Disgrace: Memorial to heroes who saved Washington from 9/11 attack closed by National Park Service

posted at 12:41 pm on October 15, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Yet another open-air memorial has been closed by the National Park Service since the shutdown began, and this one is especially ironic — and infuriating.  The heroes of Flight 93 gave their lives to stop al-Qaeda terrorists who had seized their airplane from using it in an attack on Washington DC — either the Capitol Building or the White House itself.  The open-air, no-barriers-to-access memorial in Shanksville that marks the spot of their sacrifice got hijacked as a political tool by the NPS and the Obama administration:

Angry visitors have taken out their frustration on the closure sign at the Flight 93 Memorial.

“It’s a memorial for people who were lost in the tragedy. It has nothing to do with the government,” said Jessica Shaffer, who made the trip from Ohio.

“I don’t think it’s right. I don’t think we should be suffering for what our government has done,” said Barry Haslup.

Haslup tried to walk around the closed gate and orange cones, but rangers kindly asked him to turn around.

CNS News went out to the site this weekend, and confirmed that the rangers still have the memorial closed — even though it normally has no barriers to access at any time:

Americans who want to honor and reflect upon the memory of the crew and passengers who perished aboard United Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001 will find that the federal government has blocked the road four miles down from the open-air memorial near Shanksville, Pa.

CNSNews.com photographed the spot of the road closure this past weekend. The steel barrier blocking vehicles from passing says: “Because of the federal government shutdown, this National Park Service facility is closed.”

The land around the memorial is supposed to be controlled by the state game and wildlife commission, not the National Park Service, The road, however, is US Route 219, which does fall under the purview of the federal government, at least to some extent. However, the Obama administration isn’t closing all US routes and interstate freeways during this shutdown, and those roads are patrolled not by NPS but by state and local law enforcement. This is clearly a punitive measure imposed by NPS as part of the Obama administration’s Washington Monument strategy, and it’s easily the most offensive yet in light of the sacrifice of those honored at the memorial. Talk about ingratitude.

Why, if national monuments and memorials are barakaded, shouldn’t we be shutting down federally provided public housing?

I think we should demand the White House shut down. Kick the lazy stupid coward and his entire worthless family out in the streets. Joe Biden too. Close down Camp David. Make life as miserable as possible as he tries to run the free world from his room at the Holiday Inn Express.

The NPS Stasi had better be looking for a good PR firm. People won’t soon forget the crap they pulled on behalf of Obama. The “Smokey Bear” hat now ranks right up there with Nazi armbands among the ranks of offensive clothing.

Local talk radio has been featuring Sunday’s rally on the National Mall and how the media has deliberately misreported an OWS plant that showed up with a Confederate flag. The stories of people accompanying WWII Vets and what their memorial means to them or people going to the memorial simply because “Dad” never had the chance are almost heartbreaking. The same holds true with those seeking access to the Vietnam and Korea memorials.

And throughout it all, bullies in silly hats have been mean, vindictive, and partisan. May they all burn in hell for their actions.

Happy Nomad on October 15, 2013 at 12:55 PM

this is merely operant conditioning.
The federal government is in the throes of teaching its proletariat just How Much Good it does for us each and every day. Don’t be surprised when they one day seal off your windpipe and make you beg for the air that they so graciously and caringly provide you with each and every day.

Malevolence.

I well up in tears almost every time I read or hear about flight 93. The sacrifice of those passengers is beyond the comprehension of most people inside Washington. This story proves that Obama’s actions are truly spiteful and he has no admiration for the people of this country. These orders come from his own hatred of America’s greatness and the individuals who still revere that greatness. Why on God’s green earth would anyone deny others the the chance to honor the passengers heroics and say thank you for their sacrifice.

jaywemm on October 15, 2013 at 1:06 PM

I think it’s time for a protest march by vets and ordinary citizens to the Flight 93 memorial, as was done at the WWII memorial.

Last week, I had family visiting from the East Coast… we decided to take the drive one day to visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library – only to learn on arrival that the Library and Museum was closed because of the federal government shutdown.

Unfortunately, there were about 8-10 school buses there of kids on a class trip who were unable to get into the Library / Museum because of the WH’s decision to make the shutdown as painful as possible. At least they could still get on the grounds and into the Air Force One pavilion.

Even with the decision of the WH and their apparatchik’s to not pay death benefits to the families of our Armed Forces, the majority of the lamestream media and GOP establishment have been far too silent – just as they’ve been with the fascist closures of parks and memorials in order to inflict ‘pain’ for partisan political purposes.

I’m trying to decide which is more outrageous – the contemptuous actions of the President / WH to maximize pain for partisan political goals or the intellectual, moral, and ethical bankruptcy of those to not rage about the contemptuous and petty actions of the progressive-fascists.

UPDATED: Mon Oct 14, 2013 6:35 PM EST – The political agenda put forth by a local organizer in Washington DC was not in alignment with our message. We feel disheartened that some would seek to hijack the narrative for political gain. The core principle is about all Americans honoring Veterans in a peaceful and apolitical manner. Mr. Cruz, Ms. Palin and some attendees, including political parties may have not been aware of the goals of the marches which took place in over 60+ rallies across the nation. And even your own copied “outrageously outrageous” story of Cruz and Palin points out clearly that they were invited by the local group. The local group is getting most of the criticism. The larger group didn’t want to make this political.

But you’re dodge wont work. The monuments being barrycaded is an act of politicization of the government that Obama is responsible for.

If you want to claim that Cruz and Palin have gone to far and politicized the memorial being blocked off then you must be really pissed off at Obama for his politically driven spite in actually closing down open air monuments right? You not a completely blind partisan hack are you? Surely the greater political outrage is the monuments being closed in the first place right?

I thought that the Million Vet March was just a bunch of racists, who wanted to turn the clocks back to 1855.

That was your talking point earlier.

Resist We Much on October 15, 2013 at 1:35 PM

Early on, It’s point was that the organizers were condemning Palin and Cruz because they didn’t want those tea baggers at the rally. This is such a skewed version of the truth it is clear that it came without ever even seeing the actual statement instead of relying on the Daily Kos talking points.

rules for radicals, Saul Alinsky from wikipedia

1 “Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have.”
2 “Never go outside the expertise of your people.”
3 “Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy.”
4 “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
5 “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.”
6 “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.”
7 “A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag.”
8 “Keep the pressure on. Never let up.”
9 “The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself.”
10 “The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition.”
11 “If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive.”
12 “The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative.”
13 “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.

Communicate via News Reports:

His goal was to unite a group through conflict with an external antagonist. Once the enemy was established, the community would come together in opposition of it. This management of conflict heightened awareness within the community as to the similarities its members shared as well as what differentiated them from those outside of their organization.

external antagonist: tea party

Alinsky encouraged over-the-top public demonstrations throughout Rules for Radicals that could not be ignored, and these tactics enabled his organization to progress their goals faster than through normal bureaucratic processes

Cannot ignore WWII vets, lauded by tea party
Cannot ignore illegal aliens, Lauded by Obama

Lastly, the main theme throughout Rules for Radicals and Alinsky’s work was empowerment of the poor.[7] Alinsky used symbol construction and nonviolent conflict to create a structured organization with a clearly defined goal that could take direct action against a common enemy. At this point, Alinsky would withdraw from the organization to allow their progress to be powered by the community itself, not by Alinsky.[

Supporters of the vets are attempting to understand Obama as if he had their values. His goal was to identify the enemy (white middle class) and recruit followers (illegals and entitlement crowd). His goal was not to get along with his enemy

Minority hostility is blooming against the enemy: any old white person who declares patriotism

Alinsky sought to neuter oppostion by painting targets on them, outragous insult, breaking the rules of fair fight, while signalling it is open season on the enemy

Obama is trying to break the backbone of the nation

alinsky is old news. Hitler, Stalin played the game. To beat the rat, you have to fight like a rat. That confuses good men
for a while

The brainwashing continues.

Last week, Principal Pat Jones, worried that by the fact that some of his students didn’t know the federal government had been shut down, announced that his school, Alliance High School in Nebraska, would refrain from reciting the pledge as they did each morning, to remind them of the problems in Washington.

Pat Jones, agent of Obama, wanting to inflict pain in his own little feifdom. Offering up his serfs for ritual suffering in the name of his rat-eared idol.

Maybe they only had to erect barricades against people who imagine they have some right to trespass in violation of the law. I know, I know. They’re Gods among men or something like that. These are the people who raised the boomers…how “Great” of a generation can they be?

libfreeordie on October 2, 2013 at 9:09 AM

Of course, it was perfectly fine with this person trespassed.

You’re under the sad delusion that the majority of Americans even care whether some war veterans couldn’t travel to a memorial. That nostalgic, romantic crap is just not part of the cultural DNA of this country anymore. What people care about are 800,000 American workers not getting pay checks. What people care about is a lack of food inspection. What people care about are the federal dollars that flow into their communities in a variety of ways. And even if they cared about WWII vets why on *earth* would they blame the Obama administration when everyone knows that its the GOP who has held the budget hostage in an attempt to end Obamacare. Literally everyone knows it. But why should we be surprised that you don’t/can’t get it. You predicted the polls were lying and Romney would win. Lets face it. You don’t know this country anymore. Its not yours anymore. Good lord, another 15 years and the last vestiges of demographic control from the “greatest generation” and the more conservative boomers will have finally dissipated into irrelevance. I, for one, can not wait.

I’m not secret about being ‘happy or joyous’. Now it is true that 99% of humans will engage in any sexual deviancy if not checked by morality, society or religion.

Actually its veterans who are, in your words, “whining about Cruz and Palin.” Why do you hate our vets?

libfreeordie on October 15, 2013 at 1:22 PM

I know several vets, including this one, and could find you plenty more, who are more than happy Cruz and Palin were there. I would have been happy to see Dems there marching against the politicization of the Memorials by this administration.

Why weren’t they there?

Do Dem pols hate our vets?

Seems by your standards they do.

Happy Nomad on October 15, 2013 at 12:49 PM,

I know where you’re coming from, however, Camp David (officially, Naval Support Facility, Thurmont, MD) is an active military installation, so it is funded under the “Pay our Military Act”. It is, however, located in Catoctin Mountain Park, which is administered by the NPS. So Camp David is “open”, but Catoctin Mt Park is probably closed. Since the POTUS usually flies to Camp David, having the roads closed won’t stop him from going to the “Hill”. Will be a mild nuisance for the Marines and Navy personnel stationed there.

Tom_Shipley on October 15, 2013 at 2:02 PM

Is this a new name for verbalunatic?

Uhh, no it doesn’t.
A government shutdown means the government cannot spend the money to do what they normally do.
What they are doin now is spending money they don’t legally have to put guards and barrycades in places where normally those things don’t exist.
How do you justify the cost of putting up guards and barrycades where normally i.e. when the governement is operating, there are NO guards or barrycades, or government personnel of any kind?
Please explain.

dentarthurdent on October 15, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Also, Ed, why are you posting this now? Why is this suddenly a story?

As you note, this memorial has been closed since the shutdown began.

This is the height of cynical, partisan blogging. Using the closing of the 9/11 memorial to score unjustified political points against the president.

Despite your rather muddy claim that the park is “supposed to be controlled by the state game and wildlife commission, not the National Park Service,” the park is controlled by the National Park Service.

Remember, and this is important, Republicans are the ones who forced the shutdown. The result of that shutdown is that this memorial would close. This was known long before the shutdown began.

If it’s a disgrace that this memorial was shutdown, look at your own party. They forced the shutdown because they don’t like a law that was passed by both houses of congress, signed by the president and upheld by the supreme court. They feel that, despite all this and the public overwhelmingly disagreeing with the strategy, that it’s OK to shutdown the government and push the country to fiscal catastrophe because they didn’t like a law that was, again, passed by both houses of congress, signed by the president and upheld by a right-leaning supreme court.

Now you have the gall to pin the park closing on Obama without any evidence? That’s the disgrace. Truly reprehensible.

Resist We Much on October 15, 2013 at 2:46 PM

I remember visiting this memorial in 2005 before “the govt took it over”{ I had just retired from the Airlines and really wanted to see and be there. It truly was a “peoples’ monument. Make shift memorials and prayers, volunteers running everything, etc. This government is not of this country,,,,there has been a soft coup and the country has been kidnapped/stolen.

You must be a new troll from OFA.
Who does the NPS work for?
Who ordered them to go put up barrycades and assign guards where there normally are NONE?
And what’s the excuse for doing that? I.E. – spending MORE money than normal just to keep people out.
