Federal workers want everyone on Obamacare except… federal workers

posted at 5:31 pm on September 14, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

It’s really turning out to be an Obamacare kind of weekend, even in the midst of all the Syria news. First, Erika reported that labor unions were out of luck when it comes to getting an exemption from Obamacare, and Ed reminded us that the system is fraught with security problems. Well, the administration will need to keep an eye on how many horses are getting out of the pen, because virtually all Federal Employees would prefer not to be enrolled, thank you very much.

From Merrill Matthews at Forbes:

Who knew that when President Obama promised, “If you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. Period,” he was only referring to federal employees … and himself?

A new survey of 2,500 federal employees and retirees found that 92.3 percent believe federal workers should keep their current health insurance and not be forced into ObamaCare. Only 2.9 percent say they should become part of the new health insurance exchanges.

You always need to be cautious with surveys, particularly when you’re trying to hit such a specific demographic slice, but if you manage to ring up a number greater than 90 on one side of the equation you can be pretty sure that you’ve tapped into a significant majority. And Matthews has discovered a particularly biting bit of irony in these numbers which is probably already obvious to the majority of us. The lion’s share of federal workers are all organized in federal employee unions. Weren’t they some of the President’s most vocal and active supporters when this train wreck was being shoved through Congress in the first place?

What I’d like to know is how many of those federal employees so eager to avoid ObamaCare themselves supported forcing everyone else in it…

To put it simply: Federal employees and retires almost unanimously prefer to stay in their generous taxpayer-funded health insurance program, known as the Federal Employees Health Benefit Plan (FEHBP), rather than being dumped into liberalism’s two greatest monuments to government-run health insurance, ObamaCare and Medicare.

Speaks volumes, doesn’t it?

I can’t believe that there isn’t going to be some sort of eleventh hour, ride to the rescue maneuver to absolutely ensure that federal employees won’t face this awful fate. Staying on that fat, taxpayer funded Cadillac plan is the far better option, and Democrats don’t want that many union workers ticked off at them. But whatever the “solution” turns out to be, it won’t come as much comfort to all of the people on private plans who wind up getting forced onto the rolls. That would include workers, retirees and family members from UPS, IBM, Trader Joe’s and others.

But nobody really wants the GOP to keep trying to stop this bill, right? I mean, that would just be some silly people on the fringe.

The lion’s share of federal workers are all organized in federal employee unions.

No they’re not and the unions aren’t actually able to negotiate the things most unions do because federal employees can not strike..

Weren’t they some of the President’s most vocal and active supporters when this train wreck was being shoved through Congress in the first place

Perhaps the federal unions were but the individual employees are restrained from a lot of political activities due to the Hatch Act.

Why would it be a surprise that the average federal worker isn’t eager to have t go on Obamacare? Most of them had no more to do with Obamacare getting passed than the rest of us. Maybe it’s a shock but all federal employees are not liberals.

Federal workers want everyone on Obamacare except… federal workers

TWEEEEETTTTTTTT! Foul called! Misleading headlines.

Federal workers want everyone on Obamacare but them? Where do you get that out of this:

A new survey of 2,500 federal employees and retirees found that 92.3 percent believe federal workers should keep their current health insurance and not be forced into ObamaCare.

First off, the poll was not only federal employees but also federal retirees.

Secondly, they are rejecting Obamacare for themselves but where is the demand that everyone else be forced to enroll? I suspect if there was a poll of any group of workers you’d get much the same response.

Finally, federal workers don’t have any power to make that determination. To make it sound as if they have more of a choice about healthcare than others is outright fraud!

There is absolutely reasons to be critical of the federal workforce. It is bloated, redundant, and inefficient. But to accuse them of wanting “everyone” but themselves on Obamacare is an outright lie.

Shame on you Jazz Shaw!

Not reporting the whole story here canopfor. Union health plans already get federal subsidies. What the unions are demanding are those subsidies along with subsidies for those who don’t have employer-provided health benefits. Why? Because union members are going to get whacked by higher premiums just like the rest of us. The unions want to double dip at the subsidy trough because they know how ready many of their members are ready to bolt or revolt if they are forced into the same healthplans as the rest of us.

FLETCHER, N.C. (AP) — Tea party activists, once unquestioned as a benefit to the Republican Party for supplying it with votes and energy, are now criticizing GOP leaders at seemingly every turn.

They’re demanding that Congress use upcoming budget votes to deny money for putting in place President Barack Obama’s 2010 health care law, despite warnings the strategy could lead to a government shutdown.

They’re upset that Republicans didn’t block a Senate-passed immigration bill.

Most importantly though, retirees and the current workforce have different priorities. You can’t lump them in the same group.

Members of congress want everybody on Obamacare except themselves.

.Other special interest groups
.Charitable organizations

bw222 on September 14, 2013 at 6:46 PM

We need to stop and smell soem facts here. First of all, most Federal Employees are not in a union. That is a big urban legend that keeps getting repeated. If you take away Postal employees who are not in the employ of the Federal Government you come up with way less than 50% of Fed Employees being in a union. The Post Office does not belong to the Federal Government and follows it’s own rules.

Second, the ones who are in a Union are only able to negotiate working conditions. They are not allowed to negotiate benefits, pay, leave, annual or sick leave, etc. They are only allowed to negotiate working conditions. Stuff like why can’t I smoke within 50 feet of my building, Parking is way too far away from my building and I can’t get to work on time because it takes me 10 minutes to find a parking space, etc.

We heard this very same thing when the Federal Government changed from CSRS to FERS for the retirement benefits. Congress can change anything they want to whenever they want to.

I think everyone needs to step back and understand why the Federal Retiree’s being included in this poll is not the correct way to go. In 1984 Congress changed the Federal Retirement system from Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) to Federal Retirement System (FERS). Anyone hired after 1 January 1984 was automatically covered under the FERS plan. They have to go on Medicare at age 65 when they are retired. People hired before 1 Jan 1984 are on CSRS and do not have to go on Medicare when they retire(d), CSRS people get to keep their Federal Health Insurance benefits through retirement if they want to, or they can go on Medicare. Obamacare will force them to go on Medicare and they will lose the Federal Health Insurance kicker and lose their gold plated plans.

So including them into this survey is wrong, because who in their right mind would want to give up free money?

Johnnyreb on September 14, 2013 at 7:03 PM

CSRS people get to keep their Federal Health Insurance benefits through retirement if they want to, or they can go on Medicare. Obamacare will force them to go on Medicare and they will lose the Federal Health Insurance kicker and lose their gold plated plans.

Whether those plans are gold plated is questionable but once retirees become eligible for Medicare most of the employee funded plans become secondary and the retirees still pay sizable premiums.

Finally, if federal workers were so supportive of Obamacare, why are they so unsupportive now?

Happy Nomad on September 14, 2013 at 6:49 PM

Possibly because they thought at the time they would be excluded from 0bamacare?

EEprom on September 14, 2013 at 8:31 PM

Maybe it’s a shock but all federal employees are not liberals.

katiejane on September 14, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Here here. I am a union member and I am not a liberal. I do think unions do have a use, those are good unions. Sadly, most have lost the way.

Want a good example of a great union and how they should be? Check out Millwrights…. they do top notch work. They also dont go by the normal stuff you hear. They boot you out if you can not do your job, and on the other hand they fine their own workers for doing someone elses job, for the feel that if that worker needs help they should not be there part of the union :). If I had to do it over again I would and stick with those guys.

Federal workers want everyone on Obamacare except… federal workers

Even if they are put on Obamacare, couldn’t they still not have to pay anything as part of their benefits packages?

I know most of us have an “I’m the exception!” story, but you are using a rather broad brush. I can’t say what current federal employees have–and I think government unions are obscene–but my father was a federal investigator for more than 30 years. He was gone every weekday of my childhood, won awards for thwarting some pretty dangerous plots (before Islamic terrorism was on the map), and was completely devoted to America. He really did earn his retirement. To reduce every federal worker to “unnecessary” weakens your argument.

DrMagnolias on September 14, 2013 at 10:20 PM

Why would it be a surprise that the average federal worker isn’t eager to have t go on Obamacare? Most of them had no more to do with Obamacare getting passed than the rest of us. Maybe it’s a shock but all federal employees are not liberals.

katiejane on September 14, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Doing you a favor by bolding the words you used that are key to your claim.

Let me help you with logic. 92.3% is drastically greater than the average. Most implies more than 50% and your claim would infer that 50+% of federal employees didn’t vote for Obama. That would be a lie. Lastly, all implies 100%. Obviously 100% of federal employees aren’t liberals, but the majority are as proven by their voting record.

Happy Nomad on September 14, 2013 at 6:02 PM

Dear as5-sniffing liberal dope, he was talking to the HA readers who can think clearly. We understand that Federal workers vote for Democrats, who passed this POS without a single Republican. They re-elected Our Idiot President. They vote for Obamacare, idiot.

Jaibones on September 14, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Dr. ZhivBlago wrote: Even if they are put on Obamacare, couldn’t they still not have to pay anything as part of their benefits packages?

Federal workers do pay a percentage of their health insurance premiums. The amount depends on the plan he/she chooses.

Paul Ryan has many times referred to the FEHB as the model that could be used in lieu of Obamacare. But the Progressives want to have total control and the FEHB would not meet that criteria.

Remember when you demagogue Federal workers are you including the doctors, nurses, psychologists, physical and occupational therapists, etc, who provide medical are for our veterans?

butterflylady on September 15, 2013 at 12:26 AM

I’m a federal worker, and I didn’t even want Obama, much less his Care.

guinneach on September 15, 2013 at 1:26 AM

I am a Federal Worker in the DOD healthcare area and I assure you there were plenty of us who opposed Obamacare and did not support its namesake. One of my brothers is a Federal retiree and he did not support them either. People in the healthcare industry were NOT overwhelmingly for forcing people into Obamacare either. There are lots of Republicans and fiscal conservatives in government who would like to see elimination of non-pruductive activities and non-productive employees. Don’t throw all Federal employees out with the Socialist bathwater.

KW64 on September 15, 2013 at 1:34 AM

Federal employees view themselves as a protected class. They believe they should not be subjected to being fired for incompetence, laid off or have salaries frozen when their employer is loosing megabucks or healthcare programs that are forced on mere mortals in the private sector.

bw222 on September 14, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Really? How many Federal employees do you know? No, Federal employees do want incompetents fired. Who do you think they cause the most trouble for? Salaries have been frozen for three years now and no change is expected next year either. Have you seen any of us go on strike? I think it has been accepted rather quietly. While I acknowledge that the government employee pay kept rising when the private sector was not during the first decade of this millenium, private sector salaries the last three years are basically keeping up with inflation while Federal salaries are not.

Again, big tents win enough elections to provide the power to make change. Little tents live in the political wilderness. It is foolish to alienate potential allies by condemning entire classes of people.

Because they trusted their elected officials like Nancy Pelosi, who when she said Congress would have to pass ObamaCare to find out what’s in it, was at the same time telling their constituents that what was in it was rainbows, unicorns, fairy princesses and discount prescription Skittles for everyone.

The majority of federal employees took the word of Democrats (as did the majority of private sector union workers) that ObamaCare was going to solve all the nation’s health care access problems, pain-free. But now that the major aspects of the program are looming and will scuttle the health plans most of them were already satisfied with, they’re demanding changes that spares them they pain they were warned would happen by ObamaCare’s opponents four years ago.

(And you’ll note in the case of both government employees and the public- and private-sector unions, as mad as they are about possibly losing their plans, they’re not demanding that ObamaCare be completely scuttled. They’re demanding that they specifically either have their Cadillac health care plans exempted under ObamaCare, or that the Democrats figure out how to do single payer health care where the government provides federal employees and union members with those Cadillac plans. Everyone else can pound health care sand as far as they’re concerned.)

jon1979 on September 15, 2013 at 2:52 AM

I’ll admit to being a Federal “double-dipper”, Retired Army and Civil Service. Those in my association never wanted any of this ObamaCare Crap in the first place and fought vigorously against it.
Don’t even think for a minute that all Federal employees supported the law or its fraudulent method of passage.

Lazarus Long on September 15, 2013 at 7:50 AM

Second, the ones who are in a Union are only able to negotiate working conditions. They are not allowed to negotiate benefits, pay, leave, annual or sick leave, etc. They are only allowed to negotiate working conditions. Stuff like why can’t I smoke within 50 feet of my building, Parking is way too far away from my building and I can’t get to work on time because it takes me 10 minutes to find a parking space, etc.

We heard this very same thing when the Federal Government changed from CSRS to FERS for the retirement benefits. Congress can change anything they want to whenever they want to.

Johnnyreb on September 14, 2013 at 6:48 PM

Not quite correct. NATCA, Air Traffic Controller’s Union has been negotiating wages since the 1990′s. The GS pay scale did not go high enough for them so the ATC pay scale was created. The average ATC salary is $127,000 BEFORE benefits.

Interesting link.

The government needs to be cut in half. Literally. There is no excuse for our government to be sucking up so much of our GDP. I don’t give a rat’s petoot about the plight of laid off government workers. They are part of the problem. If the private sector retained the money that the feds pi$$ against the wall, our economy would be stronger than it has been since the raw deal. And screeching about the fact that not all government employees are for 0care is meaningless. Enough were to enable its infliction upon the rest of us, just as a minority party in Germany was able to steer its disastrous course in the mid 30′s to 40′s. And don’t dare get in a snit about the comparison; the federal leviathan parasite is most definitely fascist in nature these days. 0care is the definition of fascism. Every congress member who voted for it should be lined up against a wall and shot for treason and crimes against our Constitution for its passage. And no nonsense about the SCOTUS either. No one in their right mind who is familiar with our founding documents can make an argument that our founders would be happy to see the government ordering its employees to engage in commerce against their will, just to list one of the “law’s” defects.

SteveThomas on September 15, 2013 at 9:36 AM

The 2012 election survey by the same site that Jazz is citing had Romney as the preferred winner, 56% to 40%, and a 2010 survey at that site had 69% against the health care reform bill, so don’t know where this “feds favor Democrats/Obamacare” meme is coming from. The unions, sure, but only 31% of federal workers belong to unions, so that’s not really saying much.

Can you provide a link to any supporting surveys that support your comment that over 50% of federal employees voted for Obama? The article at the topic link did not address the voting records so where did you find that info?

What does 92.3% of a group of less than 3000 not wanting to be dumped into a crappy insurance system say about who they voted for? I imagine if you surveyed a lot of groups they might generally reject being dumped into Obamacare- why would federal employees be any different?
