Obama: What we said was, you can keep your plan if it hasn’t changed since ObamaCare was passed

posted at 11:21 am on November 5, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via RCP. I posted the key quote last night in the Greenroom but figured you’d want to hear him say it, as proof that he really is willing to lie this shamelessly even when the entire country knows he’s lying. Reporters are laughing at him today:

Ron Fournier went to the bother of fact-checking “the lie about the lie” while Tapper reminded his Twitter followers that the White House once sneered that alleged “facts” like keeping your plan if you like it are stubborn things. Via NRO, watch below as former Newsweek editor Jon Meacham wonders just how stupid Obama thinks we are. Both Gallup and Reuters have his job approval at 40 percent; I wonder if this won’t finally nudge him into the 30s.

Rich Lowry imagines what an honest speech about ObamaCare might have looked like circa 2009:

But let me be clear again — and Axelrod hates this part [Laughter] — many of you are going to pay more than you did before. Maybe double. Because all of these new regulations cost money. You don’t believe in a free lunch, do you? [Confused murmurs.]

What we’re proposing is to get young, healthy people onto the exchanges so they can subsidize everyone else, by buying coverage they don’t want or need at a price that is higher than before. Why would they do that, you ask? [Faint laughter.] That’s what the individual mandate is all about. We’ve got to force them.

As for the doctor you like, you might not be able to keep him or her, either. [Murmurs.] If you have to change your plan, your doctor may not be in the network. And to try to keep costs down, the networks in the exchanges are really narrow. By the way, top hospitals probably aren’t going to accept a lot of plans from the exchanges, either.

Some of my friends on my side of the aisle try to minimize all this. They say that the bill has a grandfather clause. Wait until you see the regulations we write on that one — there will barely be a grandfather clause left.

In an alternate universe, he gave that speech and ObamaCare got 40 votes in the Senate. In this universe, per Jamie Dupree, the White House website still features stuff like this. No joke:

wh

Here’s the clip. The Big Lie about the Big Lie comes at the beginning, but watch to the end to see how Obama spins the fact that many plans aren’t qualifying for grandfather status. He’s basically equating “better” coverage with more comprehensive coverage irrespective of cost. That’s slightly different from the standard Democratic lie that any plan that fails to qualify under the new regs must be cut-rate crap that’s unfit for American consumers. (See Karl’s post this morning for more on that.) Hard to sell the public on that idea when so many people are telling reporters how much they miss their old plan. So now, rather than disparaging the non-grandfathered stuff, O’s simply saying that the new stuff is superior because it covers more than the old plans did. The fact that the new stuff is also wildly more expensive in some cases seems not to matter to him when calculating whether one plan is “better” than another. You might end up in the poorhouse, but you’ll have gold-plated substance-abuse coverage when you eventually take up drinking to cope. You’re welcome, America.

” Opponents of health insurance reform may find the truth a little inconvenient, but as our second president famously said, “facts are stubborn things.”

Scary chain emails and videos are starting to percolate on the internet, breathlessly claiming, for example, to “uncover” the truth about the President’s health insurance reform positions.

For the record, the President has consistently said that if you like your insurance plan, your doctor, or both, you will be able to keep them. He has even proposed eight consumer protections relating specifically to the health insurance industry…”

Continue to More Choices, Greater Competition — Health Insurance Exchange

All Obamacare policies are now county based. What someone pays in San Francisco is much higher than in Los Angeles. In some counties, Democrats have introduced ‘choice’ in the form of one or, maybe, two carriers. Reminds me of an East German apparatchik: You can purchase the Trabant in Black…or Black…and, maybe, Midnight Pearl.

The ‘choice’ of healthcare providers has also shrunk.

The right wanted to increase competition by allowing companies to sell policies across state lines. The left believes that competition is increased by prohibiting policies from being sold across county lines.

‘Choice and competition’ should be filed alongside ‘timely, targeted and temporary’ – the tagline for the Superfragilisticexpialidocious Stimulus Act of 2009 and ‘If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. Period. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Period.’

You might end up in the poorhouse, but you’ll have gold-plated substance-abuse coverage when you eventually take up drinking to cope. You’re welcome, America.

Obamacare Is Junk Insurance

If these millions of cancelled plans are “junk,” then why are so many of the Obamacare substitutes so vastly inferior and more expensive?

Obamacare is making Robert Laszewski, a respected health insurance expert, lose his top-notch insurance plan, with which he “can access every provider in the national Blue Cross network … without higher deductibles and co-pays … Wellness benefits are without a deductible. It covers mental health, drugs, maternity, anything I can think of.”

Obamacare offers Laszewski a plan that costs 66 percent more each month, severely restricts his doctor network, and carries a deductible $500 higher than his old plan. So tell me – which plan is “junk?”

Such stories abound. At the Daily Beast, David Frum describes in greater detail what he had earlier summed up in one tweet.

“I already had a high-deductible plan,” he wrote. “Now I can buy a plan with double the deductible for only $200 a month more.” (My own experience shopping the D.C. exchange produced results similar to Frum’s.)

Washingtonian contributing editor Art Levine, an Obamacare supporter, wrote at the Huffington Post that he’s losing his relatively expensive ($530 per month premium) but comprehensive plan.

A comparable Obamacare plan will cost him twice as much. “The spin being offered now is that the plans being canceled by and large don’t cover mental health or reasonably-priced medications or maternity care,” he writes. “ But that’s simply not true, as my plan’s benefits indicate.”

L.A. Times guest blogger Matthew Fleischer is losing his “bare-bones” plan. Under Obamacare, he will pay 43 percent more each month for an even more bare-bones plan, with higher co-pays and an annual out-of pocket limit $1,450 higher.

As for the program’s subsidies, Fleischer notes that even if he could get his income down to $30,000 (not much in California), he would receive only about $40 per month, leaving him still paying more – and getting less in return if he ever gets sick.

When Obama claims your old plan was “junk,” he’s not leveling with you. Your health plan wasn’t canceled out of some kind of concern that you are insufficiently insured. Rather, you simply must pay more – and get less – to make Obamacare’s finances work.

Rather than prioritize federal or state government budgets to subsidize those with pre-existing conditions – treating them as the rare special cases they are – Obama chose to finance their care by making you pay more into the system and get less out of it whenever you eventually become sick. Someone out there is benefiting from Obamacare. It just isn’t you.

Middle-income cancellation victims are the Affordable Care Act’s first cash cow. Their insurance will now be less affordable and of lower quality – or to use the common phrase, “junk.”

Resist We Much on November 5, 2013 at 11:35 AM

Amazing how Obama thinks that whenever he wants he can just revise what he previously said. He says: “I’ve always said…” and the lemmings think that that’s what he’s always said. No. Now it’s clear as day. We got the tapes.

He didn’t say IF !!!

He said “period,” “no matter what,” and “case closed.” So he’s adding new obvious lies on top of old obvious lies. Doubling down on lying. And doubling down on stupid.

No, the entire country does not know that. Certainly more people will pay attention to the politics of this than usual when it affects them personally. But my guesstimate is that it will not dawn on at least 1/3 of the population that Obama lied, and another 1/3 will shrug and say “politics as usual”.

After years of telling the original lie, note how difficult it is for him to tell the audience what he was really saying all that time. If it were what he was really saying, it would roll off his tongue like his own name. Instead, he’s staring at his lectern notes to make sure that he’s got the language that he and the speech writers finally agreed on after 100 drafts over the past two days.

If Republicans were smart (yeah, I know), they’d already be running commercials showing Obama repeatedly spewing his “if you like you plan, you can keep your plan,” “if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor,” and “the average family’s health insurance premiums will go down by $2,500 a year” lies and contrast those lies with the ugly reality:

– you can’t keep your plan, and Obama knew that was a lie all along;
– your new plan will cost more, have bigger deductibles and co-pays than your old plan, and it will offer fewer healthcare providers;
– your premiums won’t go down by $2,500 — in fact, the average person’s premiums will go up by more than 40%.

In a longer version, they could point out that Obamacare is also going to increase the deficit (remember O’s promise that the law wouldn’t increase the deficit “by one dime”?).

So, the President of the United States of America, lied. And now, he is lying, in a desperate, but futile attempt to cover up that lie.

The fact that Obama only lies when his lips are moving, is not a revelation.

The problem is the irrefutable fact that lies have consequences. And, in the case of Obamacare, the consequences apply to American lives.

SC.Charlie on November 5, 2013 at 11:54 AM

Obama needs to just eat the damn crow and be done with it.
Regardless, aside from approval ratings, what is it you think this error is going to bring about?
Because it’s not going to undo the ACA. And as much as you wanna ignore all the good from this thing, the good exists and outweighs any hiccups.
So what’s the next step?
The next step is the Repubs getting on-board and working with the Dems to help sort out all the issues and keep this thing moving forward.
Do you think Repubs are gonna up their approval ratings by advocating for people to only have access to and afford to buy shi!ty insurance?
Are they gonna run ads that say “We feel insurance companies should be allowed to cancel your policy if you get sick.” ? Maybe these ads will feature the Obamacare ‘victims’ who are now denied the option to purchase junk policies and instead need to buy via the excanges, which they then end up preferring.

No, the GOP isn’t gonna do any of those things. They are gonna get on board and be part of all this. They’ll work with Dems on the next step – reform aimed at reducing health care costs and this premiums.
The ACA will succeed, it will be popular, and your grandchildren will know it as Obamacare.

What obama really meant to say was,
“You can keep your plan, if I like it.”

Regardless, aside from approval ratings, what is it you think this error is going to bring about?
Because it’s not going to undo the ACA. And as much as you wanna ignore all the good from this thing, the good exists and outweighs any hiccups.

I hope for your sake that delusion is covered by the ACA.

You know, this seems crazy, because of the obstinacy of Democrats in the Senate, but if enough of their constituents get so upset that they start calling for impeachment proceedings, who knows?

Obama messed with people’s health, a really bad crime against humanity, short of outright murder or assault.

Actually, Clinton was better at lying than Obama. He just didn’t engage in it as much as Obama does (as much as that seems unimaginable).

Bubba’s lies were designed to keep his wiener out of the news. He never attacked the people as a tyrant.
