Video: Pelosi confuses Constitution, Declaration of Independence

We may have our disagreements on strategy and tactics, but I think we can all agree on a mid-afternoon Pelosi palate cleanser, right?  (Or perhaps more than one.) This one comes to us from The Weekly Standard’s Jeryl Bier, who waded through a speech Nancy Pelosi gave last week to find the former Speaker of the House confused between our two founding documents — the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence.  Appearing at a Center for American Progress event, Pelosi spoke about an 1848 suffragette conference in Seneca Falls:

“And so, it was 165 years ago, 165 years ago.  Imagine the courage it took for those women to go to Seneca Falls and do what they did there, to even leave home without their husband’s permission, or father’s, or whoever  it was.  To go to Seneca Falls, and to paraphrase what our founders said in the Constitution of the United States: they said the truths that are self-evident, that every man and woman, that men and women were created equal and that we must go forward in recognition of that.”

It is of course the Declaration of Independence and not the Constitution that contains the reference to self-evident truths:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

It’s not uncommon for people to confuse points between the two. In fact, the film The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance makes the same mistake in its classroom scene. It’s still a little disconcerting to see a high-ranking government official fail to correctly distinguish between the two documents, especially in a prepared speech.

What’s more significant in this speech is the agenda that the leader of the House Democratic Caucus stakes out in her speech, according to Jeryl:

Pelosi went on to name three priorities that she and those in her audience at CAP want Congress and the president to address: paycheck fairness, including raising the minimum wage; paid leave to care for sick family members via the Healthy Families Act; and universal child care.

Most Americans have the economy and job creation as their greatest concerns.  Two of the issues Pelosi puts as a priority have nothing to do with the concerns of most Americans, and the first one would actually make the job situation and economy worse.  Talk about not being on the same page …

On the other hand, Pelosi’s remarks did make for a great hashtag game on Twitter.

Although overly-lawyerly, the Supreme Court has incorporated the DOI into the Constitution:

Gulf, C. & S. F. R. CO. v. Ellis, 165 U.S. 150 (1897), amongst many other cases

So its not TECHNICALLY wrong in some people’s views to say what Pelosi said. It’s a common mistake though what she did, ones that people in the GOP make as well all the time. It is one of those mistakes I would classify as “commonly made, overlook it” like the missue of WHO and WHOM.

However, when people say we got our Constitution in 1776, that you should hammer them on.

It’s a common mistake for the ignorant and/or the illiterate, regardless of their lot in life, or their position in society/politics. They are two separate documents, and that is all.

And that’s supposed to be the point of it all – ignorance/illiteracy.

It’s as stupid as trying to differentiate members of Congress by calling them either Senator or Congressperson.

A Senator IS a Congressperson, because he/she is in the Congress of the United States. [Article I, Section 1].

But the stupidity continues, because the common mistake is morphed into fact.

More than just that. I had to do some searching to find something that could be posted, but my Dad worked as a weather observer at Pt Barrow, Wales, Nome, and King Salmon Alaska, and he said you could in fact see Russia from the hills just east of Wales – which is the far western edge of mainland Alaska.
The shortest distance between Alaska and Russia, which is pretty much at Wales, is 53 miles. The top of the hill just east of Wales is 1000 feet elevation. based on standard curvature of the earth / horizon calculations, yes you can see from mainland to mainland on a clear day.

I’m surprised that Ed or others missed the story about Nan and her troubles with the Catholic Church. Maybe it was on HotAir, but I haven’t seen it.

Late this month, the highest court at the Vatican declared that the Nan has no right to be granted Holy Communion, a sacrament celebrated by the Church as receiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ. To any devout and practicing Catholic, that would be a blow as harsh as ex-communication from the Church itself.

If HotAir picked up on the story, I apologize. I have been watching the media outlets for more on this development, but haven’t seen anything yet. I haven’t even seen or read a reaction from the Nan herself.
