Obama cancels entire Asia trip over shutdown to, er … not negotiate

posted at 10:01 am on October 4, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

If this is a part of the Washington Monument strategy, it’s a rather strange tactic for it.  Barack Obama had planned to travel to four Asian countries this week, but earlier reduced the trip by half, supposedly because of the budget crisis in Washington.  Late last night, the White House cancelled the whole trip, sending Secretary of State John Kerry in Obama’s place instead:

President Obama has cancelled the rest of his trip to Asia next week, pulling out of summits in Indonesia and Brunei because of the ongoing government shutdown, the White House announced tonight.

“The president made this decision based on the difficulty in moving forward with foreign travel in the face of a shutdown, and his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a written statement. …

“The cancellation of this trip is another consequence of the House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government,” Carney said. “This completely avoidable shutdown is setting back our ability to create jobs through promotion of U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership and interests in the largest emerging region in the world.  The president looks forward to continuing his work with our allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific and to returning to the region at a later date.”

So …. this is basically a protest? Or is the White House arguing that the impasse has shut down the Presidency? Obama has been arguing for weeks that he won’t negotiate in the budget fight, so why should he need to cancel a foreign-policy trip at all?  This would appear to be the perfect time to get away, and perhaps even to raise his stature a little as the head of state, rather than the Barricade Barack who ordered open-air memorials to be blocked from visiting World War II veterans.

Andrew Malcolm wonders if the trip was necessary in the first place if sitting around and pouting is a higher priority:

The good news is President Obama finally canceled his entire extraneous trip to Asia, which was set to start tomorrow.

Not because he’s going to conscientiously immerse himself in solving the ongoing partial government shutdown like a real president. But, naturally, because of how it would look otherwise.

This keen student of politics apparently realized, or someone tipped him, that the optics of Obama convivially chatting up and negotiating with Asian leaders and a sultan in four faraway countries looked a little funny with his own government paralyzed.

Because the alleged American leader has so adamantly refused to negotiate with fellow Americans of another political party about this partial government shutdown.

So, Obama will be in Washington this weekend.

In related news, although his administration tried unsuccessfully to bar aged veterans from visiting Washington’s open-air World War II Memorial, somehow the D.C.-area military golf courses remain open and available this weekend should some commander-in-chief choose to play, as he did last Saturday.

Also, coincidentally, the Maryland presidential retreat of Camp David remains open and available, thanks to its 200+ full-time military personnel on perpetual standby to help the president shoot skeet or something.

IBD’s Michael Ramirez takes a shot at the Washington Monument strategy, too:

ramirez-monument

The decision to stick around and not negotiate is very odd, especially with yesterday’s CBS poll that shows compromise and negotiation as an across-the-board demand:

The overwhelming response from all demographics is compromise. Over the whole sample, 76% want Obama and the Democrats to compromise, and 78% want House Republicans to compromise. Sixty-one percent of Democrats want to see compromise from their own side, and 59% of Republicans feel the same way. That suggests that the “clean CR or else” and “I won’t negotiate” messaging from Reid and Obama will eventually backfire, especially as House Republicans send individual appropriations with little disagreement to the Senate only to get them rejected out of hand.

The White House could have gotten Obama out of the fray and onto the high-profile arena of global diplomacy.  That would have elevated his status while making Congress look petty in comparison.  Instead, Obama will sit in the White House and refuse to negotiate, which makes him look at least as petty as Congress, and undermine his credibility on leadership even further.  Canceling the trip looks a lot more like a temper tantrum than the act of a statesman, either domestically or internationally.

As I asked yesterdaycan’t anyone here play this game?

Shutdownmageddon is the perfect example of why liberalism doesn’t work.

These are the people who ask to be given vast amounts of power and wealth and control so they can use it to improve the human condition. And they often use this power and wealth and control for pure political ends.

Obama and his administration are not making the “shutdown” as painless as possible – presumably the position of someone who constantly argues for the essential goodness and moral authority of government – but is making it as painful as possible for political reasons.

Again Obama has done a great job of demonstrating why you can’t trust the government.

In other news this morning, the Miramar Air Show in San Diego has been canceled.

The flying portion of the show had been previously canceled due to Sequestration. Local folks and vendors put up funds, along with money from the base’s unappropriated funds (non-taxpayer money). The show normally MAKES the base about $1.6 million that is used for the welfare of those assigned to the base. Now the base will LOSE money because of the last minute cancellation.

The base commissary (grocery store) has also been closed, despite the fact that it to is run with unappropriated funds.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that our narcissistic president and his Office of Management and Budget is going out of its way to make like miserable for the average person.

Happy Nomad on October 4, 2013 at 10:37 AM

President Obama, can I ask you a few questions?

In 2006, you said:

‘Over the past 5 years, our federal debt has increased by $3.5 trillion to $8.6 trillion. That is ‘‘trillion’’ with a ‘‘T.’’ That is money that we have borrowed from the Social Security trust fund, borrowed from China and Japan, borrowed from American taxpayers. And over the next 5 years, between now and 2011, the President’s budget will increase the debt by almost another $3.5 trillion.

Numbers that large are sometimes hard to understand. Some people may wonder why they matter. Here is why: This year, the Federal Government will spend $220 billion on interest. That is more money to pay interest on our national debt than we’ll spend on Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. That is more money to pay interest on our debt this year than we will spend on education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans benefits combined.

Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar that is not going to investment in America’s priorities.

Our debt also matters internationally…Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally.

America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren.Americans deserve better. I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit.’

First, let me say, ‘Bravo!’ You were 100% correct back on 16 March 2006. I couldn’t have said it better myself!

During your Presidency, Mr Obama, we’ve added around $6.7 trillion in debt and now have an estimated $17.25 trillion national debt, according to your own White House Office of Management and Budget.

If spending on Medicaid, the State Children’s Health Insurance Programme, education, homeland security, transportation, and veterans’ benefits were adversely impacted when the debt was $8.6 trillion, how will they be impacted now that the debt is $17.25 trillion and heading much higher?

With $17.25 trillion in debt, $222 trillion in unfunded future liabilities (PV), the Federal Reserve EXPLICITLY planning to devalue the USD by 33% over the next two decades in order to shave 20% off of LAST YEAR’S DEBT LEVEL, how well will we be able to ‘take care of the poor’ in the future?

How will the purchasing power of the middle class be impacted by currency debaunchment?

What will happen to ‘The Children!!!’?

Whatever will you do about income inequality?

How will the Federal Reserve’s monetisation of our debt affect our national security – both domestically and internationally?

Whomever will you blame when the government is unable to OPEN, forget shut down?

When you became President, did you somehow become able to reverse the effects of debt and its service about which you so eloquently spoke in 2006?

When you made your comments on 16 March 2006, the outstanding public debt was $8,271,005,203,336.67. You argued that this figure was jeopardising us both domestically and internationally. I agreed. I still agree.

Today, the outstanding public debt is $16,747,468,940,509.72 according to the Treasury and estimated at $17.25 trillion according to the OMB.

Why would $8.3 trillion be a grave threat to the country, but $16.8 trillion (or $17.25 trillion) and going higher not be?

Please just explain this to me.

Ed, I respectfully disagree. To understand Obama’s motives, one needs to constantly evaluate the audience he is trying to persuade. He wants low information voters to see him as not skipping town while all of this childishness is going on. They don’t pay enough attention to know that Obama is not negotiating. But a high visibility trip overseas would hi light the fact that he’s doing squat to try to end the standoff inWashington.

This is the same reason he had the unnecessary meeting with congressional leaders the other night. Low information voters don’t pay attention beyond the first sentence or two. Obama knows this better than any politician in history. These voters didn’t pay attention to the fact that Obama didn’t negotiate or say anything new. But they see that he got involved. And it was important to him to have been seen as getting involved to the low information crowd, especially at that point, when he still had intentions of going overseas.

Au contraire! They’re Democrats!

In the Democratic Party, you can be a Southern Governor like Billy Jeff and never take one act in your 12 years to remove the confederate flag from your capitol and sign Act 985 making the birthdays of Martin Luther King, Jr, the preeminent leader of the civil-rights movement, and Robert E Lee, the general who led the Confederate army, a state holiday – TO BE OBSERVED ON THE SAME DAY – AND STILL GET ELECTED President of the United States of America. Then, as POTUS, you can award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to a staunch segregationist like William J Fullbright. Yes, you can! And, you can do all of this and STILL be the putative first black President of the United States of America.

Of course, if you are a Republican, don’t try this at home…or at the 100th birthday party of a former Democrat. ‘Cuz, if you do, that would make you a RAAAAAAAAAAAAACIST!

It’s all about optics.

Part of Obama’s multi-million-dollar, taxpayer-funded Asia trip was supposed to include a visit to his old Indonesian stomping grounds, so Michelle and the kiddies could see where daddy grew up. Since his time in the U.S. Senate, Obama has been using taxpayers to fund his family trips back to his various “homelands.” One of the first things he did as a Senator was take an official “fact finding” (i.e. taxpayer financed) trip to Kenya with his wife, where he visited his father’s family and introduced them to his family.

But it wouldn’t look very good to have the Obamas spending millions of tax dollars on yet another vacay, while little Johnny back home has his long-planned vacation to Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon cancelled because Obama, out of spite, has closed them.

Speaking of the Grand Canyon, Obama has shut down and barricaded the entrance to the Grand Canyon park, despite the fact that the government of AZ offered to pay the costs of keeping the park operating during the government shutdown. Many small businesses near the park depend on the tourist trade; if the park remains closed, these people will lose their businesses, and may also lose their homes and life savings.

A couple of days ago, Obama went on a business channel and tried to talk the stock market down, telling traders they “should be afraid” of the government shutdown.

What kind of president deliberately tries to spook financial markets, and puts innocent Americans at risk of losing their livelihoods, just to score political points?

This punk is the the sleaziest POS ever to occupy the office of the president.

You can check out the optics later, but here is what it says – I know that you are going to need a whole box of Kleenex:

‘Because of the shutdown, only 15 people will care for the White House and the Obama family — down from 90.

Boo-hoo!

Be thankful that you have not yet be threatened with the sans-culottes. While you might like to demonise the TP, it has too much respect for the Constitution, the Founders, and themselves to do what OWS-like mobs did to similarly imperialistic and impervious rulers in the 18th century.

Hint: You can get an idea of whom the Obamas are depicted as from the highlighted sentence above.

Resist We Much on October 4, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Obama is a weird anomaly, someone who is good at getting himself elected despite being terrible at basic politics.

Mayday on October 4, 2013 at 11:30 AM

More theater from the president.

What exactly is he doing besides playing golf and robbing Americans of their leisure activities?

Marcus Traianus on October 4, 2013 at 11:46 AM

Wait, JugEars was going to Hawaii again?

pain train on October 4, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Yup. Another thinly disguised vacay while inflicting pain on the little people and WWII vets.

Obama’s Asian adventure cancelled? No problem, I’m sure he schooled Kerry in the appropriate techniques for bowing.

TXUS on October 4, 2013 at 10:28 AM

I am sure Barry instructed Kerry that HE is the only one who swallows. Kerry is only authorized to spit.

RandallinHerndon on October 4, 2013 at 12:02 PM

Are the golf courses around DC shut down?

cornbred on October 4, 2013 at 12:10 PM

Obama can’t go to Asia, dogs rejoice.

Darn they must really be suffering.

Meanwhile soldier cannot buy groceries. But I learned Obama’s golf course is open for his use.

dogsoldier on October 4, 2013 at 12:18 PM

When will obama forfeit his salary, like 120 congresscritters already did, from both sides?

Pelosi didn’t, so far. All the other ‘leaders’ did, incl Harry.

What? We should expect Obama to sacrifice? Why should he sacrifice when has already sacrificed enough for us already. Hold on, ……… just ate a Snickers. Now I’m out of North Korean functionary mode and thinking clearer. Hell yeah he should give up his pay!!!

RandallinHerndon on October 4, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Everything that I have read about the cancellation of his Asia trip was that his handlers did not think he should go. He probably is sitting around an pouting because his handlers would not let him go.
He did not need to go, but Kerry needed to stay home to. It seems to me that the government is shut down. Kerry going is spending money that this country does not have.

Portia on October 4, 2013 at 1:09 PM

Obama must stay home to lead the workers as they strike to shut down the factory, because the owners aren’t being fair…and it’s all the fault of the other half of the workers, or something…

Dems’ worst nightmare – people figure out the gummint doesn’t actually affect their lives. Too bad they think they are winning, eh?

DublOh7 on October 4, 2013 at 1:50 PM

How long can Obama go without hitting the links ?

Obama had access to a couple of powerful election-machines who papered over his own deficiencies.
That’s all.
