and more, very soon. Justice demands it.
