Today, on the Ed Morrissey Show (3 pm ET), we’ll take a look at the past week with Duane “Generalissimo” Patterson of the Hugh Hewitt Show. Duane and I will go over the latest in the shutdown follies, plus much more. All of this, and stay tuned for a preview of tonight’s Hugh Hewitt Show.

The Ed Morrissey Show and its dynamic chatroom can be seen on the permanent TEMS page. Be sure to join us, and don’t forget to keep up with the debate on my Facebook page, too!

The National Park Service is failing a giant national-scale Milgram obedience to authority experiment.

Speaking of the “Shutdown Follies,” now playing to a cracked House in Washington, backed up by the “Cave-in Chorus,” I’m going to ask a question like a fifth grader since that’s just a little smarter than the combined Congress (with some exceptions soon to be eaten by their own party).

Since the House of Representatives holds the “purse strings” of the nation, why can the House not say “We will not fund the Government at a level above $ trillion, deal with it.”

The President can then say, “I won’t take your $ trillion, I’d rather have veterans, children and fluffy puppies live in the snow.”

Euphemisms (shutdown, slimdown, sequester, continuing resolution, Jenny Craig government) get in the way of understanding the balance of powers. And power means just that. The purse is a powerful weapon and is meant to be. Waving it in the air doesn’t do much if you don’t have the guts to do your job.

Will we fund the government? Yes. But we will not sink the government to save it.

I, for one, could get my poor, simple head around that one.
