Open thread: Obama to make undoubtedly helpful statement about shutdown at 4:45 p.m. ET; Update: “You don’t get to extract a ransom for doing your job”

posted at 4:30 pm on September 30, 2013 by Allahpundit

Two ways he could go with this. One: Something conciliatory designed to make it easier for Boehner to agree to an eleventh-hour face-saving compromise. Two: Tough talk designed to show Republicans he intends to use the bully pulpit every day during a shutdown to make sure they bear the brunt of public discontent. The two aren’t mutually exclusive, of course, but we can all guess where the emphasis will lie. Per Dave Weigel, odds of a “let me be clear” happening shortly: North of 95 percent.

Boehner told reporters within the past hour that there’ll be no clean CR tonight. Stand by for updates.

Update: Wouldn’t surprise me if O uses the bulk of his time to pitch the ObamaCare exchanges opening tomorrow. The shutdown has created an intense media spotlight for him today; he’d be a moron not to use it while people are paying attention to get young adults to log in and sign up in the a.m. That may end up being his core message contra the GOP, in fact — “I’m not going to defund a program that’s starting literally tomorrow.”

For what it’s worth, a new poll shows that only one-third of the public wants Congress to defund, delay, or repeal O-Care. In fact, those who say they want the law expanded outnumber those who want delay/defunding.

Update: You might hear O mention this convenient data tidbit too.

Update: I’m skeptical, but here you go. For what it’s worth:

They’re going to pass it through the Senate when Boehner might not even be able to pass it through the House?

Update: The money line from O’s presser ended up being something about one faction of one party in one house of one branch of the government attempting to dictate terms after losing this fight in the last election. The rest of it was, as expected, a sales pitch for ObamaCare plus a reminder that the law can’t be defunded in the CR since spending for most of its core functions has already been appropriated. In other words, he said, the exchanges will open tomorrow, no matter what happens tonight.

The federal government should be shut down.

Just plain shut down.

Broke stuff should always be shut down and replaced.

Looky! All of my brakes have failed but I guess I will start the car up anyway and take a spin and see what happens??

Unfortunately, I guess so.

Hey Harry…do your goddamned job and pass a budget.

BigWyo on September 30, 2013 at 10:06 PM

So be it, stop funding the government! It’s time to play hard ball.

Even better idea was from Pat Buchanan, send a bill for every portion of government that gets funded. Leave out O-Care.

That does not count.

Which is, of course, a lie. It assumes that the only thing that matters is who won the presidential election. But everyone in the House won an election to represent their constituents. Their obligation is to represent their constituents, who did NOT send them to the House to rubber stamp Obamacare, no matter what Obama or Pelosi or Reid claim.

“No one wants this s–t” …direct quote.

Then I guess they should’ve voted for Republicans in the Senate and Mitt Romney. Elections have consequences, they will deal.

libfreeordie on September 30, 2013 at 5:47 PM

They voted for Republicans in the House. But you want those same Republicans in the House to cave, and ignore their constituents. I guess those House elections don’t have consequences?

You’re going to have to work harder to fake that sincerity about elections having consequences.

Thanks for the imput, I have it figured out now,
1. Republicans 69%
2. Democrats 58%
3 The Prez 47%

I am sorry I missed it.
If you have a “D” behind your name 105% of the people will blame you.
If you have a “R” behind your name only 69% will blame you.
That makes more sense.

If so much of what is done for the people can be shut down and not available to so many who need those services, then maybe the govt does too much. They need a lot of diversity. The govt should be broken up into much smaller parts and some of the services could be performed solely by the states. They could lower our federal taxes at the same time. Win, win!

When Democrats took over the House and Senate, controlling both for the last 2 years of the Bush administration and for the 1st 2 years of the Obama administration, it was the Liberals’ job to pass a budget, which is required by law annually. Even with a ‘Super majority’ Democrats could not pass a budget.

It is obvious that the reason was not the GOP but either the icompetence / inability of Liberals to do so or the lack of respect for the law and no desire to obey it.

No Budget has been passed since Harry Reid took over control of the Senate.

…and sice then the only people who have been held hostage are the American people.

I had the misfortune of hearing the entire address on the radio. I can’t remember the last time I heard such a whiny B!7@# more deserving of being pimp-slapped.

‘Doing Your Job’

The Senate works an average 180 days per year…and even then they do not obey the laws, do not accomplish the minimum required by the law (an annual budget, for example). Harry Reid, for example, during those 180 days at work refused to allow bills passed to be dicussed on the floor and refuses to agree to meet with House leaders now to get a compromise to end the government shut down.

For REFUSING TO DO / NOT DOING his job, Harry Reid has become a Millionaire by manipulation and using his position in the Federal Government to further his own wealth and power. He gets extravagant vacations paid for by tax payers, use of military aircraft for recreational and personal travel, private jets, expense accounts, multiple office (DC & sevral back in their home states) expense accounts, trips abroad, security, and the ability to write off almost any expense as a job-related tax-deductable expense.

Harry reid openly delcared that he is in no rush to end the Govt shut down because ‘every day that goes by is another day Americans are blaming the GOP’. Reid has orchestrated and continues to perpetuate a government shutdwon to use it as a political tool against Republicans…and Americans are moronically proving that why YES, the American people are THAT STUPID to hear this and still blame the GOP.

Harry Reid, Obama, Pelosi, & other Liberals are holding Americans hostage, inflicting pain upon them, while blaming the GOP for the shutdown.

Obama sold Obamacare on LIES.

Pelosi told the American people they had no right to know what was in the bill until it had been passed…despite Obama declaring Americans would have 48 hours to read the bill before a vote was cast.

Obama continues to violate the Constitution in the institution of the law.

And Harry Reid is saying to both the GOP AND AMERICANS, “F* YOU – We are not negotiating – we will get Obamacare as is or we will continue to keep the govt shut down (and blame the GOP while we are doing it).”
