Rep. Justin Amash: Let’s be real, we’re doing the president a favor by trying to delay ObamaCare for one year

posted at 5:21 pm on September 16, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

The man’s got a point. Starting at around the 9:10 mark:

Well, we have to have compromise. The president himself is arguing that we’re not willing to compromise. We’re willing to compromise. And part of that compromise means when you want to borrow more money, we’re going to have to have some cuts in government. And that’s all Republicans are asking for. And we’re not talking about “draconian cuts” … We’re talking about delaying Obamacare for a year, which is something the president has asked for with the employer mandate. So, let’s delay it for everyone. I think we’re doing the president a favor if we delay it. The program is not ready to be implemented. If anything the president should be asking us to delay it because it’s better for him politically.

If President Obama is so focused on a good electoral showing for the 2014 midterms — if not to take back the House but at least to prevent the Republicans from gaining ground and furthering his lame-duckery — then running on ObamaCare probably isn’t going to be a big help. Try as they might to spin the many “kinks” and “glitches” that will assuredly emerge as the system begins its soft launch in just over two weeks and maintain ownership over the issue as a net positive, Democrats are going to have a long year working their way through the implementation of the deeply unpopular law. Why not take the employer-mandate delay another step further and give relief to all Americans? And as Paul Gigot points out, hey, maybe President Obama actually wouldn’t mind another shutdown battle — the better with which to campaign against those dastardly, obstructionist Republicans!

May Roberts suffer, badly, always, for what he inflicted on the land.

No, no delay, and no exemptions either.
Let everybody get stung by O-Care starting NOW.
A little democracy for everyone
(including government employees, elected officials, and their staffs),
Good & Hard!

Amash for Speaker!

Abby Adams on September 16, 2013 at 5:31 PM

no delay!

make them suffer from the reality of obamacare and not use a delay to attack us!

reliapundit on September 16, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Enact it now. Let the idiots in the government and general public who voted for this monstrosity not be shielded from the consequences of their idiocy.

abobo on September 16, 2013 at 5:53 PM

They are. By delaying the consequences of this horrible bill until after the next election, they are playing politics with peoples health care.

We need to get rid of the professional political class. Term Limits!

RoadRunner on September 16, 2013 at 5:53 PM

I find myself drifting towards the let it be implemented and watch the train wreck. A 100 million pool of anarchist may be just what the doctor ordered as this thing gets underway.

DanMan on September 16, 2013 at 5:53 PM

@Another Drew

Agreed. Obama wants to fuc* Americans? Fine. Fuc* ‘em hard and fast.

I want O’Bonehead care fully implemented NOW. I want all exemptions eliminated, and all Federal subsidies for congressvermin eliminated. I want the Full Monty NOW… rough and hard, not gentle like before.

Let the retarded Democrats who vote for socialism get it right now.

Jaibones on September 16, 2013 at 5:56 PM

Why delay Obamacare at this point?

The trainwreck is only two weeks away from hitting the broken rails. Delaying at this point will only help the Democrats in the 2014 elections.

If the Republicans only manage to delay it and it is still dumped on the backs of the American midddle class in 2015, the Republicans can look forward to a new, conservative party in 2016.

The establishment Republicans had better not underestimate how dangerous failing to stop the carnage of Obomacare is to their future.

Why delay Obamacare at this point?

MichaelGabriel on September 16, 2013 at 6:00 PM

I agree. And why are we so keen to do Obama a favor?

rrpjr on September 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM

It’s true. Just like Putin helped him out in Syria.

When you’re inexperienced, ignorant, and arrogant, and keep making decisions that leave you stuck in impossible positions, that kind of “help” is about all you’re going to get.

Socratease on September 16, 2013 at 6:04 PM

And as Paul Gigot points out, hey, maybe President Obama actually wouldn’t mind another shutdown battle — the better with which to campaign against those dastardly, obstructionist Republicans!

And who does Obama see as his mortal enemy?

He’s willing to negotiate with Putin and Assad over chemical weapons and the Syrian Civil War….

He’s willing to negotiate with the Mad Mullahs of Tehran over their development of nuclear weapons….

He’s willing to negotiate with the Taliban to undo all of the gains the US and the coalition made in Afghanistan….

He’s willing to negotiate with the Palestinian Authority who are making Samaria and Judea juden-rein….

But negotiate with the GOP over the $17 trillion debt ceiling, NEVER….

Negotiate with the GOP over the clusterfark of ACA and the individual mandate, NEVER…

Negotiate with the GOP over reducing the near record spending level of the federal government, NEVER…

And the GOP response, ‘let’s compromise’ – fully understanding that in Obama’s world compromise means you give up your position and principles and accept mine.

What does it say about Speaker Boehner when Putin can pwn Obama so easily, but Obama pwn’s the Speaker?

defunding obamacare is not realistic. However, the Rs, if they were clever instead of stupid, work to unify their party around what happens after the trainwreck.

there will be many people that will be unhappy…senior, doctors, and many other. What are the key points?

Rs have no clue at this point. IMHO everytime a leftist says the mean insurance companies are the problem…the R should say that barry hates doctors…and wants them to work on the cheap. Now, how many people want to for their doc to work on the cheap?

And so on. That require insight and unity. Half the Rs are happy that barry took the hit with obamacare so they wouldn’t have to do it. They have no solutions…never have. Worthless party

Defund ObamaCare!!!!

Not for those that voted for him……but for those tens of millions that will suffer if we get the British version of nationalized and rationed healthcare.

PappyD61 on September 16, 2013 at 6:40 PM

What is the whip count on Raising the Debt Limit vote?

Make the Dems vote first (schedule it @ 4:45 pm Friday; as they scurry to the suburbs). Repubs hang around, vote to pass by one vote. Determine who votes yea/nay to protect those running in 2014.

Same vote on the Budget CR.

The tanking on the economy between Congress voting and Nov. 2014 will be the Dem’s albatross- as they’ll be the majority.

Take over the Senate and super-majority the House.

Drop JugEars’ testes in jar of formaldehyde until January 2017. (Deliver to Chicago/Hawaii for Michelle’s going away present.)

this is an example of barrycare…asking about your sexual, drug habits. This is for use the the BigDateBase. That way ‘they’ can make sure that gays and straight, druggies and non-druggies are all getting the same level of care. The biostats guys will be having quite a field day slicing and dicing the peta-bytes of data…yum, yum.

the Rs are venal, self-serving and stupid…so don’t expect to hear a constant drumbeat against this…not their style.

Amash is right, of course. I think that once progressives realize they can’t stop the defund Obamacare effort and that they’ll have to vote then Democrats are suddenly going to embrace a common-sense one year delay of Obamacare and try to make it sound like it was their idea all along. If they shut down the government the progressive ruling class will be the biggest loser, and I think they know it. If not, if they think they’re going to win a shutdown fight I predict that they are wrong and it is going to backfire on them in a big way that they won’t be able to control. Either way it’s good for the American people: either a one year delay of Obamacare or else the demise of the progressive movement. Their pick(le).

Amash has a good idea for a compromise..But Obie will not bite on it..Let Obiecare fall under it’s own weight..:)..
