Finally. NYC mayoral candidates to add Muslim holidays to school calendar

posted at 9:31 am on October 20, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

We haven’t heard too much from the New York City mayoral race lately, and for obvious reasons. Let’s face it… once Weiner was out of the race it sort of lost most of its media appeal. But the battle goes on, and while the remaining two major party candidates are far less… let’s say “colorful”… than Carlos Danger, they’re still doing their best to keep alive the long tradition of turning Big Apple politics into a parody from some alternate reality.

At this rate, city kids will be in school until the end of July.

Now that leading mayoral candidates Bill de Blasio and Joe Lhota have both vowed to add two Muslim holidays to the public school calendar, advocates for other religious and ethnic groups are clamoring for their days to be recognized too.

So it probably wasn’t much of a surprise that Democrat candidate (and most likely next mayor) de Blasio wants to make this move. But just to remind us that politics in New York City is unlike anything else you’re used to on the national level, Joe Lhota – the Republican – immediately jumped on the bandwagon as well. Apparently there must be enough of a Muslim vote out there, or at least those sympathetic to same, to drive this sort of stump speech call. But Big Apple politics can never be satisfied with a single move like this. If adding a couple of Muslim holidays is a good idea, dumping a bunch more into the mix must be a great idea.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver jumped into the brewing holy war Friday, saying the city should consider giving kids the day off for the Chinese New Year.

“I think the city has to recognize (Chinese New Year),” said Silver, a Democrat whose district includes Chinatown in lower Manhattan. “We don’t want to take away from the learning days, but we have to adjust the calendar appropriately to include all of the major populations that we have.”

Shelly Silver, as any of you familiar with state politics here know, is the long time Democrat Party machine boss in Albany who has essentially run New York State for ages now. So if we start adding new days off to the school calendar, he’ll probably get his way. So… anybody else?

Also jumping into the vacation fray is City Councilman Daniel Dromm, a Queens Democrat who represents ethnically diverse Jackson Heights.

Dromm introduced a resolution in July to close school on the holy day of Diwali, a festival of lights celebrated by Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains.

A spokesman for Lhota said he’d consider adding other holidays. De Blasio has said he supports adding the Chinese New Year, but his campaign wouldn’t comment on Diwali.

I can’t help but notice that none of them are talking about adding any more of the major Jewish holidays to the list of school closures. And what about Kwanza? The children are still being forced to go to school on Kwanza!

We’ve had discussions about extending the school year before, mostly in the hopes of keeping up with other countries who are leaving us behind in scholastic achievement, but this wasn’t what anyone had in mind. State law still mandates that the kids have to attend school for 183 days per year, and if all these items get put in place, summer vacation won’t start until the 4th of July. But hey… this is New York. We’re only functional on a parody based command and control system.

What the he!!. Put everyone’s holidays on the calendar, then no one will have to work at all!

Just let the kids have everyday off for a holiday except for Thanksgiving,Christmas and Easter. After all these days just celebrate holidays for those evil mean Christens.

And what about Kwanza? The children are still being forced to go to school on Kwanza!

Kids generally don’t go to school on Kwanzaa since it takes up that depressing week between Christmas and New Year’s Day. But then again more people dress up for Kwanzaa in promotional material than actually celebrate it.

Bill de Blasio is going to make the city hark back to the “good ol’ days” of Mike Bloomberg.

A business law professor I had in college came up with a good idea related to this. The week before a religion-specific holiday, he’d write a related word on the chalk board, and anyone who wrote down the correct meaning of it had the next week excused from class. Everyone else had to attend. He was a major stickler for attendance, and took roll at the beginning and end of every class (it was one of those once a week long-arse large classes with a little break in the middle).

I’ve been waiting for the first public school district in the country to announce “no Christmas break,” just Christmas day off. It’s coming. And what’ll they do when 80% of students don’t show up for a week? And when 80% of teachers get a “doctor’s note” for a week of absences?

I have said it many times; but these days, I am so utterly grateful to The Big Scot for working so hard to let me homeschool our children. It has been a wonderful 16 year odyssey. Oftentimes, because my education had so many holes in it–think “social studies” and “language arts”– I was learning right along with them. I hated SS, when it came time to teach world geography, I was dreading it. I think I had more fun than the children, and they had a ball with it. They can name every nation/country, with capitals, and place its location. We had more fun learning about all of them, the food, the culture, fun facts, etc. The irony is that we live in Cook County, they have stopped teaching “social studies”, it takes too much time and paper (!). Far be it from the CPS to educate our children.

There, Cindy, aincha glad you commented on homeschooling? : )))))

You don’t get it – the reason Muslim holidays are now an issue is because there are so many Muslims in New York. And so, yes, when Christians are a minority, then maybe there won’t be a day off on Christian holidays, because there won’t be enough people to actually care. As long as a majority do care, then there’s no problem. You think the kids really care that they get more time off?

Yeah, if only he had more members of the Symbionese Liberation Army in his neighborhood.

It all started with Donald “Cinque Mtume” DeFreeze, who was serving a term of five to life for robbery and a police shootout when he was transferred to Soledad prison on Dec. 11, 1972. He escaped soon after and lit out for the Bay Area, where he eventually connected up with Patricia “Mizmoon” Soltysik, a radical activist not then under police scrutiny. Together, they fleshed out and codified what eventually became the Symbionese Liberation Army. Soon, they moved to East Oakland, where they gathered up the rest of their “army”–Nancy Ling Perry, Thero Wheeler (himself an escapee from Vacaville prison), Russell Little, Willie Wolfe, and Bill and Emily Harris. This group quickly established a name for itself in the leftist community by burglarizing the homes of other leftist groups, taking guns and other sundries.

DeFreeze explained “Symbionese” in the manifesto Symbionese Liberation Army Declaration of Revolutionary War & the Symbionese Program: “The name ‘symbionese’ is taken from the word symbiosis and we define its meaning as a body of dissimilar bodies and organisms living in deep and loving harmony and partnership in the best interest of all within the body.” Murder, kidnapping, bank robbery and ripping off your neighbors notwithstanding, of course.

In The Cobra Symbol/The Seven Aims of the SLA, DeFreeze explains the significance of the SLA’s seven-headed cobra symbol: “The emblem of the Symbionese Liberation Army is 170,000 years old, and is one of the first symbols used by people to signify God and life.” Later on in the manuscript he says, “The seven memberships of our federation are men and women who are black, brown, yellow, red, white, young and old.” I guess that being both yellow and old gets you a double membership.

Finally, in The Seven Principles of the SLA, DeFreeze gives the meaning of each head in Swahili, Spanish, and English. You’ll recognize these as being the seven principles of Kwanzaa, the African-American year-end celebration, first celebrated in 1966:

Umoja-La Unidad-Unity – To strive for and maintain unity in our household, our nation and in the Symbionese federation.

Kujichagulia-La Libre Determinacion-Self Determination – To define ourselves, name ourselves, speak for ourselves and govern ourselves.

Ujima-Trabajo Colectivo y Responsibilidad-Collective Work and Responsibility – To build and maintain our nation and federation together by making our brothers’ and sisters’ and the Federation’s problems our problems and solving them together.

Ujamaa-Produccion Cooperativa-Cooperative Production – To build and maintain our own economy from our skills, and labor and resources and to insure ourselves and other nations that we all profit equally from our labor.

Nia-Proposito-Purpose – To make as our collective vocation the development and liberation of our nation, and all oppressed people, in order to restore our people and all oppressed people to their traditional greatness and humanity.

Kuumba-Creativo-Creativity – To do all we can , as best as we can, in order to free our nation and defend the federation and constantly make it and the earth that we all share more beautiful and beneficial.

Imani-Fe-Faith – To believe in our unity, our leaders, our teachers, our people, and in the righteousness and victory of our struggle and the struggle of all oppressed and exploited people.

What a lovely bunch of coconuts.

GarandFan on October 20, 2013 at 10:32 AM

I’m okay with this if it helps move towards what I’d really like to see in education: school choice combined with shortening the summer holiday for kids. Nearly 3 months off is too much and they end up spending the first couple of weeks of the next school year in review on the previous. Year round school, perhaps 9 weeks on and 3 weeks off like was proposed here at one time, is what I’d like to see.

JohnAGJ on October 20, 2013 at 10:37 AM

It’s worse than that. As the muzzie calendar is primitive and totally lunar, muzzie holidays will travel throughout the year without any connection to the solar year, at all.

Nice to see that it only took New York 12 years after the attack of 9/11 to totally capitulate and surrender to the violent, belligerent, aggressive, anti-Western primitives of islam. Yay!!

March Hare on October 20, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Those holidays do have a relationship to the solar year. The Jewish calendar is lunar but with adjustments to solarize it – the Jewish calendar has a “leap month” that is added to keep it in sync with the seasons. They move a little back and forth but fall under the same season, as they are seasonal holidays, to begin with.

In islam, the calendar is totally lunar. In fact, in islam it’s a death penalty offense to add any intercalary in order to solarize it, at all. islam, after all, is the formalization of desert arab culture and there are no seasons in the desert, really. The islamic year is 11 days longer than the solar year and never adjusts. All of its dates and just move through the solar year without any respect for seasons, at all. Of course, most primitive calendars were lunar but when Man advanced to agrarian lifestyle and needs they had to solarize their calendars. islam, as usual, went in the exact opposite direction … but, then, primitivization is one of the main thrusts of islam.

First, just a minor pet peeve of mine… It’s called Independence Day. I hate calling it “Fourth of July.”

But, having said that, I don’t think you have to worry about Independence Day. Time to stop celebrating that. And let’s talk about eliminating President’s Day (actually officially George Washington’s Birthday), Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day, and anything else that might smack of celebrating the obviously racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, imperialistic origins of this nation. That will make plenty of room for the kiddies to celebrate Kwanzaa and Chinese New Year.

I can’t help but notice that none of them are talking about adding any more of the major Jewish holidays to the list of school closures.

The NYC public schools have had Rosh Hashanah as a holiday for decades. This year the public schools were closed for RH on Thursday and Friday, September 5 and 6. But they probably drew the line there because there are so many other Jewish holidays, and also because Chanukah is too close to the “standard” December holiday recess.

annoyinglittletwerp on October 20, 2013 at 2:41 PM

Try reading my comment, again. The Jewish year is solar adjusted. That’s what Adar Two is all about.

Judaism, itself, is very much about the move from nomad to agrarian so the solar seasons are of utmost importance. The little movements you are talking about in the Jewish holidays (and the Jewish calendar, in general) I addressed. They oscillate back and forth a bit but stay in season. In islam, there ARE NO SEASONS and there ARE NO DAYS THAT RESPECT the solar seasons. This is one of the reasons that the idiot Westerners talking about the “arab spring” was such a total joke. There is no spring in islam (and almost all arabs are muslims).

That’s why Ramadan in about 2015 is going to be so much fun for those muslims who’ve moved to places like Sweden and Scotland. Ramadan has been getting closer and closer to the summer solstice, and by 2015, it’s going to run from mid-June to mid-July.

During ramadan, muslims aren’t allowed to eat until after sundown. But in the far north, there are only a few hours of darkness in June/July.

I’m not going to say for sure whether or not the following was God’s judgment; I’m just sharing an observation:

Some weeks ago, a large Muslim terror group captured a city on the island I live on (Mindanao, Philippines).
After substantial loss of life & damage of property, the city was restored to freedom.
Soon afterward, Philippine President Aquino sought to appease the evildoers by declaring 10/15 to be a holiday honoring the ancient patriarch Ishmael’s willingness to be sacrificed on Abraham’s altar.
Most of us know that the Bible says it was Isaac, not Ishmael.
Aquino professes to be Catholic. Rome agrees that it was Isaac.*
Well, on 10/15, an earthquake struck the Philippines, killing nearly 200 & destroying much property…particularly many historic Roman Catholic buildings.
