Breaking: Obama invites Congressional leaders to WH shutdown summit

posted at 11:43 am on October 2, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Maybe Chris Christie’s criticism stung a little more than imagined.  After sitting on the sidelines for weeks, Barack Obama has finally called a meeting to resolve the budget standoff:

A White House official says President Barack Obama has invited congressional leaders to the White House Wednesday for a meeting on the government shutdown.

The official says Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker John Boehner, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi have been invited to the meeting. The official says Obama will urge the House to pass a spending bill to allow the government to reopen.

The meeting will take place at 5:30 this afternoon, according to a number of news reports:

Old and busted: Obama refuses to negotiate with bomb-strapping, gun-pointing legislators. New hotness: Time to talk about budgets, now that the media is … focusing on the White House’s efforts to keep nonagenarians from accessing public memorials?  The White House will probably point to this story instead:

The U.S. Army’s chief of staff on Wednesday urged a rapid resolution of a funding row that has led to a government shutdown, saying it was significantly harming the army’s day-to-day operations.

General Ray Odierno said the shutdown, the first in 17 years, “impacts significantly day-to-day operations”, forcing the military to cut training, travel and focus on tasks that were essential to current operations.

“The longer it goes on, the worse it gets. Every day that goes by, we are losing manpower, we are losing capability, so in my mind it is important we get this resolved,” he told Reuters in a telephone interview from Germany, where he was attending a conference.

Don’t bet on that being the reason, though. The executive branch’s handling of the shutdown has been a disaster, as has been the rollout of the ObamaCare exchanges.  They need to win a messaging cycle badly now, and one way of doing that is to broker a fix on funding the government — perhaps even with a concession on Congressional exemptions to ObamaCare, if not an agreement on a repeal of the highly-unpopular medical device tax. If nothing else, Obama may wrangle a one-week clean CR from Reid in order to dial down the bad press.

Update: Boehner declares victory:

Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck released a statement welcoming the invite: “We’re pleased the president finally recognizes that his refusal to negotiate is indefensible. It’s unclear why we’d be having this meeting if it’s not meant to be a start to serious talks between the two parties.”

We’ll see.

Update: Congressional Democrats will hold pressers today, but …

Stealing thunder, etc etc.

Update: The Washington Examiner offers a headline that pretty much explains why the White House is in retreat now: “Shutdown overreach: More guards at WWII memorial than Benghazi; Park Service closes park it doesn’t run.” Truly mind-boggling incompetence.

First he won’t negotiate, while his friends brand the Pubs “terrorists”. Now he will. This guy is all urbane smoke and mirrors. It is no surprise that America’s stature has dramatically declined, even from the tenure of Bush, who was universally despised by America’s enemies. There is no principled leadership here, only radical agenda befitting a college sophomore majoring in liberal arts.

paul1149 on October 2, 2013 at 12:15 PM

The polling numbers must be bad for Barry. He likes to remain ‘above the fray’.

And what is he going to say during negotiations? Pelosi and Reid are doing exactly what he wants.

Maybe he’ll stand up and say “I won!”

How is passing the Vitter amendment that seeks to end congressional exemptions a win?

It’s been revealed – as if we didn’t know already – that Boehner connived with Reid to lobby for the exemptions so you really think they will not find a way around it?

And if the goal is to eventually repeal Obamacare, why are we helping ease the pain of the law by removing the medical device tax?

The GOP would be STUPID to go for these shiny objects as sufficient compromise.

And trust me, their base will NOT be fooled!

Let me predict that if that is the final deal, the GOP polling will drop like a hot potato and 2014 will be a greater bloodbath for the Establishment class.

We are really mad out here and will accept no gimmicks.

It’s really old slang. I lived in England throughout the 80′s and it was barely used then. Any Brit who uses it now, especially on an American site, knows what they are doing. It’s no slip of the tongue so to speak. No pun intended. It’s used for effect.

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on October 2, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Republicans went to the table, over and over and over again. It was passed over their heads with nary a how-do-you-do.

Obama called a “summit” back then, too. He took the majority of speaking time for himself – not his side, himSELF – and then had the House “deem” the Senate bill “passed” anyway, with zero changes.

Meanwhile, basically none of the things he promised are coming to pass, while everything Ryan et al warned him about are happening in front of our eyes.

Alinsky Rules For Radicals, Rule #4:

4.“Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”

Make Obama life up to his own promises to

“go line by line through every item in the federal budget and eliminate programs that don’t work, and make sure that those that do work, work better and cheaper…”

Remember when Obama criticized President Bush because the national debt had risen from $5 Trillion to $9 Trillion (an increase of $4 Trillion)?

Well, Obama’s own OMB estimates that the FY-end 2013 gross federal debt is now $17.25 Trillion (an increase of $8.25 Trillion!)

Obama has already added more than twice as much debt as was added during the entire Bush administration.

It’s time to “go line by line through every item in the federal budget and eliminate programs that don’t work”.

And oh, by the way, one of the programs that doesn’t work is…

…Obamacare!

ITguy on October 2, 2013 at 12:48 PM

“I actually made it through this morning at 8:00 A.M. I have a preexisting condition (Type 1 Diabetes) and my income base was 45K-55K annually, I chose tier 2 “Silver Plan” and my monthly premiums came out to $597.00 with $13,988 yearly deductible!!!

There is NO POSSIBLE way that I can afford this so I “opt-out” and chose to continue along with no insurance.

I received an email tonight at 5:00 P.M. informing me that my fine would be $4,037 and could be attached to my yearly income tax return.

Then you make it to the “REPERCUSSIONS PORTION” for “non-payment” of yearly fine. First, your drivers license will be suspended until paid, and if you go 24 consecutive months with “Non-Payment” and you happen to be a home owner, you will have a federal tax lien placed on your home.

You can agree to give your bank information so that they can easy “Automatically withdraw” your “penalties” weekly, bi-weekly or monthly! This by no means is “Free” or even “Affordable.”

If you like your plan, you can be forced into government insurance.

And there’s the rub, really. Medicaid expansion is supposed to be a significant portion of getting people “off the ER teat” but progs gloss over the fact that this means people are getting ALL their health care paid by taxpayers, not just the ER portion, assuming she can find doctors that accept Medicaid.

According to verbalicious this is a great thing.

Then again she never did answer the question of what happens if you couldn’t come up with the $14,000 deductible in the case of a major medical.

He’s in the middle, of course it’s the middle of a Reid/Dog Eater human sandwich but still.

I suspect that the IPAB would make that issue a non-issue….

The U.S. Army’s chief of staff on Wednesday urged a rapid resolution of a funding row that has led to a government shutdown, saying it was significantly harming the army’s day-to-day operations.

This ‘story’ is in fact a STORY!

It was actually taken from remarks made BEFORE they passed the military component of the CR and it is focused on Sequestration.

Bad enough to get the non-sequitor story from the msm, now I have to ‘vet’ the stories here on hotair.

I should have been clear. States can impose penalties for failure to pay state taxes and state fines. The federal government has no say in that.

The only way the above might be true is if it is in one of the state that already had a Romneycare program

chemman on October 2, 2013 at 1:28 PM

The executive branch’s handling of the shutdown has been a disaster, as has been the rollout of the ObamaCare exchanges. They need to win a messaging cycle badly now, and one way of doing that is to broker a fix on funding the government — perhaps even with a concession on Congressional exemptions to ObamaCare, if not an agreement on a repeal of the highly-unpopular medical device tax. If nothing else, Obama may wrangle a one-week clean CR from Reid in order to dial down the bad press.

Incompetence exposed in the worst of ways.

I love the unintended and unplanned in all of this.

It’s a glorious time in America.

Schadenfreude on October 2, 2013 at 1:28 PM

and Hot Air, I haven’t seen the story of WH denying access to vets (not claiming it’s not true) on non-conservative blogs

Can.I.be.in.the.middle on October 2, 2013 at 12:00 PM

LOL! Why would non-conservative blogs admit that O’bama was capable of screwing something up?

Not terribly bright, are you?

Del Dolemonte on October 2, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Rs, don’t cave. You are Putin.

Schadenfreude on October 2, 2013 at 1:28 PM

Rs, respect the vets. Don’t cave!!!

Schadenfreude on October 2, 2013 at 1:30 PM

As for the Obama ‘summit’, this is all about getting the video clips of Obama telling the country he will never negotiate with people he has used the most vile rhetoric he could think of for the last several years, off of the news.

That is just the deductible. It doesn’t even include the 60/40 or 80/20 a lot of these plans also have.

Or he’s just going to say, ok I listened to you, now go do what I want, as he has countless times before.

dogsoldier on October 2, 2013 at 1:31 PM

Roger Hedgecock read a memo yesterday, from 0bama…from the day before the Sequestration started…to agency heads, ordering them to make everything as obnoxious as possible for the peasants, while protecting the phoney baloney bureaucrat jobs, with specific instructions of how to ‘make it hurt’ (likely from jarett).
No doubt the same sort of thing was ordered this time.

Another thing is that the House Bill funding the military, also funded civilian contractors. However, after signing, the Punk in Chief said “Just the military. Furlough the civilians”…so that they could whine to the media about how they would lose their homes etc…

Schadenfreude on October 2, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Mitch McConnell needs to take Ted Cruz with him.
Not to negotiate, or even speak.
Just to, like, sit there.
