Video: CBS hails Davis’ “marathon defense of abortion rights” in handicapping TX race

posted at 9:21 am on October 4, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Without a hint of irony or self-reflection, CBS News’ Norah O’Donnell introduces this segment on Texas state senator Wendy Davis’ long-known announcement of her run for the governor’s office by hailing her 13-hour filibuster as a “marathon defense of abortion rights” — a far cry from the treatment of Ted Cruz’ marathon attempt last week to warn America of the ObamaCare debacle that rolled out this week. Maybe we can call this clip Remember when filibusters and “hijacking” legislatures were cool?

In fact, the whole segment is basically a cheery look at Davis, with no attempt at all to analyze Davis’ weaknesses — one of which is the subject of the filibuster itself.  The bill Davis tried to block moved the bar on late-term abortions from 24 weeks to 20 weeks, and forced abortion clinics to meet the same regulatory health standards as all other ambulatory surgical offices in the state.  Those efforts had the support of 62% of all Texans, including 61% of women in the state.  (See page 416 of the crosstabs.)  Not only does Davis find herself in that minority, she refuses to contemplate limits on abortion at all, describing late-term abortions as her “sacred ground” in an echo of Nancy Pelosi.  Rather than report honestly on the actual issues of that bill, O’Donnell just characterizes her filibuster as marathon defense of abortion rights.

It’s not going to take $25 million to get these facts in front of Texas voters, but Greg Abbott already has that much in the bank, and he’s aggressively fundraising to build his coffers further.  He may need it if the mainstream media continues to toss hosannas at Davis for doing exactly what Cruz did in Washington — only without encouraging thugs to hijack a legislative session when it didn’t go her way.

Abortion Barbie won’t die, even when she loses by 20 points. The media will just blame Texas.

itsspideyman on October 4, 2013 at 12:46 PM

As I’m sure others have said, Wendy Davis was on absolutely no one’s radar before her little grandstand play and when she did finally get a ping, it was to alert us that she was a hack opportunist typical politician.

Seriously, other than the filibuster, what has this person done that makes her Governor material?

Well, she married a man, forced him to cash in his retirement to fund her education, left him with the two kids and went to fulfill her own selfish interests, so you can say she is perfect for the Democrat nomination.

Really, if Bob White lost by double digits, then what makes people believe this trailer park baby killer will do better.

Er, what!?! Thugs?

cptacek on October 4, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Oh, I read it wrong. She DID encourage thugs to hijack a legislative session when it didn’t go her way. I thought you meant Ted Cruz did that, by encouraging our elected representatives (who I thought you were calling thugs) to do what they are doing now.

I live in the Austin area where Wendy made a name for herself with that bizarre filibuster. When she made her announcement all the Austin TV stations except the CBS affiliate broke into their normal flow to show extended coverage of her announcement. The ABC affiliate (KVUE) was especially gushy but so was the NBC station, KXAN. I was not surprised but it still made me feel a bit ill. Now, Austin is the blue dot in the largely red sea in Texas, but still, I’m only 6 miles out of the city limits and pretty much swimming in red. The media would absolutely LOVE for Texas to turn blue and they trumpet stories about the changing demographics with Texas becoming more and more “Hispanic” and, they deduce, more and more blue as a result. What they fail to understand, though, is that many second and third generation Hispanics are far more conservative than their immigrant forebears. My wife is Hispanic and is no Obama fan. She has siblings who aren’t enamored of him or the Democrats as well. It’s a real mix. Demographics alone will not turn Texas blue and the conservatives (like Ted Cruz) have a chance to educate people to the virtues and better thinking of conservatism along the way.

Wendy Davis is very unlikely to win, but the liberal machine outside Texas, the media, and the Austin liberals will make it as big a circus as they can.

The RNC better take this woman seriously. Davis has serious $$ behind her and the OFA has been in TX for years….they target high population areas…and yes TX is becoming more liberal regardless of what you hear…the media is going to do their best too

I hope white men vote this time.

Well of course Satan is against abortion. Babies go to heaven, so each abortion is a point against him. Well, at least he’ll still get the “doctor”.

It wanted the storm to hit Texas. So they would have to deal with it “without emergency workers”.

oldroy on October 4, 2013 at 10:00 AM

Texans work just fine in an emergency.
