Valerie Jarrett: Obamacare doesn’t force you off your plan; your insurance company does, by complying with Obamacare!

posted at 10:01 pm on October 28, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

It’s just one tweet, but the sheer mendacity requires its own post. With the media finally in “now it can be told” mode since Obamacare passed and President Obama was reelected, pretty much everyone is admitting what all of us knew four years ago— that no, not everyone would be able to keep their plans if they liked their plans. And, yes, the Obama administration knew it just as sure as its critics did.

It was a lie and an obvious one, but the administration, much of the media, and Obamacare supporters happily acted as if it were true and happily smeared those who suggested otherwise. Tonight, the president’s right-hand woman tries the lie again, even as it’s demonstrably unraveling before the nation’s eyes.

Let’s try to walk through this inanity. There’s nothing in Obamacare that forces people out of their health plans. Instead, Jarrett asserts, insurance companies are just deciding to change their plans, throwing people off their current coverage.

She leaves out the part where Obamacare legally requires all health insurance plans to include a certain number of benefits that was above and beyond what many more, ahem, affordable plans offered, thereby making certain plans illegal. Many of those plans were plans that people liked and were assured they could keep. Obamacare offered a “grandfathering” clause, which the administration later eviscerated after it had served its political purpose, ensuring even more people would lose their current coverage. So, no change is required by you under Obamacare unless your insurance company goes and changes your existing plan to comply with Obamacare.

Update: This isn’t just one yes-woman’s delusion. It’s a talking point. Unbelievable:

Even the most reliably hacky Obamacare supporters have at least conceded that people are losing their old plans because of Obamacare. They spin it with the notion that these new plans are way better, so why would you have liked that dumb old plan anyway (which fit within your family’s budget and served you well)? But the act of spinning requires at least some reckoning with the truth.

What level of denial and/or mendacity is necessary to tweet this? What confidence that the media will be there to cover your lies? This is the mindset of the people surrounding President Obama, and because no one’s ever held accountable for screwing up, this is the mindset of those who are “fixing” Obamacare’s problems.

In this case, I think Jarrett’s confidence in media to toe her line is misplaced. The dam seems to be breaking, at long last, on this falsehood. But who could blame her for thinking it’d hold up? This is the level of compliance she’s used to.

Sadly, the truth comes too late for all those losing the plans they liked. They can use their cancellation letters to refute Jarrett’s lie, as one of my Twitter friends did, but it’s cold comfort. Maybe they should all CC Politifact:

Charles Cooke of National Review was refuting Jarrett’s tweet tonight when he attracted a response from a liberal Obamacare defender:

Total B.S., meet low-information voter. That’s why they do it. But this time, the truth is arriving in thousands of mailboxes, and costing each family thousands. It’s going to get harder to convince them they’re not seeing what they’re seeing.

Not much choice there. I mean Obamacare from the start was an expansion of the social security/medicare progressive ponzi. You can’t admit you’re flag ship policies, the ones for insuring your continuous control, are on the verge imploding on your watch.
So now the praetorian guard is in the contorted position of standing up, after years of wallowing in it to say, “Hey look at this! Good thing we didn’t step in it. Huh?”

The only people who will believe this are folks like Obama, who get into a car accident and think the insurance company should pay for everything. They don’t understand that insurance of any kind is wealth insurance and not your personal ATM.

Insurance policies change because of ACA, therefore cannot be grandfathered in.
MAGICAL, eh ??

pambi on October 29, 2013 at 10:48 AM

The problem with these statements is that the insurance companies are not voluntarily changing their ‘grandfathered’ plans causing them to lose their ‘grandfathered’ status.

The private insurance companies are being forced by the regulatory effects of the ACA to stop offering for sale any policy that does not provide all of the mandatory coverages required by the ACA, like maternity care and free contraceptives.
Athos on October 29, 2013 at 9:41 AM

This isn’t entirely true. There were policies that did not offer some of the mandatory coverages that were allowed to be grandfathered in. The exception was that if these plans are ever changed, they would then be required to meet the mandatory coverage requirements. Even a small, routine change triggers the requirement to meet the full mandatory coverage requirements.

She is splitting hairs and being disingenous, but the fact remains that grandfathered plans did not necessarily have to meet the mandatory coverage guidelines until the point they were “modified” from what they were before. My understanding is that a modification would include a routine premium hike regardless of amount.

Probably not – unless Obama has a secret camp training hundreds of thousands of Federal Employees to be doctors…….or maybe Obama will import them from Pook e stan???

pambi on October 29, 2013 at 10:48 AM

It was more like 40-60% of insurance policies change annually on average. We know these policies change. Let them keep their policy until it changes and then we can hit them with the full weight of the ACA requirements.

Are you watching the hearings underway in the House where the head of Medicare / Medicaid, Marilyn Tavenner is testifying?

I don’t know which is more aggravating, the mendacious pontifications of the senior Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee attempting to deflect and spin (in particular the senile Sander Levin and Charles Rangel combined with the uber-partisan fool, Baghdad Jim McDermott) or the evasions and spin of Tavenner who has claimed the system is working, just not as fast as they want?

Charles Rangel spent most of this time castigating the Republicans for not only not voting for Obamacare, but also for not voting for Social Security, 77 years ago…. refusing to acknowledge on the latter that his declaration was materially false.

In the very first series of questions, Tavenner wouldn’t even provide any numbers regarding applicants, enrollments, and the number of those enrollees who signed up for the expanded Medicaid coverage (which in most states is in excess of 90% of all enrollees).

Basically, Tavenner is well-prepared, and continuing the demonstration of the Administration’s contempt towards Congressional oversight – refusing to directly answer questions or step away from the accepted talking points.

Athos on October 29, 2013 at 11:04 AM

Still lost among the reporting on individual plan cancellations is the employer mandate. The Obama administration delayed the employer mandate (illegally) because employer plans will suffer the same cost escalation as the individual plans affecting most Americans with health insurance.

When confronted with steep rate increases, companies will have to decide whether to pay or to push their employees on to the Obamacare exchanges. The waiver/delay was granted to push the inevitable anger/backlash past the 2014 elections.

archer52 on October 29, 2013 at 10:56 AM

I find it amazing that the biggest proponents of single payer are often the biggest opponents to single provider.

My typical challenge to liberals is to offer to entirely cut out the middle man (insurance). Let’s just have all hospitals and clinics run by the government. No more faith-based hospitals. No more not-for-profit hospitals. No mroe for-profit hospitals. Only government hospitals, clinics, urgent care centers, and emergency rooms. No bills, no payments. Doctors, nurses get paid directly by Uncle Sam. Everyone gets the same level of care regardless of income or socio-economic status. What could go wrong?

If liberals think government is so great it could run the entire insurance industry effectively, why not socialize all medicine in the US instead?

The truth is, they are terrified of being subject to actual government-run healthcare. This is one belief that is shared by all Americans. Liberals just act like they like it as long as they aren’t subject to it.

weaselyone on October 29, 2013 at 11:11 AM

And remember, all of this is to “help” significantly less than 1% of our total population.

Well, nominally.

The real goal is to control the population’s health care and reduce the population’s self sufficiency.

As we’ve seen in the various European states once you go past a certain point of governmental control there is no way to back out no matter how bad things get.

And amusingly we are now debating not *if* socialized medicine will lead to things like death panels, but whether or not they are a good thing.

The only surprise is Britain is leading the effort to bring back Aktion T-4 now, not Germany.

If you like the service level the DMV or Post Office provide you can keep the level of service they provide for your healthcare. If you don’t, become an elected Democrat.

weaselyone on October 29, 2013 at 11:11 AM

They tried to implement Obamacare as a single payor program in 2009. It’s just that even with the supermajority held in the House and Senate, they lacked the votes of their own caucus to implement a single payor solution. What was implemented was seen as a path to single payor – a compromise / bridge that would set the ground work for single payor in 15 to 20 years. Even then, it took lies and sweetheart deals to get the votes needed in the House (passed by 6 votes) and Senate (passed by reconciliation to avoid a cloture vote) to pass the law.

The jacobin progressive-fascist-statists aren’t terrified by totalitarian government control. They are the elite. They are the smartest in the room. They are the only one’s qualified to make the decisions for everyone else. They are the government. They know quite well that a different set of rules apply to them, because they make the rules.

It’s not unlike the old joke about the Soviet Union in the 1970′s. Leonid Brezhnev was proudly showing his elderly mother what he had accomplished – his extravagant large Moscow apartment, his servants, his limo, the special stores filled with western goods he had access to, and his dacha on 100 acres in a forest outside of Moscow. After showing all this, he asked if his mother was proud of his accomplishments. She said yes, but was very worried about his future in the events that the Reds took back power and decided to punish the elite.

I’m almost more sick of the Republicans, who act as if this is all just business as usual and mince and tiptoe around the snarling circle of leftists beasts feasting on the fallen noble stag of our republic. F*ck them all.

Our company plan was changed as of Dec 1 by our insurance to rate each person covered by their age, not as part of the company pool. They said this was “a more appropriate way” to price the premiums. Oh, and our deductible doubled. My premium went up 45%. If I want my old plan back, my premium will double.

The meme is being pushed that if your plan changed it was because it was sub-par in some way. This is just simply not true in our case, and I doubt we are the only ones.

I had coverage equal to an expensive Silver level exchange plan. $1000 deductible, $20 co-pay, no co-insurance, $2500 out of pocket, the ability to go out of network for a 20% co-insurance, coverage for mental health, substance abuse, maternity care and re-hab., all the “extras” the ACA now requires every plan to have.

This far exceeded the minimum ACA coverage level, which is the Bronze level which can have a $6000 deductible, $6350 out of pocket AND 40% co-insurance even on office visits.

Sorry to bore you all with the details, but the idea that the KOS Kidz and assorted idiota are pushing is that it is your fault if your plan got more expensive because you had a crappy plan.

Some of the states got waivers for their big groups to stay the same, in NYS my family members, who are self employed and covered by insurance from a group requested a waiver from HHS and got it. That is what the waivers were all about, a liberal state knew to get the waivers thru their governors for certain things like large group industry insurance plans.

Interesting, Texas applied for a waiver to run a low income health plan, and they were refused, and now i hear Arkansas being praised for what they have done outside the ACA with a waiver, and incidentally, the success of the Original Romney care, had a waiver to use Medicaid money to help low income people buy mini plans. But those are banned now. Scott Brown was going to ask for the proper waivers for MA, but John Kerry and Duval Patrick stood in his way and said all those people want to go on Medicaid. No waiver was obtained also, for the successful but, expensive, unpopular small business insurance plan in MA, and the ACA one is layer over the top, and people here are shocked! shocked!

Meanwhile, over at Daily Kos the top headline is:

Medicaid enrollments surging under Obamacare, and that’s a good thing

Just as everyone has been saying all along: Obamacare was built to fail. These exchanges and this website are supposed to fail. People are supposed to get kicked off their private insurance and into Medicaid. Medicaid is going to fail soon after that and then the next step is single payer, public medicine.

Liberals, are right; it is too late to stop Obamacare. It is the law of the land and the destruction of our private medical insurance system is already under way. Conservatives, libertarians, and non-Marxists need to quit fighting the last battle, Obamacare, and start getting ready to fight the next battle: saving private medical care.
