Scarborough blasts Obama’s “harsh partisan speech” during Navy Yard shooting

posted at 2:01 pm on September 17, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

How bad was Barack Obama’s timing yesterday on his speech attacking Republicans for “hurting” Americans while the Navy Yard shooting was still under way?  All of the major networks — including MSNBC — cut away from the speech after Obama finished his remarks on the shooting, which means that most missed the partisan attack that followed, except for the flabbergasted reporters.  Joe Scarborough blasted Obama and the media this morning, arguing that if George W. Bush had tried something like that, he would have been “killed” by the press yesterday and today.  And his Morning Joe panel didn’t offer much of a defense, even as Scarborough explicitly pointed a finger at them:

“It was props — he brought his props along and he had this political,” Scarborough said. “And it was a harsh, partisan speech from the president of the United States on any day. But you know what? This president is frustrated and there is — he certainly has every right to do that. But on the day while people were hiding, while people were bleeding, while people were dying, while the nation was locked in on this — he’s talking about harsh partisanship and Republicans wanting to hurt people.”

“Mike [Barnicle], what is more partisan than not being able to put aside one of these stupid Washington battles — [postponing it] for a day,” Scarborough continued. “Never came under consideration. Never considered it. There’s not one person in the White House that said, ‘You know right down the block, people are dying right now and there’s a gunman on the loose and there’s local schools shutdown. The Capitol is on shutdown. And there may be a second or third gunman. And you know what? Maybe we’ll just give this speech tomorrow.’ Really, nobody even considered that? You believe Jay Carney — it never came under consideration? It’s unbelievable.” …

“I just can’t imagine if any other president did this — the ramifications,” Scarborough said. “George W. [Bush] — George W., can you imagine what certain people at this network in 2006, at this table … would have done? Mika [Brzezinski] would be killing George W. Everybody at this network would be killing George W. Everybody at The New York Times would be killing George W. Every journalist in Washington, D.C. would be killing George W.”

On cue, Brzezinski offered a lame defense, saying that the shooting put Obama in “a horrible position” — as if the President couldn’t have simply postponed the speech to another day, or at least the partisan-attack effort within it.  Scarborough wasn’t having any of it:

“He’s president of the United States. He should be smart enough — the guy should be smart enough. There should be one person there that had the guts to say, ‘Mr. President, you know people are dying right now. You probably should not do this. You know, comfort the nation today. Bash Republicans tomorrow.’”

For the second time in a week, Jay Carney had to defend his boss over the decision not to postpone a speech when the situation changed.  Needless to say, his protestations that the question of whether to put off the speech never arose didn’t exactly impress this panel, either.

“I’m not sure I would really believe Jay Carney about that,” John Heilemann said. “To say that it had been under consideration would simply open the door. My guess is that that may not have been not entirely true.”

As a welfare queens agitator the only thing that Obama enjoys in politics is to agitate one group against another and constantly attacks those who disagree with him… He is by far the most partisan President in history… The man simply cannot understand what it means to be President of “ALL PEOPLE”…

portlandon on September 17, 2013 at 2:32 PM

It all boils down to the fact there are NO ADULTS in this White House. Not all Presidents know the history of the office or have a grasp on all the details of what they need to do to be Presidential, but Barack Obama either has no one there who knows, or they know and they just don’t care. I’m becoming inclined to believe that later because, when confronted, they just defend, which means they’ll be doing it again next time.

It takes a little class to be able to hold back, Barack Obama has no class.

One important point here. This wasn’t Fort Hood where his infamous “shout out” speech was from somewhere else. HE WAS GIVING THIS SPEECH LESS THAN FOUR MILES AWAY FROM THE SCENE OF THE CRIME! Even if he couldn’t hear the sirens he could hear the silence from planes not taking of at Reagan National.

This was more than being a lazy stupid partisan. Obama simply didn’t care.

When Did Morning Television Get this Bad?

Perhaps it was fitting that Morning Joe was playing Let Down by Radiohead as its intro music this morning. Afterall, that is a shining metaphor in what they are presenting as news and commentary these days.

I’m not a media expert, but I studied at Medill and went on to pull a few masters degrees. I need intelligent information out of commentators at 6:45 in the morning. Apparently, I’m going to be wanting for the better part of my life.

CNBC was rambling about pornography and Aaron Ross Sorkin’s T-Shirt for a good ten minutes. MSNBC had one of the world’s best economists in the world on in Jeremy Sachs, and they could barely motion a coherent question to him. At some point Mika began wondering how the President could have gotten his message wrong about the Navy Yard shooting yesterday, as if she’d never seen him ever do that before. Has she ever paid any lick of attention to anything this guy has ever said after a tragedy?

This is must-avoid television, and it’s really an unfortunate event. Apparently the media has forgotten that decisions that ultimately lead to better development of the economy actually rely on the media to provide intelligent information.

Either they are hung over or someone is drugging the coffee pots.

These people are completely asleep at 7 am.

burrata on September 17, 2013 at 2:48 PM

I’m only surprised Mika didn’t note that Obama canceled Tejano Night at the Casa Blanca on Monday, to show his empathy for the Navy Yard slayings (of course by then they also knew it wasn’t an angry white Tea Party guy who did the shooting, and he wasn’t toting an AR-15 through the Navy Yard. Once you’ve lost two of your main talking points in going on the attack against gun control opponents, then it’s time to at least temporarily shelve the standard talking points and go the empathy route by scrubbing last night’s Latin music celebration).

jon1979 on September 17, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Yeh. It was beyond pathetic and what we’ve all come to expect with the Smallest Man in America. I’m looking forward to the Obama melt down. It’s gonna be epic.

The guy has serious mental/personality/dysfunctional problems and has surrounded himself with others that are also severely damaged. They have hooked their lives to this sicko jackass and will not recognize reality as well as what Asner said that they would be called racist. Whatever happened to “sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me” I really go out of my way at times now just to see if I can offend people, depending on their reaction is how i even want to be around them or have them as “friends”

retiredeagle on September 17, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Mika: “He was put into a horrible position.”

Tell that to the victims at the Navy Yard.

Yeah.. Obama was powerless yesterday, Absolutely powerless. That speech was already scheduled. The leader of the so called free world was put into the most horrible position one could imagine… he can ignore federal law.. arm terrorists against law.. order the killing of Bin Laden.. save the nation from economic collapse (ya.. I know)… but he was powerless over that speech.
The length at which people are willing to go to cover for him. Amazing to me. What do they see?

jon1979 on September 17, 2013 at 2:48 PM

Twerking to Latino music just isn’t all that enjoyable after not being able to pin blame for a massacre on a politically convenient target or meme. It was canceled because he heart just wasn’t in it.

In other words, don’t think that there was any empathy in the decision to cancel a concert other than a demand we feel sorry for the lazy stupid bastard for “not having anything to do” last night.

JellyToast on September 17, 2013 at 2:58 PM

Again, let me point out that he was giving this “super-important” speech practically within earshot of the Navy Yard. It would have been as if Reagan decided to talk about the SDI as they were plucking survivors out of the Potomac following the Air Florida crash. Classless doesn’t begin to describe it.

It was hardly fitting to the somber occasion of the terrorist attack on Fort Hood just a few hours before. The man has issues.

WHY. EVEN. MENTION. IT?

t8stlikchkn on September 17, 2013 at 6:35 PM

What I thought was particularly telling and interesting about the whole thing wasn’t just Scarborough blasting the truth. It was EVERYone else on the panel, Mika and everyone else. You could tell by ALL their faces that they KNEW Scarborough was right…and they were trying their hardest to come up with SOMETHING to defend the anointed one…and couldn’t. They just COULDN’T. Event their pathetic attempts couldn’t defend Obama on this one, and THEY KNEW IT. It was REALLY telling to me though, when Scarborough started on his “if W did it” bit. The liberal idiots around the table (it looked to me) were actually NODDING IN AGREEMENT with what he was saying. They knew that if Bush had made that horrible ideological attack speech against Democrats at a time like that…he would have been destroyed…obliterated…by EVERYONE at that table. And they nodded along with that sentiment…I think it was unconsciously…but they were nodding with it. It was disgusting to see such horrifying and outright hypocrisy on national TV. They were in the wrong…knew every bit of it…and yet STILL were trying to find ways to defend it. Just because it was “their guy” who was under fire. Disgusting.
