Hillary to speak on Syria today

posted at 9:21 am on September 9, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Until now, Hillary Clinton has remained mighty quiet on Syria.  As Secretary of State, she described Bashar al-Assad as a “reformer,” but now her successor has begun comparing Assad to Adolf Hitler.  That silence will apparently end today, if Politico’s sources within Hillary’s camp are accurate:

Hillary Clinton will make her first public remarks about Syria on Monday when she makes a visit to the White House for an unrelated event, a Clinton aide told POLITICO.

The comments, the first since an unidentified aide said last week that the former Secretary of State supports President Obama in going before Congress to get support for a limited strike against Syria, will come after she meets privately with Obama at the White House, the aide said.

She will then appear at an event related to wildlife preservation at the White House, an event where her daughter, Chelsea, is part of the program. Clinton is expected to address Syria at the beginning of the event, in fairly brief remarks, the aide said.

She’s expected to make longer remarks generally, but to stick with her Monday comments on Syria, the following evening, when she gives a speech at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, where former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will be honoring her.

Her speech, however, is not expected to be a dissertation on Syria. Nor will it be so about the NSA, which had been expected to be the original topic. The speech is likely to be a mixture of themes.

This looks like such a loser that it’s amazing to see Hillary making any statement at all — on Syria or the NSA. If she’s speaking from the White House, that means Hillary will come down all in on the side of American intervention, which is deeply unpopular across all political aggregations.  That will raise a lot of questions about Hillary’s own stewardship of American diplomacy during the “Assad the Reformer” period in which the US refused to demand Assad’s resignation for months while he conducted military attacks on demonstrators — after demanding Hosni Mubarak’s after just eight days of mostly peaceful protests in Tahrir Square.

The calculus must be that by openly declaring support for Obama’s position, she will be demonstrating leadership and pushing Capitol Hill to back intervention.  However, leadership on starting another war hardly helps the Democratic brand.  Having the Clintons behind the plan may make it even more difficult to get Republicans on board, especially in the House, where Obama has his biggest obstacle.  For Hillary, it saddles her with all of the baggage of being attached to the biggest cowboy unilateralist evah with no upside for winning the strategy, but all of the downside when it turns out like Libya, or worse.

Speaking of Libya, this public stand comes on the anniversary of Benghazi, a topic that Hillary has successfully avoided since leaving Foggy Bottom.  How smart for Hillary to jump in now — and how smart is it for the White House to invite those comparisons, which even ABC isn’t hesitating to make, implicitly at least?

Hillary to speak on Syria today

Why? What difference at this point does it make?

If the pig speaks about anything maybe a little truthtelling about Benghazi would be in order.

About the only thing this woman is going to say is pretty much the same garbage we have heard from everyone else pushing to bomb Syria into popcorn! And it is not going to deter anyone from changing their mind that this is the biggest mistake this country could make. We cannot afford to get into another armed conflict, and that is meant literally. And there is nothing going on in Syria that poses a threat to the United States!

So blabber away, Hill! No one is going to be listening anyway!

Happy Nomad on September 9, 2013 at 9:41 AM

This is revisionist history in action folks. The democrats are loathe to have you remember the heroism of 9/11, George Bush’s stellar and steady leadership, unwavering in the face of tyrants. The democrats are loath to have you remember their democrat failures of their own 9/11 in Benghazi. What better way to keep the memory hole open and functioning than to have a horrific amount of noise called Syria that they’re using to cloud your memory of both 9/11/01 and 9/11/12.

The democrats are trying vaingloriously to establish some generational credibility on foreign policy. They’re just using bashir assad as a scapegoat to do so. They’re trying to do it on the cheap with an “exceedingly small, limited” strike. It’s win-win for them. They will look like they can execute a cheap, semi-effective military strike, without the years long baggage of an extended conflict. They love to have sex without consequences, and they’re trying to do the same thing with war.

We will be able to hold [Syrian President] Bashar al-Assad accountable without engaging troops on the ground or any other prolonged kind of effort, in a very limited, very targeted, very short-term effort that degrades his capacity to deliver chemical weapons without assuming responsibility for Syria’s civil war. Jeb Bush To Give Hillary Clinton “Liberty Medal” for Furthering “Ideals of Freedom”

“Former Secretary Clinton has dedicated her life to serving and engaging people across the world in democracy,” Bush, the NCC’s chairman, said in a statement announcing the award. “These efforts as a citizen, an activist, and a leader have earned Secretary Clinton this year’s Liberty Medal.”

The thirty people who survived the attack have been relocated, had their names changed, are forbidden to talk about it, and get monthly polygraphs.

That’s what freedom’s all about, baby. And all that started while she was still Sec of State.

Only two problems with this. First Susan Rice is a known liar. She has no credibility- especially when it comes to stuff like this.

Secondly, there is no conclusive proof that Assad’s regime was responsible for the sarin attack. Assad says he didn’t do it. The Russians say he didn’t do it. The UN has yet to say anything.

Will she dwell nostalgically on her successes in Egypt, Libya, Lebanon, Iran, Russia and now Syria? Her support for Obamacare?

I’m a bit confused on what Democrats believe Hillary is qualified to do. The last thing this country needs is another media creation whose accomplishments, or the lack thereof, read more like arguments against their wisdom and candidacy, than for it. The last 7 years of wreckage should be testimony enough for the average person to run away from another incapable (and in this case proven) phony.

Hillary has no honor, and deserves no honor. After her disgraceful performance as Secretary of State, she certainly should not be getting any awards.

Which goes right back to your question, “Why is Jeb Bush honoring her?” Such a lack of comprehension of her character does not reflect well on him. It’s like all that matters is that she is part of the elite, and therefore to be admired.

She will then appear at an event related to wildlife preservation at the White House, an event where her daughter, Chelsea, is part of the program.

Chelsea IS the wildlife being preserved?

And who the F listens to what Hillary has to say anymore? She lost her credibility way before the president did.

scalleywag on September 9, 2013 at 10:30 AM

She never had credibility, the woman has not accomplished anything independent of her husband…It was a fiction invented by the media and her party.

Sound familiar?

Suppose they gave a war, and nobody came? Why then, the war would come to you!

Looks like hillary is preparing to launch a limited campaign strike. And who knows, even with her obvious flaws and contradictions, maybe she can make a successful comeback like martha stewart did.

‘We’re not going to war. That is exactly what we are talking about doing; an unbelievably small, limited kind of effort.’

– John Kerry told reporters Monday after meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague in London

‘Unbelievably small’?

Like the Obama administration’s competence.

What difference, at this point, will an ‘unbelievably small’ airstrike make?

Resist We Much on September 9, 2013 at 9:44 AM

Too small to have an effect, but enough fuss for everyone to be aware we’re doing it.

This is the military equivalent of a Congressional resolution: it has no actual effect except making a statement.

This is just the Obama administration quite literally using bombing to “send a message.”

Killary: “Let’s save some animals that are to stupid to make it on their own, but not our ambassadors under completely predictable attack by jihadists!”

Save the __________ (insert animal-of-the-month), but to hell with all of us out here in Benghazi, right Hillary?

Yes, she’s bought, but apparently thinks helping Zero won’t hurt her, OR she’s not running.

dogsoldier on September 9, 2013 at 10:43 AM

hey’re trying to do it on the cheap with an “exceedingly small, limited” strike.
ted c on September 9, 2013 at 9:41 AM

“Exceedingly small, limited….” then I suspect Kerry and Obama will launch a spam stike on Assad’s e-mail account as punishment for his evil….

More seriously though, with these nicompoops as co-commanders-in-chief, even a small strike is enough for the Iranians, Russians,China, anyone to use it as an excuse to trigger a large disaster (i.e. attack Israel or have the islamists double down on Christianicide, WWIII, whatever) Faux messiah’s make tolerable enemy combatants.

No matter how you wish to dice and slice this issue these salient point will remain.
Hillary is a private citizen that will be giving a speech on National issues from the White House.
The “President will be standing in the background behind the curtain to see which way the polls fall so that he can give a better speech on Tuesday.

Hilary is not nor has she ever been in a position to state National policy. She is acting only in her capacity as resident “HOUSE BITCH”.

Why would she do this? Certainly not to get points to run for President. She and Billy are shrewed campaigners. The fight to the presidency in 2016 is nearly impossible for them. Her coming up on the wrong side of these current issues is a certain death noel.

Then what? An Ambassadorship! Declare a Coup, replace Kerry as Sectary of State.
Kerry to ambassador to France.

Final observation. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the white house is trying to get out of this mess. The government policies are so dis jointed that the in-the-tank media can’t even figure out what side to be on. This make for a very, very dangerous situation. Watch for an Obama resignations for “Health” reasons by the end of the year. Bidden will be declared unfit. Hillary as president of the United States with out an election.
