Video: The man DC blames for the shutdown is …

posted at 4:01 pm on October 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Earlier, Erika noted Barack Obama’s “the buck doesn’t stop here” on polarization in Washington, but Media Research Center’s Dan Joseph took to the streets of Washington DC to find out who people blame specifically for the government shutdown. Dan offers passersby two choices — Barack Obama or George W. Bush.  Guess who gets the most blame?

Well, if it was Obama, then this would hardly be newsworthy, right?

Our colleague Dan Doherty wonders when Obama’s fan club will ever hold him accountable:

The “Blame Bush!” rallying cry routinely employed by leftists during the 2012 election was a useful tool used to discredit Republicans and insulate the president from criticism. It worked. But President Obama is in his second term. He’s held elective office for nearly half a decade. He’s the commander-in-chief of the United States of America, and any blame for stalled budget talks, government shutdowns or whatever should rest squarely on his shoulders. Theoretically, that is.

Granted, I realize some Americans will blame Bush for every problem we face — no matter what. He’s Democrats’ favorite fall guy, after all. But at a certain point one has to seriously wonder if these Obama flaks are shameless partisans who actually believe what they say or just hopelessly misinformed. I suspect it’s a combination of the two.

In part, though, this is an artifact of a somewhat false choice, albeit one intended to expose exactly what Dan describes.  If MRCTV had hit the streets to ask passersby whether Democrats or Republicans were more at fault, the split might be the same or even more one-sided, and more difficult to argue against.

Still, it’s a fun peek into the psyche of those who argue on one hand that Bush was an airhead and on the other that he was so successful in restructuring American society and economics that Barack Obama is still not competent for the results of his policies now.  Enjoy it for what it is.

George Bush, most powerful president since Abe Lincoln 5 years after he left office, is still able to thwart President Obama’s plans and dreams of Utopia.
President Obama is focused like a laser on these problems, but is just unable to overcome the mighty power that is the Bush legacy.
Like the like boy with his fingers in a dike, President Obama is doing all he can, but in the end, he may just not have enough fingers or tax money to spend to solve the problem.
It’s not a matter of President Obama’s competence, but really the massive, awesome power that is the Bush legacy is enough to crush any normal man. Like the Iditarod of presidencies, President Obama struggles through the harsh wilderness left behind by the Bush legacy, trying valiantly to save the helpless villagers from themselves and a cruel world.

But seriously, did you catch handbag (not a manbag) guy’s second comment? It’s GWBs fault because Obama just got in office…. After nearly five years. It’s okay if you missed it. The bedazzled logo on the hoodie might have distracted you from the stupid.

BTW, I was born and raised in DC. This is not your typical Washingtonian. DC is a company town and the company is the federal government. You are more likely to find somebody who would tell you everything that is wrong with the GWB v. Obama question in graduate-level terms. The people that made the final cut are idiots who would support Obama no matter what. The question could have been Hitler v. Obama. That all but one is of the same race speaks for itself.

I’m not surprised. They have been successfully conditioned to think the way they do. Most are unaccustomed to critical thought, and will simple absorb and mouth meaningless platitudes when addressed. Doubleplus this! And this, of course:

And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed -if all records told the same tale — then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past,’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.’ And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. ‘Reality control’, they called it: in Newspeak, ‘doublethink’.

BobMbx on October 16, 2013 at 5:10 PM

I put it back somewhat further than that to FDR. While LBJ’s policies vastly expanded and accelerated the decline I think FDR really got the ball rolling. LBJ started the re-population of the plantation and put the chains back on the residents. Those chains while not physical are nevertheless real, binding and almost impossible to throw off. Once you are dependent on the government for your very existence you can almost never get free again. Most don’t even try. LBJ’s legacy is to keep them ignorant, on the plantation and voting Democrat forever. They are and ever will be slaves from the cradle to the grave.

Under the Bush Administration, residential driveways were containinated by a vast right wing conspiracy with the intent of causing cancer in low income families. By applying this gallon of used oil on your driveway, it’ll lock in all contaminants and all you have to pay now is 500 dollars and the Obama Administration will reimburse your family three times that amount by simply calling filling out this form and sending it to the White House.”

I simply cannot believe these people voted and had a say in my future and the future of my little smoothsailers.
