Game over: Pew poll shows opposition to Syria strike up 15 points in just a week

posted at 5:21 pm on September 9, 2013 by Allahpundit

It’s one thing to ask Congress to take a tough vote when the polls are bad, it’s another to ask them to take a tough vote when the polls are getting worse despite a big White House PR push.

Show of hands: Who wants to gamble their House or Senate seat on the chance that an attack on Syria won’t go terribly wrong and drive public support down even further?

Over just the past week, the share of Americans who oppose U.S. airstrikes in Syria has surged 15 points, from 48% to 63%, as many who were undecided about the issue have turned against military action. By contrast, the share of Americans who support airstrikes remains virtually unchanged: Just 28% favor U.S. military airstrikes against Syria in response to reports that its government used chemical weapons.

The new survey by the Pew Research Center and USA TODAY, conducted Sept. 4-8, 2013 among 1,506 adults nationwide, finds that this growing opposition to Syrian airstrikes is intense: 45% say they oppose airstrikes very strongly. That is roughly three-times the percentage (16%) that strongly favors airstrikes.

Opposition is up across partisan lines, marginally in the case of Democrats (from 48 percent a week ago to a majority of 53 percent now) and dramatically among Republicans and independents (from 40 to 70 percent and 50 to 66 percent, respectively). Obama’s job approval on foreign policy now stands at … 33/57. And that’s not all:

fa

Republican and Democratic shifts along partisan lines are predictable, but check out the indies. There’s more support now for letting Congress decide than there was for the much more ambitious Iraq invasion of 2002. Is that a function of post-9/11 support for an aggressive commander-in-chief wearing off after a decade of war or is it a comment on O bleeding away the remnants of his credibility on foreign policy generally and Syria specifically, where his approval rating has fallen to 29/56?

WaPo’s whip count in the House, by the way, stands at 238 likely no’s, many of which are bound to firm up now that Pew shows public support for an attack deteriorating the more the public pays attention to it. National Journal theorized this morning, before Kerry’s latest episodes of drooling on himself, that being back in the Beltway bubble might insulate congressional fencesitters from constituent opposition, but anecdotally all signs point to no: A House GOP leadership source tells NRO that Obama can expect no more than 30-40 yes votes from Republicans, and a Senate source claims that 60 votes to defeat an anti-war filibuster is now in doubt. In fact, judging from the lack of White House outreach to Republican hawks in the House, they’ve given up on the GOP; if this is going to happen, Pelosi’s going to have to work a miracle and deliver almost the entire Democratic caucus in favor. Via the Corner, watch this clip of Democrat Jim McGovern from yesterday and tell me how likely that sounds.

Update: Confirmation via ABC/WaPo, whose new poll also shows opposition to attacking Syria rising over the past week. Once again it’s Republicans who are driving the surge against intervening, although opposition is up slightly among Democrats and independents too.

More to the point, it is clear that the American public is not buying what virtually everybody but the White House pool boy was out selling today. Why are we still talking about this?

The simple fact is that if there were a compelling case, the American people would be supportive. But talk of unbelievably small warfare with the planning assumption that the enemy will just take their punishment without response……. This is nuts!

I’m actually surprised the numbers aren’t higher against.

Obama and the Democrats spent almost a decade demonizing the war in Iraq. And yet now Obama is arguing that we urgently need to attack Syria for one of the same reasons we went to war in Iraq.

And unlike Hussein, it isn’t entirely clear Assad was behind the chemical attack that is Obama’s casus belli.

If I were a Republican in congress I might just try to float a bill that if Obama attacks Syria he would have to return his nobel peace prize. :)

exodus2011 on September 9, 2013 at 5:56 PM

“This is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting and never use the word “victory” except when he’s talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed … when the roar of the crowd fades away … when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot — what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger … take more of your money … give you more orders from Washington … and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world.”

“My fellow citizens, the American presidency is not supposed to be a journey of “personal discovery.” This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.”

Goin’ good

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration’s efforts to sway Congress to support military airstrikes against Syria suffered further setbacks Monday, raising serious doubts that the president will be able to muster the necessary support in either the House or Senate.

Three additional senators, Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., Roy Blunt, R-Mo., and Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., announced their opposition Monday, eliminating three potentially critical votes for the administration.

I cannot for the life of me see how having Putin intervene that this can be a game changer and make the zero look one bit better.

Theme- My tough talk got Syria to back down. They blinked first.

Happy Nomad on September 9, 2013 at 6:41 PM

Zer0 has made Putin look like a reasonable right-winger. Whodda thunk it!

I do believe that Obama will wiggle out of this.

This is who Obama wants to help??

For the REB I think it is more about Assad than the other side. There is no enemy of the Muslim Brotherhood more powerful than Assad, except perhaps the new president of Egypt.

The MoBro has always been behind revolutionary movements in Syria; it was the MoBro that led the revolt in Hama that Hafez put down so brutally. The Assad family has been dedicated for decades to the destruction of the MoBro.

The REB on the other hand has promoted the MoBro whenever he can including installing them into the Egyptian government. That failed, but he can recover their influence by getting rid of Assad and his ruling party.

That was always a given.

The question now is what the hell is he going to be saying tomorrow night. Does he jump on the “Russian proposal.” Or does he continue to sell the unbelievably small strike with cruise missiles.

Happy Nomad on September 9, 2013 at 6:46 PM

So Obozo drums up this whole thing to try and look tough and winds up looking even more like a wuss. More of this please.

Obummer will claim tomorrow night that weeks of personal negotiations with Putin led to this breakthrough. Obummer loves to lie.

esr1951 on September 9, 2013 at 6:51 PM

Yeah they were openly laughing at that claim on Special Report.

Class clown pretending that this was part of the plan all along.

Happy Nomad on September 9, 2013 at 7:07 PM

I guess one mark in the plus column for the creep is that this Russian proposal will drag on forever and will put all scandals firmly on the back burner. Maybe for the rest of his miserable term.

tru2tx on September 9, 2013 at 7:12 PM

Well the two in the screencap could screw up a one car funeral procession – I think America is seeing that loud and clear.

gophergirl on September 9, 2013 at 7:20 PM

So now what does the boy king have to drone on about tomorrow? I heard it was supposed to be a 45- minute snorefest but now what? If he does try to lie about it I’m sure Putin will happily set him straight in a very public way. He ought to just cancel and go play golf. It will do less damage than anything else he could say in a speech on a moot issue.
