Darrell Issa’s committee to investigate why open-air memorials were closed as part of shutdown

posted at 8:01 pm on October 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

I was hoping he would, and now he is.

House oversight committee chairman Darrell Issa has launched an investigation into why the WWII memorial and other open-air monuments have been shut down.

“These properties belong to the American people. They do not belong to a Political party. There is no reason to ever shut those folks out from that,” said Representative Mike Kelly in an emotional speech…

Issa’s investigation is at its preliminary stages, Frederick Hill, his spokesman, said. But his committee will be exploring whether decisions were made to close monuments and other attractions for political reasons, potentially as a means of worsening the pain of a shutdown to increase political pressure on House Republicans.

The House Committee on Natural Resources posted an interactive map up showing photos of various parks around D.C. — not all of which have been closed, at least as of this writing. It’s the popular ones like the Lincoln Memorial, it seems, that were targeted first, which is entirely consistent with the cardinal rule of shutdown theater. And some of the ones that are closed this time weren’t closed during the ’95 shutdown. The Daily Caller has a photo of the Lincoln Memorial from that era showing the information booth closed but with visitors in the background at Abe’s feet. The essence of shutdown theater in one line: “Popular Washington spots such as the World War II memorial are now guarded by more security personnel than they are during normal operations, while federal employees have been dispatched to put up barricades on capital bike paths and other public grounds that are not usually patrolled at all.”

Via the Corner, here’s Jay Carney trying and failing to come up with a non-political explanation for why vets were allowed into the WWII Memorial this morning. The closure order, he notes, specifically exempts “First Amendment activities.” What are “First Amendment activities”? See this cached page from the National Park Service’s website. (The website isn’t live at the moment because, in another dumb part of shutdown theater, unmanned government websites have to be closed too.) Essentially, every park as part of normal practice is required by the First Amendment to allow things like protesting, leafletting, religious ceremonies, etc. They can, however, require a permit for groups larger than 25 people and they can, in order to keep the park orderly, force people who are protesting/leafletting/holding the ceremony to do so within a designated area. In other words, the policy on “First Amendment activities” isn’t about granting anyone special access that the rest of the public is denied; it’s about limiting the access of certain people who come to the park to do noisy/controversial stuff that might be disruptive to other visitors. The Honor Flight vets aren’t in that category, obviously. They’re there to use the park for its intended purpose, i.e. quietly remembering the fallen and reminiscing about the war. If that’s a “First Amendment activity” worthy of special admission, then the barricades should be removed from every memorial because basically everyone in the country qualifies. Carney’s just grasping for a “neutral” non-political excuse here. But then, you knew that.

From Bryan Preston:

BREAKING: White House Ordering Hundreds of Privately Run, Privately Funded Parks to Close

UPDATE 10/2/13 @ 7:27 pm Central: I just heard from Mr. Meyer. He emails:

It’s official. They are shutting all of us down ASAP. Marching orders straight from the White House.

Warren Meyer of Phoenix, AZ, is owner and president of Recreation Resource Management, Inc. RRM employs about 400-500 camp workers and managers across about a dozen states. It is one of a handful of companies that have been managing national parks and campgrounds as tenants for years, through previous government shutdowns including the last one in 1995-1996. Those previous shutdowns never closed any of the parks managed in this way, but the current shutdown threatens closure….

The parks not only do not cost the taxpayers any money, they pay funds into the Treasury out of the fees park users pay. Shutting them down will cost the taxpayers money.

How much? Meyer told the Tatler that his parks generate hundreds of thousands of dollars per week. Multiply that across his competitors and the Treasury could lose a few million dollars, in what is essentially free money to the government, over the course of the shutdown.

Which, as Meyer points out, is unnecessary, as these management companies are not revenue losers, but revenue generators for the Treasury.

He writes, “However, today, we have been told by senior member of the US Forest Service and Department of Agriculture that people “above the department”, which I presume means the White House, plan to order the Forest Service to needlessly and illegally close all private operations. I can only assume their intention is to artificially increase the cost of the shutdown as some sort of political ploy.

Obama demonstrated just how much he truly hates the military, how UN-Patriotic he is, and how much disrespect he had for this nation & for those who have sacrificed so much for this nation.

Obama ordered the WWII Memorial shut down, barricaded, and guarded to keep WWII vets from visiting the site! He provided more security there to keep vets away than he did UN Benghazi to protect an Ambassador & 3 Americans.

I understand he is PUNISHING Americans for opposing him and his agenda.

Every day he demonstrates more and more why he is a threat to this nation and how much he hates it.

If aiding and abetting the perpetrators of 9/11/01 take over Libya was not enough evidence, if helping the terrorist group the Muslim Brotherhood take over Egypt was not enough, if running guns to Al Qaeda in Syria is not enough, if making his decision to run for President in the living room of a member of the terrorist group The Weatherman Underground was not enough….then maybe more acts like this will convince people just how badly he wants to complete what his daddy wanted to see happen to the US!

Michele said she was never proud of this nation before her Communist-tutored, hate-spewing, racist, anti-Americal pastor-mentored Community Organizing husband won the Presidency. After attempting to keep WWII Vets from seeing their memorial, I bet she is proud as h@LLC!

Florida Obamacare Navigator On Botched Rollout: “It’s Dead As A Doornail. It’s A Mess”…

An Obamacare Florida navigator called Monday’s planned insurance exchange rollout “dead as a doornail” after widespread problems prevented Floridians from accessing the Obamacare insurance exchanges.

Despite federal officials having three years after passage of the Affordable Care Act to plan for the launching of healthcare insurance exchanges, the federal website crashed on its first day of operation, preventing Floridians from accessing the health insurance exchange system.

“It’s dead as a doornail. It’s not working,” John Foley, a paid Obamacare navigator, told the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Foley is an attorney with the government-funded Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County.

Foley’s assessment was particularly troubling for Obamacare supporters given Foley’s role in implementing Obamacare and the Legal Aid Society’s ongoing cooperation with the Obama administration.

“It’s a mess. It’s terribly disappointing,” Foley added. “They [federal officials] have been pushing it for so long, and people have been excited to see it, but apparently it’s not coming.”

Knowing O’s admin. probably as much as his “infrastructure signs” during his stimulus extravaganza!

Oh yes, I remember those signs. We were living in Chicago and they were everywhere. What a boondoggle.

It really takes a rocket scientist to recognize a power play. And it took a bunch of ninety year olds in wheelchairs to take away their power. That says it all I think.

I saw this on Drudge today. I’m not familiar with the website but they had a lot of info on Obamacare.

Isn’t this the sixth or seventh thing he’s getting to the bottom of? Have we reached bottom on the first one….F&F…. yet?

Yes, on the MLK monument being barrycaded

Yes. It is open air.

How much did they spend on these barrycades anyway, and how are these “essential to human life” workers?

And now we find out the demand was nowhere near the millions?

Wow.

This sign was in place at the Statue of Liberty the morning after the midnight shutdown. LOOK at this sign! It is NOT a quick laminated thing. It is a FULLY DESIGNED sign. In fact, it looks like a professional ad for the Government SHUTDOWN.

It’s almost like they knew this was coming…
