Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on October 6, 2013 by Allahpundit

Your reward for suffering through a week’s worth of shutdown talking points from both sides is a Sunday morning packed with shutdown talking points from both sides. Ted Cruz will be on CNN, Rand Paul will be on NBC, and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will be everywhere — all five shows, to hammer the Democrats’ message that hitting the debt ceiling would indeed bring about the Biblical End Times. The only one worth watching, though, is Boehner on ABC, since that’s the only one likely to generate real news. Is it true that he has no strategy? What’s his countermove to Pelosi’s discharge petition to end the shutdown? Is National Review right that the big Republican “ask” in debt-ceiling negotiations will be modest entitlement reform and something to do with the tax code, not ObamaCare? Only Boehner, and the Book of Revelation, know.

Speaking of which, Peter King will be on “Fox News Sunday” to assure viewers that Cruz just might be the antichrist. The full line-up is at Politico.

I’m with you. I’d like to see a real shutdown to see what actually happened. Not these two-day pseudoshutdowns that are nothing but media fodder.

Personally, I’ve never felt a thing when the fed shut down.

Wino on October 6, 2013 at 8:16 AM

Boehner will move the needle one way or another. We’ll find out if the reports of his death are greatly exaggerated or if he’s been in a drunken stupor the past week and sobered up to realize he shut the government down. If he attacks the “wacko bird, terrorist, anti-Christ” Cruz, then we’ll know where this is going. I admit I’m not feeling confident. He isn’t a shrewd man and he’s playing with sharks. All for naught.

someone please bring up all the LAWS that dear leader has skirted around because he didn’t like them….ANYONE???

cmsinaz on October 6, 2013 at 8:20 AM

The Republicans should be hammering two messages during the shutdown: the bloated, super-sized federal government and it’s overreach into our lives, and the politicizing of the NPS, which is all the WH. They can make the same argument two different ways. Cruz, Mike Lee, and Rand Paul are capable.

Republicans never control the messaging. Cruz did with his quasi-filibuster, and that’s what ticked off the Democrats and the SRM: they lost traction with the messaging war.

83%

“Based on estimates drawn from CBO and OMB data, 83 percent of government operations will continue. This figure assumes that the government pays amounts due on appropriations obligated before the shutdown ($512 billion), spends $225 billion on exempted military and civilian personnel, pays entitlement benefits for those found eligible before the shutdown (about $2 trillion), and pays interest costs when due ($237 billion). This is about 83 percent of projected 2014 spending of $3.6 trillion.”

The words “Boehner” and “strategy” belong in the same context roughly as much as “Biden” and “coherent” do. That is, not at all.

It’s less that Boehner is trying to decide whether or not to surrender than it is that he’s trying to figure out a way to do so and retain the speaker’s gavel. My guess is that he can’t get there from here, but stranger things have happened.

Like Nancy Pelosi, for instance.

Of course, he has the advantage over his predecessor of not being obviously out of his tiny little mind.

Note I said “obviously“.

Seems fair and reasonable. They shouldn’t be allowed to flout the budgetary process. If they won’t negotiate a budget to passage, then we’ll fund government on a line item basis. Simple as that.

No, King is a NY moderate. If every single one of those GOPers doesn’t highlight the preezy’s petty vindictiveness in trying to hurt Americans as badly as he can, along with the fact that this shutdown is BEAUTIFULLY illustrating how bloated the federal govt is, then they have no idea the gift that POS has handed them.

Moreover, his vile vindictiveness and efforts to punish Americans is a BEAUTIFUL illustration of why government health care is such a danger. They need to be SCREAMING that in the future, when an evil man like Obama is elected president again, he will hold Americans’ health care hostage to get his way — and it will be a lot more effective than holding memorials hostage.

So many arguments to be made, so many home runs, if only they would take them.

Rational Thought on October 6, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Wow. Just now on Twitter: “Boehner: We are not going to pass clean debt limit bill; ‘The votes are not in the House.’”

On FNS, George Will says we have 10x more revenue than we need to pay the interest on the debt. Though Obama and Lew keep talking “default, default, default”.

What would Obama do? Would he default? A few years ago, when asked about this situation, Obama sneered, as he often does, and asked rhetorically, do you think he’s going to pay China interest on the debt, or pay retirees their Social Security check?

No mention of the law, because it’s all about what Obama wants. Obama doesn’t care about the law. I don’t know what the law says, but as George Will says, Obama isn’t even pretending to prioritize who gets paid for what.

Before you dump them, we need to give the permitting and required inspecting power back to State and Local governments so that we don’t hold up private sector business for lack of government action. Permit shields also have real legal value for private business because laws are misused to sue into bankruptcy legitimate business or stop economic activities not foreseen when the legal avenues of recourse were set up. There is much inefficiency and misplaced priority in government operations that are great avenues for cost reduction but we must not punish private sector businesses by leaving them dependent on government actions determined to be “non-essential.

In practice, yes. But it long predates Our Idiot President and to me it is just one symptom of the rarely spoken reality of Washington — even under Republican presidents that filthy sh1thole of a town is populated by liberal Democrats. State Department is a cesspool of Euro-leftism. The Pentagon and Foggy Bottom are increasing staffed with idiot Democrats. EPA is, by its very nature, a function of idiot liberals.

The cure for this sickness would be, in my opinion, a massive slashing of Federal employment in D.C. itself — 25% or more in those three filthy departments — led by a conservative President who then mandates an ideological reign of terror conducted department by department, door to door, rooting out entrenched leftists in the government and replacing them with known believers in the new President’s agenda.

Hard to imagine, actually. Call it Reformist Porn.

I think the main people that are unnerved by this strategy are:

Tom C on October 6, 2013 at 1:43 PM

Republicans will in fact end the government shutdown, pass the budget, and fund ObamaCare if this one single simple demand is met:

REMOVE ALL EXEMPTIONS, EXCEPTIONS, AND WAIVERS TO OBAMACARE.

It’s that simple. The message is: If ObamaCare is so good for the people, then let everyone have it.

Right now. This instant.

The poor, the rich, the big unions, the big corporations, the politically connected, the lawyers, the lobbyists, and of course, Congress, too. Everyone means everyone.

“Everyone” must specifically include Senators, Congressmen, their staffs, Obama himself, Michelle, Sasha and Malia. It’s everyone in the rowboat, or no one.

Yeah … wow. I watched Chris Wallace gut him like a fat, liberal fish on the late broadcast; it was astonishing. Lew clung to DWS-like talking points like a drowning rat. I was embarrassed for him.

After a distinguished career at the nexus of politics and finance, he ends up spewing juvenile Obama-speak talking points about the budget and the economy that a college freshman would laugh at, all the while Wallace is just taunting him.
