Harry Reid: No, we won’t agree to fund NIH in order to restart treatment for kids with cancer

posted at 3:21 pm on October 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via the Free Beacon, what’s the most amazing thing about this? That Reid gets a variation of the “why do you hate children?” question that’s typically reserved for Republicans? Or that he actually responds, when asked if he’ll agree to the House’s new bill to fund NIH in the name of keeping clinical trials for kids with cancer up and running, “Why would we want to do that?”

Am I awake?

Remember, both he and Obama already approved a House bill on Monday that made sure troops would continue to get paid during the shutdown. They’re not opposed to small, targeted, piecemeal bills in principle, in other words; they’ve already showed that, if the politics of saying no are sufficiently toxic, they’ll agree to fund federal agencies whose sustained deprivation would lead to egregious outcomes. In fact, the core Democratic message about the GOP is that, in opposing ObamaCare, they’re trying to deny uninsured Americans treatment for their illnesses. So here’s Boehner and the House caucus trying to counter that with the same sort of piecemeal bill that Senate Democrats already passed two days ago, and Reid decides that maintaining his “no negotiation” posture is worth telling cancer patients to chillax for awhile. Either he’s really committed to not giving an inch or he’s betting big that the media won’t punish him for taking this position. Normally I’d say that’s a smart bet, but the fact that CNN is asking this question at all makes me wonder.

Update: Indeed.

Dear republicans

I wasn’t sure if the shutdown is a good idea or not, but after the first day i am convinced it is the best idea ever

Congress should fund every damn program in a different bill, make the democrats on record voting against
*Kids with cancer
*Food stamps
*Medicaid
*Our vets
*Heap program
*Schip
*Wic
*Section 8
*Vouchers
*Schools
*whatever

(sorry if i don’t know more programs, the above is just what my neighbor has, paying more rent because i (section 8) pays it)

Its probably the first time that republicans have a chance to win the low info crowd, we can have all democrats on record voting against the little guy

And of course we will hear more stupid crazy statements from democrats similar to Reid’s nonsense

AS IN BRAVEHEART,HOLD,HOLD,HOLD

CNN will not let this one slide. First of all, it’s their clip, so they’ll milk it for all it’s worth. Secondly, the part that’s really gonna get them riled up is the last part of the exchange where Reid questions someone of Dana Bash’s intelligence. Which is code for “I didn’t think you were so stupid to ask me such a question”. Think she’s gonna let Reid get away with that one?

This is all turning to crap for the Democrats. After the house passes this piece of funding today, how can the senate not pass it? Every senator will be talking about it until they do. As each piecemeal bill is passed by the house, all the pressure goes to the democrats.

If the democrats wait too long, there will be never be a vote to directly fund several departments like the EPA!

Look for that last house CR, the one that only delays the individual mandate, to be magically passed by the senate and signed by Obama. At this point, that is already the best deal the democrats are going to get.
