NYT: Barack Obama just “misspoke” about keeping your plan, or something

posted at 10:01 am on November 4, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Remember, people, that the mainstream media stands ready to challenge the government and speak truth to power … in a Republican administration.  In a Democratic presidency, we get the Paper of Record’s editorial board shielding power by offering an untruth so bald and so ridiculous that it’s practically a parody of itself. Barack Obama promised on dozens, if not hundreds, of occasions that his Affordable Care Act would not force people out of the existing plans they liked and wanted to keep.  “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan,” Obama told people as late as the presidential debates in 2012 against Mitt Romney.  “No one will force you out of your plan,” he promised on other occasions.

Now that the lie has been thoroughly exposed, did the New York Times speak truth to power? Hardly (emphasis mine):

Congressional Republicans have stoked consumer fears and confusion with charges that the health care reform law is causing insurers to cancel existing policies and will force many people to pay substantially higher premiums next year for coverage they don’t want. That, they say, violates President Obama’s pledge that if you like the insurance you have, you can keep it.

Mr. Obama clearly misspoke when he said that. By law, insurers cannot continue to sell policies that don’t provide the minimum benefits and consumer protections required as of next year. So they’ve sent cancellation notices to hundreds of thousands of people who hold these substandard policies. (At issue here are not the 149 million people covered by employer plans, but the 10 million to 12 million people who buy policies directly on the individual market.)

But insurers are not allowed to abandon enrollees. They must offer consumers options that do comply with the law, and they are scrambling to retain as many of their customers as possible with new policies that are almost certain to be more comprehensive than their old ones.

Misspoke? Scooter Libby “misspoke” on one occasion and ended up with a felony conviction for it. Obama turned that promise into a mantra.  He  deployed it against critics on every occasion by insisting that people who pointed out the obvious — that coverage mandates will make risk pools more expensive and that plans would have to get cancelled to manage them — were just scaremongers, and that the ACA would just mean more people would get insurance.  “No one will take away your plan,” Obama promised repeatedly.

Misspoke.

Speaking of misspeaking, note well what the Times did in this argument.  They shifted the pledge from “plan” to insurance, as if the promise was “If you like Aetna, you can keep Aetna!” But that wasn’t actually the promise, and the people who had insurance weren’t getting tossed out of their plans anyway … at least not until ObamaCare got enacted, as Dianne Feinstein noted yesterday.  Obama promised that his bill wouldn’t disrupt existing insurance plans, and kept promising it for years after his own administration estimated it would disrupt up to two-thirds of existing plans.

Contra the Gray Lady, this actually does impact the 149 million Americans with employer-based plans.  When the employer mandate hits next year, that market will go through the same cancellation cycle as the individual markets this year did.  As many as 93 million Americans might find their employer-based plans either changed out or gone altogether, as HHS’ own data shows.

The motto of the New York Times is “All the news that’s fit to print.” Apparently, they misspoke when they wrote that.

Nothing new for the Old Grey Whore.

In March of 1991, the Fed announced that the economic recession that started in the late 1980s was over and the recovery had started. The NYT refused to “report” this info, and said economic recovery gained steam for the next 18 months, documented by Fed statistics. Since the NYT never mentioned it, they got a Democrat elected pResident in 1992. And that Democrat claimed credit for the economic recovery that in reality began 18 months before the Democrat Media got Clenis elected.

One day, the NYT Editorial Board finally admitted in print that the “Clinton Economy” had in fact started 18 months before they first got him elected. Their editorial appeared in…1999.

And they used weasel words then-they said the economic recovery that had begun in March of 1991 was unrecognized at the time.

Substitute the word “censored” for “unrecognized” and you have the truth.

Admittedly hindsight is 20/20…but this seems to go beyond that excuse. Wouldn’t have taken much to know that OF COURSE the old pray-you-never-get-sick policies wouldn’t be allowed under this law.

This WH is incapable of eating crow. They try to spin blatant lies by telling more blatant lies.

Even if the site worked well, it would be a blow-out issue.

This is the introduction to a length interview at the Daily Caller:

Expert: At least 129 million will ‘not be able to keep’ health care plan if Obamacare fully implemented

If Obamacare is fully implemented, 68 percent of Americans with private health insurance will not be able to keep their plan, according to health care economist Christopher Conover.

Conover is a research scholar in the Center for Health Policy & Inequalities Research at Duke University and an adjunct scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. In an interview with The Daily Caller, he laid out what he estimates the consequences of Obamacare’s implementation will ultimately be.

“Bottom line: of the 189 million Americans with private health insurance coverage, I estimate that if Obamacare is fully implemented, at least 129 million (68 percent) will not be able to keep their previous health care plan either because they already have lost or will lose that coverage by the end of 2014,” he said in an email. ”But of these, ‘only’ the 18 to 50 million will literally lose coverage, i.e., have their plans entirely taken away. This includes 9.2-15.4 million in the non-group market and 9-35 million in the employer-based market. The rest will retain their old plans but have to pay higher rates for Obamacare-mandated bells and whistles.”

Conover also says it is hard to imagine President Obama didn’t know these statistics when he was flacking for his health care bill by promising Americans they could keep their health insurance if they liked it.

Unlike the CBO, statistics and numbers are going to be outside the Democrats’ grip. Charlie Martin’s headline at PJM:

Arithmetic wins, every time.

Here’s a couple of simple examples, for a simple mind.

In December of 2000, the Supreme Court of the United States handed down 3 rulings against Democrat Presidential “candidate” Algore. Those 3 rulings were The Law. Yet senior members of your Democrat Party refused to accept those rulings as The Law, and tried to have them overturned.

Marriage between a man and a woman was The Law in Massachusetts. Your Democrat Party refused to accept that law, and they found 3 Activist Judges to overturn the results of a popular election.

Thanks for playing!

Another example of Lying and Law for our simple friend.

In his first term, (Democrat) pResident Bill Clinton had his Department of Justice successfully prosecute a female VA psychiatrist. She was accused of Breaking The Law.

In his second term, that same (Democrat) pResident broke the very same law, on the job no less. He and his Cultists, including senior members of the Democrat Party, then all claimed that he was exempt from the exact same law he had his DOJ use to prosecute someone else for breaking.

Del Dolemonte on November 4, 2013 at 2:39 PM

Hey verb, B just called. He’s enacted a new law. You have to comment on Del’s last post.
Sorry. It’s the law. Hey, just be glad you’re not one of the Mexicans that met the wrong end of B’s “concept of context” regarding our gun laws.

The Fall 2002 Authorization that Congress signed off on specifically cited WMDs. Since they signed off on it, that Resolution is just as much “the law” as O’bamacare is.

And since Congress did in fact sign off on it, that means that Bush wasn’t the only one making the WMD claims. Except to brain-dead Democrats, that is.

Del Dolemonte on November 4, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Ya – there is that part of it as well. Nearly ALL of the Dems signed off on it, and gave speeches about how we had to do something about Iraq.

But the point I’ve been making, whenever a libtard throws out the old “Bush lied about WNDs”, is that WMD is a broad term that includes multiple weapong types, and Iraq did in fact have some of those weapon types – so Bush did NOT lie about that.

Still nothing, eh verbaluce?

You lied because you didn’t think it would really hurt anything.

You don’t realize it because your moral compass doesn’t work properly, but that’s similar to why people don’t take you seriously regarding your stated position on the Benghazi investigations. You’re comfortable casually and unabashedly lying, so you don’t mind it in others so long as they’re on your team. You may even expect it for the any-means-necessary win.

After all, what they said wasn’t supposed to really hurt anything.

If I’m wrong link up or admit you were lying.

dentarthurdent on November 4, 2013 at 2:58 PM

Saddam Hussein himself was a WMD. So were his sons. As well as many in the so-called “deck of cards.”

And the (Democrat) Clinton Administration also legally found in 1998 (in their Federal Indictment of bin Laden) that he and Saddam Hussein were in cahoots in Iraq.

That legal ruling also carried the full weight of The Law. But in 2004 Democrats simply pretended that said Law never existed.

Marc Thiessen has an opinion piece at the WaPo calling out O’bama for The Big Lie. Plenty of verbaloonery in the comments there!

Did you fact check the WMD thingy??

OMG…this is coming from an ex Bush speechwriter?!

The idea of health care for the ununsured is abhorrent to tea persons who somehow do not make the connection to “their” Medicare.

The truth that is lost in all of this noise is the ACA is working in states were they established exhanges and expanded the medicaid for working poor.

I personally know LOTS of people who have already benefitted from the ACA. Some “train wreck”

Right wingers are such sore losers.

To me I do not see any lie. ACA is a brandy new program of which what was said about it then, was according to the plan.

This wouldn’t be the same Thiessen who ghost-wrote Wis. Gov. Scott Walker’s new biography, would it.

Obviously, Thiessen, has nothing against Republican politicians lying. After all, he also served as speech writer for another serial liar.

Thiessen has worked for two serial liars and helped them peddle their lies. Ergo, Thiessen’s entire article is dishonest to the core. He doesn’t believe it is bad for politicians to lie.

So Obama is a lying weasel. So what.

“It Burns!”

Why do you people try with Verbulace and his ilk? He is never going to engage in any honesty. He is a liberal. They can’t think, they can’t be honest, they can’t be rational.

To him, facts don’t matter. Results don’t matter. Reality does not matter. He cares only for pushing forward whatever will harm the U.S. and its citizens. He cares only for “the cause”.

Trying to get a liberal to be honest or admit a fact is like trying to get a whale to live on land. It is never going to happen.

When the revolution begins, hopefully mercy will not be shown to his type because they act will malice and evil intent in all that they do. The tree of liberty needs to be refreshed with the blood of tyrants, and lefties are nothing but fascists – thus their blood will do wonders for the tree of liberty.
