Homeland Security chief says mental illness a “major factor” in Ciancia shooting

posted at 3:31 pm on November 3, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

This probably should have come as no surprise to anyone with a better than room temperature IQ, but I suppose somebody had to say it.

The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee said on Sunday the suspect’s “mental illness” was a chief reason behind the shooting at Los Angeles International Airport.

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas) said the incident underscored “how easy it is to bring a gun into an airport.”

On Friday, a gunman opened fire at LAX Terminal 3, killing a TSA officer and wounding two others. The suspect, identified as Paul Anthony Ciancia, was shot four times by airport police and is in the hospital. His condition remains unknown.

McCaul said he had already spoken with TSA Director John Pistole about instituting reforms to create better coordination between TSA officials and local law enforcement. TSA officers, he noted, are particularly vulnerable because they’re unarmed.

Apparently, the fact that somebody pulls out a rifle in the airport terminal and begins shooting up TSA personnel isn’t enough proof of insanity for some folks though. There were immediately more than a few who tuned in their spider senses and detected an even greater evil on the wind. Or, at the very least, if he was crazy it was a special kind of crazy.

This man is very likely to be mentally ill so perhaps his violent impulses would have manifested in some way regardless of his influences. But it is worth noting that acts of violence like this often find expression in right wing paranoia. It may be that this ideology didn’t cause this person to take a gun and shoot people, we just don’t know enough facts to make that claim. But it’s certainly possible that it gave him a ready excuse for doing it.

See? We can’t come right out and prove that right wing ideology led to this. But it sure sounds good, doesn’t it? And that won’t stop us from suggesting it!

Welcome to the new normal. Any time some freak goes off the rails, if they choose to use the word “patriot” in any reference other than a Tom Clancy novel, this is what we’ll be getting.

They always blame the right when this kind of thing happens then it turns out that the nut job is a lefty. If this guy actually turns out to be more to the right look for the msm to make hay out of it and gun control will be next.

It will probably eventually come out that he voted for Obama twice.

I saw a photo this morning of Ciancia after he was shot. I do not think he’s going to make it. The head shot did him in even if he is still breathing.

I’m so confused. We need to DO something!!1!!1!!!

Flew thru LAX 10 years ago and we were able to get inside the terminal without going thru security; all we needed to do was show our tickets. We then went up an escalator to the next level and it was there that we went thru security.

Gunman, gunman, gunman. Next time I hear about a stabbing, I’d better hear something about a “knifeman.”

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Mike McCaul (R-Texas) said the incident underscored “how easy it is to bring a gun into an airport.”

It’s easy to push someone off the top of a building(buildingman) too…if you’re crazy. It’s easy to just run a lot of people over with one’s car(carman) as well, as we saw in Tokyo a couple of years ago, if one is so inclined. If government officials and concerned journalists want to protect us from the acts of crazy people with no inhibitions, I would have to put them on the list of crazy people(politician/journalists). Well, more like the stupid people(liberal) list.

What does that bullshit even mean?

Mentally ill individuals are killing people all over the place. Is it paranoia to scream at ignorant socialist azzhats that they need to face facts?

Oh wait. They are the ones who let the nut cases out of the psycho wards in the first place.

They refuse to face reality. They would rather lie about it. They are destroying society on just about every level. Their policies are killing people.

LAWA is determined to suck Ontario dry to satisfy union cronyism.

Free Ontario International Airport from the grips of the city of Los Angeles.

Scott Johnson at Power Line had this enlightening post yesterday, where a friend of his concludes that liberalism is, in fact, an addiction.

I’m always searching for a unified field theory of liberalism that reconciles its craziness, destructiveness and sanctimony. I thought the “liberalism is a mental disorder” meme came close, but in the end was too easy. It’s like having a madman as a villain in a story–you don’t have to explain, motivate or justify his behavior. It’s the difference between “Friday the 13th” and “Crime and Punishment.”

A recent sad experience with a friend undergoing rehab has left me with another analogue. I now think liberalism is an addiction and displays all the behaviors commonly associated with addictive behavior.

Well, not “liberalism” per se. That policy-agenda is really an elaborate metaphorical delusion built to camouflage the true drug these poor souls crave so desperately: moral superiority.

It’s as powerful as heroin or cocaine. It supplies a terrific high: all sense of personal failure, betrayal, guilt, ineffectiveness, irrelevance, of being nothing and nobody, disappears in a flash. Instead our hero feels extraordinarily good about himself. He is helping. He is compassionate. He is without sin. He is sensitive, caring, part of the solution and not the problem. He feels handsome, daring and heroic. He thinks it will get him laid. How could he not love this?

Read the whole thing.

Good collection of material on SPLC:

Rage on the Left: Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)

The origins of SPLC:

In the early 1960s, Morris Dees sat on the sidelines honing his direct-marketing skills and practicing law while the civil rights movement engulfed the South. “Morris and I … shared the overriding purpose of making a pile of money,” recalls Dees’s business partner, a lawyer named Millard Fuller (not to be confused with Millard Farmer). “We were not particular about how we did it; we just wanted to be independently rich.” …

…Today the SPLC spends most of its time – and money – on a relentless fund-raising campaign, peddling memberships in the church of tolerance with all the zeal of a circuit rider passing the collection plate. “He’s the Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker of the civil rights movement,” renowned anti-death penalty lawyer Millard Farmer says of [Morris] Dees, his former associate, “though I don’t mean to malign Jim and Tammy Faye.” The center earned $44 million last year alone – $27 million from fund-raising and $17 million from stocks and other investments – but spent only $13 million on civil rights programs, making it one of the most profitable charities in the country….

If he used the word “pigs” he might be a lefty. Plus, he also made remarks about being an equal opportunity shooter – Unlike the shooter in the Navy yard, who singled out whites (and may not have been completely nuts).

The press have been burned on pulling out the Tea-Party racist card and may realize now that the gun-control meme just gets Democrats tossed out. They are probably just relieved he was not a jihadi.

virgo on November 4, 2013 at 11:11 AM

“Mental illness a factor”? Well, TSA abusers have been making people crazy for so many years, I’m a little surprised it hadn’t happened sooner. One more excuse for disarming “mentally unstable” people, defined by NY state police to include someone who has been treated for “anxiety” in the last X number of years. But no focus will be put on not making people crazy in the first place, such as by pumping active grade schoolers (read: boys) full of psychotropic drugs like Ritalin ($500 million annual sales). No, if a solution doesn’t fit the meme, it’s not a helpful solution.
