Sebelius: Obama didn’t know about website problems until after launch

posted at 10:01 pm on October 22, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham

Hey, he reads about every other crisis in the paper. Why not this one, too?

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNN’s Sanjay Gupta that President Obama was completely clueless about serious problems with HealthCare.gov pre-launch. This despite troubles with the minimal testing done on the site and serious concerns from insurance companies, who were even pushing for delay.

President Barack Obama didn’t know of problems with the Affordable Care Act’s website — despite insurance companies’ complaints and the site’s crashing during a test run — until days into its now well-documented abysmal launch, the nation’s health chief told CNN on Tuesday.

In an exclusive interview with CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius admitted that there is concern in her department and the White House over the technical debacle surrounding the Obamacare website rollout, saying “no one could be more frustrated than I am and the president.”

The site was supposed to make it simple for people to search and sign-up for new health care policies starting on October 1, but instead it’s been clunky and, at times, inoperable.

“We’re not at all satisfied with the workings of the website,” Sebelius said. “We want it to be smooth and easy and let consumers’ compare plans.”

So, was the president so very uninterested in making sure his legacy law got launched with a modicum of competence that he never checked to make sure this was going well? Is he so surrounded by yes men and women that no one could bring themselves to tell him about this? Was Sebelius just straight-up lying to him day in and day out? Or, is she taking one for the team because he knew there were problems and was too stubborn to delay? I have pretty low expectations for Obama and government in general, but I remain a bit mystified at just how negligent it appears he was. If there’s one thing he is intensely interested in, it’s his own legacy, right?

Sebelius’ star continues to rise in this interview. Check out the tone she strikes. Gupta asks if she should resign, to which she replies, she serves “at the pleasure of the president.”

She uses the bogus giant traffic excuse yet again, even though the Washington Post reported some 2,000 users crashed the site in testing.

She declares there is reason for optimism in the Obamacare launch because, you see, there are so very many people lawfully required to buy insurance being prevented from buying it by this website. It’s not a crisis; it’s an opportunity! It’s a crisitunity.

“What we’re seeing in not only the states that are run by the federal website, but states around the country, is that interest is huge,” she said. “People are eager to have this affordable product, and that product is there.”

She admits she hasn’t tried to sign up using HealthCare.gov because “I have insurance.” Nice. The hundreds of thousands of people losing theirs and with no way to sign up for new, crappier plans appreciate the knife-twisting, Kath.

And, finally, this classic Kinsleyan gaffe: “We anticipated at the outset that everyone would never use the website,” she said.

The entire interview is below, and no, there is nothing in it that suggests they have any idea how to fix this thing.

Are we to believe this administration is so negligent they don’t tell the President of the United States that the roll-out of his signature achievement has problems? Everything I’ve ever read about communications, in previous administrations, is the Chief Executive is always informed of problems, it’s the job of those surrounding the President to keep him informed for fear that he’ll find it out somewhere else.

This President is the most protected President ever. These people lie through their teeth so he never has to answer the tough questions or be responsible for anything. It’s been this way since day one and he was re-elected.

I can remember the rumors the press spread about Reagan being disengaged and they made that out to be a bad thing, (Not that I ever believed it was true) but this guy is fronted as being uninformed and disengaged and they promote that as a marvelous management style.

Someone needs to hold Pravda, Izvestia with a Touch of TASS responsible for this. They are not doing their jobs.

bgibbs1000 on October 22, 2013 at 10:08 PM

…or more likely, was given her marching orders by the White House today that she was going to take the fall, and that from, here on in the official White House spin would be Obama never knew about the healthcare.gov debacle, because Sebelius failed to inform the president.

It’s sort of like the kinder, gentler version of the old 1930s show trials, where Bukharin and others confessed their failures supposedly in exchange for being rehabilitated by the regime … but were ordered shot by Uncle Joe anyway. In this, case, Sebelius’ interview and claim that Obama was kept out of the loop is basically her pre-signed letter of resignation, so that if the website debacle fails to improve, Team Obama can fire her and basically claim that they now deserve a ‘reset’ button from the public and the big media because they’ve eliminated the main problem with the ObamaCare roll-out (and they’ll get the button from the media, though I’m not sure how the public’s going to react the closer we get to National Insurance Plan Cancellation Day for millions of people on Dec. 31).

Someone please point out the difference between these 2 scenarios…

Before Obamacare if you had no insurance because you didn’t have enough money, you rarely went to the doctor, if you did you self paid and if something catastrophic happened they sent you a bill, you didn’t pay the bill and then the cost was passed on to policy holders and other taxpayers.

After Obamacare you have a 12k premium per year Bronze plan that is subsidized by other policy holders and taxpayers, you rarely go to the doctor because the deductible is 9k and if something catastrophic happens the insurance company pays and then passes on the cost to other policy holders and taxpayers.

What has this monstrosity solved?????

British NHS May Soon No Longer Offer Free Care

“Coinciding with challenges in the rollout of the U.S. Affordable Care Act are challenges for NHS. The Independent reports, ‘A National Health Service free at the point of use will soon be “unsustainable,” if the political parties do not come forward with radical plans for change before the 2015 election, top health officials have warned. Stagnant health spending combined with ever rising costs and demand mean the NHS is facing “the most challenging period in its 65-year existence,” the NHS Confederation said … In a frank assessment of the dangers faced by the health service, senior officials at the confederation say that the two years following the next general election will be pivotal in deciding whether the NHS can continue to provide free health care for all patients. “Treasury funding for the service will be at best level in real terms,” they write. “Given that demand continues to rise, drugs cost more, and NHS inflation is higher than general inflation, the NHS is facing a funding gap estimated at up to £30bn by 2020.”‘ From The Guardian: ‘Our rose-tinted view of the NHS has to change.’ More at the Independent, Mirror, and Telegraph.”

I read today that the notion of no longer providing free care for ‘foreign visitors’ was mentioned, instead making them pay for their own care. Also ending most care for ‘migrants’ on the NHS in new bill.

Doubtless the guys who proposed this must be… you know… raaaaacist.

Oh.. and Roger Daltry says the NHS is making people unhealthy.

Who knew?
