Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on September 8, 2013 by Allahpundit

Now that Obama and Kerry have failed epically to sell a Syria attack to Congress (let alone to the public), it’s White House chief of staff Denis McDonough’s turn. He’ll pull a rare “full Ginsburg” this morning to try to convince skeptics that bombing Assad will be the most successful U.S. intervention since, er, Libya.

The Sunday shows have a nice mix of hawks and doves today, with Rand Paul and Justin Amash representing the latter on “Fox News Sunday” and “Face the Nation,” respectively. The one to watch, though, is “This Week” on ABC. Ted Cruz will speak for anti-interventionists; on the other side is GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who rhetorically smacked Cruz more than once this week for describing potential U.S. military assets in Syria as “Al Qaeda’s air force.” Hopefully they’ll be on together to square that away. The full line-up is at Politico.

A true statesman would be trying to stop the killing instead of seeking to bomb people.

Reagan hated Communism, but he actively went forward to put an end to enmity between the West and the Soviet Union.

THAT is a statesman.

Liam on September 8, 2013 at 8:45 AM

Is there anything left to bomb in Syria?

Obama was the last person on earth I’d ever think would be taking us to war, but after this week I don’t know if there’s anything else he can do at this point. He’s damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. One thing I DO know for sure is that he’ll never, ever get the scorn and hatred for doing so that’s been leveled at President Bush for the past decade over the war in Iraq.

I think the media are missing the OTHER humanitarian horror over there besides the use of chemical weapons, and instead of showing these videos of that horror, they need to start showing the other horror, and that is that the madman in power has forced MILLIONS of innocent citizens out of their homes and into refugee camps. I think of that and when I saw the Instagram pics of Assad and his lovely wife smiling with their families I almost lost my lunch.

I once read the text of a letter from Reagan, soon after he became President, to Soviet Premier Breznyev(sp?). In it, Reagan assured him the United States never had or has any intent, in all the years of the Cold War, to initiate a first-strike against the Soviet Union.

THAT is a statesman, a man seeking true peace.

Liam on September 8, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Liam on September 8, 2013 at 8:57 AM

It’s just like Iraq, we have alllll this “intelligence” that says Assad has gassed his own people, including videos, and we’ve been assured by Kerry that MOST of the rebels are the good guys, and we have a president whose motive for going to war is not clear or credible and guess what? In all likelihood we’ll end up going over there whether Congress or the American people want us to or not. That’s what ticks me off the most, over and over and over again the people say they don’t want something and no one listens, they just do what they want to.

scalleywag on September 8, 2013 at 8:57 AM

I’ve read much about how no one can be sure that these chemical attacks weren’t perpetrated by the rebels rather than Assad. But that the U.S. could be complicit in helping the rebels do this is beyond comprehension. Then again, this is Obama. If true, this is Fast & Furious on steroids.

“The army pulled back to the outskirts of the village and both (rebel groups) are in total control of Maaloula now,” he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

He said pro-government fighters remain inside the village, in hiding.

Initially, troops loyal to President Bashar Assad moved into Maaloula early Saturday, he said, “but they left when rebels started pouring into the village.” Now, Abdurrahman said, the army is surrounding the village and controlling its entrances and exits.

A Maaloula resident said the rebels, many of them sporting beards and shouting Allahu Akbar, or God is great, attacked Christian homes and churches shortly after moving into the village overnight.

“They shot and killed people. I heard gunshots and then I saw three bodies lying in the middle of a street in the old quarters of the village,” said the resident, reached by telephone from neighboring Jordan. “So many people fled the village for safety.”

Now, Maaloula “is a ghost town. Where is President Obama to see what befallen on us?” asked the man, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal by the rebels…”

Wethal on September 8, 2013 at 9:04 AM

McCain is a manipulative tool.

Allahu Akbar was shouted by Mohammed before he slaughtered the Qurayza Jews.

In AD 627, Muhammad committed an atrocity against the last remaining major tribe of Jews in Medina: the Qurayza.

He beheaded the men and the pubescent boys and enslaved the women and children.

The immediate background of this mass extermination and enslavement is the Battle of the Trench (or Ditch), in February-March-April (the exact calculations vary), AD 627. This battle—though it ended up being a siege—pitted a coalition of Quraysh (a large tribe in and around Mecca) against Muslims and some Medinan non-Muslims. The Quraysh also had allies: the Ghatafan (northern Arab tribes to the east of Medina and Mecca) and an assortment of smaller tribes. As for the Muslims, prominent Islamologist W. M. Watt says that on the eve of battle, Muhammad’s army consisted of “practically all the inhabitants of Medina with the exception of the Jewish tribe of Qurayzah, who seem to have tried to remain neutral. There were some Medinans in league with the Meccans, but they were presumably . . . exiled from Medina for the time being” (Muhammad at Medina, p. 36)…”

Lest we forget:

“The most beautiful sound in the world.” The Mohammedan call to prayer.

Not the first cry of a newborn child.

Not the lifting sounds of the Star-Spangled Banner as a young athlete is awarded Olympic gold for surpassing even his or her own high expectations of achievement and determination.

Not the happy songs of young children…

But, the Mohammedan call to prayer?

It is stirring, it is in its own way fascinating, and at the same time exotic and powerful…

But most beautiful?

I’d place it right up there with camel belching.

And on LOGOTV (whatever that is) there’s a show about The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders tryouts. Lots of scenery, really good scenery.

On Saturday Kathryn Jean Lopez posted an interview with the author of Crucified Again, Raymond Ibrahim. Below are some pertinent outtakes:

KJL: How can the U.S. help? Specifically the Christians and minorities under fire?

IBRAHIM: It is sad to say, but the days when Mideast Christians called for U.S. help are gone. Today, all that Copts, Christian Syrians, and others want from the U.S. is for it to not get involved — since apparently every time it does get involved it’s to help those who persecute Christians, Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, and now al-Qaeda in Syria. Watching Mideast media, it’s clear that millions of Egyptians and Syrians — both Christians and moderate Muslims and others — want nothing more from the U.S. than for it to stop supporting terrorists, under the guise of “freedom” and “democracy.”

KJL: Has the world forgotten Egypt as we debate Syria? Has there been any respite for Copts?

IBRAHIM: There’s been more of a respite for Copts in the last few weeks, specifically after the military cleared out the Brotherhood terrorist camps, when MB supporters went on a church-attacking-spree, but sporadic attacks are still very common, especially in the context of kidnapping Copts for ransom and then killing them.

KJL: What’s your advice for members of Congress who have to vote on Syria intervention this week?

IBRAHIM: If the U.S. has a legitimate interest to attack Assad, that’s one thing. But currently, all I’m hearing is talk of chemical weapons, “atrocities,” and “human rights.” If they are truly the reason the U.S. wants to invade Syria, than that’s absurd, since the fact is, from one end of the world to the other, outrageous human-rights abuses — many much worse than the use of chemical weapons — are going on. The real question is not whether Assad used chemical weapons or not, but rather why his doing so would warrant U.S. military intervention — when so many worse human-rights abuses are happening all around the world, each one of which is as well documented as the chemical accusation against Assad is still open to debate. In short, if there is a legitimate case for invading Syria, U.S. leaders, beginning with Obama, need to start making it, and drop the hypocritical rhetoric about “human rights” concerns — which has become nothing short of insulting to one’s intelligence.

I don’t know who Roger Staubach is. I hate football and have never watched a game. I just like watching pretty girls in skimpy outfits sashay around. I love fried chicken. One of my friends is a plank owner on the USS Texas. At the commissioning ceremony the Cowboys cheerleaders performed for them and then served refreshments on the mess decks.

You all think the best way to help Christians in Syria is to do nothing? This reminds me of Yugoslavia in 1993-5. We did nothing then too and 100,000 people died. Remember ethnic cleansing? The exact same is happening here. Sunnis and Shiites will be in separate enclaves eventually…they already are. God knows where the Christians will be….probably with Assad. In a year, Syria will be divided, then NATO will step in, end the war and partition Syria…..after 100,000 deaths and millions in refugee camps. Yugoslavia all over again.
