CIA operatives in Benghazi to appear in closed Congressional hearing

posted at 8:01 am on November 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Congress has tried for more than a year to gain access to those who survived the terrorist attack on two American outposts in Benghazi, with little success — until now. Just days after an extensive report by 60 Minutes on the run-up to the attack and the lack of US response during the attack itself, the CIA will make witnesses available to the House Intelligence Committee for a closed session:

A House Intelligence subcommittee will hear from CIA security officers who are expected to tell a much more detailed story about the terror attack in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans last year, CNN has learned.

The men, described by sources as former Navy SEALs, former Army Special Forces and former Marines, were under contract to guard CIA agents on the ground there.

The security officers were among those who responded when Stevens’ compound was attacked on the night of September 11, 2012.

They will appear before lawmakers behind closed doors during the week of November 11, sources told CNN.

Did this have anything to do with the 60 Minutes report on Sunday?  The report explicitly criticized the CIA for not providing these witnesses, about which House Republicans have long and publicly complained.  The CBS report moved the needle enough to get Chris Matthews, who describes these same Republicans as “Benghazi obsessives,” to finally admit that the GOP had a point in demanding answers from Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration over why no response was provided.

CNN’s Drew Griffin thinks that question might get a lot more pointed.  According to his sources, the security contractors at the CIA annex were ready to respond four minutes after the first attack began. Who told them not to go?

Well, it wasn’t that they were told not to go. See, the intelligence website is hidden in Healthcare.gov code, and it was down…

It’s always taken the media to move the needle on White House scandals. That’s why Obama has managed to stay so squeaky clean. He has a wall of media support around him. None of them want to talk about Fast & Furious, IRS, DOJ, Benghazi, Healthcare.Gov or Obamacare in general, the NSA, National Park thuggery, or all of the other attempts by the White House to stifle free speech in this country.

Now, new information in the Washington Times reveals there were Delta Force personnel in Tripoli at the time of the attack and two members volunteered to be dispatched to Benghazi to assist in protecting the Benghazi compound, contrary to stand-down orders from the State Department.

Another flag officer involved in the Benghazi matter – which remains under congressional investigation – was Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette. He commanded the Carrier Strike Group.

He contends aircraft could have been sent to Libya in time to help the Americans under fire. He later was removed from his post for alleged profanity and making “racially insensitive comments.”

Army Major Gen. Ralph Baker was the commander of the Joint Task Force-Horn at Camp Lamar in Djibouti, Africa. Baker contended that attack helicopters could have reached the consulate in time on the night of the attack.

“To understand the insufferable assaults on our military and veterans, who should be exempt from political squabbles but are often at the forefront of Obama threats, we need to understand the psyche of the elite in this country led by Obama,” Brady said.

Despicable, that he allowed, that our president and secretary allowed brave men to battle for hours and never attempted to assist…unbelievable.

She’s also look swell testifying before congress during the next campaign. Republicans should issue subpoenas that disrupt the horrid wench’s campaign events. Then hold her in contempt when she doesn’t appear.

RobertE on November 1, 2013 at 8:54 AM

Does anyone know who is on this subcommittee and who its chair is?

I think that Mike Rogers is the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee itself,
however,I think there are whack jobs who are members: Peter King,
Louis Guiterez (sp) and Jan S from Illinois who are lefties through
and through. Not names a thinking person would want on an intelligence committee!

This sounds like a set up to me! CIA security officers testifying
about the failings of the CIA. They are letting “select” people
testify. Not all of them? BTW, do we know who “all” of them are?

Sorry, I am having trouble buying into this. It remains to be seen if the testimony provided is “better than nothing”.

Amjean on November 1, 2013 at 8:58 AM

I was watching Moaning Joe earlier. While railing about Obamacare and Obama’s ratings, Scarborough mentioned something in passing about Benghazi. His rant had something to do with Obama’s pattern of dishonesty. And, I think, one of the set clowns–a douche named Brian Schactman, who I guess has been added to give younger liberal women some eye candy–suggested that Benghazi was some GOP myth. Scarborough was very quick to admonish him, and the rest of the liberal clowns on set took note and left it alone.

I’m not a Scarborough fan, but I’m glad that he’s pointing out Benghazi in such a liberal precinct.

BuckeyeSam on November 1, 2013 at 9:01 AM

Obama is fundamentally a lazy sack of excrement.
He and his fellow worms probably figured that the easiest course of action that night would be to just let those four men die. It’s only four people, right? Hardly worth the effort and hassle it would take to rescue them, right? You go get some sleep, boss, it’ll all be over by morning.

I loathe these pieces of filth.

justltl on November 1, 2013 at 9:02 AM

I only hope that, if push comes to shove, the military will remember that enemies come in both foreign and domestic varieties, and stand on the side of the angels.

justltl on November 1, 2013 at 9:02 AM

It wasn’t just four though. Four died, but two of the four (Woods and Doherty) died because they were protecting dozens of Americans that Obama or Hillary or somebody in the chain of command decided to simply abandon that night.

If not for the extraordinary bravery of the two men who refused to exhibit the same level of cowardice and self-interest of their bosses, the death toll of Americans that night would have been higher.

No question about it.

I’m going to try to give Obama some slack here.
See, when we think of a President during a crisis, we picture an alert, focused and dedicated man glued to information sources and ready and willing to make command decisions.
We would never picture a President as some weed- or coke-addled community organizing poseur stumbling off to bed, leaving control to a group of inept subordinates lacking any true power to make those difficult command decisions.

So maybe he didn’t actually “decide” to abandon those Americans to their grisly fate. Maybe it’s just that the worm was curled up in bed with his roar on.

I’m trying to give him the benefit of the doubt here. Otherwise, I’m faced with the prospect of a willfully malignant and malicious POS as President who consciously committed dereliction of duty.

Johnnyreb on November 1, 2013 at 8:11 AM

Indeed. The initial Watergate break-in happened June 17, 1972,
Richard Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, and three months later, in the November 1974 mid-terms, Democrats flipped:

3 seats in the US Senate
49 seats in the US House
628 seats in state legislatures

In the wake of Porkulus and Obamacare, Republicans in the November 2010 mid-terms flipped:

6 seats in the US Senate
63 seats in the US House
680 seats in state legislatures

As Ed wrote in 2010:

GOP wins “all-time high” in state legislative seats
posted at 2:55 pm on November 4, 2010 by Ed Morrissey

Who could have suspected that Barack Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi would spark a national rejection of their party that outdid Watergate?

Yes, Obama was re-elected in 2012 (with a fair amount of fraud), but current outrage over the lies of Obama and Obamacare could make the 2014 mid-terms look a lot like the 2010 mid-terms.

And if we can get bi-partisan support to repeal Obamacare, we only need 290 Representatives and 67 Senators to repeal it and override Obama’s veto.

It is possible to repeal Obamacare, even with Obama in office. We need 2/3 of the House and Senate to do so. If enough Democrats put country before party, we can do it.

Hard to believe that the people testifying will have anything of substance to say that negates the Obama-Clinton story.

Having watched some of these Congressional panel’s work, it’s also hard to believe they’d ask any questions of substance that would lead to revelation.

Failure predicted. Sigh.

The greatest share of congressional hearings usually end up disclosing nothing, and closed door hearings disclose less that that. These hearings are done so that congress can say they are doing something while in reality all they do is make noise. Look at “Fast and Furious”, “The IRS”, amd “ObamaCare” hearing after hearing and it is still business as usual. Without the threat of prison time it’s all for moot.
