Dr. Carson: I got my first IRS audit after publicly criticizing Obama

posted at 1:21 pm on October 7, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

We missed this on Friday, but Instapundit caught it today — part of his laser focus on the IRS scandals. Dr. Ben Carson, who became a conservative-grassroots favorite after openly criticizing Barack Obama in his presence during a prayer breakfast in February, believes his recent IRS audit to be a case of lèse-majesté rather than any serious concern over his tax status. And what should worry the White House even more than Carson is that CBS News is taking the concern seriously:

Dr. Ben Carson, known for medical miracles, is now known for making waves. It started with an in-your-face criticism of the president’s policies at a national prayer breakfast this year.

“People are not used to hearing things that make sense come out of Washington. And so somebody actually gets up and says something that makes sense and people start hyperventilating,” Carson said in February.

Whether it’s because he said it with the president sitting right there, the media fallout or coincidence, he was audited. The suggestion that the IRS uses its power to influence politics seems farfetched, but then we see IRS employees in a Star Trek spoof–part of a $4 million employee training conference.

“It was a difficult money trail to follow, but in the end we got it,” the spoof said.

And then came the admission that group requests for tax exempt status were red flagged and sidelined for their politics.

Why did CBS take it seriously? Perhaps because the IRS is building a track record of political vendettas. First came the news that the IRS used more scrutiny for Tea Party and other conservative groups when applying for tax-exempt status. Last month, USA Today reported that the IRS specifically targeted groups that used “anti-Obama rhetoric” in their literature.

Under those circumstances, Dr. Carson’s suspicions look a lot less like paranoia and a lot more like recognition of a pattern.

Right out of the Clinton playbook. Clearly illegal, but no one is ever punished. Instead they are rewarded and lauded by the mainstream media for putting party loyalty above the law.

Grew up where Dr. Carson worked his miracles on children. His hospital was one of my first accounts years ago. This is one guy, they should have left alone. He is a quiet, more reserved version of Col. West. Not small potatoes in any circles. In the medical field – he is a real hero. I’d vote for him in a nano-second.

Time for my favorite quote under this regime:

The suggestion that the IRS uses its power to influence politics seems farfetched,

In what world is it farfetched? It’s totally consistent with the record of the IRS under this Thugocracy. Did I miss a sarcasm tag?

Basilsbest on October 7, 2013 at 1:33 PM

If you listen to the end of the clip, the broadcaster says, “Dr. Carson has also talked about it on the Fox News Channel.” WTF? Is that supposed to be some dog whistle that Carson is a crackpot who wears a tinfoil cap and watches Fox News?

Compelled to report, but inclined to dismiss.

Is it my imagination or have the trolls gone to ground now that the administration’s roll out of Obamacare has turned into a debacle and the shut down has turned from little kids unable to watch Pandacam to armed NPS Stasi kicking 80-year-olds out of their homes and away from their memorial in DC?

And, BTW, I realize that the NPS personnel on site are being forced to harrass Americans but they should be ashamed of their actions nonetheless. It will be a long time before their image is something other than one of jackbooted thugs in stupid looking hats.

Yep. Out with the image of smiling helpful park rangers. In with the image of palace guards sent out to attack and harrass citizens. This is more than bad stewardship, they have IMO, broken the trust the American public had in them by their vindictive pettiness.

Happy Nomad on October 7, 2013 at 2:09 PM

That’s not “CBS”; it’s WJZ-TV, the Baltimore station that happens to be a CBS affiliate. Get back to us when the CBS Evening News or 60 Minutes takes it up.

I like this guy a lot but he will be destroyed in the media.

SC.Charlie on October 7, 2013 at 2:36 PM

I used to work with a guy who had a very interesting approach. He always left some deductions off his tax return, and although he paid slightly more taxes most years, he his plan was that if he ever got audited, the IRS would end up paying him for the hassle – and likely would never audit him again.

dentarthurdent on October 7, 2013 at 1:27 PM

I concur – I have been seeing stories on Drudge, Breitbart and Twitchy much earlier then on HotAir. And by earlier I mean a day or more prior. Where I used to come directly to HotAir I now go to the other sites first.

I get the feeling sometimes that the more pro-moderate stories hit here earlier than the pro-conservative, but I’d have to admit that may be because the sites I hit first are doing more conservative stories or those are the stories that my eyes go to first.

I will try to send these stories to the tips email more often realizing there is a lot of information you guys at HotAir have to sort through.

unaffiliated on October 7, 2013 at 2:44 PM

CBS wouldn’t touch this story with a 10 foot pole, they got their marching orders from the regime to not report any ‘phony’ scandals…

Obama is shutting honorable war veterans out of memorials which sit on national park land but he is allowing illegal immigrants to stage events on national park land.

That is selective use of government power to make life worse for some Americans while giving special privilege to those you favor. Obama should be impeached for it.

The IRS has always been a criminal organization…why does it take these recent events for many to realize that?

The ignorance of our country is overwhelming. Too many have been in awe of and afraid of the federal government thus lending it ongoing legitimacy, and that’s not just a Leftist thing.
