Video: SNL zings ObamaCare in cold open

posted at 2:01 pm on September 29, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

I saw a lot about this on Twitter last night before hitting the sack, but didn’t see it until this morning. It’s a Mulligan stew of references and zingers, including one about Ted Cruz (meh), and another about how we could save $5 billion a year in emergency rooms (better).  The biggest audience reaction came near the end when Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul showed up in character to claim that ObamaCare caused Walter White to become a meth-brewing murderer, but the actual best description of what ObamaCare does comes earlier, when a father tells the audience that his deadbeat son now never has to work for health insurance ever again.

For me, it’s a mixed bag, but Twitter seemed delighted, so YMMV (via Instapundit):

I think the biggest takeaway from this is that the “hip” audience sees ObamaCare as a ripe target for satire, especially its rollout.  Needless to say, if the train wreck wasn’t apparent to everyone now, the opening skit last night would have been all Ted Cruz and hysterical Republicans.  That may not be a “cultural shift,” as some on Twitter surmised, but it’s not a good sign for Democrats who expect pop culture to always have their backs.

Michael Ramirez gives us a more accurate presentation of the rollout of ObamaCare, just as the countdown comes to an end (via Power Line):

ramirez-obamacareAlso, be sure to check out Ramirez’ terrific collection of his works: Everyone Has the Right to My Opinion, which covers the entire breadth of Ramirez’ career, and it gives fascinating look at political history.  Read my review here, and watch my interviews with Ramirez here and here.  And don’t forget to check out the entire Investors.com site, which has now incorporated all of the former IBD Editorials, while individual investors still exist.

I like the way the filled the stage behind him, just like the real life Jeantels who bobble their empty heads behind obama.

Folks, work harder.

What you see when obama speaks are the Looters/Moochers of your labor, while they consider you officially, via the WH “the Ayatollahs of the land”.

The USA is now the US of Zimbabwe, with her very own Mugabe-like thug in chief. What a country!

Schadenfreude on September 29, 2013 at 2:08 PM

they filled the stage…

Schadenfreude on September 29, 2013 at 2:08 PM

The media accept that you, the hard-working taxpayers are the “Ayatollahs” and the ‘new’ Iranians are the “reasonable people” now.

The RINOs, like the dummy congressman who just spoke, feel the same way.

2014, ALL out, from the left to the right. NO more breaks for any worms of the land. Starve them or they will totally destroy you and yours.

I hate the RINOs more than Kucinich now. He has way more consistent decency in his beliefs, even if I disagree 100% with them.

“Your hate for this president is coming before your love of this country,” said Rep. David Scott, D-Ga. “Because if you love this country you would not be closing it down.”

A RINO congressman just said “how to deal with the extreme conservatives…”.

Dude, by throwing you out on your political azz in 2014.

NO more exceptions. Mark my word 2014 will be epic.

2010 was just the warm up.

Such destruction, from both sides, there never was.

Nor such arrogance form the ruling class of the USA, where two classes of people are unconstitutional.

If obama’care’ is that good then NO exceptions.

This, the unconstitutionality and arrogance of both sides in DC will either ‘kill’ them politically or kill the land.

The founders never imagines such impertinent royal rulers of the US of America.

Otherwise they’d have included “No exceptions for you for any laws you impose on the ones who sustain you with their labor”.

The fat lady has not sung and when she sings the ‘dancing’ will be lots of fun.

But even then, House Republicans did not suffer terrible consequences, as Bachmann and others point out. After the shutdowns, the GOP was re-elected to control of the House in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2004 before losing in 2006.

Considering the hype about “SNL slams Obama/ObamaCare” coming out of righty circles on the interwbzz, I thought this sketch was more glancing blow (that the writers desperately desperately wished they didnt have to write) than total smackdown.

Baby steps I guess. Lets see how they treat Obama from here on out.

I’ll wager a thousand quatloos against a box of Cronuts next that weeks’ opening sketch is back to the old reliable “dumb scary unhip evil reich-wingy wingnut Republicans are teh stupid scary unhip ha ha ha” type so common on SNL since forever.

This shutdown may go on for weeks, even months. Some will blame Republicans, others the Democrats, others will blame both sides. Many will think that it it unavoidable result of the highly divisive, purely partisan nature of the Obamacare legislation.

But without the shut down we wouldn’t have as strong a negotiating position. On the contrary, without the shutdown we wouldn’t have any negotiating position.

If this coming shutdown rolls on for weeks, there’s going to be a clamor for some kind of compromise from both sides, some way to get us out of it. But really, it’s the other side that is intransigent, that won’t compromise, in fact from Reid to Obama they have said explicitly that they will not even consider compromise of any sort. But considering the grand scope of the entire government, we have asked for so little. All we say is to delay Obamacare and the havoc it is wreaking for a single year.

No, fool. NASA knew of the problems with both and sent them up anyway killing all aboard.

Obama and his cohorts KNOW of the problems with Obamacare and are hell-bent on launching it anyway.

Smart people scuttle a launch when they are aware of defects, flaws, and an inclement environment…all of which are present with Obamacare.

But, look on the bright side! I want ALL of Obamacare implemented immediately.

No delays for anyone or anything.

No waivers for anyone, any group, or any company.

No Federal subsidies for federally-run state exchanges since the law EXPLICITLY prohibits such. Only state-run exchanges qualify.

No repeal of any tax so that you will have to pay more for your OTC drugs, medical devices, and medication.

No quick lines to get to see a doctor or have a test taken, especially for people like you.

In other words, I want you to be incarcerated in a medical system run like Mid Staffs.

I want your insurance premiums to skyrocket.

I want you to have to explain to your parents why their Medicare has been cut.

I want you to have to tell your dying child why the Health Czar, Cruella Sebelius, thinks that she ought to just die already because rules, you know.

I want you to cry out in agony because of the pain that the Establishment, who will not be subjected to any of it, has inflicted upon you even though Obamacare has had a higher unfavourable than favourable rating since May, 2009, which was 9 months before it was even signed into law.

That’s what I want for you.

Obama lied about Obamacare.

It was worse the GHWB’s infamouse “no new taxes pledge.”

Because Obama went on the stump over and over again loudly proclaiming that this increase in health costs is unsustainable, over and over he said it to the screaming crowds, that we absolutely must pass his bill to cut costs dramatically, or we and the economy are sunk.

But health care costs won’t sink dramatically.
They will rise — sharply.
Obama lied.

There’s no suggestion of dishonesty on Obama’s part, no reference to how ruinously expensive it’s going to be, no reference to doctor shortages or a lowering of the quality of healthcare, or how people are losing the insurance they wanted to keep, etc.

All of those things are ripe for the kind of biting comedy that SNL pretends it’s interested in doing.

In the interest of an informed debate, we’ve compiled a list of job actions with strong proof that ObamaCare’s employer mandate is behind cuts to work hours or staffing levels. As of Sept. 25, our ObamaCare scorecard included 313 employers. Here’s our latest analysis, focusing on cuts to adjunct hours at nearly 200 college campuses. The ObamaCare list methodology is explained further in our initial coverage; click on the employer names in the list below for links to supporting records, mostly news accounts or official documents.

We’ll continue to update the list, which we encourage you to share and download into a spreadsheet to sort and analyze. If you know of an employer that should be on the list and can provide supporting evidence, please contact IBD at jed.graham@investors.com.

The list is something to behold.

We know Cruz was reading his little girls a bedtime story from the Senate floor, but the MSM and SNL are trying to make him look foolish. As if he randomly talks in rhyme and hates Obama (get it, he’s a non-serious person and a blathering “racist”).

Many say that full implementation of Obamacare is the way to go, without exemptions etc [yet many exemptions have already been given]. I often feel the same way.

This way the full nightmare of Obamacare will become obvious, and then repeal will be easier. OR… when the nightmare is obvious …. the push will be for single payer.

“This is horrible, the hospitals and insurance companies and doctors… just aren’t functioning right! We need the govt to take over!”

That’s the real nightmare.

Maybe this is the right approach on Obamacare. Delay it, defund it, try to stop the monster in its tracks.

I think we can both agree that, if the folks in charge of 0bamacare were in charge of launching space shuttles, the boosters would be lit at the wrong point in the countdown, and they’d probably forget to bolt them to the external fuel tank.

Putting the likes of 0bama in charge of the space program would likely result in some spectacular Wile E. Coyote moments.

The part where the illegal alien (“my family came here from Liberia, for the welfare benefits”) is afraid to go to the E.R. because he doesn’t have health insurance is funny — but only because it’s so totally off base.

Illegal aliens aren’t afraid of the E.R. The know they have the right to be treated for “free” there, thanks to the 1986 federal law known as E.M.T.A.L.A. That law requires U.S. hospitals to treat anybody who shows up in the E.R., regardless of ability to pay, and regardless of citizenship status. Illegal aliens have been taking advantage of this law since its passage, and it has been costing U.S. taxpayers billions of dollars a year.

Illegal aliens know all about their rights to “free” stuff in the U.S., thanks largely to “community organizing” groups like the former ACORN, and La Raza. Laws like Obamacare provide many millions of dollars to these groups for “community outreach.”

AZCoyote on September 29, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Just the opposite. Jesse (Aaron Paul) said that the lack of Obamacare caused his friend to become a meth-brewing murderer.

This was SNL, so expecting conservative humor is expecting too much. Most of the humor came from the idea that Obama couldn’t find anyone who could present the case for Obamacare competently and sympathetically. Are you someone who likes going out of their way to find things to take offense at?

Late, but better late for SNL, than never…

Schadenfreude on September 29, 2013 at 2:06 PM

Don’t care. Still want to punch them all in the throat hard for advocating Obama and his garbage. No forgiveness and will never forget.

You’re a better person than I am.

Now there’s a perfect example of a rhetorical question.

Are you a liberal troll or just stupid? Clearly he is satirizing Obamacare, the giant steaming pile of bull dung.

Many others here have already cleaned your tiny hourglass on this idiotic post, but let me pile on.

First of all, there is no Space Shuttle strapped to the external fuel tank and solid rocket boosters in that cartoon. There is an ambulance. And nowhere do the names “Challenger” or “Columbia” appear, either on the ambulance or on the other flight components. But hey, to you Low-IQ Leftists, all Space Shuttles look the same!

Secondly, the brave astronauts on Challenger and Columbia participated in those missions of their own free will. They were not forced by the government to go up, and not threatened with legal penalties if they failed to comply. O’bamacare, on the other hand…

And finally, both Challenger and Columbia were in fact successful launches, and in the latter case a successful multi-day mission. To translate for your tiny mind, neither one of those missions blew up on the pad.

The only reason both met with disaster later was because of equipment failures. But that equipment was not designed to fail, and in fact it did not fail on many other STS missions. O’bamacare, on the other hand…

As usual, F-

Video: SNL zings ObamaCare in cold open

But, they still love Dear Leader and think Obamacare’s the cat’s meow.

That right there would have been sufficient, but I’m really glad you included the rest. Well said.

Cute allusion to Breaking Bad. Was that the guest star?

No. If he was doing that, there would be a noticeable leak in one of the booster cutting into the fuel tank after lift-off, or a chunk of insulation falling off it to hit the AHA ambulance.

…a chunk of insulation that fell off because the environmentalist whackos decided to use new Gaia-friendly foam insulation.

All the articles I am seeing on the so-called “ACA”, are telling me that I need to divorce my husband in order to stay financially afloat. If one of us has insurance, and the other doesn’t , then we aren’t eligible for subsidies, blah, blah, blah. He makes 21K a year (grad student in a research group), I make about the same, maybe a bit more if I work overtime (I build high voltage cabinets for locomotives, $12 bucks an hour, welcome to Idaho, the slave wage state). We’ve already talked about a divorce (in name only). We can’t afford to live otherwise.

“We have to pass the bill to see what’s in it”??? May the Powers that be d^mn all the jerko politicians who voted for this crap sandwich to the Ninth circle of h^ll.
