Navy Yard killer identified?

posted at 4:01 pm on September 16, 2013 by Allahpundit

I’m going to trust Pete Williams on this, partly because he was the most reliable reporter during the Boston bombings and partly because other outlets like Fox News are confident enough that they’re reporting the same name.

SWAT officers swarmed the building, the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command, and a shooter there was killed, sources told NBC News. Law enforcement officials identified the gunman to NBC News as Aaron Alexis, 34, originally of Fort Worth, Texas. They said he recently began working as a civilian contractor.

Chief Cathy Lanier said at mid-afternoon that as many as two other suspects could be at large, both seen with firearms and wearing military-style uniforms. Minutes later, police said on Twitter that one of the two had been identified and was not a suspect or person of interest…

Terrie Durham, who works at the Naval Sea Systems Command building, said she saw a gunman who appeared to be wearing dark fatigues.

Cops think Alexis used the ID of someone who used to work at the Navy Yard to gain access. How he got that ID is unclear. Maybe that’s where the Rollie Chance reports came from. We’ll see. Per NBC Washington, though, cops increasingly believe that Alexis was the only shooter because the paths taken through the building by the two other suspected gunmen didn’t leave carnage in their wake. One of the other possible shooters was ID’d as a white man in a tan outfit, but he’s now been eliminated as a suspect. I assume he was probably just an MP with his gun out whom someone saw from a distance and couldn’t tell if he was friend or foe.

Another interesting detail from NBC Washington, which is sadly relevant to the new national conversation on guns we’ll soon be having at the Democrats’ and the media’s urging:

Video also shows the gunman entered with a shotgun, News4′s Jackie Bensen reported. He shot the security guard and continued through the building, but according to what witnesses are telling investigators, by the time the shootings ended, the gunman was seen with a semiautomatic 9 mm pistol and an AR-15 assault rifle.

Authorities are investigating whether the gunman took the security guard’s service weapon – likely a 9 mm pistol – and hid in wait for the first responding D.C. police officers, who would be specially armed with AR-15s, then opened fire and shot one of the D.C. police officers in the legs. It’s unclear if the other officers assisting the wounded officer also were able to retrieve his AR-15.

The death toll right now is 11, plus Alexis. People have been e-mailing us a link to a Texas website with a mugshot of a guy named Aaron Alexis from 2010, but after knocking CBS and NBC for identifying the wrong man earlier, I’ll hold off on posting that for now. Look for an update here in case it’s confirmed. As of 4 p.m. ET, there still appears to be no firm clues about his motive.

Update: That was fast. Via Mediaite, NBC Washington says the Aaron Alexis arrested in 2010 — but ultimately not charged — for discharging a weapon is the same guy who went berserk at the Navy Yard.

Update: The FBI is seeking information about Alexis.

Also, laying the groundwork for the librul lies that will come later, the “news” media originally said he used an automatic rifle, then an AR-15 Assault rifle. Neither are true, but I think the libruls, in their infinite wisdom, think that the AR in AR-15 stands for “automatic Rifle.” not Armalite (although everybody makes them now.) However they are still one trigger pull, one bullet fired. Watch the libruls and politicians demogog their ignorance to the world, coming up on your national broadcast news.

How many times to they have to get things wrong before they figure out they should let the people who are qualified to conduct a thorough investigation do their jobs before they start planting racial and political motives?

Being “awarded” a medal does not mean you have done anything to earn it.

I ended up with medals simply because I was in a unit that had earned it, with no input from me.

I spent six weeks’ temp. duty and was told I could wear a medal that outfit earned–while I was there. The lifers that went with me ate it up. Seemed shallow to me.

They really don’t mean as much when EVERYONE gets them.
Unfortunately, the military has gone heavily in that direction over the last few decades – medal/award inflation.

I got a Joint Service Commendation medal for working in Cheyenne Mountain for 4 years back in the 80s. I wasn’t really sure what exactly I did for it, but I thought it was a pretty cool thing – until I found out pretty much everyone who worked there got one when they left.

Suspect in DC Navy Yard attack was arrested in Seattle in 2004 for anger-fueled ‘blackout’ shooting – @SeattlePD

29 mins ago from spdblotter.seattle.gov by editor
=======================================================

Suspect In Navy Yard Attack Previously Arrested In Seattle For “Anger-Fueled” Shooting
Written by Jonah Spangenthal-Lee on September 16, 2013

Aaron Alexis, the man identified by Washington D.C. police as a suspect in this morning’s tragic attack on a US Navy Yard, was previously arrested by Seattle police in 2004 for shooting out the tires of another man’s vehicle in what Alexis later described to detectives as an anger-fueled “blackout.”

Because Seattle police have received numerous inquiries about the incident, we are posting the details, detective logs, and the original report for the May 6, 2004 case.

At about 8 am that morning, two construction workers had parked their 1986 Honda Accord in the driveway of their worksite, next to a home where Alexis was staying in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

The victims reported seeing a man, later identified by police as Alexis, walk out of the home next to their worksite, pull a gun from his waistband and fire three shots into the two rear tires of their Honda before he walked slowly back to his home north of the construction site.

Officers responded to the scene but were unable to locate Alexis, and no one answered the door at his home.

When detectives interviewed workers and a manager at the construction site, they told police Alexis had “stared” at construction workers at the job site every day over the last month prior to the shooting. The owner of the construction business told police he believed Alexis was angry over the parking situation around the work site.

Detective notes from the incident indicate they made several attempts to contact Alexis by phone and at his work, but eventually found and arrested him outside of his home on June 3rd.

Police then obtained permission to search the home, found a gun and ammunition in Alexis’ room, and booked him into the King County Jail for malicious mischief.

Following his arrest, Alexis told detectives he perceived he had been “mocked” by construction workers the morning of the incident and said they had “disrespected him.” Alexis also claimed he had an anger-fueled “blackout,” and could not remember firing his gun at the victims’ vehicle until an hour after the incident.

Alexis also told police he was present during “the tragic events of September 11, 2001″ and described “how those events had disturbed him.”

Detectives later spoke with Alexis’ father, who lived in New York at the time, who told police Alexis had anger management problems associated with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and that Alexis had been an active participant in rescue attempts on September 11th, 2001.

Detectives referred the case to the Seattle Municipal Court for charges.

The Seattle Police Department has no further comment on this 2004 incident. PDFs of the original department records can be downloaded here.

Yup – there are a lot of medals that are basically just the military’s “participation ribbon”.

Seriously though, my prayers to the other 11 and their families. Going to be tough times for them.

I think Malfeasance is the word you are looking for here, David Blue. Malfeasance.

Key West Reader on September 16, 2013 at 6:21 PM

(Looks it up…)

Nonfeasance is to ignore and take no indicated action – neglect.
Misfeasance is to take inappropriate action or give intentionally incorrect advice.
Malfeasance is hostile, aggressive action taken to injure the client’s interests.

I don’t know – the mass media seems like a full service provider.
